    I know this is an old video but I gotta say THANK YOU. This is the most real life honest video I have seen on RUclips for quite some time. I had the exact same thing happen to me with my Bersa but no one talks about it....except for you ;) Sadly, it seems most gun channels simply make commercials for the gun makers.You just earned yourself a new Patreon member.

      @@MattWaller04 the recoil springs in these things are way too light. The solution to the thunder 380 is to buy walther pp wolff 15-18lb spring and cut one coil off the spring. Also the ammo he is using is also known to be bad to use in bersa. Almost everything else works, besides a current manufacturer freedom munitions. They are also picky with some hollow point brands but critical defense seems to be the #1 go to in any .380.

    I just watched the second video made after this one. I had some similar problems with my Bersa CC pistol. It turned out to be wear in the plastic followers inside the magazines. The top of that magazine follower holds the barrel open. After a little while the surface of that plastic follower would get worn off. I sent a couple of emails to Bersa customer service at the time. They sent me metal followers for the magazines to use instead of the plastic followers. It worked a lot better. That's been a few years now and about the time this video was made. I have actually had to buy a new magazine since for the same follower wear issue. I love the ergonomics of the pistol. I sure wish it was more reliable. Thanks for your videos Buffalo.

    I bought my first Bersa 380 back in 2005 and I noticed that the mags were a chore to load. The springs in the Bersa mags are pretty stout. I actually bought a loader to save my hands when trying to get through a 100 round box of ammo. When I used third party mags I had some feed fails but I believe that is due to the spring being too weak. I just bought a new Bersa 380 and it seems a lot easier to load the mags. I know Bersa does make improvements on their weapons over the years and I wonder if that is one of them. Still I would stay with Bersa mags instead of any third party mag.

  • @Subtlenimbus

    The light strikes and feed problems might have been the result of a single problem. If the bad feeds looked like the thumb-nail for the vid, then the rims could have had trouble getting under a tight extractor. This problem can also keep the slide slightly out of battery, by even half a millimeter, which can prevent the hammer from fully impacting the firing pin. Second strike will then work, because the first pushes the slide fully forward. Just an idea.

    I have seen the problems, you described and demonstrated, on numerous Bersa .380 pistols over the years. The two easiest to repair, by Bersa, seems to be replacing weak springs and doing a bit of polishing on otherwise rather rough surfaces. At least two gun dealers I know flat refuse to carry Bersa products in their stores because when they DID carry them, while selling very well indeed, they ended up coming back due to jams, weak to nearly nonexistent firing pin strikes, and bad or poorly made magazines. To be fair, not EVERY Bersa I've had the occasion to fire (I've never owned one) malfunctioned. Some ran like Swiss watches, after being cleaned, new out of their boxes. I think that if the folks at Bersa took just a little more time with fit and finish AND used better springs and magazines in their guns Bersa pistols could dominate the small, automatic, concealed carry pistol market. But until those things are addressed I don't see it happening. Excellent video as usual!

    I had a Bersa Thunder Plus for a short time. I'm not sure if I was ever able to cycle through all 15+1 rounds without some issue coming up. I went through failure to fire, failure to feed, and failure to eject issues regularly. The failure to fire issues seemed very random and occurred regardless of the ammo manufacturer. The fail to feed and fail to eject issues though seemed to happen pretty consistently after a certain number of shots fired. This happened whether using the magazines that came with the gun or using a couple of different aftermarket magazines. I considered sending it in for warranty repair but decided instead to bring it back to the store I purchased it from and put it up for sale on consignment. It would then be the store's problem to deal with between them and whoever bought it. From what I can tell, not everyone who buys these guns seems to have these issues. That, or they are having issues and are too embarrassed to admit it. These are very cheap guns for a reason...poor quality.

    I'm not really into small cc
    pistols but I can see Bersa giving the gun a new spring and firing pin. This is a good video that the gun wasn't your major problem causing poor firing. Stock parts don't always have the highest quality standards and gun parts do need replacing from wear. Plus it helps when magazines are assembled with springs in the right position to. For Bersa with the exception for grips I don't see major after market sellers. Eagle Imports Bersa Distributer sells manufactured parts.

And I can’t figure out why that was happening. I’ve reloaded thousands upon thousands of rounds for other calibers and never had that problem ever. But i can’t quite crack this one. I have the Bersa Thunder 380 Plus. I can run ball ammo through it all day long. It will not run JHP consistently & I've tried different ammo, diferen't magazines. When I contacted Bersa they told me to contact a Bersa authorized Gunsmith, which I did. He told me they're not designed to run JHP, but he could take a look at it. If it'll run FMJ which is what it's designed for. It's a 380, minimum caliber for ccw & doesn't have enough velocity to effectively expand a hollow point. As a retired LEO if that's what your going to carry, use FMJ.

