as a cheap alternative to the smoke machine, use a fat cigar and a rubber glove over a round part of the suspected pipe system. then blow lots of smoke in till the glove starts to expand and become inflated then squeeze the glove which will force pressurised smoke out of any weakness/leaks if not already leaking out of. Works great!

Just replaced my EGR valve and tube assembly this morning and resolved my issues. Funny thing is is that your video popped up in my video feed after i did the repair haha.
Usually a intake gasket leak leans out only a few cylinders. One can pin down by cylinder efficiency test and or smoke test intake manifold and see what comes out of crankcase. Aluminum intake and heads expand and will seal up only if a piece of the gasket didn't come off from vacuum. Brake vacuum booster also common issue on older stuff. Excellent show. Thanks.
Most DIYers won't have access to a smoke machine, but that WAS a quick way of finding the leak ! I assume you always verify your repairs, something I am not certain all shops do.
I found a couple of home made smoke machines on RUclips. The cheapest and simplest was a plastic peanut butter with a couple layers of aluminum foil in the bottom, a low pressure air inlet and a smoke out let. Light one piece of charcoal and place it in the bottom. Add some shredded cardboard and screw on the lid.
I have a 2001 Chevrolet S-10 4.3L, and it doesn't go into closed loop until around 140* F, which is normal for these vehicles. Mine usually takes around 5 -10 minutes or so of idling to achieve this temp; even less if the vehicle is driven. Maybe only 5 minutes or so when I drive it, of course, depending on ambient air temps. Great video as always!! Really appreciate it!!
Nice diagnosis as usual. Can't live w/o a smoke machine nowadays in a shop environment...saves so much time hunting down leaks. Should have another lifetime SMA customer or at least another to spread the word!
South Main Auto Repair I can't figure it out either especially how another shop can shoot at a car with a parts cannon, not fix the car and then charge the customer & ship it and the customer pays it. I can't do that...
Had the same problem recently on my 4.8. Bought it cheap because it ran like crap and the guy thought the intake manifold gasket was leaking. The EGR to intake tube was cracked pretty severely. Slammed a Dorman (!) EGR tube in there and it runs like a champ now.

It is cool that he has made a good name for himself. Frustrating for me as I cannot find a SMA type shop in my area. Seems to be the motto around here is Guess not Test. and if you try to get them to own their mistake you get some run-around. Dr. O is a stand up guy!

Hey Eric. Not sure if you see these comments or not but if you do maybe you could help me out. I have a intermittent issue with my truck and no other shop it's been to can figure it out. 2002 Chevy Silverado 2500 6.0 It started awhile back. At least 4 months now. When the truck hasnt been running for awhile and you start it, it runs fine for about a minute or two and then begins to surge in idle and has no power what so ever. As you drive for a few minutes the power is restored and it drives as normal. If you shut the truck off and start it right back up it will drive fine. It only does it when it's been sitting for over night and not all the time. The only code it throws is a random misfire code p0300 and when it clears up the engine light goes out. I've checked for vacuum leaks and got nothing so far. After seeing the video when you explained fuel trims I checked that. My short term fuel trim on one of the banks was -31. The other bank was normal. When the truck starts driving normal again the fuel trim returns to normal. Every shop I take it to they say it's not acting up for them. (Sometimes it goes a awhile with out doing it) now it seems to be getting worse. My scanner is only one of those cheap actron ones so it doesn't do everything just the basics. I've watched so many of your videos and I feel like I am close just need some help. If you have any suggestions I would really appreciate it. Brad

Great info I’m having this exact same problem on my 5.3 vortec … fuel trim and 43, 44 on both bank and lean code . Should I check this and the intake manifold ?
Im getting bad sputtering without any check engine light and no codes.... after I drove for about 30 minutes, let sit overnight started it and no sputtering but smells lean....? Its on a 2001 2500 4x4 8.1L chevy Suburban ..... any suggestions? The way that the short term trim went to -10 and held there, and it jumped out of closed loop, suggests to me that it's a software routine to protect the engine from sudden unexpected operation. I don't know if the -10 short term adjustment was used during the second open loop period, but it seems likely. The behavior looks a lot to me like an intentional routine, maybe to give the O2 sensors time to heat up more.
I just did the same job on my '99 back in Sep. That stainless steel tubing is a very poor grade to corrode like that. It cost a lot more than it looks. Good work!
Sent you another 10 bucks, your comment about hard starting after refueling may just be the ticket for a friends' Traverse. Gonna check his Purge Valve Solenoid when he returns from Europe. Thanks for the excellent videos.
I didn't really catch that part, he did say that they will cause both rich and then lean conditions though. Just be sure to try and blow thru the new one as they often come from the factory already stuck open -- just because it's new doesn't mean it works these days. Cadillac forum had one guy with four new ones before he thought to pucker up and blow thru them, and all were open. Refueling loads the canister with fumes so it's hard to start and when it does finally, the engine revs up out of control so severely that many shut it off, just to repeat this episode several times whenever they fuel up.

