- Thor: Love and Thunder is almost here and the Rewatch Crew revisits the entire Thor series. We started with the first MCU Thor film, Thor (2011) and now we cover Thor: The Dark World. It is widely regarded as the worst MCU film. Do you agree? Will the crew agree? Kristian Harloff, Coy Jandreau and Winston A. Marshall give their thoughts.

Fun fact; in the scene when Jane faints as they’re escaping Asgard; Loki’s line “Oh dear, is she dead?” was an improv from Tom Hiddleston; as he didn’t realize that Natalie Portman was so checked at that point in the production that she lacked the will to even stand anymore.
Totally
I'm a big fan of Avengers earth Mightiest Heroes the series and I was first introduce to the Dark Elf's during the series so I thought it was cool to finally see them in live action.
True that
The score by Brian Tyler for this film is one of the best MCU scores! The first film has an amazing score by Patrick Doyle, and even though it's a different theme they used for this film man it's so powerful
Loved the score for Dark World, very underrated
It was!
Yeah, it's not That bad or horrible, but it sure is near the bottom of my list. The worst part is that it's boring and I don't know what is it about this movie that makes it so forgettable. I was forgetting it while I was rewatching it...
Probably because the story was generic and most of the characters weren't developed that well
Fair
Love these rewatches. Kristian, I usually watch your channel on here but when I got to Spotify to listen to Rogan I always hit the “mark as played” on your episodes if I already watch them on here. Do you get credit for that or is it only if I download the episode? Just something I was curious about cause I like to help your channel where I can.
Downloading the episode helps tremendously!
I didnt hate the movie. I thought it was decent.
Same
This was actually the movie that got me big into the MCU and how i found you guys back on the day
That is awesome
I've always said that this isn't a bad movie, it's just a bad Thor movie. He doesn't really change much, doesn't gain any new powers, it's really just stuff he went through.
But there's so much good Loki stuff in here, I think this is my favorite of his outings. The ending gave me such chills, and I wish it wasn't played off largely as a joke in Ragnarok.
This really was Loki's movie. Almost everything with him shines in this one
Well said
8:20
Isn’t Chris Evans in the after credit scene in Antman also?
When Falcon says “I know a guy”
Hmmm
Happy Canada Day to my fellow SEN’ers of the North 🇨🇦
Thanks Scott
I don’t hate it either. It’s better than most superhero films. Meh for the MCU but decent overall.
Final fight is fun. Loki is good. Hemsworth does his best. Idris Elba rocks.
He does!
Aldrech Killian from Iron Man 3 wasn't great but he wasn't bad either......
1. That is probably a common way i've seen people go bitter and become actually bad in real life
2. It play along with my 1st point that he didn't decided to go after Tony, he was a nerdy guy who had "the" moment on the rooftop and just began to improve himself, motivated out of hatred till Tony threatened Mandarin.....
I find that realistic and I believe people took that villain on the face value and took him as a villain who is motivated by something mean done by the hero like Electro in TASM 2
Good call
Totally agree. Killian is one of the better villains.
I like this movie, and I’ve liked it every time I’ve watched it - I thought the 3rd act fight with the floating portals was really well orchestrated, the relationship and banter between Thor and Loki was well handled and really funny, and the death of Freya/Frigga was really sad (and she was a badass before that).
The only real complaints I have is that the villain was “eh”, yet another instance of Loki “dying” yet not dying, and Jane didn’t get much to do.
Thank you for sharing!
New Asgard is The town that Odin protects in the Thor prologue against the frost giants.
“Tønsberg is a village in Norway that housed the Tesseract for several centuries. Following the Destruction of Asgard and the Snap, it was repopulated by the surviving Asgardians who, in homage to Asgard, renamed it New Asgard.”
Nice
Suggestion: A “View Askewniverse” rewatch series leading up to Clerks III, starting with Clerks and special guest Kevin Smith!!
Huh? Whadda ya think?
A lot of people say that Loki is the best part of this movie and while I agree, it is also my biggest problem with this movie. This movie is called THOR : The Dark World and Thor is completely overshadowed in his own movie by Loki. You can tell the only reason he has been given a bigger role was because The Avengers made him more popular.
