    Thanks Paul, great video! I love the throwback to Pete's shop; I miss those days! I started using clear nail polish on the wire holes instead of liquid electric tape, as it makes less mess and you can still see the wire colors. I feel like when you use the Liquid stuff it gets on your hands and you pretty much need a Dermatologist to remove it.😂

    IF you did swap the sensor grounds-- and there was a future issue, wouldn't the computer give a code for the wrong thing? Is there not a sensor/ pid monitoring the sensor grounds on the computer? Or does it only monitor the signal side? and If so, why does the ground have to return to the computer at all? Why doesn't it just use a common local ground?

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  Год назад +1

      Good question. The ECM monitors the signal wire but it is compared to the sensor ground. And since they are both sensor grounds, the noise level will also be very similar if not identical.
      The reason sensor grounds go to the board is the help eliminate noise. You will have noise on a signal wire but this same noise is also on the sensor ground, so it cancels the noise. Think of it as your voltmeter.
      But yes, great questions again and this is why I hesitated and did my research, I needed to know.

  • @codo7
    @codo7 Год назад +1

    Thank you, Paul. I have considered first cleaning the wire insulation with electrical cleaner/solvent (the spray can type) and marking the wire somehow where I pierce it. I know it doesn't matter how small the pierce is; oxygen enters at even the molecular level and any contact between copper and oxygen oxidizes. Also, it's true that the smaller the hole the slower the oxidizing and that some locations on a vehicle must render the process really slow, so if contact is limited to molecular level and air flow is nil... I wish non-stick really thin vinyl tape was available. I worked in a Land Rover aftermarket shop once; somehow there was access to that; some European OEM used it to wrap harnesses. Even with no stickum on the tape it stayed wrapped. Then, you could just doctor the pinhole with dielectric grease (It is meant to insulate, no?) and wrap a few turns of that thin vinyl over to cover it. Problem solved without solvents and glues.

    Great video. I will also say that having an outside cat is no guarantee that you won't have rodent damage. About two years ago my 2014 Mustang GT had some wires chewed through under the hood and we had quite a few outside cats at that time. There were quite a few cat prints under the hood so I don't know if a cat was chasing a rodent up in there or the cat actually chewed the wires.

    Brilliant, as always!
    Regarding the whole crimp vs. solder thing, I used to be 100% onboard with marine grade crimp connectors, but in September of 2022, I went to work for a new company that specializes in diagnostics and post-repair validation and calibration of accident vehicles. A few months back, I had a 2023 RAM 3500 that devoured a fencepost, straight through the wheel well, right through three 80+ pin bulk connectors (Engine main harness, transmission main harness, interior main harness), and into the cabin.
    "Okay, so just replace the harnesses," I hear your say. I would agree! Insurance, and the shop, did not. Pull the cab, pull the dash, re-run three main harnesses; it's a huge labor cost. The alternative was to buy new harnesses, and use the intact bulk connectors to splice into the existing harnesses. 300+ wires, I wasn't about to use crimp connectors! We joked about it, calling it a "harness tumor." LOL
    As it was, feathering the soldered splices along as much of the harnesses as I could, space got tight.
    I still use those wonderful crimp connectors quite often on smaller repairs, though! Super-useful, and real time savers! Worth noting though, that some insurance companies will not accept anything other than a solder and heat-shrink repair.

    • @hotrodpaully1
      @hotrodpaully1 Год назад

      I would think the labor bill to patch that many wires would have easily paid for the price of a new harness. But then again when I think about it some dealers charge stupid prices for harnesses. There been many times I been on the phone with a dealer and asked them if that part had gold in it .

    • @ScannerDanner

      I think we need to stop talking about charging for "time" but I understand needing some type of gauge by which to measure. It took me 5 minutes to ID that problem, and being paid by time says my expertise isn't worth very much. Make sense?
      I think the diag and repair for this should be at least $300? But it depends on your market and where you live.

    On broken/damaged sensor ground wires, do you always have to connect back to a sensor ground or can you go to a battery ground? Just curious.
    I always hated those type of wire strippers as you always have to have a long enough wires to reach the stripping area and in a machine or an auto there
    is always those few shorty's to make it difficult. Great video Paul and Caleb thanks so much.

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  Год назад

      You definitely want to use sensor ground, not battery ground. It is for noise reasons.
      But, I have had bad computer circuit boards on one leg of a sensor ground circuit where I've used a battery ground to get the car back on the road. It's not ideal, but in that case who cares, it needed a computer and there wasn't one available and it got the car back on the road.

      @@ScannerDanner I'll add to that, besides noise, while cranking and/or vehicles loads turn on and off the grounding differential will change from battery to the engine, body and ecm. while it may only be milivolts most of the time, that's still critical on low voltage sensor circuits. also large loads of cranking, fans, pumps, abs and other electrical things(steering/brakes) could possibly make the total imbalance multiple volts and the computer will see all that, as it and the sensor doesn't know any difference or may have dropouts.

I checked both sides since there are 2 cats but no apparent clog. I ran cat cleaner as well. The truck runs fine after leaving the hesitation zone in the upper gears. I do have a scope and checked the square wave of the MAF. I do see a bit of noise on the waveform. I checked all grounds as far as I could find. I even went as far as to run without the altenator to see if I might have bad rectifiers.. still spikey and noisy thus my decision to replace coil and ICM. Fuel pump amps is 6amp and fuel pressure was normal I believe, can’t remember the psi off hand. Ran it with the guage hooked up and no dips or peaks in pressure. I was leaning on weak pump regulator or clogged strainer but it doesn’t seem to point in that direction. I was thinking of pulling computer and inspecting the board for cold joints or bad capacitors if that is possible. (The hesitation is on flat or level roads..never on a down slope)
