Apparently 1916 is a maligned Motorhead album but it's probably my favorite of theirs. And 1916 as a song is just crushing, Lemmy's sad delivery completely sells the story of these kids with dreams of glory who only ended up dead in the mud
To me it also always worked as a double meaning about the kids that got soldiers of rock'n'roll back in the day and burned out so young while Lemmy had to watch them fade, leaving him one of the last veterans still in the trenches.

@notwastd Yes they really were. only 10 million albums sold world-wide. That's absolutely nothing compared to equally big bands like Judas priest or Dio. And even more so when you realize that motörhead is the godfathers of thrash and speed metal. No one sounded as fast and dirty as motörhead in the mid to late 70's

Yes that's something Lemmy complained about in his Lemmy way. The merch sales were through the roof however. Nearly every rocker and non rockers had that T shirt.
The first 5 albums Motorhead, Overkill, Bomber, Ace of spades and Iron fist are my favorites because its the original line up, Lemmy, Fast Eddie Clarke and Philthy Animal Taylor. RIP boys

Not only does 1916 come across as so heartfelt it also seems like a track that could have been sung on the battlefield in 1916. There is a real classic instrumentation and the Simplicity of it and it's Ernest delivery makes it feel timeless.
Killed by Death should really be watched along with the rather awesome official video where Lemmy is doing some really, well Lemmy-ish things (no spoilers)!
Since you mentioned lesser hits, i strongly recommend you to check out the Another Perfect Day album. It was the first real change in Motörhead's sound and "genre", and diehard fans truly despised it then. But i'm sure you will like it a lot, as almost every one of us does today.
One day, around 2006, I went to a store, where you could listen to the first 30s of the songs on albums. I thought "hum, motorhead, I have already seen that name, let's see what it is", picked up the album "kiss of death", fell in love with the band, and bought it immediately, the first album I bought in my adult life, and since then, they have been my favorite band. There is not a single motorhead song I dislike. Not one. On their whole career, which is quite impressive. Like, I really enjoy Iron Maiden, but there are still some of their songs that are less good than others and that I don't really like. Not the case with motorhead. And yeah, in all of that, "another perfect day" is one of my favorite album, if not the one.
I was lucky enough to see them Liverpool Royal Court theatre 1983, I was not sure about the album to begin with but it is one that grows on you, love it now
It's such a good album. I mean Dancing on your grave, Shine and Back at the funny farm are up there amongst the best Motörhead songs. Plus you don't hear those everywhere so they still sound fresh.
When Lemmy writes a ballad, watch out.. cause he's not playin.. 1916 and "Dont Let Daddy Kiss Me" are 2 songs of theirs that just gut you.. I cant even listen to the latter it's that sad. Lemmy has a lyrical skill that cuts to the bone.. a very articulate and well read guy.. he knows how to turn a phrase and tell a story.
One thing about Lemmy that people don't seem to notice as much as they should. When he wanted to, he could write songs that both could and would BREAK someone.
Kira, listen to the songs from Ozzy's solo career and I'm already suggesting his first composition, called Goodbye to Romance, which in my opinion is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. The song portrays a difficult time in Ozzy's life and was recorded in 1980, at that time in 1977, Ozzy lost his father, went into such a severe depression that he started taking more drugs than usual and in 1979 it reached a point where that not even the members of Black Sabbath could stand , despite the fact that everyone in the band was drugged, but in the case of Ozzy it was beyond the limit and he didn't go to rehearsals anymore, which resulted in his resignation and the music itself would be a message for the old band and would also show some of the insecurity in his new life project. .
The 'I feel like the speed really lends itself to their music' followed by 1916 and the near-religious experience that comes with it is pure cinematography. 'Don't let daddy kiss me' is another song that punches you in the gut for a totally different reason to their normal music, and shows Lem's lyrical genius and how immense a person he was in reality that he'd drop the gritty façade to write a song about what he felt to be an extremely important issue purely BECAUSE he felt so strongly about it.