Also, Thor is a static character and doesn’t go through any major personal growth in this film compared to Loki. When Thor is the least interesting character in a Thor movie, you have a major problem. It’s because of this movie that Chris Hemsworth almost left the franchise because he admitted it made Thor boring. Thankfully, Thor : Ragnarok came along. 🤩
Thank you very much gentlemen!!! Always appreciate your thoughts and perspective. Have a great holiday weekend guys!!! 🙂👍
Thank you
We know that Patty Jenkins was originally going to direct this movie, but I think a lot of people don't know that Matthew Vaughn was originally directing the first Thor, alongside Jon Favreau with Iron Man and Edgar Wright with Ant-Man, but he was released from his holding deal with Marvel after the first Iron Man's opening weekend....
Interesting!
These rewatches are the best. I always watch the movie before I watch your rewatches! Thanks for all the hard work you do!
So far I'm enjoying athletic greens. Now I can get shredded like kristian!
Haha nice
A lot of people hate this movie, but I never did , I think it's fine
Ya I don't hate it.
I personally like Infinity War more than Endgame, by an okay margin.
It’s a better film IMO, although Endgame has some great moments.
Lots of peeps say that!
Love these rewatches. Great work you guys!!
Glad you like them! Thank you!
Captain America also made cameos in both the post-credit scenes of Ant-Man and Captain Marvel....
Nice
Coming back to this. It’s interesting now seeing this is where Marcus and McFeely got started
Well they wrote the first Captain America
They have been involved for a bit!
I always interpreted The Scarlet Witch's reality warping power as taking a lot of effort to generate, and this is the reason she only uses it sparsely.
I think this film is okay - The villain is bland, and the humour at the end is detrimental due to it happening during the final battle. With the intern smashing Dark Elves with a car due to gravitational anomalies, and kissing Darcy while popping up in front of Jane and Eric due to space portal anomalies, it takes away from the serious stakes for a serious situation, and turns everything into a comedic cartoon. It's like putting comedy in the first film, when The Destroyer is causing destruction, or Thor is fighting with Loki. Completely misplaced, unfortunately.
Everything else is great though, I think.
Thor II is an average sequel. However, I think this one has the best look and cinematography of the solo Thor adventures. It had the look and feel of a gritty LOTR film or GOT episode. Asgard looked its best here.
I couldn't agree more, I love the whole "viking" look of it all, as well as the first film, feeling a sense of "epicness" and "pathos", whereas one of my few gripes with Ragnarok is that when they're on Asgard, it look like "green-screen world", as well as obviously looking like a set....
@@jarednavarrete1740 I felt the 1st movie looked cool, but never felt like a populated planet. Lots of the crowd scenes were like throne room scenes. TDW showed just a bit more of the civilian life and it seemed a little more life like. Ragnarok's Asgard looked just okay. But its a different style. Love the movie itself though.
It looked great
I've always been puzzled by the hate for Thor: The Dark World. It's one of those movies no one really goes into detail as to why they feel it's so terrible. It's not one of the best of the MCU, but it's pretty solid for the most part.
I dig it
TV or not I'm a huge Alan Taylor fan, Sopranos, Lost, Got, Boardwalk, Deadwood... he was apart of changing TV to a more cinematic experience.
For sure
I read somewhere that the Aether was supposed to be its own thing, another generic mcguffin, but they decided to make it an Infinity Stone in post-production so it can matter in the grand scheme of things.
Because of this, they had to go and change the color of the Power Stone in Guardians of the Galaxy, which was originally red, to purple....
Interesting
The first two Thor movies were a little stuffy. The next two Thor movies brought some "silly"/"fun" to the character.
Perhaps a Thor 5 can balance the two of these ideas. Bring on Cosmic King Thor.
Nice
Is cap not in the after credit scene for ant-man which was just a clip from civil war
Could be
Another lights out cameo from Richard. Always appreciated
Hahaha
Hoping we get a post credits scene of Beta Ray Bill in love & thunder
:0
Gave this a rewatch for myself in preparation for this video! Definitely not as bad as I’ve been convinced into remembering 😂. Some truly great moments!
