Quarterflash were a rarity - a band where FEMALE lead singer also was the sax player! Rindy Ross formed the band with her husband Marv, and they enjoyed their greatest success in the first half of the 80s. They didn't call it quits, though ... they put out a new album just last year! This was their first big hit, but they had to others, "Find Another Fool" and "Take Me To Heart". Both are excellent. P.S. Another early 80s female led band you should check out is The Motels. "Only the Lonely" and "Suddenly Last Summer" are classics. Laura Branigan is another great one, too ("Self Control")
I was just coming here to say the same thing but you beat me to it, I love that song! Amber, if you want to check out another awesome female sax player you owe it to yourself to check out Candy Dulfer and Dave Stewart's (The Eurythmics) Lily was here. "Find Another Fool", "Take Me to Heart", "Right Kind of Love", and "Night Shift" are all hits for Quarterflash...really underrated band in my opinion. I'm glad you checked them out, I was pretty sure you would like them. 😁👍
The name came from the phrase “Rock is three quarters foolish and one quarter flash”. They said that in an interview and I thought it was such a clever way to come up with a name.
One of the few Portland bands to make it! They were originally called Seafood Mama, as they played that bar so much starting out. The bar is gone now, but it's part of the city's legend.
It's an Australia saying, 3/4 foolish & 1/4 flash. It's not about "rock" however,, usually about a showoff or charlatan. And yes, Rindy describes that in their great interview.
Add "Night Shift" from the Movie of same name with Henry Winkler, Michael Keaton and Shelly Long. Marv Ross wrote the song along with Burt Bacarach and Carole Bayer Sager. Great tune and Great Movie.
"Find Another Fool" is an uptempo banger. Most people think it's Pat Benatar but it's Quarterflash. Not only sax but dueling fiddle too 👍🏼 It must be next!
The wife here...Even as a small child I absolutely loved this song when it come out..As others have mentioned it was quiet a rarity to hear a female rock lead..and an amazing saxophonist..Played this record out!!!
Gotta listen to the instrumental duet "Lily Was Here" by Candy Dulfer & Dave Stewart. Candy Dulfer is great female saxophonist. Dave Stewart who plays the guitar is from the Eurythmics. The duet is like a conversation between a saxophone and a guitar.
This was a hit when they were known as “Seafood Mama” in Portland, Oregon, a rock group that became a popular nightclub band. Membership included Rindy Ross (lead vocals and saxophone) and her husband Marv Ross (guitars). Circa 1980/'81 they revamped the band -- adding Jack Charles (guitars), Rick DiGiallonardo (keyboards/synthesizers), Rich Gooch (electric bass), and Brian David Willis (drums and percussion), becoming Quarterflash.
Fun Fact: the members of Quarterflash were all teachers when they became a band. I wonder if they went back to teaching once their music careers fizzled.

This came up on here and I knew it without a doubt. She was super cool. And I was wondering when you would notice she was the saxophonist. I am just singing along over here. We really had some of the all time best music in the 80s.
The Pretenders is a great Female led (Chrissie Hynde) rock band. Brass in Pocket is a good start, for Christmas 2000 miles is a great under played Christmas song!
Another woman that multi tasks is Sheila E. She sings plays drum and dances all at the same time. Chech out "Glamorous Life" I like her live performance at an awards show it has a super COOL surprise. Also, she was engaged to Prince.
Quarterflash was warmup band for Loverboy in 1982 at my first ever concert, when I was 18. I got all the bandmembers to autograph this album at the record store earlier that day. Love the music still. My favorite songs from them are Valerie and Williams Avenue. ❤
I saw Quarterflash in concert in 1983 at Great Adventure in NJ, love love Rindy Ross AND her SAX, they were fantastic live, I stayed for their second show that evening so I could see them all over again, so good.
So glad you finally did this song. I had suggested it several times and mentioned the sax. Another I've suggested numerous times and it has saxophone too is ONLY THE LONELY by the MOTELS.

This song is so much better live. You should see her extended sax solo! Oh my goodness! It is more than worth the price of admission. It is worth reacting to again.
Amber, I knew you would love that sax in this. Wow this makes me think of the early 80's. I wish you had footage of a performance to see more of the lead singer (Rindy Ross) playing that sax. Her husband Marv, the bass player, wrote the song. I think she is trying to convey being strong when you have to walk away sometimes. Just when I think nothing beats 70's music, well, darn it, I love 80's music too.
"Find Another Fool" and "Night Shift" by them are great. Give them a listen. God Bless P.S. If you want to appreciate Rindy Ross's Sax playing, do "Find Another Fool" live.
The singer also plays sax. If you want good horns and I know you do, Amber, you should check out "Take it Away." By Paul McCartney. The video is mesmerizing.

As someone who played sax in school band, when this album come out, it was awesome. Of course, in this song she's singing more so not as much saxophone, but there's lots of sax on the album which I naturally ran out and bought.
Quarterflash has a follow-up song to HARDEN MY HEART. It's called, FIND ANOTHER FOOL and the video of Rindy Ross blaring her saxophone will be an inspiration to Amber. So will HIP TO BE SQUARE by Huey Lewis and the News. The Motels have also been mentioned so I'm going to throw ONLY THE LONELY as well as CHANGE YOUR MIND into the mix. You can't go wrong with any of these great 8o's songs!! Have at it.
You were saying you don't get many bands with female leads... you should try The Pretenders... Chrissie Hynde is the front person of the band and rhythm guitarist. She has a unique voice that you instantly know it is her singing. "My City Was Gone" 'Back on the Chain Gang" "Brass in Pocket" "Middle of the Road" "I'll Stand By You" "Talk of the Town" They have a couple of Christmas songs too... "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "2000 Miles"
Bonnie Raitt "I can't make you love me" Is a song that I played over and over. That whole album was fire. She is known for her guitar playing but love her voice because it's raw. Sheryl Crow " Home" is another fantastic song. Merry Christmas Everyone! 🎅 🤶🧑🎄🧑🎄☃️❄🌲🎼

For any Quarterflash fans out there, check your vinyl copy of their first album. If you have a first printing, it may be worth something - there is a printing error on the back. The printers actually misspelled the record label name a couple of times - "Gellen" records instead of "Geffen".
@@dustywaynemusic6297 You might want to look into what its worth. I have a copy of that album, but for me to check into the value would be pointless as mine is autographed by the entire band. Good, good, good choice. Quarterflash doesn't get the recognition they deserve and this was my favorite song by them.
Voices Carry by Til Tuesday is a must for Female Friday
