I believe this song is about Elvis and his influence in Music. I've always enjoyed it. Thanks y'all ❤
This is definitely about Elvis.
"Love Me Tender leaves then cryin' in the aisles" - "then he was gone in a flash".
A Canadian singing the southern blues gotta love it.
I think the song is supposed to make you feel some kind of way. It's about Elvis, and his music most definitely made everybody feel some kind of way. That is what makes it such an excellent tribute. Beautifully performed and sang.
A tribute song for Elvis. Love it ❤
Gentlemen this song title is in reference to the elvis paintings that most collectors bought from roadside vendors. They are usually painted on black velvet to bring out the concert feel of an auditorium and the bright costumes he wore. Fans who love him and these works buy quite a lot of them.
Exactly! And many people have made fun of black velvet Elvis paintings. I think that this song points out - black velvet -yes, but there is undeniable sexiness, heat, something in Elvis that gripped a generation and many people after. It's taking back that black velvet...
@@SMtWalkerS I had an aunt, who was ironically buried today, that had several of these paintings. If she saw a store or roadside vendor she had to pull over to see if there was a painting she didn't have. It was a religion to her & many like her. So yes, when they black velvet if you please, they only want elvis, nothing but elvis.
@@michellejones-zu1kq I'm sorry about your auntie. Yes, the black velvet painting thing is fascinating. My Texas cousins all have at least one, and the Elvis postage stamps are framed and enshrined. I must admit, I love Elvis, too, mostly from the old movies. "Blue Hawaii" and "GI Blues" and such.
@@SMtWalkerS thank you. I love elvis too. Girl happy, clambake, and kid galahad are my favorites. I got lucky song from kid galahad is perfect. Girl happy and wolf call songs from Girl happy. Yep I love him too. Sorry got off on tangent.
@@michellejones-zu1kq ❤❤❤❤
One of the most sultry, sexy tunes, ever.............
Equal parts sexy and menacing
I'm going to have to disagree. "Of all time" is quite a stretch, no disrespect to the song! The song is ok.
I love this track, but I think you may want to listen to a few more artists before making such a big claim. It’s all subjective, so technically, you’re right.
😎✌🏼🇺🇸
@@Chiari_Queen_T it's not a "disrespect to the song." It's a "disrespect" to the listener's opinion. What YOU might think is the best song "of all time" (which the OP did NOT put in their comment) might seem to be a stinker to someone else. Let people think what they want and get off of Twitter and Facebook.
@@randyhochstein8455 the OP wrote, "....one of the..." not "...THE MOST..." What is wrong with everyone that they have to shoot down someone's opinion??? It's just an opinion, not a rule.😆
Dripping with Southern soul and blues.
Good Canadian girl.
The only thing better than listening to Alannah sing this song is to watch the official music video to watch her perform it and her incredible beauty. I had such a crush back in the day.
Came here to say she looked so cool in her leather chaps.
She left a wake wherever she went.
You and me both bro...sexiest female of the 80's, an absolute princess. X
I’ve always liked this song. She has a great voice. I like female singers to have a stronger, grittier sound to their voice. And the music…... Whew! It has a sensual, bluesy rhythm that is very nice. Can definitely hear some Stevie Ray Vaughan in that guitar. Good choice.
I have always thought that this song is one of the sexiest ever written and recorded, and she carries in her voice.
The blues riff is almost hypnotic in its quality.
The feel of her voice reminds me of a singer in a darkish Smokey night club with a sultry feel.
As a woman I can say she has one of the sexiest voices I've ever heard. Love this song.❤
if you get the chance her video to this song is just... WOW. She was so beautiful. 🥰
Oooooh, I was so smitten with Alanna Miles …that smokey & sultry voice , her raven black hair & striking looks…I was ready to drive to Canada!
The song mimics Elvis Presley. He was sexy, sensual, his music was bluesy rock and roll. Her vocal and the instrumental construction of the song convey the essence of Elvis.
This is a Grammy award winning song as well.
She is the definition of sultry.
~ She has an awesome voice!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yep. About Elvis. Because they sold black velvet pictures of Elvis and they sold like crazy! His voice was also black velvet. Smooth and Nice
Elvis was born in Mississippi and lived in a black community. Needless to say he was influenced by black music. When he was first staring out, and people were first hearing him on the radio some people thought he was black.
My head was bobbing too. Humans are funny. And yes, this song is about Elvis.
A tribute to Elvis who was often painted on Black Velvet during the 50's and 60's. His childhood, and poor Mississippi beginnings. She is very beautiful and sexy. I love it. Thanks.
I think every woman house had 1 in the 70s
When Elvis first started out on radio (not seen on TV yet), some people thought he was black.
**fun fact**
Black Velvet is also a brand of Canadian rye whiskey 😎
My late mother's favorite
You really can feel the heat from this song. Great imagery for sure! (My family is from around Tupelo!)
