I have to admit, by the title of this episode and by the initial setup I was getting ready to impart some choice words your way (I'm sorry, are you about to tell me that my personal collection, built upon my personal taste is WRONG?!) but you guys didn't let me down. Equipping yourself with knowledge and experience (by researching and by actually trying on the watches, if possible) is absolutely invaluable. It will save you a ton of headaches, money, and heartbreak. That's not to say that there aren't moments in all of our lives where we are just awe-struck by a timepiece that captures our hearts (and our savings) but as a whole, I couldn't agree with you more - we should give ourselves the joy of diving deep into our hobby and educating ourselves with info, and in the process figuring out what we like, what we don't like, and possibly even being surprised! It's actually what happened with me (short version) I wanted the JLC Reverso as a dress watch, but actually fell in love with the Cartier Tank Must - tried on both, and I'm currently looking at the Tank as I type this comment 😃 keep up the great work!

Most important thing (for me personally), when talking about collecting is doing your research. It’s not just that you will be more confident about what you want and knowing what you will get if you buy a certain watch, it’s also just so much fun researching new watches, which you might not have on your radar, when you are just walking into a boutique!

It’s easy to fall into the hype and want to buy any and everything as quickly as possible but it’s when you take a step back and learn to properly appreciate what you have that makes your collection turn from just any boring or flex watch collection to being “my watch collection.”

For watches, I’ve already planned which watches I would get for my milestones in the future. I’ve done research and compared them to other watches that are similar to them. Evaluated the reasons as why they’re my picks. Eventually, when I get them as long as my taste doesn’t change over time. I’d be happy with them.

Just wanted to mention that a great way to expand/improve a watch collection is watch straps. For example, I have a Reverso and love wearing it with The Quint, The Rover, and a JLC ostrich strap. Easily turns one watch into four (counting the black croc it comes with). Great content guys!

This was way more refreshing than the standard "dress, sport, daily" collection advice that you often hear, as if every collection has boxes it needs to check off to be successful. I think Christian's collecting style--focusing on a specific style that works for you and concentrating value in a small set of regularly-worn watches--is similar to how I want my collection to grow over time.

I think a lot of people are surprised by how much they like smaller watches when they try them on. The issue is that much of the time, those people don't try smaller sizes because for a long time the industry has told them that watches have to be 42mm or they're not worth buying... I picked up a "unisex" size tank recently, and I look forward to putting it on every time I get the opportunity. Thanks for the great tips, guys!

I love this video. When you guys talked about being realistic that totally speaks to me. When I started watch collecting I had 8 sport watches(alot of divers) with minimum 100m water resistance and 1 dress watch. I realize later that I really truly love dress watches as sartorially they work better for me. But in my head I kept fighting with the idea that I needed at least 100m water resistance in case I find myself in situation that would warrant sufficient water resistance. That idea inhibited me from wearing watches I truly love on an everyday basis. Which to me now sounds ridiculous. I had to except the fact that 99.9% of the time I am not in situation that would require a water resistant sports watch. For the times I am in said situation whether its swimming, fishing, camping or hiking I either don’t wear a watch or I wear my cheap microbrand Rolex Explorer Esque watch. Those situations are all planned anyways. Now I have 3 vintage dress watches, a 90’s two tone speedmaster and a Baltany Rolex Exploreresque watch and I use my dress watches everday. I also love the idea of a small collection like Christian said.

Excellent video, insightful as always. I especially like the “have you considered” and “can you justify this choice” to yourself angle. I’ve a collection of 9 watches and growing. Mostly different brands, one mistake which I’ve since swapped out/upgraded as I’ve learnt and understood more. Funnily enough, I’m really close to going for a Reverso (Tribute duo-face blue/white with blue leather strap). I like and have a Cartier (Drive), but prefer the more intricate art-deco detail on the case, and more interesting dial (as well as variety on duo) of the Reverso. Love to see in future, a ‘have you considered’ video for different genres (dress, diver, chronograph etc) and hear your opinions on what some of the decision criteria could be for what resonates for different wrist sizes, skin tones (steel/rose gold/yellow gold), dress code/styling, occasions (statement piece, etc), and personality types etc etc.

My goal has always been to buy watches that I absolutely love and are tied to milestones in my life, but I keep getting distracted by smaller “cool” watches. These watches have thus far never ended up permanent watches in my collection and I end up buying/selling the “flavor of the month” relatively frequently. I can’t help but feel like it’s wasteful, but I’ve accepted that it’s still fun and ultimately worth the costs.

