I used to work on a shipyard that built navy vessels (technically not a Naval Architect though). STill whether or not our current guidelines hold true in a space age is anyones guess.
    I got following remarks:
    1) Windows=No!. Modern navy vessels hardly have any windows. They are always a weakpoint. You can find windows: at the bridge, at flight control, in all doors leading in/out of the citadel, sometimes at the security offce next to the main boarding gangway. That's it.
    2) Captains quarters is always close to the bridge. This may mean a) on the same deck b) directly below the bridge c) directly at the stairwell leading to the bridge
    3) Almost all naval vessels, even small ones, have separate sleeping and dining areas for 1) officers 2) NCOs and 3) seamen. Amongs officers, captains quarters are as mentioned usually close to the bridge, doctors quarters are usually close to the infirmary. Even offshore patrol vessels, the small coastal boats, often have separate dining for officers and crew.
    4) Pathing can be tough. since a bulkhead (navy speak for wall) is always stronger than a door, only few decks have corridors from the front all the way to the back, especially below the water line.
This can lead to extremely confusing pathing. I know a ship where the path from front mooring deck to mess hall would be: "down one deck, aft two sections, up one deck, aft two sections, down one deck, forward one section"
I own a Hammerhead, and the ONE THING that bugs the hell out of me, is the loose cable in the portside walkway towards the front turret. THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN, and if it did HEADS WOULD FIGURATIVELY ROLL.

    • @andybenson4877
      @andybenson4877 9 месяцев назад +14

Even worse, on the Hammerhead the pipes in the head leak. Both port and starboard side heads have pipes running directly overhead of the sinks and mirrors. If you look closely, they are constantly dripping water. If for nothing else, this -- I Will Never Own A Hammerhead. (even if I have one as a loaner)

I aways notice the cabling as well. I once did electrical work on a navy vessel and the inspections where tough! Bad alignment in a cable tray was not allowed, not even talking about a loose cable :) Its also why i'm not buying a Connie until that loose cable on the ground is sorted!

A larger interior actually makes sense in a starship vs a Naval ship because it’s storing a critical resource that few sci fi writers consider. Air. As long as the compartment are secured and not breached they offer potentially days worth of sweet air in the event of life support failure.

    • @prjndigo
      @prjndigo 9 месяцев назад +6

The flip of that is that usually on naval vessels your hallways and rooms aren't primary structure/service/engineering support looms but in spaceships the interior structures ARE all of that because you want them disconnected from the hull and almost all systems have to directly interact with them in multiple locations... so the interiors ARE the ship and the rest is attachments and buffered defensive structures. Like a baby in the momma.

A fun note is that style of bridge is likely the origin of the usage of "bridge" aboard ships. In literally 'bridges' the hull of the ship to give a high vantage point for navigation.

I was in the navy for 8 years. On the USS Juneau, we shared 4 toilets and 4 showers for 100 enlisted. This head was located in-between two berthings (hence the 100 for that head). You had to go through one or the other berthings to get to that head, so it's not unheard of.

    • @KraytandBarrel
      @KraytandBarrel 9 месяцев назад +10

I was on the USS George Washington and because of our size, my berthing had access to 3 different adjacent heads. While we did shared those heads with two other berthings, the ratio of shower per person was much higher. Luckily, one of the heads was next to the reactor berthing and it always had hot water. It was kind of a conspiracy on why that was.

8:30 I remember in an Idris focused ISC they mentioned it's powered by 2 suped-up hydogren fusion generators - the large injector rises from below to 'inject' additional super-compressed liquid Hydrogen/Deuterium into the reaction chamber, which is kept cooled and so can only be exposed for a few seconds at a time.

