Plus, the Freelancer has 4 gimballed Size 3 guns, vs the Cutlass's 4 gimballed size 2s, or 4 fixed size 3s. A slight edge with fixed weapons not working optimally at this point.
      The comparison is old, and no one who loves one ship or another is going to change their stance at this point. And as I stated in my initial comment, finding a ship aesthetically pleasing is entirely subjective.

      The Mercury also doesn't look like it can carry any vehicles. And the rear ramp, IDk if I like that. I sure love the side door on the Lancer to make quick work buying and selling at outposts. I already don't like the Cutty for this, except that in the future we should be able to jump up into the side doors. As a solo pilot, time away from the controls magnifies the danger I might encounter. The Cutlass is a truly multirol gunship. It can haul troops into combat, cargo, vehicles and dish out damage to ground and air alike, as it is supposed to be able to carry rocket launchers in the missile pods. Plus it has a a tractor beam for acquiring cargo. Just for the handling, the Cutlass is on top.

    • @TheSilence1
      @TheSilence1 4 года назад +7

      That's a good point. I don't think he mentioned the missiles at all. With all that firepower the cutlass was designed to be the aggressor in the fight. And when you're the aggressor, defense is the other guy's problem.

      Cutlass upgraded can easily out-match an upgraded Freelancer. Those two shield generators don't make as big a difference then, because you can't supply enough power to run everything with two top end generators. Also, the Cutlass has a stronger hull, and against a ballistics equipped opponent, the Freelancer is not tougher at all. They are both good ships. Stock I think I would agree with Morphologis, the 'lancer is a little better. With upgrades, especially if you like combat, Cutlass becomes far superior. Also the Cutlass has the 6 jump seats in the rear with still having room for 2 dragonflies. You can haul quite a few people in it if you need for uh (cough) purely legal salvage.

    Before I eve started watching the whole thing I was blown away with how pretty the opening shots are, well done. Sad to see that the Cutty Black always seems to be losing these kind of competitions. Such a cool concept but with only 1 Shield genny (that has a hole in it!) and a lack of punch compared to the supposedly more civilised ship it feels like it should cost less. That said the salvage gameplay isn't in yet and I still feel like the Cutlass Black is gonna be the Toyota Hilux of space, a technical that can do a bit of everything, if you fit it for that.
    What would you change on the Cutlass Black to bring it up to parity with the Freelancer?

    • @LupusAries
      @LupusAries 4 года назад +15

      Personally?
      Change the Cockpit, the Dash should be lower as in the Pilot's Position it can interfere with Forward and lower visibilty.
      Also ejection seats for all Crew members, with parachutes.
      A Fighter without ejection seats is Just a Bit nono to me.
      Raise the canopy and seating Position for better rearward visibilty, make the Sideplates on the canards smaller.
      Uparmor the engines.
      Make the Sidedoors useable by either ladders or with a ramp.
      Maybe adding a slot for a second Site 1 shield?
      Problem is though how to Balance that with other fighters and how that will affect the ship's handling once we have physicalized components.
      Could be a tradeoff between better Handling and more durability.

    MORPHOLOGIS: I love, LOVE, !!!*LOVE*!!! the production value of your videos!! Thanks for being such an awesome quality content creator for Star Citizen.
    I have a suggestion for a follow-up video to this one. Under the same premise, multi-crew ship vs multi-crew ship, how about making a MISC Freelancer vs RSI Constellation Andromeda video. I would argue that I can do everything another can do a Freelancer in an Andromeda, but better.
    I'm suggesting this because, as you said in this video, you can really feel the weight of the Lancer but the shields and pilot-controlled weapons make up for that, with regard to surviving a fight. With that said, I LOVE my Andromeda. It's usually my daily flyer (of the 16 ships in my hangar). I choose to fly the Andromeda solo because of the shields and size 4 weapons and typically do really well in whatever I want to do.

    Fighting in the stock freelancer feels completely different. While it hits decently hard still, the slower firing turrets seemed to have more trouble converging on a target. Plus the reduced agility really feels bad during combat. And if you are going to do hauling upgrading to the Max is better in every single way. It does boil down to playstyle. If you really want a jack of all trades it is hard to beat the cutlass. If you want to focus more on trading then the freelancer (max) is a better choice

    The different fighting tactics are perhaps better referred to using combat flight sim jargon (and real combat pilots) as 'turn and burn' (small ships doing hard circling turns) verses 'boom and zoom' (hit hard and extend safely away, turn, come back for another pass). Conceiving combat tactics as such in SC will help guide in-game behaviour, because many (most?) players will try to turn fight regardless of the specs of their ship. Good video!

