Love this one. She also did a beautiful ballad, which she wrote, with Don Henley called Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough. She’s got a great voice and is still singing. She’s actually Patty Smyth with a long “I” sound as opposed to Patti Smith with the traditional pronunciation. A little factoid - she’s been married to John McEnroe for a couple of decades. They live in my neighborhood in NYC.
They reacted to Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough already but I think it's blocked or something because it's not there right now.
I was gonna mention that song too!
Great song and think she wrote it with Glen Burtnick who played with Styx and has been playing music forever. I saw Glen in the traveling company of "Beatlemania" back in 1979. He played Paul. Marshall Crenshaw played John.
A gorgeous song, but other reaction channels have said Don Henley songs get you copyright strikes.
@@MichaelHHHH It's Don Henley who ALWAYS blocks his songs.
"Love's Got a Line on You" is another Scandal gem.
She was smokin' too in the video
Yep, the video has some young guy named Jon Bon Jovi in it. Wonder if that guy ever amounted to anything?
Yaasss!!! Great request!! I love Patty Smyth
So many New Wave bands had female lead singers, back then.
@@BerlinFan82 I went and watched the video, and I was going to tell you that your memory is mistaken because JBJ is not in the video, but then found a "2nd alternative" video and sure enough he is in that one on rhythm guitar.
Also the late Dee Murray, the bassist for Elton Jhon's band in their 70's heyday, is in it on bass. he is the one with the Rod Stewart haircut. (glad that went out of style. lol)
A LOT of us fell in love with Patty from this song! This is SOOOO 80s!
Yup, 1982. I remember it well. Saw this on MTV back then and the first thing I asked was "Who's the babe?" Found out later who she was and I've liked her ever since.
She was so beautiful ❤️
Omg. MTV. Orange crush. And Totinos pizza. This stuff is all so bad. It’s just awesome and I love it.
Easily one of the best uptempo break up songs ever! Always fun to on my keyboards. Then, "The Warrior" came and Patty Smythe jumped to the big leagues with Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Ann and Nancy Wilson as a massive female Rock goddess!!
You nailed it. I used to come running into the room when I heard this song start up. She is absolutely gorgeous. It's probably why I prefer this song over "Warrior" because they cover her pretty face up in that video.
The Motels "Only The Lonely", Berlin "Metro" or " Take My Breath Away", Quarterflash "Harden My Heart"
The Motels! Berlin!
Hell yeah, Harden my Heart!
Quarterflash "Find Another Fool" all day
What a great time we had in the 80s. We danced a lot. Often in groups on the dance floor. Mouthing and gesturing the words. A song like this was how the whole gang helped someone get over a relationship gone wrong. And I’m still friends with many of those people.❤
the warrior
@@alexanderhay7358 Another great one: "Win Some, Lose Some"". Excellent!!!
Yes! So much fun! It's just not the same now. Mind you, I was 27 when this song came out, so dancing is not so easy anymore now that I'm 68 😢
Crazy thing is Eddie Van Hallen and her were friends and he actually asked her to take Dave's place in the band when Dave left. She was very pregnant at the time and Scandal was doing well so she turned him down. They kept it a secret for a long time as to not make Sammy feel he was their 2nd choice.
You two are my favorite reaction channel. I love being a member of the Rob Squad Fam! Have a wonderful weekend.
OMigosh I love this one. Patty is incredible. This song is an early one and encapsulates the 80s vibe so well.
My favorite from them. You should also check out "Win Some Lose Some." Eddie Van Halen once asked Patty to sing for Van Halen after David Lee Roth left the band.
I'm amazed at how well John McEnroe plays the guitar for his wife. Not in this video, but others.
This song got me through the breakup of my first really serious breakup. It still gets me dancing and makes me feel like a bad ass all these years later
Without this song, there would not have been "I am the Warrior" song. Brings back memories of my college days. They were so much fun!
One of the most perfect 80's songs. Here's the thing about us gen Xer's, this song was the encapsulation of our dating lives, it comes and goes. Patty was spunky and this song was fun to boot.
🙌
No 80's mixtape was complete without this song! It was the Blondie-esque keyboard solo for me. Thanks for this---love to watch you guys discover and rock out to all my old faves!