  • @stormycatmink

The large bridge airlock, if I recall, lead to a large lifeboat on the other side of the airlock. The aftermarket kit is intended to upgrade the anti-ship capability by replacing 4 of the turrets (2 top and 2 bottom) with the Behring M2C PDS turrets, so if anti fighter is what you're after, that should improve things. Also, it offers a spinal lazor beam weapon. I don't care how powerful it, a giant beam cannon is far superior to a simple railgun.
Also, I can confirm on the separation of officers and enlisted. It's a big deal (to a silly extent, almost) on naval vessels. They will duplicate just about all facilities on even the smallest of ships. Separate lounges, dining, toilet, shower, and put the rooms as far apart as feasible. I was in the US Army, and although we too had separation between officers and enlisted, in our unit, the officers often ate with the soldiers when deployed, shared the gym and most other facilities, and they got grief from the Navy guys about it. So uncivilized, apparently.

Those sim pods use to be where the flight ready room is, which is now a gym. It's common for a captain of a naval ship to have more than one personal quarters. Most have a small room right off the bridge, and a larger more private room for personal belongings etc. Those two private rooms off the crew quarters were added back in 2019? It was covered in an ATV, giving the SQ42 player and old man a private sleeping place. Within that same episode dev's talked about adding private officer quarters but seems like that never happened. :(
I'm not so sure the Idris will have a T1 medbed, outside of medical ships I think T2 will be the biggest.

Yup, I wasted a weekend looking for this ship. Back in Star Citizen's Kick-starter, they said this: "The people who pledge for their spaceships will get to test-fly them long before the general public." This event really did fail to live up to that promise: this was the in-game reveal of the Idris interior. At the very least, they should have had a docked idris at one station for people to tour around the interior, and ideally should have let Idris owners spawn one, whether in Free Flight mode or even just for the weekend in the PU given the ship has no missions or gameplay for it yet. Ultimately, this event made people in my Org less interested in trying the latest patch, because they quite rightly called out that it would be a complete waste of time. I was excited, then crushed, and my friends were right - SC marketing is a bitter joke right now. And without testing? Yes, all the advertising pictures for this ship show it from above, where it has lots of guns. But once we have precision targeting, those two turrets underneath will rapidly die and this will be a glorious white elephant of a ship. Sorry CIG, do better.

  • @Shadefyre343
    @Shadefyre343 4 месяца назад +1

Whenever I watch videos on the bigger ships of SC, I can't help but wonder if they're expecting a point in the game's future where the playerbase will be large enough to be full of people who want to crew someone else's ship rather than captain their own. Right now, the game does seem to still be fairly niche because of the alpha state, relatively slow development of anything that isn't something for them to sell you, and high hardware requirements. But to really fill out this universe in the future, they'd have to have ways to bring in a lot more players. I'm curious if they've ever really talked about that aspect of their development roadmap, insofar as one could exist for a game with 10+ years of development ahead.
It would be neat perhaps to have a dedicated system for hiring other players as crew with paid wages, to get people who aren't in big orgs or who simply don't have their group of friends around at the time to group up, have some adventures, and make some credits from someone who dropped a fat stack on a big ship.

No mission on the mobi, so after watching it drift around for about 20 minutes we decided to see if we could just slip inside for a look.
The SECOND that one of us opened the docking port and boarded the mission popped up. But is was for a SECOND Idris that spawned inside the Sun. This one was crewed by Wintermute-CIG, Raven-CIG, Wakapedia-CIG and some others.
After chasing it to the Terra jump gate we battled with it for about 2 hours and just as we boarded the main hanger and started to engage the guards....30k. Sigh. Searched for the rest of the weekend, but never saw the mission again.

On naval ships, the CO and XO staterooms are in separate parts of the ship. This avoids 1 bad hit taking them both. It goes farther than that as well. Crew berthings are spaced fore and aft and port and starboard with division personnel spread out between them so, for example, you don’t loose all of your Radiomen by hitting a single mine. For practical gameplay and layout reasons, this would obviously go too far.

