Little did she know, the song would became an international smash hit, a film-soundtrack favorite, and would be repurposed by new artists and the internet for the next 20 years . VICE meets Vanessa Carlton, "White Chicks" actor Terry Crews, and others responsible for making the song the indelible hit, still widely adored today.

She’s right though. That one song did squash her career significantly even though it’s the thing that gave her the career. It’s a double edged sword. That Single was so successful radio wouldn’t play anything else off of that album when they tried to release it because they were still playing “a thousand miles” and even by the time her second record came out they still wouldn’t play the singles off of that because that’s the first single from the first record was still getting high rotation. The song was released in '01 but White Chicks came out a few years later. It was perfect timing too, especially by early aughts media standards. Things just didn't pop up and disappear so fast back then. But having that 3 year or so gap between the two really helped cement that song into memory. Just as it was fading out of "new music" territory, it's thrust right back in.