    I wanted a Freelancer first, because 2 shields and stats looked better. Then I tried them both. I ended up buying a Cutlass Black for the following reasons: Cockpit visibility, overall agility and practicality. The FL cockpit visibility makes me wanna puke, it handles (and looks) like a flying potato, and it takes more time to get in and out. The Cutty has practical side doors, and soon to be tractor beams. It can sit 9 players and you can get a cyclone + greycat + 2 dragonfly in it, that can be deployed on the ground very fast. I consider the Cutty as a do it all ship (cargo, combat, dropship), as for the FL, it's more of a hauling ship. I liked the Cutty so much, I also bought the Cutty red... Thank you for the video!

    It might be better for most people who aren't sure to start at the Cutlass and upgrade it as they like, and rent a Freelancer base and MIS to compare. Individual mileage may vary with the Cutlass' features, some of which like the tractor beam are still being developed, and it really needs a lot of upgrades to start to shine.
    The Freelancer is somewhat similar in that it needs its weapons and shields upgraded to compare to the MIS, but either version can be rented to sample the base and semi-upgraded experience and starting at the Freelancer would make it more difficult for someone to downgrade.

    I would say Cutlass due to multicrew gameplay options.
    - Haul multicrew vehicle
    - Haul 2 spacebikes
    - Tractor beams forward and aft for salvage work (not yet implemented)
    - Rear ramp airshield (not yet implemented)
    - Side doors for easier salvage cargo handling
    While not (currently) as efficient in combat the Cutlass offer more versatility for a multicrew of players.

    I've been telling people in universe for the past few months, the Freelancer is the better ship, the Cutlass is the cooler ship. I've owned both for years. Currently have a base Freelancer and a Freelancer Max. The base Freelancer is going away once the Star Runner drops, and I'm good with that. I know at least two guys in game that will be CCU'ing their Cutlass black to a Freelancer.

    Gunner is pretty clear, but how do the other positions share the work? Especially Pilot and co-pilot. Special positions like in the Cutlass red or similar would be interesting too. Will there be a full bridge crew, with navigation, communication, engineering weapons, etc. for large ships?

    Basically freelancer is a big safe comfy tube, armed armored, with amenities and escape pods, it's too cramped to role play, but it can carry friends and make use of them.
    The Cutlass is a medium fighter with a cargo hold that can carry multiple vehicles and has drop seats, it's 'kids first drop ship' it's the better ship for multi-crew if you plan to socialize a heck of a lot.
    If you want to focus on you, get the freelancer. If you want to adventure with friends, especially on the ground, get the cutlass.
    Also freelancer max can carry vehicles like the cutlass, but has slightly fewer seats. It's a great middle ground between the two, but more expensive than both.

    So I have a cutlass black and have considered the freelancer given I play solo quite often, but of late I’ve started to play with other people, just random people on the same server. It’s soooo much more fun and buddying up in a cutlass is great. You can nearly double the shields in the cutlass by upgrading the module making it a bit more tanky, but you need to grind a bit to do that, same with the guns.

    This video touches on one of my lingering worries pertaining the Star Citizen persistent universe gameplay: I expect to play on my own, but hope I'll be able to play with a friend. I'm not fluent enough in spoken english to really expect I'll fit into larger orgs.
    So, I was growing rather dubious of my early on investment in Star Citizen, the Constellation, whom has since then become the Constellation Andromeda. The ship being essentially a crew ship of ideally 4 (pilot, 2 gunners, snubcraft) seemed like it'd me an undercrewed non-ideal choice once I actually got into the game. I love everything the Constellation can do, but there just didn't seem to be a ship of downgraded scale that existed from RSI that could provide a similar experience but be cattered to the single player where another player could be jumpseated in to man the turret, or amount to other tasks if a fold-out copilot seat was available.
    As a spaceframe, the Apollo came very close to what I was actually pining from RSI as a perfectly sized ship with the Connie aesthetics I liked, but CGI seemed determined to leave that spaceframe as medical ship only.
    Where exploration ships are concerned, it's kind of the same deal. The 315p is a single seater, the Terrapin came really darn close, but was still a single seater... and then the Carrack is simply way too much by comparison (same for the Endeavor).
    Then I look at the stars of this particular video, and I remain crestfallen.
    The Freelancer has a pretty crap cockpit experience where I'm concerned, and the diminutive turret at the very back feels like an awkward add-on. The added extra bunks just feel redundant. The ship has inconsistencies that make me feel like it doesn't know what it wants to be, and enough flaws for me not to want to fly it with a friend. I have a hard time thinking of how I could convince my friend to fly with me for that kind of experience, versus us flying 2 separate one-seaters.
    Whereas the Cutlass feels off too, because its level of practicality feels designed for a group of four people, but without the ability to fully support them. The turret feels more integrated, but grating to use.

