Badd Medicine here and its Scott Pilgrim reaction time
From the moment the film begins, it becomes evident that Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a film like no other. Edgar Wright's distinctive directorial style shines through with rapid-fire editing, kinetic camera movements, and a vibrant visual palette that draws heavily from the comic book medium. The seamless blend of live-action, video game aesthetics, and comic book sensibilities creates an immersive and exhilarating experience from start to finish.
Michael Cera delivers an awesome performance as the lovable yet flawed Scott Pilgrim. His awkward charm and deadpan delivery are perfectly suited for the character, capturing both his insecurities and determination. The supporting cast, including Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers and Kieran Culkin as Scott's sarcastic roommate, provide memorable performances that add depth and humor to the story. And seeing Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brandon Routh, Thomas Jane and Brie Larson we awesome as well!
This films seems to celebrate video games, music, comics, and pop culture references with infectious enthusiasm. We are sure there this is loaded with easter eggs. Wright's attention to detail in recreating the visual language of video games and comic books is truly impressive. The movies themes of love, self-discovery, and personal growth. While the narrative may seem whimsical and fantastical on the surface, it delves into relatable emotions and struggles. The film balances its comedic moments with genuine heartfelt scenes, allowing the characters to evolve and mature as they face their personal demons.
The soundtrack of the film deserves special mention as it becomes an integral part of the storytelling. With an eclectic mix of indie rock and catchy tunes, the music enhances the energy and rhythm of the film, amplifying the emotions and driving the action forward.
Feels like we should do a rewatch and get to know more of the lore. Overall, fun film for not knowing anything about this world.

@@chand911well it has lines word for word from the comics but Ramona's personality was completely different and stephen wasn't shown to be gay and they obviously didnt have everything in it like the robot fights or a lot of Nega scott. Edgar Wright wanted scott to end with knives so he made Ramona Unlikeable and the finished the movie but the writer of the comics said it had to be Ramona so they just changed the ending. They also didn't explain Scott is really good at fighting like he is in the comics.
Its faithful in it's own right but also very different.
Edit: They did make changes like Envy killed Todd in the comics and other things. They are both equally good though but are different

    • @CrownlessKing88
      @CrownlessKing88 11 месяцев назад +9

@@blaketfg9374 that’s more what I meant was there’s a lot of Word for Word lines, and just the main story beats are the same. I know however, they left out a ton of plot points. And yes, there are some major changes or things that just didn’t happen but for the most part when I remember it was quite similar like I think there is a whole fight between Ramona and Envy that they didn’t use in the movie. It’s been a long time since I read them but I know that they’re not exactly the same or anything there are many differences, but there are many things that are the same.

    • @blaketfg9374
      @blaketfg9374 11 месяцев назад +6

@@CrownlessKing88 Oh yeah for sure, and the things they didn't have time to explain that happened in the comics they would throw in quick easter eggs for. Like Scott fighting a purple suited dude to be with Kim, he actually did that and wasn't being sarcastic. Or the girl with the bionic arm that Todd cheated on Envy with just being in the background. It's faithful in it's own right. They are making a full show that's animated with the cast from this movie. I wonder if it is going with the style from this movie, with Ramona being less emotional and such, or if they are going to be more faithful to the comics.

I think its important to note that him dating Knives is one of the tells that Scott is kind of a loser at the beginning of the story. He has nothing going on in his life and is a "nice" guy. Any character older than Knives sees through it and get that he's actually a more indirect form of evil, also hinted to by Nega Scott being a pretty chill dude among other things.

This whole movie is an allegory of relationships as a whole. Any time we start a new relationship, we have to deal with all of that person's evil ex's, not in a physical way, but as the scars they left on the partner. It's why the fights get more difficult as the movie goes on; the more recent the ex, the more raw the lingering psychological effects of that relationship. In the end, it took both of them working together to defeat Ramona's big ex, just like how it takes both people in a relationship to work through big traumas. There's so much to be said about this film and its many layers.

A few things here (sorry if it gets long):
Edgar sent them to a martial arts bootcamp for 6 months before filming so they could actually look competent during the fights.
Each of the evil exes have their number attached to them in some way (2 on Chris Evan's trailer, Brandon wearing a shirt with the number 3, etc.)
When you said "crank it to 11", if you pause the screen, it is actually goes to 11 in Japanese, so they actually did that.
Unfortunately the movie came out before the end of the comics. The twins were robot master builders in the comics.
The coins (you can see it best after Gideon's defeat) are actual Canadian coins (You can easily see the Twoonie ($2) coin as it is copper surrounded by silver.
The actor that played Matthew Patel is actually a Bollywood actor, which does sort of fit when they broke into song during the fight.
They cut from the Comic that Todd was cheating on Envy with the drummer (who has a bionic arm)
As some others mention, Mae Whitman who plays Roxie is a prolific voice actor. She did Katara in Avatar the Last Airbender, She did Tinkerbell, and she also did Batgirl in a bunch of DC Animated shows.