Love that song!
love the bassline on the track and the drums
I’ve been listening to this song since I was a teen….. and never heard/noticed the whispering in the beginning 😆
I always loved this song. Some other great 1 hit songs are Free-All right now, Mountain-Mississippi Queen, Ram Jam-Black Betty, Sweet-Ballroom Blitz, Head East-Never been any reason.
Memories of transferring to our local police station to work in 1989. The happiest years of my life working with 30 guys who were like brothers to me. They took care of my son and myself when my relationship broke down, and they checked our doors and windows every night and made sure that we were safe. I still miss those wonderful guys to this day, so respectful, funny and very entertaining. Every day was a fun day, and I looked forward to going to work each day. This is what I think of hearing this song, very happy memories!!!
Saw her in 1990 when she opened for Robert Plant.
Of course it's sexy...it has the beat, the heat, the sultry female vocals, the sultry guitar/baseline and it's about Elvis!
If you enjoyed this, you should really watch the official video for this. It adds to the atmosphere.
Y'all need to watch the official video!
The sultry and sexy vocals of Alannah, soooo good. I've had this on my Playlist since it came out.
Love Elvis anyway, and the vocal with guitar in this song is perfection to me. Happy you did this. 🔥👍🏽🥳
Edit: talking rasp, Nancy Wilson leads vocals in Heart's These Dreams and she recorded when having a cold and they left it in cuz they liked the raspy sound from being ill. 😂
If you were around in the days Elvis was king you would know immediately this song was about him and those Velvet Elvis paintings. 😎
Yes Canadian talent! 🇨🇦
Nick is feeling "some type a way". Nice. 😋
This song is SOOO fucking good!!
Great song back in the day 😎
Video will show you how passionate and beautiful she is…”In a flash he was gone, what could you do?”
Love this song and anything honoring Elvis
Me too ❤
The song is a tribute to Elvis Presley.
Black velvet refers to Elvis. He used to be on these velvet pictures sold in the 1970's.
Velvet wall posters were popular in the 70s. They were sort of 3D. This is about one such poster of Elvis.
Definitely a delta blues feel. In Canada, Black Velvet is a big selling Rye Whiskey, just sayin'.
It was fire then, and it's still fire now!
I know you’re gonna love her and this song! She’s very sexy and sultry. She opened for Robert Plant when I saw him back in the 90s. Best concert ever!
There is a live video which I know you’d enjoy! ✌️❤️
Black velvet, smooth
The version i heard was 1990 by Robin Lee. But yes it is about Elvis and his influence on music
So glad you did this one. The video for this actually emphasizes the lyrics. Alannah's voice is excellent
Huge song here in Canada....
Tune!! You totally got it Nick. The song evokes a heat haze shimmering in the distance and the film clip has that sultry Southern feel to it as well. I think we all wanted to be Alannah for a minute back in the day - her voice, her style. Thanks for bringing this great song to us.
this whole album is killer!
😂I'm an old. So this takes me back to 1989. Got my walking papers from high school! Graduated that year. And all the parties that followed 😂
What a voice/song!!!
That entire album was really great tbh!
Every line in the song is a reference to Elvis.
Good song to do! She has a nice voice. Need to see video too.
This song is my karaoke go to! ❤❤ ...and Velvet is soft and way to hot to wear. Great for drapes, capes, and paintings! 😂
If you get a chance, watch the official video. I think it really enhances the music.
love is, still got this thing, kick start my heart
Great song!
That's a fretless bass - played very well, btw.
Just realized where they got the music for "hell march" in the game Command & Conquer.
The follow up song, Love Is is also a banger, but more up tempo. Love the flanged bass... (Bass player here!)
My 7th Grade Gym Teacher, who was also in a Blue Blockers sunglass commercial, lyp synced this during the teacher lip sync competition in middle school. She won. All the middle school boys had a crush on her. Fun memories.