It was fail to feed about every second shot and that was heartbreaking it was a wonderful feeling gun and so well balanced. I used some fairly hot +P self defense loads and it did better but that is expensive as all get out. I am sure cheaper +p would have similar results.

    Any model or manufacturer might turn out the occasional "clunker", but from what I've seen, most (not all) problems are the fault of the magazine, it's lips, spring, etc. or being finicky with ammo. Sometimes when reassembled the slide spring is put in backwards over the barrel...the smaller tighter end faces the gun when that spring is put back on properly....an easy mistake to make.

      Are you using the factory magazines or aftermarket magazines. My understanding was that the Bersa Thunder works reliably with the factory magazines but not so much with the promags. Also what condition are the magazine springs in? Could the firing pin be broken a little bit at the tip? That could be the culprit behind a light primer strike couldn't it? Like your video BTW. I'm subscribing now...

    • @buffalosoutdoors
      @buffalosoutdoors  7 лет назад +1

      Cowboy357 Bob Both mags are from Bersa. One that came with the pistol and the other was bought from Bersa, both give the same result. Besides, light primer strikes don't usually point to magazine issues. I know it's tough for some to understand but I shoot so many guns that now and then I am bound to get a bad one and I will show them on video when it happens as I believe it is important. Since the pistol is under warranty the right thing to do here is to give Bersa a chance to fix their screw up. If it comes back with the same issues my next video won't be anywhere near as positive and upbeat as this one.

    Thank you - I have a Bersa Thunder 380 and I did not buy the recommended range ammo (Remington UMC or Magpul). Instead I had bought Sellier and Bellot, which consistently stove pipes. I look forward to my next range session because that’s when I’ll test out the manufacture recommended target ammunition. I already use a manufacturer recommended defensive ammo: Critical Defense.

      Man there shouldn't be a recommendation for range ammo.
      I can see a mfg recommendation for hollowpoints and defense ammo because alot of them are weird shaped.
      But a gun ought to run any brand of ball fmj ammo made. If it's within spec it should run it

    I owned 4 of their 380's & never had 1 failure to fire. I trust them as I give my daughter 1asher personal gun. I have a Sig 238 SAS & a sold my Sig 230 as it was heavier to carry. I like this gun better dollar for dollar. I am SORRY you had a bad experience as I been a gun smith for over 30's yrs. & this is the 1st negative I ever heard.

    I had similar bad luck with mine.
    Last round hold open would only work with factory mags that had the metal followers.
    Lots of jams, fte's and ftf's with all types of ammo, especially hollow points.
    The slide metal was so soft, the underside was actually being eaten and worn away by the hammer every time it cycled, and the slot for the slide catch wore down and the sharp edge became rounded off, making it nearly impossible to lock the slide back.
    Traded it for a Taurus 85 and never looked back.

    I bought a Bersa 380. It was bad from factory. There was a metal bur that kept the rounds from feeding. They would catch and get dented or the bullet would get pushed into the case. I was able to trade it for the Bersa Thunder Combat 380. This gun has worked flawlessly after hundreds of rounds.

    I wanted to try a Bersa Thunder cc .380 a month ago as I was looking over the pocket pistols. I highly recommend anyone to try to get all makes in your hands to see how it feels and has the type of controls that work for you. I ended up with a Glock 42 in .380 ACP. It's the first Glock I have owned and so far it has worked perfectly. The trigger pull they say is supposed to be around 5 1/2lbs. but mine is closer to 7lbs. But surprisingly it and me get along well and its a good little shooter, even groups fine at 25yds.,,I thought that was great for such a small pistol. I sold my Ruger SR9c to purchase a smaller carry gun and truthfully the 42 feels not bad at all in my hand even compared to the bigger Ruger SR9c. Now most of the pocket guns as I call them are super small pistols and didn't "feel" right at all, or they were actually too light imo. The Ruger LCP 2 while improved still was to small for me and to light. It's a 10oz. gun where my 42 is almost 14oz unloaded and an over 3" barrel and larger dimensions. I really wanted to find a Bersa Combat series to compare but none to be found as they are heavier yet, but I am happy with my purchase. I got lucky and saved a bit as it was a trade in, but still new and never fired. I looked into the .380 acp cartridge a lot to before purchase and decided that I would rather have a super light gun that is soft shooting and not snappy as some of the 9's of this weight can be. "I've fired some J Frames with 38+p and the Airweight was snappy also" I'm using Hornaday Critical Defense 90gr rounds and they actually fare very well on LuckyGunner gel tests and fall into the FBI 12-16" of penetration through denim and then the block with full and equal expansion with 5 shots...good enough for me. I don't mind recoil at all and own some heavy hitting rifles for hunting, but I like a handgun that is quick to stay on target,,just what I like is all. I carry it as my back up gun while on the road, or on my boat and by itself everywhere else. MY Ruger GP100 SS 6" .357 Mag is never out of reach most times. Yeah I love revolvers to, I just couldn't find a J frame that I liked to shoot in DA very well. The Ruger SP101 .357 match champion was calling my name, but to big for the application for me...but I still want one...:)