  • @Dirk_Dandy
    @Dirk_Dandy Месяц назад

Naval Officer here. Heads in berthings are 100% normal. The berthings on this ship are very spacious compared to a modern Naval vessel. Imagine a maze of tightly packed together racks stacked 3 to 4 high. Officers usually have staterooms above the waterline (Junior Officers sometimes are below the waterline). Officers have staterooms that are 3 to 2 people depending on if you're a division officer or a department head. CO and XO are the only people on board with their own room. XOs usually doubles as an office. Captain's stateroom is centrally located to be ivo the Bridge and CIC. His room is typically an office with an additional room for sleeping. Larger ships may have a lounge and dining room mixed in. There is also something called an "At sea cabin." this is a smaller stateroom the COs can sleep in while the ship is at sea that is usually connected or close to the bridge.

14:30 in the upcoming balance (with damage sim etc), the devs have specifically stated that light fighters will NOT be able to take out capital ships, at all.
You will need Torpedoes or at least Ares Ion / Inferno's to make any real progress through a capital class shield and power plant.
So it makes sense that the Idris wouldnt bother with S2 / S3 turrets, but focus on larger opponents.
Equally, Light Fighters dont have any anti-idris weaponry, because they're simply not meant to fight an Idris (and would rather just stay out of its way).
So the reason for example a Connie or C2 has anti-fighter turrets, is because they are still vulnerable to lighter fighters.
Now, sure, if you brought 100 Arrows constantly nonstop firing on the Idris rear shields, they would go down.
But thats not the Idris role, its role isnt to swoop in as an anti-fighter screen. It's to stay in place as a territorial power projection, for the most threathening targets your own fighthers cant deal with. It's there to take out Hammerheads and Connies, and to some extent Perseuses or Nautiluses.
The stuff that your regulra fighters might struggle with.
If you have nonstop light fighters buzzing you, you bring out a Hammerhead (which also, with the upcoming balance, wont be threathened by Arrows or Gladiuses (much)).
We have to not stick with the mindset of todays balance, where 1 tiny mosquito can stay glued to the blind spot of a Hammerhead and just wear it down in 5 minutes.
That will change, so it makes no sense to design ships to todays balance.
Also keep in mind, the final Idris will have plenty of CIWS that automatically shoot down torpedoes and lighter ships that come very close.
So it already has automated defences for that. Especially when Flak comes into the game later on. (also confirmed by the devs).
Why have a S2 flak cannon when you could have a S5 flak cannon on your idris?

although you may consider this less cinematic, I think it still gave a good perspective, especially on what it is like while being used by multiple players, seeing people running in the background and such gave it some life, which makes sense given its colossal size, so still a good and interesting review of the ship as always

So as a Naval officer its interesting to see the officers not be accommodated in one wardroom and be more separated from the ratings, but also no senior rates mess vs junior rates mess. Would've made the ship bigger I'm sure but wouldve been nice to see.

Honestly, as if right now I am here because the Idris will be our social area of Squadron42.
I will see this as a Squadron 42 asset until we have the gameplay and tech that let's us evaluate it as a multiplayer-ship...
...and as a Singleplayer HUB Asset this is absolutely incredible.
    1. Because of it's a bit more complex layout you will learn to navigate it more and more during the campaign which will probably build your relationship with it more and more
    2. The design is simply something else (I don't think I know many sci-fi games with a ship that is so big yet has such a detailed design (and we don't even see all the props for SQ42 yet)
    3. The size of this as your HUB means that between missions you have enough space to actually relax for a bit and not feel like during that you are stuck in one room
How I see it: I imagine this kind of like a bigger version of the Aurora from Metro Exodus. There you could take time (especially between each area) to simply talk to the crew and feel the current vibe of the crew. It was incredibly atmospheric and one of my absolute favorite aspects of that game and also pretty unique since not a lot of story-games have such a place (most of the time it is one level after the next). This then (if used like I understand it right now) is a bigger version of that but in Space and with a lot more freedom to move and a lot more "stuff" to do (hopefully).
Ultimately my personal "expectation" for the story as something very impactful is that towards the end of the campaign we either loose the Stanton (your Idris) in battle or we are separated from it for the last missions, really giving us a feel for the stakes as we no longer can rest between missions but need to MOVE FORWARD. IF they would even destroy the Stanton it would also from how I see it be a pretty emotional punch as it will probably be the area we see most of in the game. This is of course all only speculation with a bit of wishful thinking of how I would use this HUB in SQ42
As for SC. We still have to much tech to go for me personally to really tell how we will use everything this ship has to offer