I think this is one of those movies that you are just supposed to sit back and enjoy, don't think too much about it. The transitions are INCREDIBLE. If you look at some of the breakdown video essays on this movie, it's crazy how the director sort of hid how disconnected Scott is in the first part through transitions - there's a back and forth between him and knives and the camera keeps switching making you think that it's all happening in one place, but if you pay attention to the background THE LOCATION KEEPS CHANGING with transitions of cars, people, clothing racks. It's really cool.
Plus the music is so rad.

Think of the film as a video game. The dream sequences are like secret levels and tunnels into Scott's mind. Each ex is a boss fight. There's a ridiculous amount of subtext and Easter eggs for gamers, film geeks, and comic fans. Also, the original creator of the graphic novel was hugely inspired by video games. Toronto's a cold place in the winter and I'm guessing he spent his formative youth playing games like most kids back then.

This movie is chock full of editing genius. Every time Scott says, "There's girls watching" and Chris Evans looks up and down to the beat of a faint THUMP THUMP, I lose it.

I'm really not a Michael Cera fan, don't care for Super Bad, but I LOVE this movie. The editing, the diologue, the music, so good. The cast is stacked. I love how the fights surprise everyone, but after they go right back to normal.

The movie's a coming-of-age story of a lazy, self-centered, immature, freeloader who has to learn to grow up, become responsible, learn accountability and self-respect after he meets the girl of his dreams. It's told in a very stylized way and uses video games as a metaphor for Scott fighting his battles/demons/growing up.

Great reaction guys, so many moments I'm glad made the edit.
Can't really remember when I first saw this film, but I was probably as confused as you were.
Like most of Edgar Wright's films they get even better on a rewatch as you start to spot all the details and Easter eggs.
I'm sure someone in the comments has already mentioned that Michael Cera throwing the Amazon package in the bin was done practically and took quite a lot of takes to get right.

One of the few movie adaptations from a comic done well. A lot of the stylisation pays homage to games and culture or the late 90s so it's no wonder there are a bunch of game references in the movie even with the way the story is panned out.
Absolutely loved this. Appreciate coming into this with an open mind. Hoping for more!

So yeah this is basically Surrealism, reality with a touch of fantasy or scifi fantasy mixed in. Your not supposed to take it seriously as your just supposed to have fun with it and be nostalgic for video games and anime tropes. While not the best written stories Scott Pilgrim is a fun time with interesting characters and a good lesson with the idea of letting the past go, accepting it and moving on with your life.

Interesting reflection by Oak about the end with his "evil self" there. A less philosophical take on it is that Nega Scott is his opposite.
So when they walk out and he says "He's just a nice guy", it's because he is... Scott is a jerk the entire movie, and his opposite is a nice guy.
About easter eggs: there are too many to list, but here's a few. The first ex having 1 stripe on his shoulders, 2nd ex (Lucas Lee, LL) pointing with two fingers, there were 2 X:es on the signs. When the Roxy briefly harrassed him there were 4 X signs hinting that she'd be number 4. Todd has 3 stripes on his shirt (and the number 3). Oh, and he throws him through the walls 3 times (and the last time it is 3 walls), and the 3 strikes for the vegan police. After the 4th fight, after Scott and Ramona argued, his shirt says 4½.
The twins, 5 and 6, when they turn up the volume, they turn it to 11 (5+6, as well as spinal tap reference probably).
When they are going to the party where he first talks to Ramona, the store sign in the background has a broken letter. FLIGHT CENTRE says F IGHT CENTRE.
That was a few from the top of my head :D

This movie certainly feels dreamy and surreal. A lot of dialog that seems outlandish actually happened in the comics like the moon getting punched or Scott fighting a giant. Also, Ramona briefly mentions how she travels/teleports by going through Subspace, which Scott occasionally picks up in dreams. Also, I've always really liked the NegaScott gag at the end.

I absolutely love this movie and one of my favourites, its just fun and unique and I've seen it so many times. An easy watch if you want to watch something diferent from the normal type of movies. Try not to view it as the standard movie structure, its more a wacky, graphic novel style. I love introducing people to this movie who haven't seen it. I just vibe with the style of it. You really get the graphic novel feel that this was based on and its cool

  • @MontgomeryWenis

What's cool is they actually used the same houses from the comics for Scott's childhood and current homes, which were themselves actually inspired by the real places shown in this movie. Really hilarious, honestly.

The lead stunt double that chris evans hands his skateboard, the one that first punches scott, is actually a pretty prolific stunt actor, coordinator, and director as well as voice actor. Hes the voice and stunt actor of Dante from Devil may cry, voice of ken masters from street fighter. He performed the stunts for the live action references for resident evil games as chris redfield. He also did the some of the stunt work in this movie included some scenes where he filled in for micheal cera as scott himself.

If you noticed every ex does something that coincides with their number, like Patel covers 1 eye cuz he is ex number 1, Scott wore a shirt with Zero to symbolize he isn’t an evil ex, and the fantastic four 1/2 shirt Scott wore was after Roxy (ex number 4) cuz Ramona said that he was an evil ex waiting to happen so he was going to the dark side a little bit.