Glad it was helpful!
Cool watch. Wasn't my favorite of Thir movie but I agree wasn't that bad of a movie. Not like it's The Neverending Story 2
Fair
This movie should've been the first Rotten tomato the MCU should've gotten. I have no idea what the critcs saw in this. Its just a bad film all the way through. With the Loki scenes being the only good thing. Its a terrible film.
:0
It’s an average MCU film but still better than most of the Snyderverse DC movies 😀
Facts
:0
Would it count that Downey was in far from home too? May of been a small thing but he was showing off mysterios/Becks illusion tech and called it BARF
That's all just archive footage, RDJ didn't shoot anything new for that....
True
Got to do my own rewatch to see if I've softened up my opinion of this movie.
I do know Kurse managed to something Thanos couldn't even do by deflecting Mjolnir.
Random question: How many of Thor's supporting cast has been fridged?
Hmmmm
As far as my memory goes, Paty Jenkins wanted to make a love triangle movie and people above Fiege(in the Marvel Studios, not Disney)weren't ready for female villain in ironman 3 and a love triangle directed by a female director....and refused such ideas
Hmmm
Just rewatched it. I truly believe this is the best Thor film. Not the best film of Thor franchise, not even the second, but as a Thor film this is by far the best one. The world construction of Asgard , the family drama, the tone all of these aspects were amazing. It reminds me so much of Masters of the Universe, with he mix of technology and fantasy.
Where I see the biggest problem is that it didn’t explain very well the reasons behind the villain, and this make the character shallow and uninteresting. Why did he actually wanted to bring darkness so bad? Maybe a scene where they show their world being destructed bu light or something like that would have gone a long way making us connect to him and feeling some empathy.
The third act was the weakest, including the final battle.
Glad you dug it!!
I know I am in the minority of Doctor Who fans but I hated Ecclestein's version of the Doctor. It's a shame because the character is so much fun in the comics like a magical Joker but the problem is they can't do that because that would be to similar to Loki and the writers are too lazy to come up with anything else.
I am not that familiar with it.
Don't forget the Fantastic Four movies when counting Chris Evans in Marvel films. But then again that's if you want to count Chris Evans instead of Steve Rogers.
Just MCU
I don't know about anyone else but I thought the Loki was easily the best part of the movie.
Real good
Overall this movie is ok, but I think this is the worst marvel movie. The villain is terrible and there is a lot of dumb moments. I wish Patty Jenkins was able to make the version she wanted. I’m sure it would have been better than what we got.
True
In Ultron they talk about Jane too
True
It definitely has its problems, but I like it better than Ragnarok, which is overrated and obnoxious.
:0
Now why would you do this to yourselves and watch this movie again?
Rewatch!
I read somewhere that the hammer and coat rack scene was improved by Chris Hemsworth
Hmmm
It’s a guilty pleasure MCU film for me. I’ve always loved it.
Awesome, thanks Bruce!
@@TheKristianHarloff Thank you too Kristian! 😊
Could you count Evans being in Captain Marvel since he's in the post credit scene? In that case he'd be tied with Downey and Jackson.
Yeah
please do a personal ranking of mcu movies
I think that could be a mega episode of Big Thing
You gotta watch umbrella academy. Think you will enjoy the time traveling
I hear good things
*The dude who breathes fire in Iron Man 3.* Literally the moment where my brain checked out for that movie. Both Thor: The Dark World & Iron Man 3 are 2 of my lowest ranking MCU films. TTDW obviously being the worst for me.
Makes sense
In the past I'd attempted to watch this movie twice. I fell asleep on both occasions. I think Marvel should have been selling it to pharmaceutical companies as a cure for insomnia:)
:0
I really wish the story was better written cause all the convergence stuff is actually really interesting!!
Agreed
Also, Thor TDW rewatch and 2/3 guys don’t remember how the movie ends and whether Malekith dies or not 😝
Couldn't remember if he comes back in other movies
@@TheKristianHarloff Honestly, I wouldn't mind. Personally, I'd like to see an MCU villain last more than 1 movie (Thanos and Loki being notable exceptions and Loki isn't a pure villain, to me).