Paul Shaffer of the David Letterman band played on the record and did the keyboard solo FYI
@@007ndc Paul Shaffer did that? Wow, yer right! Wiki says the awesome solo in Del Shannon's Runaway was the inspiration. The Blondie-esque observation is still pretty astute, as I'm sure they were dipping into the same well.
@@erickent3557 Now that you mention it, I can totally hear the "Runaway" solo, reincarnated here.
@@erickent3557 Yeah, it sounds like a Farfisa Organ, which is what Jimmy Destri played on most Blondie records.
the warrior
Jay & Amber, lead singer Patty Smyth solo "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" (with Don Henley) is great!!!!
Also you'll love Scandal's "Love's Got a Line on You"!!
They liked it when they reacted to it. I think the video is blocked though.
@@MichaelHHHH of course, its Henley :(
Patti Smith is a Punk singer who fronted Patti Smith Group in the mid-to-late-1970s. She is a very important figure in Rock'n'Roll. This is not Patti Smith.
This is Patty Smyth. Her last name is pronounced with a "long I" sound, like life, wife, or strife. That may sound petty and nitpicky, but they are different women entirely, and getting the pronunciation correct on this is pretty key. Patty Smyth and Scandal were pretty cool, but she was sort of a Dollar Store Pat Benatar. Their music is New Wave-influenced Pop-Rock. She had an early-90s US#2 Heartland Rock duet with Don Henley ("Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough, 1992), too. Weirdly, "Goodbye to You" wasn't much of a hit. It only hit US#65 (1982) on the Billboard Hot100, which is pretty low. It did hit US#5 on the Mainstream Rock charts, but that's not really how hits were gauged back then. I think it's become so well-remembered because it got a lot of love from MTV and was shown in heavy rotation. "The Warrior" was Scandal's only other significant hit, charting at US#7 (1984).
Patti Smith has that ever so slight growl to her voice that many musicians would kill to have. She's still a powerhouse singer today!!!
It's Patti Smyth
@@snowleopard6662 it's Patty Smyth. There's also another artist Patti Smith. It can be confusing.
@@shirleyjones9460 Yes it is easy to do
@@shirleyjones9460 they couldn't be more different. Enjoy both though
@@natashab3412 yes they are completely different. If I implied they were similar, it was meant only by their names
I'm a guy that loved listening to Scandal from the 80's. Loved a lot of female artist from the 80's.
I am so proud of you two reaching out to Patti Smith. She is an icon in the early rock era of the 80s.
Smyth
You nailed it. I think you really explained the spirit of the thing well. That’s how I felt watching her back in the day, too. She looks innocent and cute, but she’s actually a firecracker . Tough New York chick !
I put this band in a grouping with the Motels and Quarterflash. Female-fronted rock bands were having a really good moment in the early 80s.
Love this song!!! So cool!! Gotta love those 80s!! ❤❤❤❤. And just want to say Thank you for all you do!!! You make my day, week, etc. ❤❤❤❤
This is the epitome of the most popular sound of the 80s!
Amber nailed it...strong woman with a great voice
You need to check out The Hooters. “And We Danced” is such an 80s banger!
Anybody who likes that song, needs to check out the Bleachers " roller coaster"
Patty Smythe sang on the Hooters song, “Where do the Children Go”
She's doing our standard 80s dance also! LOL Great reaction - thank you!
When she went solo, she had an underrated song, "Never Enough"
Yet another great song from a great decade!!
Their best song!!! It's hard to believe this didn't quite crack the top 40.
Scandal had some monstrous hits in the 80s, for those who were paying attention; this song, "The Warrior", the slower "The Beat of a Heart", "Only The Young" (later covered by Journey!), as well as the Patty Smyth duet "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough".
Fun music geek fact- Patty Smyth's first husband was Richard Myers, aka New York punk/ poet icon Richard Hell; the scene he came out of included The Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads . . . and a different artist/ poet/ rocker named Patti Smith!
I agree with you but I just have to tell you that Journey didn't cover "Only The Young"...they wrote the song.
One of my all time favorite 80's tracks! I used to get so happy when this video would come on while watching MTV back in the day!