Hey Morph, retired Navy Chief here. The layout of this frigate is rather interesting. There's more of a cinematic feel in this ship, but it is logical in the layout. Except for the enlisted/officer quarters. On most naval ships, the officer's quarters would not require access by traveling through the enlisted quarters. Instead, you'd find the officer's quarters closer to the bridge. There would be junior officers who would live closer to the enlisted, but they would be separated. Otherwise, this ship ROCKS. I'd love to be part of the crew for an Idris, but I certainly wouldn't want to own one unless I could devote plenty of gaming time with a large enough crew to make it worth my efforts.

I think it makes sense that the idris is only realistically available to orgs, as a single person with this ship wont make sense. I dont see why there couldnt be a middle and smaller tier co-event going where something like carrack was available for your handful of friends, and an F8C was on the board for a solo player. This would stratify the player base based upon normal party size and would allow everyone a shot at something they could do with their available friend capacity.
There is no need for such an unforced error like we just had. The hype led to an incredibly foreseeable screw up where most people are going to be disappointed, maybe a couple of hundred of people feel like they got something (ignoring how they felt about the time:reward aspect), and only two people thrilled.
I really think CIG could benefit from quietly asking a few people outside of the building, who are dedicated to the game, how they would run an event based upon what CIG wanted to do, and what CIG was willing to use as incentive.

Thank you for your well-thought-out ship tour and I agree with your comments on how poorly the event was designed. It would have been nice to have one tour from planet to planet for players to check out. I think a better design for the mission would have been linked with lore and have the Idris be out of fuel and therefore stationary until captured and re-fueled with a starfarrer. A final destination could also have been added, but to add difficulty the UEE would launch interdictors to recapture, giving opposing players multiple opportunities for capture.

Thank you for the video, I've been excited to get a good look at the inside of an Idris for a long time! Overall it looks like a very fun and exciting ship to wander around in, and I'd absolutely love to be hanging out in that hangar bay with ships coming and going. Personally, I'm hoping we'll maybe get an easier look at the Idris during Fleet Week this year - since they've already been doing the Javelin Tour for years, maybe this year they can have an Idris Tour to go along with it...?
The only thing that really struck me as a questionable decision in the ship's design is those bridge hallways; I'm glad there's an elevator to the bridge as an alternative, because those hallways look like massive weakpoints if you could deny access to/potentially depressurize the bridge once the shields are down. I'd expect them to have a lot more structure/armor around them like the rest of the ship, but maybe they're just counting on shields to take the brunt of the fire; I wonder if Maelstrom will allow them to be taken off of the ship entirely?
Still, a fantastic look at a fantastic ship - I can't wait to learn more when the ship becomes slightly more accessible.

Hey! I really love the Map lay out you have for this ship tour, it's something I feel will be invaluable when we get larger and larger ships. Small critique, when you're displaying where you are, you put and stationary red circle. If you made the graphic move/spin and be a bit brighter, maybe changing the color (animate it in some way to draw the eye easier to it) I think that would clean the graphic up for how short of a time we get to see the map. (I know I can pause it to search, but thought I'd put this out there)
    Awesome video!

As cool as it looks having a raised bridge, it's also silly for a combat ship. What would better if the bridge had a combat mode where it sink into the body od the ship, or blast shutters cover the glass and you get that 'see through armour' that's on the tank.

16:11 Idris bridge, dead hooker for scale.
Personally, I hate exclusive events with rewards for "lucky" people or ones that can leverage hundreds of loyal minions.
I'm not toxic to the point where I'd try to mess with people doing the events, but it doesn't take a lot of imagination to see it not uniting the playerbase.
I'd be more than happy to do some casual grind (deliver XXXX SCU of ??? to ??? or something like that) for small rewards, maybe a bad version of a ship/vehicle that can't be melted or CCUd.
If you think that sounds greedy, then please keep in mind that we are supposed to eventually earn ships ingame anyway.

