Their first album pretty much influenced, along with Venom, Bathory and Celtic Frost, the whole second wave of black metal scene. That album has been cited as an influence by bands such as Mayhem, who were at the heart of that movement
They brought the Big Metal Carnival straight though our teenage hearts decades ago...I still have an oldschool Cd digi Box of Roots, and my favourite track is still Ratamahatta.)))
When brothers Max and Iggor Cavalera formed Sepultura in Brazil in 1984, they could barely play as teens and learned as they played gigs and recorded extreme metal music... They were one of the early death metal bands. Max Cavalera (vocals/ rhythm guitar) played riffs w/ 4 strings and Iggor Cavalera (drums) learned to play from the streets. The addition of Jairo Guedz (lead guitar) and live bassist Paulo Jr. resulted in the EP 'Bestial devastation' in 1985... followed by the full album 'Morbid visions' in 1986. Their early influences were early Metallica, early Slayer, Celtic Frost/ Hellhammer, Venom, etc... When Sepultura relocated to Sao Paulo from Belo Horizonte, they split w/ guitarist Jairo and replaced him w/ Andreas Kisser (lead guitar) who made an impact on their 1987 album 'Schizophrenia'... By 1988, their records had been released in Brazil only and were being imported to Europe and N. America. Sepultura got label interest and signed to Roadrunner Records in 1989. Producer Scott Burns (who produced most of the Florida death metal bands in the early to mid 90's from Cannibal Corpse to Deicide) worked on 2 Sepultura albums - 'Beneath the remains' (1989) and 'Arise' (1991) as Sepultura toured Europe and N. America and became one of the most promising international bands. In 1993, Sepultura opted to go for a new sound w/ more groove (like Pantera) and Brazilian influences on the album 'Chaos A.D.' and it eventually sold gold in the US (half million copies) - their most successful album. But there was a disconnect between Max Cavalera and the band after he and wife Gloria Cavalera (who managed the band) moved to Phoenix, Arizona while the rest of Sepultura stayed in Brazil. Their 1996 album 'Roots' was Sepultura's homage to tribal music in Brazil and heralded the beginnings of 90's 'nu metal' sound... it also eventually sold gold in the US and charted worldwide. Unfortunately, it was the last record to feature Max Cavalera... he left Sepultura after his wife Gloria's contract to manage the band were not renewed in 1996... His brother Iggor Cavalera left Sepultura in 2006 and he reunited w/ Max in the band Cavalera Conspiracy (or simply Cavalera) Max Cavalera formed the band Soulfly and released their nu metal debut album in 1998. It was Soulfly's only gold record in the US... People expected Soulfly to find the same level of success as the classic Sepultura... but that did not happen. Soulfly did release some stellar records like 'Primitive' (2002)... '3' (2002)... 'Prophecy' (2004)... etc. but endured a number of line-up changes. Some Soulfly songs - 'Back to the primitive' ... 'Eye for an eye' ... 'Prophecy'... 'Carved inside'... In 1998, Sepultura returned w/ new vocalist Derrick Green and released the album 'Against' (1998)... but the fans were upset and the album undersold... They still recorded some stellar records like 'Dante XXI' in 2006... 'A-Lex' in 2009... etc. But they had to fight the stigma for decades that Sepultura without Max or Iggor Cavalera was not Sepultura. Some later Sepultura songs - 'Sepulnation' ... 'Against' ... 'Kairos' ... 'Isolation' ... 'Come back alive'.
After 1993, Igor Cavalera (Sepultura"s drummer) created a new school of drumming . His innovative style in the album Chaos A.D. brought tribal elements (along with Brazilian rthytms as samba and axé) into the songs. One classic example of his contribution to extreme music is the introduction of the song "Territory".
Beneath the Remains and Arise are 2 of the greatest thrash albums of all time🤘 Not even old Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax or Megadeth match the attitude and aggression heard on those albums☠
Agreed. To find old-school thrash in a similar vein to early Sep, you kinda need to look over to Germany with bands like Sodom, Destruction and Kreator.
Sou brasileiro e nunca dei tanto valor assim a banda Sepultura, mas hoje tenho que sacramentar que a a introdução de Refuse/Resist é algo surreal de bom. Chega a arrepiar!
As a Brazilian, I was proud to see a Brazilian band go far, and many other bands that unfortunately didn't achieve the same success and projection, many of them from the same state as Sepultura, Minas Gerais. One of the first concerts I went to as a teenager was Raimundos (a Brazilian hardcore band), Sepultura and Ramones together in 1994.