I went to an Alice Cooper concert back in the day and Scandal was the opening act. We got there late and Scandal was in the middle of their set. I was kinda aware of them but hadn't heard any of their songs. The band was so tight and her vocals were so powerful and pure. Their last song was Goodbye To You. She didn't dance like the video but she definitely moved to the rythym. The crowd in front of the stage moving in perfect sync with the music. It was a perfect moment. Of course I fell head over heels {another song you should react to} in love with her. It's the only thing from the concert I remember. It's tattooed on my brain
I saw this song done live not that long ago. She still kills it and still has that very youthful go for it type stage presence. She seems like she is one of those people that is really cool to hang around with!
Btw, she was wanted by Eddie Van Halen, to replace David Lee Roth, when he left the band. If i remember correctly, it was bad timing for her, so she had to decine. Would have been pretty cool! 😀
Patty Smyth is pronounced Smiiiiithe. Long y sound. Wonderfully talented woman who is still making music, though her output has been small over the years. She focused on family. 👏
One more from Scandal to react to is “Beat of a Heart” and “Isn’t It Enough” from her solo career for the other.
Pronounced S-My-th
@@snowleopard6662 Well since they couldn’t get the Y part to begin with, I left that out of the pronunciation.
@@NOLAgenX If They don't know it is just a opps, We can forgive 😏
@@snowleopard6662 I remembered that too. I thought I had it wrong when they were saying Smith. I used think they spelled it Smythe
@@generoberts9151 I think that is Correct 🖖
She let me approach her and shake her hand while shooting in Hollywood. It was a big deal for me. That voice! She was so sweet, and so beautiful in person too
I've wanted to be Linda Ronstadt since 1967 when I heard (and saw) her sing "Different Drum" with the Stone Poney's. Still want to be Linda Ronstadt. She was my first 'girl crush'. But, when this song came out in the 80's at the beginning of MTV videos, OMG! I wanted to be Patty Smyth. Her looks, her voice, her attitude in this video. Still love this video. And loved your reactions to it!
"Bye bye Baby...." 😂
So glad you got around to this! One of the quintessential early 80s songs/videos that was in heavy rotation on early MTV and I never got tired of it.
Patty Smyth sings and dances like she's the saucy younger sister of Linda Ronstadt in this video. What a voice she has! You gotta, just gotta, listen to her duet with Don Henley, "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough"
the music, the lyrics, the dance, the clothing, the fun.... pure 80s
Patty has damn sure aged gracefully over the years. For being 66 now (same age as I) she has been on the horizon forever.
Glad you guys heard her
Man, I had such a crush on this woman back in high school. Doesn’t hurt that she can sing like she does either.
This song is so catchy and one of my all time favorites. Patty Smyth sells it in the video with her sassiness and with how free she is on stage, as you captured well. You can check out some of her later solo work with "No Mistakes", "I Should Be Laughing", or "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" (duet with Don Henley). Much more introspective than the earlier Scandal songs.
I love this song! First video I ever saw from them. Patty has a fantastic voice.
When this song came on at the clubs me and the girls would tear up the dance floor!! It was our theme song! There was about 5 of us that would go out. SO much FUN!😅❤🎉
At one time Patty Smyth was the most in demand singer for commercials and NYC nightclubs especially 1980s. She Married the biggest NYC tennis star ever.
Johnny Mac.
How cool is Patty Smyth, beautiful, talented, and then marries John McEnroe to boot. Always loved this song
That voice and the band it was infectious 80s personified kick your shoes of in the gymnasium dance night .
Possibly the best whaoowhoawhaooo in the business. Man she's got some pipes :)
She made breakup fun.
She's sassy and disarming at the same time.
I had such a crush on Patty back in the day, especially in "The Warrior." Wooo!! And yes, it's Patty Sm(eye)th. :)
This song is one of the original bangers. I say that, because it's one of the first songs I ever heard that got stuck in my head forever. ALways. And her voice is underrated. Check out more of her.
the warrior
"Patty Smyth" (rhymes with Blythe) was the lead singer of Scandal. "Patti Smith" is an earlier rocker with big hits like "Because The Night".
Which is an amazing song.
Cute as a button, very unique voice, super talented...Patty Smyth!