Thanks for the post. Fun story for sure and thanks for sharing, but the lede got buried with the BluBlockers. 😂 Man, is that a memory from the past or what? For those that may not be aware, BluBlockers were sunglasses and a participant in what companies/stores started calling "As Seen On TV" products in America. There was a time in the mid-to-late 1980s where it was nearly impossible to watch a few hours of TV and avoid a BluBlockers commercial (what would be quite similar on today's American TV when it comes to car insurance commercials). Regardless, the BluBlockers ads, as the poster above mentioned, would feature very kitschy "people on the street" interviews, where the people would give on-camera testimonials as to how the BluBockers were the greatest invention since fire and the telephone. 😂 The first link above may be the most well-known BluBlockers commercial of all time that features a "hip hopper" that goes by the name of "Geek" that uses his camera time, while stylishly wearing a sombrero with his BluBlockers, to rap about how much better his life has become due to his new sunglasses. 😂 This is no lie or exaggeration, but I think the reason why I put together this reply when I went down "memory lane" on RUclips was to find that there is an actual BluBlockers channel. That is the second link above. Taking a quick review at that, I rushed to Google to do a quick search and I found that....wait for it...BluBlockers is still very much in business! 🎉 So if you want to relive the "glory days" of the 1980s or early 1990s, be sure to search BluBlockers, go on their website, and get a pair (or 3) today. Who says that American and global capitalism is dead? We've got BluBlockers surviving all kinds of economic strife since the 1980s and thriving in its FIFTH decade! 😂 As a final note, I want to put it in writing that if the guys now get a BluBlockers sponsorship on the channel, then the above poster and I are each entitled to at least 10% of the revenue from the sponsorship or a free pair of BluBlockers (whatever is worth more). 😎 😂
NOW you're back on track with the one hit bangers! A playlist song for sure!
Hey guys. Two more top-notch Canadian female singers to do are Sass Jordan (High Road Easy official video), Amanda Marshall (Let It Rain official video). These ladies are excellent! 🇨🇦
Sultry gentlemen brilliant
Gotta be on of the sexiest tunes ever!
WOOOOHOOO!!! GREAT TUNE!! I hope you-guys enjoyed it!! Dang it - I keep missing when things come-out!! THANKS for these BANGERS, GUYS!!! I always loved the sound of this tune! HUGS!
Black velvet, lol. I could be totally wrong, (it was a long time ago) but I think I remember hearing that "Black Velvet" is referring to those paintings they would sell on the side of the road or under tents in parking lots. A LOT of them were sparkly paintings of Elvis with black velvet as the canvas. It was just cheap art.
Job well done. Thank you.
The first time that I heard this song, back when it came out, I immediately thought of Elvis Presley. You can find a lot of portraits of Elvis painted on black velvet. Of course you would imagine feeling the hot sultry heat of the summer. You're in the deep south sweetie. I think the word that you are looking for to describe her voice and the feel of this Southern Blues beat is "Sultry".
If you guys like raspy voices check out another Canadian woman by the name of Darby Mills from the band called The Headpins! They had several fantastic songs!
more from her, "Lover of Mine" and "Still got this thing"
I think, I remember reading somewhere that Elvis likes Black Velvet whiskey
She sings the same way Elvis would if he was a female, in this song, if you think about it.
And great lp.
There is also a whiskey as an FYI that is called black velvet just for y’all that don’t know that😮
Early 90's goodness, this era was gold
Played this song hundreds of times in cover bands. It was popular for a reason. Had some sexy female singers in my bands and it always went over well.
Great choice! Haven't heard it in years.... Someone sang it last week at Karaoke!
This song holds up over the years! When I hear it now all I can think is that scene in the Jim Gaffigan show. (Worth a look up). 😂
you should also check out Still got this thing for you from Alannah...she is an awesome singer!
Next up for you Gents continuing the Kick A$$ Canadian Female Bluesy Ballsy Band Leaders has to be "Pissin Down" from Sass Jordan, who played Janis Joplin on Stage in NYC.
First time I heard this I was a 19 yr old Navy boot camp grad in an Orlando strip club in 1990. Took on a totally different meaning at the time.
Gentlemen you gotta help me out here
Listen to the lyric that starts "Mama's dancing with...."
I contened that the lyric says "Mama's dancing with baby E on her shoulder "
Baby E being Elvis as everyone in his circle called him E
But everywhere i look the lyric just says "dancing with baby on her shoulder"
Listen close for the break between baby and E
Let me know what you think
Love your channel keep up the rockin work!
"Dobie Gray' in that 502 smile, "Drift Away" please don't wait - a long while. The View will listen, perhaps if I just say please. Drift Away if you please..
BTW I approve of Black Velvet
❤ I remember when this song was popular on the radio up here in Canada. Im still watching my favorite reaction on You tube, your Year of the Cat. I hope you guys do a follow up with a live performance and Ryan can check out all the different instruments. The Whistle Grey Test is awesome!
I think you’d like Ace - How Long
Black velvet was a reference to paintings of Elvis back in the day
Try Iron Butterfly “In-a-Gadda-Di-Vida”!! Saw them in ‘78! Awesome time!🤘🔥
Looking forward to this. Great song!
The vocal is very good.
I heard this song a lot because it’s on my personal playlist, for me it’s a vibe that I can relax to. In fact, there is still a lot of work, a lot of good music that you guys will have to react to. 😂
Watch the video it gets a lot warmer
It's about interracial love. Elvis was a Melungeon - a third Black, a third Jewish and a third Native American.
I heard about that too
❤❤ So glad this one made your marathon! Playlist staple 😊
Watch the Video.
You'll be even more impressed.