@@duckstabed7381 It's good but in the plethora of metal that's been released since 30 years ago I guarantee if you looked you'd find better. Some of the sludgier elements on Chaos AD and Roots were influenced by the like of Neurosis and UK band Fudge Tunnel which Sepultura toured with, Max became good friends with their Guitarist/Singer Alex Newport, Alex even married into Max’s family and the two bands collaborated on an album under the name Nailbomb
Great video! As a Brazilian, it warms my heart to see Sepultura here! That said, I strongly recommend their version of Black Sabbath's "Symptom of the Universe". You'll be amazed, I can guarantee.
Saw them on the Arise tour. First metal concert I went to, barely into my teens. A few security guards started roughing up people who fell into the pit, Max Cavalera swung his BC Rich at one of the security guards, a fight ensues, it eventually dies down, they go back up into the stage and do a really, really pissed off cover of "Policia" by brazilian punk band "Ratos de Porão". As the adults with me dutifully got the hell out of there, riot police were being called into the venue. "So this is metal shows", I thought.
And yes, their 80s/early 90s albums were somewhere one the very heaviest spectrum of thrash, borderline touching on death metal tendencies. Chaos A.D. is at once groovier but also, there's a lot of punk/hardcore influence thrown into the mix. Max used to say in interviews that he had a favourite tape in his youth that had Celtic Frost's Morbid Tales on one side and Discharge's "Protest and Survive" on the other. This being the times before the internet, he had no idea what they looked like, and thought it was all the same genre, even though Celtic Frost are very much a Thrash Metal band and Discharge are considered Punk/Hardcore. Roots marks an even bigger change, both by flirting with the sort of groove present in Nu Metal, but also by adding a lot of brazilian tribal percussion and vibes. It's the last album with their "classic" lineup, which had been pretty much unchanged until that point.
I'm 62 and they are one of the best Live bands I have ever seen. Chaos AD was absolutely huge when it came out. There is no bad song on the entire album. Great reaction to a great band.
Roots bloody roots is off the album Roots and was Sepultura's first foray into nu metal and was inspired by Korn ( both Johnathon Davis and Max Cavilera have confirmed this ) and this was the last album Max did with Sepultura and he went on to create the band soulfly which concentrated on nu metal ( which by the way is also a banging band ) Roots is a fantastic album all by its self as well. Love seeing a fellow Aussie doing reactions. Keep up the great work!!!
Many thrash bands slowed down and went to a more groove heavy route. Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax all did it. Grunge was hurting them. Not as much as it did hairmetal though. Roots was the last album to have both Cavalera brothers. Max(vocals, guitar) left in 1996 with his brother Igor(drums) leaving in 2006. In my opinion, they haven’t been the same. “No Cavalera, No Sepultura!”
I love how you chose a song from each album to get a general idea of how their sound evolved. Personally, I think their peak was during the Arise and Chaos AD time period. Those albums are absolute classics imo. As far as the drumming, I feel like the style gives such a unique and even a cultural feel and vibe to a lot of their music
Dead embryonic cells is such a great track, I simply adore your reactions, you are so unique and cool, and the way you naturally pick up on some background details is so cool, so cool reactions!
"Arise" in my opinion was a groove metal song alongside Pantera's album "Cowboys From Hell" and featured a breakdown, which people argue is a hardcore/metalcore/deathcore "thing."
The entire ARISE album is brilliant. Desperate Cry is the best song, you should react to that song. Actually you should do a reaction to the entire album.
I think you should listen to Celtic Frost. I think it's a mix of all the genres you like; thrash and doom metal. The albums I recommend are Morbid Tales, To Mega Therion, and Monotheist (which is more doom metal).
If you enjoy 'Roots Bloody Roots' I highly rec' you known with another products by that album great producer that was trully the sound-butcher - Ross Robinson! For example albums that would be very another sounds without his genious work - Deftones '95, Korn '96, Slipknot '99. But, best choise what listen to next if you want dive in alt' metal 90s classics than I highly rec' you listen real masterpiece by band Faith No More - album 'Angel Dust' from 1992!