For a great Scandal song choice, you should check out "Hands Tied", which in my opinion, is their best song, and a song you won't forget. Patti Smyth sings the neck out of it!
That's a great song, I love it !!
Hands Tied is absolutely Scandals best. Followed by Talk To Me
My absolute favorite!
This is their best song. She gets me every time she sings darlin, darlin, darlin
Such banger. Patti Smyth has a fierce voice and is do easy on the eyes😊
Great rockin song. I remember it during my skating rink years when this came out. FACTOID: Eddie Van Halen asked her if she wanted to join Van Halen in 1985, but she declined bc she was pregnant and didn't want to move to L.A. Most people can't believe that, but it's true.
What a great band we missed.
Yup that's a true story. She also didn't think he was really being serious, though. At least, that's what she said in some interview that I saw awhile back.
@@Tessmage_Tessera - The interview I saw with her was with Professor of Rock on RUclips. She seemed to take it as a serious offer, bc she accented how simple and short her answer was as "mmm? No". She said they were good friends and how easy it was for her to say no so casually.
@@dustinjones8887 I guess you and I have a different perception of what she meant. Or maybe we saw different interviews.
One of the best female voices of the 80's!!
The eighties was an era of great music. That's why I've been begging you to react to the Force MDS. Their songs " Love is a house" and " Tender Love" were big hits!
The vocalist, who happens to be married to tennis “bad boy” great John McEnroe, name is Patty Smyth; Patty Smith is a different singer.
Man, this one took me back to my adolescent years. It was the first track on a mix tape I had so I heard this one over and over and I still love it.
One of music's best kiss-off song! I absolutely have always loved this song. MTV showed it in heavy rotation for quite a while. Patti Smith has an amazing voice. This song is so 1982. From the clothes, to the keyboards, to the hair, all of it.
Good ol' 80s for real! Love Scandal! Love Patty! Great rocker voice! And great energy!
Patty "pipes for days" Smyth is egregiously underappreciated. Beat of a Heart is absolutely the most underrated rock song by a female artist ever. She absolutely kills it on that song and the band is fantastic as well.
Another great song. The whole album is killer.
What a fantastic trip down memory lane to my teen years. Great band, great song, always loved Scandal
Last night I stumbled upon the song "Hi Ren" by Ren, I haven't been blown away by a piece of musical art like this in quite a while. Since first seeing it I've watched dozens of reactions to it, I first saw it at around 11 pm and didn't stop till 3:30 am, I'm sure it will blow you away as well. It is only been out 5 months and it already has 13M views. The song is on the topic of mental health.
I second that!
Love Love Love Love Love this song!!!! I still listen to it!!!!! Thank you Legends!!! ❤🌹❤
I heard this song in the grocery store just the other day. I was dancing and singing (quietly) in the aisle. Love Patty Smyth! "Hands Tied" and "Beat of A Heart" are all time greats.
I love it when I catch an old gem of a song in the grocery store!
Love this song
The cool thing about this video, as a lady (lol) from the 80's, is how it totally encapsulates the late 80's in the best way possible. The voice, the command, the costumes (plus the keyboards & bass) are totally late 80's. It's def not rock but still super fun throwback.
I think that you meant the early 80s, some synth, nice boppy beat along with the skinny tie male fashion and Patty....swoon
I love this song. Good band. This was on the radio a lot back in the day.
The Motels "ONLY THE LONELY". (original video) ❤
the beat, they keyboards, the DANCE - OMG feels so 80s. Great song..
In the early eighties, there was a flood of really good new wave bands fronted by women coming out….Scandal, which was very poppy…The Motels, that did more emotional ballads…Missing Persons, that were very up-tempo but out there with their style and with thought-provoking lyrics, almost bordering on punk…..and Quarterflash, who were very rockin’!
I’m going to recommend “Find Another Fool To Love You” by Quarterflash….and do the live version they performed on “Fridays” in 1982….(it was a short-lived LA version of Saturday Night Live)….they absolutely kicked butt….I’m sure you’ll be impressed…use it next Friday!
What a great voice Patti Smyth had!