I think you would like the song We Are The Road Crew by Motorhead, it was written in honor of their road crew because of their back to back touring schedule.
Good call, an absolute banger of a track and one of my favourites. The live version from No Sleep Till Hammersmith is an absolute sledgehammer of a track.
"1916": since 1991 proving that heavy and noisy do not need to go together. I got the vinyl back then, when I was 17 and I could not understand most of the lyrics. My English listening skills were not much back then and the album did not come with a lyrics insert. As you say, the instruments already tell the story, but I wanted to know it all. There was no Internet in those days, so eventually I put the song on cassette tape and kept going back and forth trying to recognize the words, looking them up in the bilingual dictionary, and writing them down. I did not get every single thing correct, as I can now, but I finally could sing along and understand what was going on. Chills to this day every time this one comes on in my playlists. I love the rest of the album as well, great songs like "The one to sing the blues", "Angel City", "No voices in the sky", "I'm so bad (baby I don't care)" and, one of my favorites, "Going to Brazil" (which I would listen to at the beginning of every yearly flight I took from the US to go down visit my folks in Brazil). There's another weird song on that album: "Nightmare the Dreamtime". Weirder than "1916", for sure. :-)
If you like the fast paced Motörhead, here are some good recommendations: "Going To Brazil", "Rock Out" and "Thunder & Lightning" (this one is from their last album - it proofs, Lemmy lost nothing over the years and still was at 110% even shortly before his death).
Fun Fact: Lemmy lived in the same 2 bedroom apartment a block off the Sunset Strip and the Whiskey A Go-Go nightclub since moving to the US. The club has changed a lot since the early 80s but there's still a seat reserved for Lemmy at the far end of the bar.
I surely have some picks for the next Motörhead! My first one would be Till the End. It's one of the tracks of their last album, and although it's not the last track (that would be either a cover of Sympathy for the Devil or the original When the sky comes looking for you), it is for sure the farewell for the Godfather of heavy metal Lemmy. My second would be Love me Forever. It's another sad song, but a lot more rougher than 1916 (which is from the same album). My third recommendation would be Heroes, it's a David Bowie cover, and amazing. Lemmy loved to cover songs, having made from Rolling Stones to Bowie, from Sex Pistols to Metallica, and Iron Maiden and Ozzy as well. Fourth would be Hellraiser, he composed it with Ozzy and Zakk Wylde, Ozzy released his version first, and then Lemmy (they were friends, and Lemmy composed some songs in Ozzy's albums, and Ozzy sung in a track from Motorhead: I ain't no nice guy). I either suggest the original version from Motörhead, or the one Ozzy released recently combining both his and Lemmy's version. And last not least, two songs from The World is Yours, their album from 2010: Born to Lose, a more traditional approach for Motörhead, and Brotherhood of Man, one of the heaviest and darkest songs from the band. (I could say even more, like Born to Raise Hell, Orgasmatron, Iron Horse and Bomber, but I believe it would be too much for a single time) Great video as always!
You need to listen to their 1983 album "Another Perfect Day". It features Brian Robertson who had come from Thin Lizzy. Many fans feared it would be a much softer and more gentle album than the "Fast" Eddie Clarke era ones, however it is properly hard and heavy with some excellent songs on it. Check out the title track or "Back at the Funny Farm" but the whole album is really very good.
Great you liked 1916. Sadly Lemmy is often reduced to his fun rock'n'roll lyrics and tracks. I just want to say that I appreciate that when you do the skips in the music for copyright, that they're always flowing. like if the cut was done on the downbeat, the next part starts on the upbeat, making it not seem so jarring and it keeps the flow of the track going!
In the fall of 1984 (yes I'm old) my brother and I saw MotorHead at the Trocadaro in Philadelphia (built in 1925). Towards the end of there set it looked as though it was snowing on stage, but it was bits of plaster falling from the ceiling. They were shaking them out of their hair during the encore. The show was on a Friday Night and my ears didn't stop ringing until Sunday morning. 👍 cheers