    Funny, during the progression of my fleet, my first multi-crew ship was the Freelancer. Well, the Freelancer DUR, but that wasn’t available yet so I got the base model as a loaner. That ship eventually became an Aquila. But I picked up the Cutlass Black after the rework and loved that ship. Eventually though, I came full circle. My Cutty Black became a Freelancer MIS as my dedicated combat ship. Sometimes I miss the Cutlass, but I felt that it’s lack of speciality is what made it boring. It really is a jack of all trades, but lacks that uniqueness. The same can be said about the Freelancer, except if you’re into hauling. Visibility is garbage, and it lacks that utility like you said, but the Freelancer is great at doing work with friends whereas the Cutlass is fun with friends without getting much done. Another great video, as always!

That means that you have to be careful about what shields you put in the ship. Cutlass Black, despite the obvious drake, hate coming down from the Dev team stripping the Drake line of most of its survivability, and nerfing the Cutlasses weapons with the rework she's still the best "Multi-crew" ship. I can see why you'd think the MIS is better solo, though I'd really argue it depends on what you do with them and how to kit them out. For multi-crew, whether lite crew or a full load of semi-drunk marine friends. Cutlass just gives you more. We've done hot drops spitting out two crewed Cyclones out the back in a hard burning pass by installations, Then brought the cutties, back to retrieve the marines. You can't do that with a Freelancer, and if you're against a competent pilot you're not going to be allowed to boom and zoom, they won't sit still while you try to make strafing runs, we'll get on your side and burn through you while you flail around like a drunk whale.
    To be clear, I abhorrently HATE the amount of drake hate coming down from the devs in the name of "balance" And that might be a good argument not to get a Cutlass, but having flown the dark skies and returned with missing engines, and smoldering scars down my hull, the Cutlass with a touch of love, and a lil Dev balance is a very competent bird.

    I like both ships, but I have to disagree with your conclusion.
    The view from the Freelancer's cockpit is very restrictive, and the ship is rather heavy in terms of its flight characteristics. The turret can't really engage to the front.
    The Cutlass is a great ship as long as you are flying your spaceship like a spaceship. That means thrust vectoring, and using your main engines as your main source of vector changes. Dodge, weave, and evade and you won't need to disengage very often at all. Upgrade your shields and you won't have to disengage at all. In terms of the turret, the fact that the gunner can engage the same target as the pilot makes all the difference in the world. That's what I have my gunners doing most of the time. They only switch to other targets when we go into a defensive posture.

  • @BreandanOCiarrai
    @BreandanOCiarrai 4 года назад

    If you're not afraid to spend ordnance, the 16 missiles on the Cutlass balances out the crappy aim on the dorsal turret. It's a paper DPS ship, so getting hit is a bad idea, but when you factor the missile payload in it can be a nasty hit-and-run ship, whereas the more limited maneuverability of the Freelancer necessitates tanking. So I guess it's all about how you prefer to fight.

    I hear what your saying and it is a valid perspective. I think I personally prefer the Cutlass as the pilots view is much more emursive. I get what your saying with the twin shield generators, it is a big advantage & the extra cargo is a benefit if your hauling. I just live the flexibility of the Cutlass, the additional options it possesses. If you are looking up the separate ship types and their variants the Cutty Red offers respawn and medical, which would be a great benefit to new group players. The upcoming Blue should be more of a tank, as you put it. In the Freelancer range you could opt for a MAX which I believe offers more room for vehicles (like the Cutlass) and additional cargo if you want that route. The multicrew experience between these two types and variants will be specific to the group and their game play requirements. Great vid & thanks for letting me know about the turrets, I have never really got in a Cutlass turret and it does look limiting view wise. :)