Yeah, one of my favorite singers! So lucky to see her back in the 80s (on a double bill with The Outfield!) Also glad she put out new music in 2020 that you might want to check out. Hope y'all have a great weekend!
You were lucky!!
Patty Smyth pronounces her name so it rhymes with "life". She is married to retired tennis player John McEnroe.
Patti Smith as a completely different kind of singer. Check out her hit Because The Night, a song she co-wrote with Bruce Springsteen.
Looking back at your earlier reactions I see that you already reacted to Because The Night, although you misspelled her first name with a “Y” instead of a “I”. Maybe you guys are mixing up Patty Smyth and Patti Smith?
What she saw in the man child who is a vulgar punk to this day (John McEnroe), is beyond comprehension.
If I’m not mistaken, Patty changed the spelling of her last name. She did so to avoid being mistaken for punk icon Patti Smith. And even though she changed the spelling to Smyth, she pronounces it as if it had a long “I.” She’s also married to tennis legend, John McEnroe.
i always loved "goodbye to you" SO much more than their bigger hit, "the warrior". this song has the angst, passion, and melody that the other never had. patty smyth is an energy catalyst!
now known more as mrs. john mcenroe of tennis legend, i also really loved her vocals with don henley's solo work on "heart of the matter", "sunset grill", and "sometimes love just ain't enough".
Agreed, this is the better song of the two.
This is one of my favorite songs. My mom would listen to it when she would get ready for work. Nostalgia
If this song doesn't get you up dancing nothing can help you so contagious 80s was clearly the best
An MTV staple in the early years...
Patty Smyth is one of my favorite vocalists. This song has such a grabbing groove, too.
I suggest She Sheila by the band The Producers for another great tune from this same early 80s era!😊
We did love her. I couldn’t help but dance and smile and sing along to this song!
Jay I received a message from your boy. He said he heard you saying that he wasn’t even in your top 3 anymore. He asked me if I could tell you that he would like you to reconsider. He said that he put on the most banging performance of a life time at the River Plate. He wants you to see how he took over the show when they amped up “Let There Be Rock” He’s looking to be your number 1 boy again. You won’t be disappointed. Remember he did this just for you at the River Plate Live! Angus wants his #1 spot back!!!
Seriously! If you LIKE THIS one, put the phones back on and listen to Scandal's "Loves Got a Line on You". BAD ASS!!!
Patty tears it UP there!
Oh hell...totally forgotten about this one, and this is a tune the band I did sound for in the early 80s did...😂
She is married to John McEnroe, the tennis player. I remember hearing her in an interview tell a funny story. She said John would bug her that he wanted to go on tour with her because he plays guitar. But Patty didn't want him to and said,"I don't ask to go on tennis tour with you and be your doubles partner do I?". He never asked her again. I love that. comback.
This album is the first cassette I bought when I got my first boom box as a gift.
Don’t forget The Warrior !!! 😇
80s kid, just love this!
My favorite songs that SCANDAL sings are:
1) Warrior
2) Beat of a Heart
3) Goodbye to you.
My wife asked me to post on her account here because I have been obsessed with Patty Smyth since the 80's and she showed me your reaction . My favorite song by ber is "Beat of a Heart". I watched MTV religiosly for years trying to record a copy of it. Finally I managed to request it. In 2006 I finally got to get to see her in concert, and she invited my sister and I backstage for a chat! I was wearing a Wile E. Coyote T-shirt that read "I am not a stalker" and she though it was hilarious. The nicest, most gracious lady you can ever meet, and I love her! Your chat has already shared most of the other info I could share. 😂
Like these people can really understand what it was like to be in the Moment of these songs and the times we lived in. Nothing compared to the drivel of today...... Glad to have really lived it....
There is another band name Scandal.
You should check them out.
All female artists and their play their own instruments.
They have a variety of styles of music
They been playing together for over 15 years
If you want I can link for this group
I love this song, but I seriously had a school dance flashback. We really thought we were it with those moves in the 80s!
My fav Scandal song And my fav 80s female singer. Love Patty’s 80’s dancing!
Scandal's first hit. It was all over MTV back then. Great song.
Patty has an album called Never Enough. There’s a song called Call to Heaven. It’s one of her best covers.
I suggested this a couple months ago nice of you to finally get to it!