Very cool to see you've finally gotten to Sepultura again. 90s Sepultura was so damn good, with Roots being their peak. Maybe it's because I first heard Sepultura around the same time one of my friends picked up the "Grindcrusher - Earache Records Sampler" CD, but now I want to get you on to some of those bands, like Carcass, Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower, and my personal favourite, Godflesh. Dare to dream, I guess! 🤘😅
Man, I really love this band. Even if I don´t enjoy their groove/nu metal stuff, specially after Max Cavalera (guitars and vocals) left, but I still recognize the importance of Chaos AD and most importantly, Roots. Their first album is kind of blackened death/thrash(?, they were like 16 at the time and didn´t even speak english properly. Max wrote the lyrics in portuguese and then used a dictionary to translate. It is not a bad album per se, but you can tell that a bunch of teens with no money did the best they could with what they had. In fact, recently, the Cavalera brothers (Max and Igor on drumms) re-recorded their first EP and their first two albums. Morbid Visions definitelyneeded that treatment. The band really showed all it had once Andreas Kisser joined in in guitars. Schizophrenia, even if it still has a pretty raw production (fixed in the just released re-recording, even tho I honestly still prefer the rawness of the og) is an amazing thrash album. The riffs and song structures really stand out. Lyrics start to get better as well. Max and Andreas were an amazing guitar duo, they complemented each other so perfectly and imo, niether Max nor Andreas have sounded better ever again. Beneath the Remains is my fav Sepultura album, and probably top 3 metal album oat. Fun and interesting riffs and ryhtm changes along with creative song structures and amazing lyrics. Honestly. I think Beneath the Remains is pretty much perfect when it comes to thrash. And remember, they were still 19-20 when they did this. I don´t need to say more, album speaks for itself honestly. Arise is also pretty good. Amazing way to close their thrash era. I feel it is more accesible than BtR or Schizo and because of that in some parts it kind of looses some charm in certain aspects, but it´s still an amazing album. Sepultura´s rythm changes shine the most in this album. So seamless sometimes you miss the briliance of them. Lyrics still going strong. But you can tell it´s the beginning of their change in sound. Subtle, but the clues were there.
Check out Trans Am, hidden 90s/00s gem. Recommended tracks: - Play in the Summer - Ballbados - Carboforce - Futureworld - The Dark Gift - Cocaine Computer Then go into weirder albums like The Surveillance, You Can Always Get What You Want, etc. (they have plenty)
It was the most enjoyable "Dead Embryonic Cells" reaction i ever watched. I'm from their hometown in Brasil called "Belo Horizonte" (translation: "Beautiful Horizon). You should react to "Desperate Cry Live", "Attitude Live in Ozzyfest", and Rattamahata. And watch Dead Embryonic live in Barcelona, it blow you away. Brasil summoned 🇧🇷
Excited for another one of my favorite bands of all time. I've see them live two times in Greece (with different vocalist and drummer) and Max Cavalera two times with two different bands (Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy with his brother Igor). Igor considered one of the greatest heavy hitters in the history of metal drumming
For me, the "Chaos A.D." album is the only one, where i only skip one song ("Clenched Fist"), but the rest is perfect. The single most perfect Sepultura song, must be "Inner Self" Under Siege Live In Barcelona 1991! And ONLY THIS version! The album one don't even come near to this one. They had very few good songs, after Max left the band, but they mainly died for me. Just like Queen died with Freddie.
I always loved Sepultura while Max Cavalera was the singer, both their thrash and their groove metal eras. Some more favorites: Territory, Desperate Cry, Inner Self, Kaiowas, Attitude, Ratamahatta
Igor Cavallera is the name of the drummer, Max the singer & Rythm is his brother. They developed from thrash to being the OGs of groove metal as they started to incorporate more Brazilian vibes into their sound. I grew up on these guys. Arise & Roots r top shelf albums. So good...... If u love that heavy groove low end, u might enjoy Soulfly also, Max's second creation. The song Brasil is purely epic. Tribal 🤘
Hey!!! It's nice to see you back. Thank you for this video, as a Sepultura fan. If you haven't yet, you should try the album "Far Beyond Driven" by Pantera for the real deal. It's crazy and fascinating.
Roots sounds the way it does bc the singer became inspired by the band 'Korn' with the new genre they started in the mid 90s called Nu-Metal, he left Sepultura after that album bc the rest of the band wanted to do more thrash metal so he left and created the band 'Soulfly'. If you check those two bands out then you are opening a whole new can of worms
You need to check out Max Cavalera (He ws the one singing) Soulfly group. They mix in Nu Metal and other metal. Cavalera is another group of his with his brother the drummer you were talking about and they just rerecorded an older Sepultura album when they were still death metal it is awesome.
Legal de ver o sepultura que cada album se via uma clara evolução em tudo, e quando compara com a epoca é ainda mais incrivel, Igor facilmente um dos melhores bateristas do metal

The entire ARISE album is brilliant. Desperate Cry is the best song, you should react to that song. Actually you should do a reaction to the entire album.