    I have owned a Thunder 380 CC, two Thunder 380s, and a Thunder 380 Plus. The CC is the only one that gave me a few break in issues, but has since been perfect. I'll have to pay more attention to the primer strikes to see if they're different in the 380 CC.

    I bought an older Bersa Thunder 380 some time ago,, all stainless steel (including the frame).. haven't had a single problem until I bought a Pro-Mag magazine. First I had failure to feed on the second or third round, over and over. I filed the lips where the bullet leaves the mag and that fixed it. Then it failed to feed the last round, every time. The only difference between the Bersa mag and the Pro-Mag mag is the bersa has a steel follower, and the Pro-Mag has a plastic follower. I tried smoothing out the plastic follower and even dumped some oil on it. It still fails to feed last round, every ammo brand and type. It just takes a little tap to get it into battery. But that is annoying. Next time I will spring for the extra $12 and get the Bersa brand mag.

    Sure nice to see your balanced approach to the problem and that you give it a second chance before going too critical on it. FWIW I have never had a problem with mine.The recoil spring has a skinny end and a wide end. Skinny end goes on the barrel first and holds it in place. If you put it on the other way around the slide might not always cycle the whole way leading to FTF. I am guessing the light primer strikes might be a gummed up filing pin.

      @buffalosoutdoors  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks, I want them to have a chance to look at it and fix it. If it comes back with the same issues I will be more critical for sure. A lot more critical. This is my first time dealing with their customer service. The guy I chatted with was friendly and helpful so I have high hopes. The recoil spring is on correctly and the gun was as clean as a whistle. This problem didn't just arise that day when I made the video it was something I'd been fighting with for a few weeks.

    Get better springs and fiocchi ammo is know to be one of the few ammo brands to not rely on in bersa. Also pmags give issues very rarely. Mecgar mags can be had for like $5-10 more than pmags plus you get 8rd instead of 7.

    I've had A Bersa .380 for about 20 years and I have never had a single issue with feeding, firing or any malfunction to speak of. Maybe it is just a spring or firing pin problem. Be interesting to see if they say what they did to fix it. Funny you said the remington fired better, in rifle ammo I find they have a harder to strike primer. I Have some core-lok 30-06 that my BAR won't fire one out of 5 times but it runs flawless on milsurp and hornaday. Usually if I run them back thru then they fire fine.

    • @buffalosoutdoors

    I think you have a lemon. I have the regular Bersa Thunder and it's been super reliable. It's also cheap to buy and easy to take down. The only negative is that I also have a Ruger LC9s, and the LC9s is a tad smaller and pocket carry is my preferred method of carry. If Bersa had made their pistol the same size as the Walther PPK, they would have had a winner.

    I've found that with the two 380 ACP pistols, one Astra Constable II, the other a Bersa Series 95, both would not feed with the aluminum cased ammunition. Brass, however, would feed without any problems. I like the 380, but I'd like to find one in a full sized 1911, or the Glock 25, (not imported to the US, reportedly the size of thr Glock 19). That would be nice.

  • @Wireman134

    Magazine disconnect is the issue with firing pin. Feed ramp has obstructions on sides. Keep oil away from firing pin hole.

  • @SuperSaltydog77
    @SuperSaltydog77 4 года назад

    Have you tried removing the firing pin from the slide and clean out the firing pin channel. Some ammo is dirtier than others causing powder residue to build up in the firing pin channel causing the pin to move slow. Remove the extractor, remove the safety/decocker lever and pull out the firing pin giving you access to the channel. You can use a small bore brush with solvent to clean it.
