    Whatever the reasons, sometimes an artist's name just needs to be changed on streaming platforms. Unfortunately, most digital distributors will tell you it's just not possible.
    The common solution that is presented is to just delete your old profile and re-upload your music to a new one.
    I'm here to tell you that you don't have to do that.
    It turns out changing your artist name on Spotify (and every other store) is not only possible, it's actually not quite as complicated as you might think.
    You want to change your artist name on Spotify? Here's how I did it.

      Syntax if you’re just trying to change the case of your name and not the spelling, that falls under a formatting issue and any distributor should be able to help you change that by submitting a metadata request to stores. If you’re trying to change the spelling (or change your name entirely) both Amuse and routenote will let you do this. You’ll have to transfer your entire catalog over to them and then delete it from your current distributor before initiating the change. From there, it’s a metadata change submitted to stores again.

    Ok so pretty much anytime me and my label making a collab realease using "&" it is making a new profile in the name of the collab. For example if the song called
    "ARTIST1 & ARTIST2 & ARTIST3 - SONGNAME"
    Distrokid makes a new profile named "ARTIST1 & ARTIST2 & ARTIST3" instead of placing the song under each artists profile page.
    This happend to last 3 releases we made. You can t use always fixer and wait weeks to fix the issue cause you re always out of release date.
    Any suggessions?

    Hi Tom, I asked spotify about spotify curator playlist and I wonder when changing name if my song will be lost from curators list, I want to confirm that it wont. Do you know anything about curators list?
    I asked spotify and I actually didnt get exactly what they mention, this is the message
    “If you request a metadata update it won't affect your track submission. But if you change the order of your track, a different song will appear to our editors and they might pitch a different song.
    If you plan to remove the main artist who pitched the track, that same track would disappear from our editors' dashboard.
    We always recommend checking the details of your release from the Home tab in Spotify for Artists to ensure nothing's changed even after you request a metadata update.
    Let us know if anything else comes up! If we can help with anything else, just let us know.”
    If I change name ,will track order change? If anyone has experience about curators list ,please help, cheers

    Hey! This has been SUPER helpful thank you for sharing your name change journey. I'm in the process of doing this for mine, and am curious how you would go about switching over a song that I am featured on with another artist since I didn't upload it, but want to transfer it over and have my new name on it?

    • @tomdupreeiii
      @tomdupreeiii  4 года назад +1

      You are so welcome! Thank you for watching. This is a tricky one. Since you didn't upload it, you'll need to have the other artist make the change for you, which means they'll have to go through the process of either having their distributor change it (if they will) or switching to a distributor that will. It may not be the ideal answer, but if they won't do it (or if you don't feel comfortable asking) you could always start uploading from a new profile and just leave that release as-is but link to it in your bio on your new profile. I hope that helps! Thanks for the question!

      @@tomdupreeiii Thanks for answering!! That all makes sense and is helpful. I might just have to take the latter here but won't give up. The second a distributor comes out with a feature to easily change artist names they will be number one!!! I find it ridiculous that most still don't provide this service since it is not impossible- & since it seems to be a bigger process distributors should at least provide the option for an extra cost for those who are serious.

If that doesn't work (or you don't want to try them again) you can try uploading your release through a different distributor (I recommend Amuse if you're not gonna use DistroKid). Make sure you use all the same metadata, including the incorrectly formatted artist name, and once that release shows up as a duplicate in stores, go through your new distributor to request the name adjustment and see if they'll handle it for you. If you just want to use a new name going forward, then you can just release your next project under the new name and DistroKid will create a new artist profile for you. And you’ll also be able to add more artists if you upgrade to the right plan. If you only maintain two artist slots and want to add your friend, then you’ll need to go through the name-change process so you don’t end up with three artists on your account. Hope that helps. Hey, nice video! Do you know how it works now that Distrokid has an option for changing the artist name? Are there any complications, things to be done in order to maintain followers and play counts etc?
    Edit: The way I see it, you go into the 'edit release' page, and from there you can simply change the the 'artist name'. Distrokid then suggests to update the name on all of my other releases. If I go through with that, is it likely that isrc-codes and metadata will be transferred -- as I understand that this is necessary to transfer followers/play counts etc?

    • @patmull1
      @patmull1 2 года назад +1

      I did changes both on Amuse and Distrokid. Distorkid changed the name super quickly like in two days I already could see new artist profile on Spotify. New artist page was created with the new name, so you definitely loose Spotify for Artists statistics etc... but on Distrokid everything should stay the same and sum up to the same data. At least I haven't noticed any problem on Distrikid administration.
      On Amuse, I'm still trying the change for three months. Now I have paid subscription, so things seems to got in move little bit and they are trying to respond in few days to my e-mails, so I hope it will work this time.