Funny enough, I've logged in yesterday into the PU for the first time in a while after having played the pirate swarm MM test over the last couple of days and after playing around for a bit (redoing my Bounty Hunter access missions) I suddenly got the message about the Idris event.
I've listened to and read from so many players being angry about not having had a chance to try their hand at the event over the last 2 days, and each time I was just rolling my eyes because I think people are way to hyperfocused on if they can get that ship... so when I saw that the Idris event had been comming to "my" server, I had such a laugh I nearly wet myself.
It's an awesome ship and I will try it out at some point when it's displayed on the IAE floor, but I don't have the number of people to crew it and thus no real interest to own one for myself, so I just had some fun reading the chat that spontaneously formed a raiding party.
I'm still smiling like the Joker on speed thinking about it. I find things like this hillarious.

OH... I disagree here. There is no conflict.
The ONLY way someone gets to sit in that seat.. is if they were chosen by the org. Maybe the org leader... maybe the streamer... doesn't matter.
They were CHOSEN to do it. If they weren't... the rest of them will just shoot that person and replace them with the one who's honor it will be to have it.
Why do they choose this person? Simple... because that person will spawn the Idris, spawn it often AND have the ability to contact enough people to actually run it.
So no... I think you were correct a bit earlier in your statement where you could see the logic in this.
    21:57
Totally. Right on the money there.
Great video. The event could probably have been planned a little better but in the end I think it served its purpose. Always love hearing your take on things. I also loved that you couldn't help yourself and had to add some comments on the architecture.

I figured the Argo bay was for passengers/prisoners, not cargo, as they could take cargo straight to the main hangar and use the lifts there. Also, I seem to recalling seeing a ramp, coming from the rear hangar area, for ground vehicles.

This Idris event really was a big "nothing" event. Having to spend hours and hours cycling through servers just to find the "chance" of encountering the Idris mission. Regarding the somewhat strange layouts for some of the convoluted hallways and access paths for certain rooms (like the gravity amplifier etc).
Of course we see this on irl ships too, although that isnt an "excuse" per say.
But it just means you cant always design everything to be perfectly optimal. The devs really struggled to fit everything into the mesh.
I'd rather have a gravity amplifier room in a weird place, than NOT have that room at all but have wider more open logical routes.

15:25 I do not think that will just be an emergency air lock, in many science fiction shows (Such as Star Trek) the captain often has a "Captain's Yacht" or a special emergency vehicle that can be accessed from the bridge and which will act as an escape vessel. But that's just a theory... A space theory.

I feel like the Argo Cargo storage is 100% for the Ship storage when it's not being used. You jump down there, hop in, and fly it up to where the cargo is being staged on the flight deck, or fly down to the off ship location that is staging cargo. It's would probably be making many loops after being pulled out, and then go back there, empty, when done.

The separation of officers and enlisted is if anything more pronounced in the Navy than any other branch. Of course a real frigate also has a complement of over 200 sailors, and the only ship in star citizen that is remotely likely to hit that crew size is the Bengal, which will still be a tiny fraction of the crew size of an actual carrier. It’ll be interesting to see if there’s a clearly defined officers country aboard the Bengal, but not surprised that they don’t have it on the Idris.

There were both NPC Idris spawns and manual developer spawns of the Idris - just not on every server shard. If you want in on events like these, you have to do a lot of server-hopping and, by extension, a lot of logging in on different friends. I'm not sure if that'd be my first choice in designing an event like this at this stage of development. I'll just go ahead and guess that the NPC spawns may have had a bug that doesn't show up so well in front of a testing audience who aren't all obsessed with statistical analysis (which is just as well!)

Captain's Quarters are traditionally located in the immediate area of the bridge... typically adjacent or immediately above/below. This annoys me, as well.
ALSO! I did serve in the Navy with a number of years on Frigates. The berths/bunks and rooms appear reasonable and it is common for heads to be in ... inconvenient places, like afterthoughts! So overall, yes... and officer country tends to be on a different deck or in a different location on the ship from enlisted berths.