I bought my 116610LV on a whim, kind of.
My dad's been a one-watch-forever guy-an 1803, black diamond dial, reverse barked, had it since 2005. All of his memories have been made with that on his wrist.
After a lot of thought, going between a BLNR, a CHNR, and a 126610LV, I decided on the LV for my next watch (loved it, what a great piece). About a month later, I had this realization that I wanted to be like my dad-one watch for all of my memories. I traded the Starbucks and my speedy toward a day-date of my own ("if it's good enough for him, who am I to want more?").
3 days later I realized it felt like I was playing dress-up with dad's clothes, like it just wasn't "me". I returned the day-date and now I had no "nice" pieces. At a loss, I figured, "oh, I'll just get that green sub again, but in the more convenient 20mm lug width" and snagged a Hulk without giving it any further thought.
What a great decision that was. That green dial-you know. The day I die, this watch will still be on my wrist.

My two advises for building a collection or buying a watch in general: 1. if you like a particular watch buy that one even if you need to wait little longer instead of buying another one you don't like that much but maybe has better specs or better price. Price and specs you will forget soon but you'll look at that watch every single day. 2. buy with your heart, buying watching is supposed to be an emotional investment rather than by specs or spreadsheets. Don't do spreadsheets, buy what you like and what resonates better with you. You will know :)

For me, having a bunch of inexpensive watches in various styles has given me valuable on-wrist experience. Through that, I feel much more confident entering the luxury watch world. Do ample our research when buying luxury, absolutely, but you can't know how they'll feel until you wear at least something similar on your wrist for a while. I know that inexpensive watches may cut against the grain, but you'll get a good idea of what you like and what you don't. I've learned so much from them, and taken great pleasure in them in the meantime. Then, you'll come in a knowledgeable buyer and find exactly what fits your desires.

I think for a lot of collectors, it’s a case of our finances & appreciation for certain watches maturing, not necessarily changing the kinds of watches we like.

In researching category when deciding the type of watch to get, taking the reverso example - probably good to, at a high level, think about why square vs round, time only vs more complications, narrow it down that way - then really ramp up research once you’ve eliminated other broad categories of dress watches and narrowed down your search

I always say that when it's down to two watches, buy both. The watch you should buy first is the one that might be harder to get, limited, or might be discontinued later. If the second watch on the list is readily available and you'll most likely still want it later, buy that one first. I've used this strategy numerous times and it's always played out quite well.

  • @TheKreattion

My philosophy for collecting watches is that I need to be able to name 3 physical characteristics as to why I like that watch. These reasons can't include superficial things like crystal material and case size. I like smaller watches, but I'd never deprive myself of something I love because its 40mm instead of 38.
For example, I have a vintage swatch, reference number GB 417. The things I love about it are the floating hour hand, the placement of the swatch logo, the placement of the date combined with the fact that its magnified, and the texture and tone of the dial. These 4 characteristics are literal things I can point to when people ask me about the watch and they continuously justify my ownership of the watch. And if at any point, I no longer appreciate those features, then I know it will be time to move on from the watch.

Watches are part of a journey. I hear people have a tattoo because they like the design, the image but people also get a tattoo as it is part of their journey through life and the memories that it permanently records. I love my watches as part of my journey in life, for those big moments love, travel, and people I have connected with… we all have reasons for our watch passion, all I feel is you should enjoy the piece you have chosen and the life they have from the mechanical or quartz movement.

I totally agree with the whole idea of trying out a dress watch. When I last purchased a watch I had my heart set on a fairly modern presenting dive watch. After doing some shopping around, however, I ended up purchasing a vaguely vintage inspired (but completely original) dress watch. I can wear it with anything! I swap out the straps all the time and feel just as comfortable wearing it out to a casual lunch with friends as I do wearing it in the boardroom.

Be open to the timepieces you weren’t searching for in the first place but that find you anyway. Two of my favorites are ones I hadn’t given much thought to and one in particular I had only moments to pull the trigger on before another buyer at WindUp was going to purchase it. I knew enough to know they were solid companies (Tissot & Junghuns) but it was the fortuitous on the wrist opportunity that sealed the deal. Still my only watches from those two brands but my eyes are a little more open.