The Motörhead live appearance 2004 in Düsseldorf/Germany (Stage Fright DVD) is a pretty flawless one. A video reaction worth are the first two songs "Dr. Rock" and "Stay Clean" followed by the grand final "Overkill". Kira, I LOVED that you got the Motorhead goosebumps! They have been my favourite band since I saw them on the 1916 tour in what might as well have been 1916! (1991). They were just awesome. Lemmy's stage presence was god-like. You're spot-on about Killed By Death. It's a radio track. You've already done Overkill (Lemmy's favourite Motorhead song, and mine!) but I would totally back suggestions made in the comments for Stay Clean (you will love the bass solo!) and Orgasmatron (which is ... different 😉). Another early bluesy but fast fave which I think you'll like is Love Me Like a Reptile (another nice bass solo). For a solid, groovy, mid-tempo one try Keep Us On The Road and for a slow n 'shexshy' one try Iron Horse. Both from their second album, 'Motorhead'. Have fun! 😀 I'm also a total nut-job fan of Hawkwind, Lemmy's band before Motorhead, if you want ideas for them. Also AMAZING!

Lemmy admitted that he had never played bass before joining Hawkwind in 1971... he used to be a rhythm guitarist, then a roadie. However, he said he loved the bass - the sound and shape... and really excelled at it in Hawkwind. Lemmy would use distortion pedals on his bass to sound like a rhythm guitar... that style actually inspired Metallica bassist Cliff Burton.
1916 was a fair account of World War 1; a war fought w/ olde world strategy and modern automatic weapons. The result was mass murder at close range. Military companies very often consisted of nearly entire villages worth of sons and fathers. The aftermath was villages of survivng women all w/ deceased sons, brothers, fathers, and husbands.
If you're a Lemmy fan, which you seem to be, you should check out The Head Cat... Lemmy's rockabilly band. They played a lot of 50s rockabilly covers like Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Buddy Holly.
Like a lot of Gen Y’s I learned of Motörhead via Metallica’s covers of “Overkill”, “Damage Case”, “Stone Dead Forever” and “Too Late Too Late” from Garage Inc. What a band.
oh yeah I remember being so excited buying the 12" vinyl of the Overkill and Bomber albums and playing them back at home, some really great tracks on here. I saw them live 3 times during this period and with this lineup; classic rock n roll

I'm an old school rocker, but I've recently discovered Nightwish, a band I've known about for years was never too keen on. But that was when Tarja was the lead singer. The Floor Jansen Nightwish is so awesome. You have to react to Wacken 2013 performance. Note this is just about a year, give or take a couple months, after Floor joined the band. She takes those songs and slays them, they are now hers. Absolutely one of the greatest live metal performances ever. Just tossing that out there to help you out. Check it out, you won't be disappointed. Peace!

Motorhead is basically the "missing link" between the rockabilly scene of the 50s and 60s, and the thrash metal scene of the 80s and 90s.

APD tour was my first time seeing Motorhead in concert. The whole night is emblazoned in my mind.

Good call, an absolute banger of a track and one of my favourites. The live version from No Sleep Till Hammersmith is an absolute sledgehammer of a track.

I got the vinyl back then, when I was 17 and I could not understand most of the lyrics. My English listening skills were not much back then and the album did not come with a lyrics insert. As you say, the instruments already tell the story, but I wanted to know it all. There was no Internet in those days, so eventually I put the song on cassette tape and kept going back and forth trying to recognize the words, looking them up in the bilingual dictionary, and writing them down. I did not get every single thing correct, as I can now, but I finally could sing along and understand what was going on. Chills to this day every time this one comes on in my playlists. I love the rest of the album as well, great songs like "The one to sing the blues", "Angel City", "No voices in the sky", "I'm so bad (baby I don't care)" and, one of my favorites, "Going to Brazil" (which I would listen to at the beginning of every yearly flight I took from the US to go down visit my folks in Brazil). There's another weird song on that album: "Nightmare the Dreamtime". Weirder than "1916", for sure. :-)

'1916' may just have the single most affecting, beautiful and utterly horrifying set of lyrics in rock history.
Going to Brazil and Orgasmatron are two ones you absolutely must to listen
If you like the fast paced Motörhead, here are some good recommendations: "Going To Brazil", "Rock Out" and "Thunder & Lightning" (this one is from their last album - it proofs, Lemmy lost nothing over the years and still was at 110% even shortly before his death).
Stone dead forever - especially the golden years e.p version - the whole e.p is brilliant - well worth a listen
Killed by Death always reminds me of Graham Chapman's line from the movie Yellow beard: "They'll have to kill me before I die!"
1st saw Motorhead in 1978, Caird Hall Dundee (Scotland), ears are still ringing today... so loud.
Fun Fact: Lemmy lived in the same 2 bedroom apartment a block off the Sunset Strip and the Whiskey A Go-Go nightclub since moving to the US. The club has changed a lot since the early 80s but there's still a seat reserved for Lemmy at the far end of the bar.
I surely have some picks for the next Motörhead!
My first one would be Till the End. It's one of the tracks of their last album, and although it's not the last track (that would be either a cover of Sympathy for the Devil or the original When the sky comes looking for you), it is for sure the farewell for the Godfather of heavy metal Lemmy.
My second would be Love me Forever. It's another sad song, but a lot more rougher than 1916 (which is from the same album).
My third recommendation would be Heroes, it's a David Bowie cover, and amazing. Lemmy loved to cover songs, having made from Rolling Stones to Bowie, from Sex Pistols to Metallica, and Iron Maiden and Ozzy as well.
Fourth would be Hellraiser, he composed it with Ozzy and Zakk Wylde, Ozzy released his version first, and then Lemmy (they were friends, and Lemmy composed some songs in Ozzy's albums, and Ozzy sung in a track from Motorhead: I ain't no nice guy). I either suggest the original version from Motörhead, or the one Ozzy released recently combining both his and Lemmy's version.
And last not least, two songs from The World is Yours, their album from 2010: Born to Lose, a more traditional approach for Motörhead, and Brotherhood of Man, one of the heaviest and darkest songs from the band.
(I could say even more, like Born to Raise Hell, Orgasmatron, Iron Horse and Bomber, but I believe it would be too much for a single time)