I have a 2000 gmc single cab short box 4x4 and it starts rough cold and warm spark plugs and wire have been changed fuel ejectors have Been checked and are good I don't what else would be wrong
I need to get me one of them smoke machines! I never would've found that one, I don't think. Just had a '00 Taurus here, 3.0 DOHC, with the exact codes. I did the ScannerDanner water test, and could hear it getting sucked into the upper intake manifold gasket. The P0300 then changed to a P0305 as it warmed up. Ran real rough cold, and the freeze frame temp was 64° - was confident that was the issue. Ended up doing the lower manifold gaskets too, and the #2 & #3 coil packs, since I had just changed the #1 this summer for a misfire. Checked out the fuel trims afterward, remembering you mentioning that in one of your vids, and they came right down! Was a happy day for me! Things don't normally go that smooth around here, lol. I owe you and ScannerDanner ALOT of beer. ;)

As I watch your videos, I like to try and guess what the problem is before you figure it out. My batting average is not too good. I've been keeping my own cars running since I got my driver's license in 1969. I currently have four GM cars ('96 Impala SS, '03 Corvette, '88 Corvette, '88 Trans AM). As you can guess, they keep me busy!
Nice work Eric! I was wondering if you could hear that vac leak with your ear? I like to use stethoscope before busting out the smoker. Water bottle sprayer is another efficient method...sometimes ;)
It was hard to hear it over the mechanical noise of a GM V8 haha but yeah, the garden hose could have found this one. Of course they launched a stage 5 parts misled at it first! The first shop made twice as much as I did and the sad part is the customers will keep going back there :) SMH.

I fixed a GM trouble code p0305 ....cid # 5 ..had good compress...new plug/wire didn't help ... change only one injector , not the whole spider...it can be done... runs like a champ now...
Got a 99 5.7 p03000 p03006. Only after I hit 51mph. Replaced plugs wires cap rotor. Stft on bank 2 it -6.1 roughly. Any help would be great. Even while misfiring no drivability issues.
I bought a 2007 Sierra 5.3 from a Chevy dealership. Now I am backfiring and stalling all the time. The dealership said they can't find the problem. Any ideas? I had throttle body and fuel system checked and cleaned.
If you were to spray carb cleaner near the hole in the EGR tube, would you be able to notice a change in rpm? Having similar misfire problems with my 2001 Silverado 5.3L and tried spraying carb cleaner around the intake gasket and don’t notice an rpm change. Thanks!!
2004 tahoe 5.3. Idle long term trims are -7 to -12 on both banks. Both banks are inline with each other on the readings. While driving down the freeway they are both 12 and 20 when floored. What is this? O2s are new
Question for you sir. I have a 2000 chevy silverado 1500 4.3 V6 two wheel drive. I had a issue with my truck with P300,P301. I went ahead and changed the following. Distributor cap and rotor. Spark plugs Spark plug wires Camshaft sensor Knock sensor O2 sensor both up and down stream Fuel injector spider assembly Fuel pump Fuel filter Truck is still shooting a P300 code and truck while at a stand still it shakes and as I drive it around the block the check engine light starts blinking. At this point I don't know which direction to go anymore on it and I'm looking to see if you would know what else it can be I had a guy run the machine on it and it said bank one and bank 4 are still misfiring I was told to change the knock sensor and check the Cadillac converter. Changed the knock but still did nothing. Let me know what you think it can be or what else I can check

Excellent method,+ video. do not have a smoke machine, I found a fairly cheap electronic stethysope. ( can't spell ) It works much better than the old cheap doctor style automotive versions that do a number on your ear drum's. The better one has full size ear muff's. Very load volumn, has help find some very difficult leaks. Good work keep going.