Whilst I agree with all your points, the one that hit home the most was to see your watch in person. Not just for the size as you say, but so many watches look completely different in person to in pictures, no matter how good the picture is. I looked at several Oris watches online for months, convinced of what I wanted but dropped it all when I saw it in person. Conversely I disregarded the Seiko Alpinist online but absolutely fell in love when I saw it randomly in a store window. I know it’s not easy for most people but I know that when I purchase my next luxury watch, even though I have front runners, I plan to go into a large jewellers and look at everything they have. Because I guarantee I will have dismissed a watch online that is absolutely gorgeous in person

T&H is a great research resource. My prob though is more research tends to result in much longer wishlist! You guys are entertaining as hell. And I will say buying from you a vintage piece was a great experience. Thx!

Interesting thoughts. I agree, that when you dont buy a 300m over a 1000m diver bc you think that 300m will not serve your need or you just want 1000m for the sake of it beeing the bigger number, thats dumb (mayby just unreasenable :)).
But for me, when I buy a dive watch, I really appreaciate the tool-watch aspekt of it. The fact that you pushed the watch to the limit or the fact that it was build for actually diving with it.
Thats why I would prefer a Sinn U50 over a Omega Diver 300m bc for me the Sinn has more charm, since it is a tool watch meant to dive with, regardless if I dive with it or not.

Best advice ive heard. Realistic expectations of what you're going to do with a watch is probably the least talked about.

You guys are so right. I've been listing after Rolex sports or DateJust.... went into an old vintage watch store in York, England.... they had a Blancpain Villeret.. from around 1994... stunning white Roman numeral dial.....wears like a dream....1/3 of the price of Rolex... then i tried on some JLC master thin at an AD.. wow the movement and the mechanical sound of the date changing. Honestly I've never seen such quality before ... and an IWC mark XX which is big but gorgeousand i want one, a few Grand Seikos too.. the titanium was unbelievable... so light and gorgeous..... everything was stunning and I really enjoyed it all much more than the Rolex watches I tried on before...
Ended up totally reshuffling my wish list
Didn't make a big purchase but did get a 35mm Enicar (Swiss brand from 1913 who died in the quartz crisis in the 80s), 1960s dressy little watch and got a 16mm brown leather strap for it... £135 total! Hesalite glass, beautiful champagne / yellow dial....applied indices... probably only 6mm thick.... it is an absolute beauty...
My mind is now off the Rolex hype and into new ventures...
It really is worth going on the journey with no wish list
In the future I would love a JLC or a Patek when I win that lottery.. and hopefully the 50m water resistance will be enough for daily needs...I can always take the G shock square on any outdoor adventures (the IWC is also a fantastic option)
Happy hunting and watch geeking everyone! And as always thanks for a great vid guys

One of the advices my father gave me when I was that no matter how much people explain, you're not going to understand until you do it yourself.
Enjoy your watches, make the mistakes, just don't go broke doing so!

Really enjoyed the talk on watch features. IMO, at the end of the day, you're unlikely to regret buying a watch that you love the look of on your wrist because it hasn't got a certain WR or a date function etc. If you can afford it and it would genuinely make you happy, buy it.

I totally get why Michael still wants the 1964 Carrera after acquiring the Reverso, as both models occupy totally opposite spots in the watch spectrum, even if both are quite elegant and, in my humble opinion, both can be worn in casual or formal occasions, under the cuff.

You've always got to try the watch on. I really thought I wanted a Cartier Santos for the longest time, but the first time I put one on my wrist I hated it. Watches i never thought I'd be into have grabbed me from a shop window. RUclips is amazing, Instagram is amazing, but neither will ever tell you what it's like to wear what you're looking at.

I agree with the idea of trying as many watches as you can. I really wanted a Tudor gmt. I tried on Rolex, Oris, tag, Tudor, omega, panerai, jlc, Bremont. I think I’m missing some. But then tried on a grand Seiko sbga415, and I couldn’t get it out of my head. I’ve owned it for a year and a half and can still go 2-3 weeks with it and not swap to something else. I love that watch and am so glad I tried as many things as I did.

Literally the exact video I needed. I love collecting watches and I always have. The only thing that stopped me from having more than 2 watches in my childhood was money. Now, I'm a university student with a well-paying part-time job and have no extra costs. I want to (and have been) saving up for a graduation watch but I feel myself getting distracted from that saving goal by vintage watches and new watches under 300 euros. I don't want to have tons of watches but I want to have watches to enjoy right now instead of waiting years.

When it comes to collecting for me, it’s all about research and the history of that particular model or brand even. Maybe I’m a romantic but I really appreciate watches that have been around for decades, even a century. Call me boring but I only buy the “icons” - they have that status for good reason, they’ve lived through the ups and downs and fashion trends.