Sif did survive and it was already announced a while back that she would appear in Love and Thunder a while back wasn’t it? Hoping that mean Beta Ray Bill 👀 - I know by now yall have watched the movie already but I’m so excited!
Enjoy
Kristian forgets he’s part of the reason why everyone thinks this is one of the few “bad” ones. Everyone in Collider had their buttons on the culture when it came to these movies. Word of mouth would spread so fast off these guys opinions. I loved the channel and everyone on it, but I always kept my own opinions. That is why today you see all these reactors with fresh minds loving these “bad” ones
Hahaha, I am part of the reason, hilarious. 1. I wasn't at Collider when this movie came out. 2. I liked this movie and reviewed it positively when it released. So can you explain?
how come it sounds like someone is taking pictures?
Hahahahhaha
I thought the way the MCU originally handled magic was stupid (it's just tech we don't understand), but this movie turned that hate up to 11. Why do people with giant lazer guns need horses and swords just say it's god damn magic
That's a pretty standard initiation for magic into the regular world though (science we don't understand); it's not just an MCU thing and it made sense to approach it that way given how that universe started.
Also cuz they just have horses and swords. All of this is standard fantasy/magic stuff. Odd hill to die on
Word
Coy was curious about a shorter cut. I recommend this fan-cut: ruclips.net/video/-TSNOD0sdRs/видео.html
Nice
I think it has the worst villain in the mcu but it’s deff not the worst overall movie
Fair enough
It would have been cool if Malekith had been trying to “take back what was taken from him” and drop a Hela reference so that he wouldn’t have been so one dimensional and it made more sense when we find out in Ragnarok Asgard wasn’t always noble.
True
Patty Jenkins said she turned it down cause she thought the script was terrible.
Oh yeah?
@@TheKristianHarloff that's what I remember reading. I'd look for and post the link for the article if RUclips wasn't going to flag it as spam
@@TheKristianHarloff 16:42 And there were apparently scenes that fleshed out the dark elves that were cut from the film and replaced with Loki reshoots: presumably at the behest of the so called Marvel Creative Committee
While I appreciate The Russo Bros work especially in the MCU, it's important to highlight the fact that the writers of all 4 of their MCU movies Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely who pre-date the Russos in the MCU are just as much if not arguably more responsible in terms of their overall contributions to the MCU. Both are also producing partners of The Russos in their joint AGBO Production Company and are the writers of The Gray Man & The Electric State movies the Russos have/will be directing. It was also noticeable that they weren't the writers of the Tom Holland 'Cherry' movie that flopped!
This is a good point as well!
Damn liking this more than Guardians 2 is a HOT HOT take
I think Guardians 2 is the farts
Idc what anyone says. I like it! But I like everything marvels done so… call me a fanboy 🤣🤷🏼♂️
Word
Thor got his ass beat by the Cursed worse than he did by the Hulk in Ragnarok.
Plus Warriors 3 weren't in Endgame cuz they were killed by Hela.
For sure
This sits at #16 in my Marvel Cinematic Universe movie ranking.
Hmmm
It's fine.
Nice
Thor The Dark World wouldn’t be the worst MCU for me, but it would be the most forgettable.
Fair
It's not horrible. The villain is just so awful
Dull
I actually love The Dark World. I found it very moody and just what I wanted at the time it was released! Cheers!
Nice!
I don’t like Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 either. It’s basically a joke fest.
Ya
I think this is the worst thing in the MCU, but I don't hate it at all, I think it is just mostly dull and "meh" despite some interesting ideas. It's a testament to the quality of the MCU that this is the lowest point they've ever hit, with I think the only other one hitting this low being Guardians 2....
Fair
I definitely didn't mean to, and I REALLY wanted to love this movie (as a Dr. Who fan I was so in), and I fell asleep during the film twice. Basically soon as Loki "dies" the film just fizzles out. It's why I watched it twice, but to no avail lol. This flick is at the bottom of my list, because it's a really boring movie.