    Hey Tom, this video was really insightful! Was wondering if you could steer me in the right direction. I researched changing my name over the weekend and took the DK FAQ at face value. I deleted my 3 singles over the weekend and today tried to schedule an upload with the 3 singles under a new name (I have two artist slots) and it said there was a duplicate error. My first thought was maybe since i only gave it two days, give it a little longer? The songs are off of the stores I put them on so i'm paranoid that if I try again it will give me the same error. Do you think I should wait a day or two more? Thanks!!

    • @tomdupreeiii
      @tomdupreeiii  4 года назад +2

      Hey thanks for watching! Sorry you’re dealing with this. I’ve experienced the exact same thing. I was attempting to move from a different distributor to DK so my solution was to just stay where I was and I never did find a complete solution with DK. My advice would be to give it a bit more time with DK and see if the metadata might “purge” from stores after a set period of time. If that doesn’t work, you might try uploading without the existing ISRC code and see if they’ll assign a new one, thereby making it a “new file” in their system. And if that doesn’t work, maybe try support and see what they say about timeline. And then finally, if that doesn’t work, you could always upload these three songs via a different distributor for the time being and then release all subsequent releases through DK. After more time has gone by, you can attempt to transfer those songs back over until you don’t see the error message anymore. I know that last one sounds like a pain but that’s the only one I know for sure will work. Hope that helps. Thanks so much for the question. Let me know how it goes!

      Hey Sam, thanks for the question. Sorry you're having such a rough time with making the switch. It sounds like either Amuse or DistroKid is a workable option for you since DK has offered to help. In my case, I uploaded through Amuse using my old artist name and then requested the change through them once my catalog was on their platform. So they made the change for me. I didn't do it during the upload process. If I were in your position right now, here's what I would do: Since you've already deleted your songs from all platforms, I would try uploading them using your new name through Amuse first (since DistroKid is giving you the conflicting metadata issue). You literally have nothing to lose by trying your new name through Amuse first. The worst that can happen is you get the same conflicting metadata result from them that you got from DK, in which case you're still in the same spot you are now. And I'd start with just one song as a test run. If it works, upload the rest. If Amuse gives you the metadata thing too, then it's really up to you which distributor you prefer. It sounds like both are an option for you. Upload through your platform of choice and then request the change from there. I hope that helps. Best of luck with getting things switched. I know it seems like a huge pain right now (been there), but it's really just a blip on the radar in the grand scheme and you'll be glad you did it in the long run!

Were you using distrokid prior to amuse btw?

      Adir Itah Amuse will re-upload your songs to RUclips and DistroKid will take theirs down. Since you’ll be posting duplicates I’d think it should show up under the same topic you’ve already claimed.

    Hey Tom, did those 350 followers ever move over to the new page? and what about monthly listeners, just wondering. btw i just moved my entire catalog to amuse and it linked successfully. just put in for the name change now.

      Dude, that's awesome! Glad the first steps have gone well for you. Yes, all my followers moved, though I had to contact Spotify to make it happen (they were super easy about it). And all the listeners reset, but they built back up within the first month. Good luck with the rest of the process!

    Does this work across all platforms like apple music, google play and tidal. Also how do you switch all the distribution rights from distrokid to muse do you just email them a request to do so?

    • @tomdupreeiii
      @tomdupreeiii  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, it made the switch for me on everything. To move over to a different platform, you have to upload your song the exact same way you would normally. Just make sure to use all of the exact same metadata (artist, title, ISRC code, artwork). Once you've uploaded to the new platform and confirmed it appears twice in stores, you can delete it from the old platform and the new platform will automatically start collecting your money for you.

    I really want to change my artist name as well but I still worry about playlists I’m featured in, losing followers, and all the data I’ve had on my page for the last 4 years. CD Baby is my distributor so I don’t have any hope for it. 🤦🏽‍♂️

      If it helps, I retained all my playlist placements and data. And I got my followers transferred over by Spotify without issue. The only thing I lost was monthly listeners but that built right back up over the next month after the switch. I say definitely look into it!

      It’s possible that could fall under a formatting change, not necessarily a name change. That would make it much easier. You’ll have to ask your distributor and see what they say.

    I have a question! My name is Joe Kruger, but on youtube and apple music, it is shown as Joe Krüger, which is incorrect. Would I contact my distributor (which is Amuse) to get that changed? In other words, I can't change the name myself on apple music or youtube?

    • @tomdupreeiii
      @tomdupreeiii  3 года назад

      Yes, you would need to contact your distributor to get that changed. Unfortunately, streaming platforms won't let us do that ourselves (yet). Fortunately though, that should simply fall under the category of a formatting issue, not necessarily a name change, so it should be a pretty easy fix.