The album Arise is a masterpiece
Você é ótima! Da prazer de curtir Sepultura com qualidade. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Adoro curtir essa Reaction! Essa incrível mulher fornece altas alegrias. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I think you should listen to Celtic Frost. I think it's a mix of all the genres you like; thrash and doom metal. The albums I recommend are Morbid Tales, To Mega Therion, and Monotheist (which is more doom metal).
Chaos ad, roots and Quadra are masterpieces of heavy metal.
Sepultura é do caralho ❤🤘🏻
Hugs from Brazil! 🇧🇷
Great channel! ❤
Hell fuggin yes!!! Sepultura is spelled total fire!!
It's understandable your reaction to dead embryonic cells. It's an incredible song in the best era of world metal.🇧🇷🇧🇷🤘🏾
SEPULTURA DO BRASIL 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷 LET'S GO 🔥🔥🔥
I’d be interested in a Sepultra reaction to their newer era as well.
Moin aus Deutschland. Die 90er waren geil. Headbang, baby!
Check out Trans Am, hidden 90s/00s gem. Recommended tracks:
- Play in the Summer
- Ballbados
- Carboforce
- Futureworld
- The Dark Gift
- Cocaine Computer
Then go into weirder albums like The Surveillance, You Can Always Get What You Want, etc. (they have plenty)
Excelente! Gostei tanto que vou repetir! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
That is the real Sepultura
*Sepultura é muito bom* 🇧🇷
INNER SELF
It was the most enjoyable "Dead Embryonic Cells" reaction i ever watched. I'm from their hometown in Brasil called "Belo Horizonte" (translation: "Beautiful Horizon). You should react to "Desperate Cry Live", "Attitude Live in Ozzyfest", and Rattamahata. And watch Dead Embryonic live in Barcelona, it blow you away. Brasil summoned 🇧🇷
Sepultura é minha banda favorita quase todo dia estou ouvindo Sepultura cara eu amo essa banda.
Sempre curto Sepultura lembro de curtir seu Reaction. É muito agradável...... divertido!
The Derrick years are criminally underrated and I dont get the people crying for the return of Max hes put out tons of good music since 98
Sepultura needs two guitars. Kisser is great but it's just not the same. Live they're a shadow of what they used to be. Shame.
@@sureduck I agree. Definitely missing a 2nd guitarist in the live setting. That massive sound just isn't there.
Chaos AD was my first experience with Sepultura and will forever remain my gold standard for this band and Trash in general.
I recommend "Desperate Cry" from the live in Barcelona
The whole concert was awesome.
Como é legal ver as novas gerações curtindo as músicas da maior banda de rock do Brasil! Sepultura!
Tribal 🤘
It was a good overview of different Sepultura's eras. Missed something post-Cavalera brothers, maybe Convicted in Life or Sepulnation.
You should've listened to "Territory" or "Nomad" off of Chaos
Eu fico super feliz quando nosso Brasil tem sua contribuição no nas músicas internacionais, é motivo de orgulho, eu sou fã do Angra
Mas respeito muito o Sepultura é uma banda gigantesca assim como Angra.
Attitude is my fav
Seen them five times with Max..my buddy Logan was in Soulfly too
that was great! this is everything a new listen should be
hope to see more stuff! cheers
My personal favorite song of theirs is Desperate Cry. Live performances are particularly awesome.
The WAY she is INTO IT damn lady bro, my just consumed my 101% total respects for the whole week.
Now check out max’s side project with Alex from fudge tunnel called Nailbomb. Great metal industrial album.
The album Arise is the best.
Como brasileiro, sempre me sinto muito orgulhoso escutando esses clássicos. Muito respeito e agradecimentos ao Derrick Green. Adoro a obra com ele também, mas Sepultura clássico é surreal
Sepultura from Brazil!!!! Yeahhhh
Refuse/Resists sounds like Punk/Hardcore to me while Roots Bloody Roots has quite some Korn vibes.
Pandora Box opened
Groove metal is when they slow down thrash and focus more on the groove. Less fast parts. The riffs also kinda become less technical as a result.
Seen them live 6 months ago , first saw them in the 90s still great
Legal de ver o sepultura que cada album se via uma clara evolução em tudo, e quando compara com a epoca é ainda mais incrivel, Igor facilmente um dos melhores bateristas do metal
🤘🏻Sepultura with Max🤘🏻
Gen x retirement communities are going to be interesting.
SEPULTURA means grave in portuguese from the verb SEPULTAR: to grave, to bury.