Fair enough
Thank God there are more people that share my opinion of Dark World.
For sure
They forgot that Chris evans appears in the post credit scence of captain marvel
Right!
Love and thunder , blew
Winston particularly on point with his comments early on!
Winston rules!
Another awesome Thor discussion.
Thanks!
You should vote Michael bay to direct a call of duty movie wouldn’t that be cool
Starting to think that this is Michael Bay's account.
Kristian’s wife loves the Thor movies bc... well... Chris Hemsworth... 🤣
Actually not really, I would understand if that was the case, but it isn't on this one!
Malakith, Kycilis from Doctor strange worst villains
Fair
I actually liked Dark World more than the first Thor 🤷🏻♂️
Fair
I actually like this movie. Like Iron Man 2, it's gets way too much undeserved crap.
Ya
This is a typical superhero sequel movie like Iron Man 2 now look at the Winter soldier that raised the level of everything storytelling the world building. This movie did nothing. Loki show made this movie better.
Fair enough!
Was it just me or was black panther super overrated. Sure I understand the culture part but cut that and the story has been told 100 times before. Also tired of the main superhero and the villain having pretty much the same power and Disguise. (Ironman part 1, ant-man 1 (Yellowjacket) , hulk (abomination), Spider-Man(venom), black panther (kill monger) it’s all the same. Why I’m I ranting. Sorry. 😅 lol I actually like all these movies but they are Similar.
I loved it
Dust that cap off boss it looks depressed lol
Haha
My least favourite MCU film. Took 3 sittings to finish this one. Very very boring with tons of exposition. Agreed with Coy that 2nd act is way too slow. Most generic and forgettable villain.
True
Hot take: this movie is better than the first Thor 🤷🏻♂️
DAMMMNNN
I don't rewatch most MCU stuff and this one definitely goes on my list of worst of the worst. Just an all around dumpster fire of a film.
Damnnn
I really like this movie. Don’t get the hate at all.
I like it as well.
@@TheKristianHarloff they did waste the hell out Malekith, I agree with Coy on that. Dude is a force in the comics.
Lol it's a rewatch and no one remembers how it ends 🤣
:0
This movie sucks. My least favorite MCU movie
Captain Marvel and Iron Man 2 are worse than this IMO
Lots of people feel this way.
Thor the Dark world big disappointment wouldn't watch it again
:(
Seeing that Valkyrie is a woman, she will be queen in the next one.....not king.
You need to rewatch the last 10 minutes of Endgame because Thor specifically declared her the new "King"
:0
@@ryancraig6675 women become queens not kings. King is for guys.
@@trevorthornley8835 Being a Queen usually means you're just a glorified housewife meant to bare new heirs; hence why she was given the title of King. Queens were never seen as truly equal to the status of Kings
@@ryancraig6675 what about queen Elizabeth? She seems pretty important. Who was the king? I don't even know.
This movie was really bad the story was all over the place I feel like this film was dark with humor in it. This movie to me is one of the worst MCU films this movie felt like a Jane Foster movie than a Thor movie, the villain was not great it felt like he was just there to compete against Loki and basically have no purpose. The score had Guardians of the Galaxy vibes to it. The story was like I said all over the place and I couldn't wrap my head around what the fuck is going on the comedy in this movie wasn't that good and I felt like there wasn't enough Thor in this movie. I just wished knew what if this movie was great and that the story made more sense. This movie I felt was a mess and this movie came after another bad movie Iron-man 3 which is terrible of a movie. This is the more serious of the Thor movies and it didn't make the film any better, the end credit scene was setting up the Guardians of the Galaxy which was cool to see but I really didn't get on how they got the red stone out of Malekeith. Nataile Portman in this movie was again the damsel in distress and I felt like in this movie she was the center of this movie. With all of this being said this movie sucked and I really didn't care for it I wish I knew what if we got a directors cut of this movie and would it better. The villain in this movie was so bad it made the mandarin look bad along with him being not a true villain and wasted him completely he didn't make the film any better either.
Good points!
@@TheKristianHarloff Thank you