You need to listen to their 1983 album "Another Perfect Day". It features Brian Robertson who had come from Thin Lizzy. Many fans feared it would be a much softer and more gentle album than the "Fast" Eddie Clarke era ones, however it is properly hard and heavy with some excellent songs on it. Check out the title track or "Back at the Funny Farm" but the whole album is really very good.
Great you liked 1916. Sadly Lemmy is often reduced to his fun rock'n'roll lyrics and tracks. But if you want to discover some more of his other side, check out the songs I ain't no nice guy, Love me forever and Don't let daddy kiss me.

I just want to say that I appreciate that when you do the skips in the music for copyright, that they're always flowing. like if the cut was done on the downbeat, the next part starts on the upbeat, making it not seem so jarring and it keeps the flow of the track going!

In the fall of 1984 (yes I'm old) my brother and I saw MotorHead at the Trocadaro in Philadelphia (built in 1925). Towards the end of there set it looked as though it was snowing on stage, but it was bits of plaster falling from the ceiling. They were shaking them out of their hair during the encore. The show was on a Friday Night and my ears didn't stop ringing until Sunday morning. 👍 cheers

A video reaction worth are the first two songs "Dr. Rock" and "Stay Clean" followed by the grand final "Overkill".

Kira, I LOVED that you got the Motorhead goosebumps! They have been my favourite band since I saw them on the 1916 tour in what might as well have been 1916! (1991). They were just awesome. Lemmy's stage presence was god-like. You're spot-on about Killed By Death. It's a radio track. You've already done Overkill (Lemmy's favourite Motorhead song, and mine!) but I would totally back suggestions made in the comments for Stay Clean (you will love the bass solo!) and Orgasmatron (which is ... different 😉). Another early bluesy but fast fave which I think you'll like is Love Me Like a Reptile (another nice bass solo). For a solid, groovy, mid-tempo one try Keep Us On The Road and for a slow n 'shexshy' one try Iron Horse. Both from their second album, 'Motorhead'. Have fun! 😀 I'm also a total nut-job fan of Hawkwind, Lemmy's band before Motorhead, if you want ideas for them. Also AMAZING!

Lemmy admitted that he had never played bass before joining Hawkwind in 1971... he used to be a rhythm guitarist, then a roadie. However, he said he loved the bass - the sound and shape... and really excelled at it in Hawkwind.
Lemmy would use distortion pedals on his bass to sound like a rhythm guitar... that style actually inspired Metallica bassist Cliff Burton.

1916 was a fair account of World War 1; a war fought w/ olde world strategy and modern automatic weapons. The result was mass murder at close range. Military companies very often consisted of nearly entire villages worth of sons and fathers. The aftermath was villages of survivng women all w/ deceased sons, brothers, fathers, and husbands.
You should check out sam gopal. He was in it before the band he was in before motorhead. Its sort of psychedelic and his voice isn't rough yet.
If you're a Lemmy fan, which you seem to be, you should check out The Head Cat... Lemmy's rockabilly band. They played a lot of 50s rockabilly covers like Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Buddy Holly.

I'm an old school rocker, but I've recently discovered Nightwish, a band I've known about for years was never too keen on. But that was when Tarja was the lead singer. The Floor Jansen Nightwish is so awesome. You have to react to Wacken 2013 performance. Note this is just about a year, give or take a couple months, after Floor joined the band. She takes those songs and slays them, they are now hers. Absolutely one of the greatest live metal performances ever. Just tossing that out there to help you out. Check it out, you won't be disappointed. Peace!

Lemmy had no problem with writing songs that were "more commercial".. he actually did it for other artists like Ozzy (Mama I'm coming home was written by Lem). He said, and I'm paraphrasing "Fans accused us of selling out as soon as we put out our first album.being a sell out usually just means more people get to hear your music. I said "What'ja think I was doing this (music) for, to die alone in poverty?"