I have never heard of a smoke test for vacuum leaks. I watched this video because I'm having trouble with my 1991 gmc sierra 1500. Nox are too high at both 15 mph and 25 mph, but lower at the 25 mph test. Also truck will die at idle after idling a few minutes, sometimes at a stoplight.
Hi I am a new subscriber and I am enjoying your thought process and use of tools to logically troubleshoot problems. I am not a mechanic, do not have a shop and am retired. I do look forward to viewing your videos and want to thank you for taking the time to do them, you have become one of my favorite channels to watch. If you have covered this before, if so forgive me for asking, but how do you keep track of all the hardware and parts while waiting for parts and machine shop work and not lose anything? When I work on something, stuff gets dropped, misplaced or I forget where or how it goes back together.
Why is there only one bolt where the tube connects to the intake manifold? There are two holes on the mounting plate, but only one on the manifold to screw into. There is no way to firmly secure the bottom part of the hose to the intake manifold. See 13:50 in your video. They probably put that silicone on the bottom part of the plate in order to seal it up at the manifold.
I have a 2008 Tahoe hybrid. The dealer spent maybe 40 minutes in the back and came back telling me my P0300 meant I needed a new engine and quoted me 10k! I have the exact same problems. P0300 when I bought it (as-is from an online dealer... yes, an idiot move) but it changed to p0305 after I changed all spark plugs. Changed wires and coil pack on cylinder 5 and problem has gotten worse over time. I now get violent sputtering when accelerating from a stop and the check engine light flashes constantly. When in reverse it won't go, then suddenly jerks backwards after letting it go by itself. My finances are in shambles and I wish I knew more about cars so I didn't get ripped off like this
You can't set a lean code with a cold engine the pcm won't test a cold engine for a lean condition. You have to be at a steady state cruise for a minimun amount of time with no tps variation. The engine coolant temp has to have risen 40 degrees from engine start prior to test etc...etc...
I got 2012 silverado 5.3 i getting a p0300 code only truck running poorly muilt random misfire i change out plugs wires coils no luck what thino could be problem ?
Very nice diagnosis, professional as always. I have similar issue with my GM SUV that does the same thing. Code is PO 0300. Changed intake manifold gasket, mass air flow sensor, spark plus and wires, and fuel pump. Still the same problem! what is interesting is that the check engine light flashes only after a speed of 30mpg, when below it stops flashing! Any thought for diagnosis or help, please. and thank you
I got a 98 Chevy z71 it has a problem not shifting into over drive and when u get down on it it falls flat in its face like it's starting out in thrid gear what do u think it could be possiblely any help would be appreciated replaced the throttle position sencer did alright for a bit then the problem came back

I did my smoke test it was coming out of the egr pipe that goes into the intake do you think it's my o ring gasket or you said sometimes the sleeve cracks? I have a 2001 5.3 Silverado. Any advice for me I got a new o ring should I replace the o ring or get a whole new egr pipe?

Need help, my 2008 chevy avalanche has that 0300 and hesitated a little, hard to fuel but replaced the purge solenoid and that did it, still has the 0300 code plus the hesitation, definitely could hear a whistling noise on the right side of the engine
Can you recommend a decently priced scan tool for at home mechanics. My SnapOn scanner just isnt cutting it anymore with all the computers in these new cars.

1. Purge solenoid 2. Vacume leak smoke test, Fuel pressure regulator hose to pressurize system 3. EGR valve leak 4. Intake tube broke 5. Exhaust manifold 6. Air intake manifold leak replace seal, 7. Replace injector electrical harness 8. Throttle body seal. Check cam shaft sensor and crankshaft sensor. Check 02 data oxygen sensor.

I dunno they always tend to migrate back to the parts changer shops for some reason I will never understand.

I made a smoke machine with my son's nebulizer and a cigar in a container with a lid and hose. Worked perfectly and was an easy build.
Nice vid, I'm working on my 5.3 and it does that rough idle shit in the morning but only on cold days. Changing the intake gaskets this weekend.

I didn't really catch that part, he did say that they will cause both rich and then lean conditions though. Just be sure to try and blow thru the new one as they often come from the factory already stuck open -- just because it's new doesn't mean it works these days. Cadillac forum had one guy with four new ones before he thought to pucker up and blow thru them, and all were open. Refueling loads the canister with fumes so it's hard to start and when it does finally, the engine revs up out of control so severely that many shut it off, just to repeat this episode several times whenever they fuel up.

I have a 2000 gmc single cab short box 4x4 and it starts rough cold and warm spark plugs and wire have been changed fuel ejectors have Been checked and are good I don't what else would be wrong

Just had a '00 Taurus here, 3.0 DOHC, with the exact codes. I did the ScannerDanner water test, and could hear it getting sucked into the upper intake manifold gasket. The P0300 then changed to a P0305 as it warmed up. Ran real rough cold, and the freeze frame temp was 64° - was confident that was the issue. Ended up doing the lower manifold gaskets too, and the #2 & #3 coil packs, since I had just changed the #1 this summer for a misfire. Checked out the fuel trims afterward, remembering you mentioning that in one of your vids, and they came right down! Was a happy day for me! Things don't normally go that smooth around here, lol.

As I watch your videos, I like to try and guess what the problem is before you figure it out. My batting average is not too good. I've been keeping my own cars running since I got my driver's license in 1969. I currently have four GM cars ('96 Impala SS, '03 Corvette, '88 Corvette, '88 Trans AM). As you can guess, they keep me busy!
Nice work Eric! I was wondering if you could hear that vac leak with your ear? I like to use stethoscope before busting out the smoker. Water bottle sprayer is another efficient method...sometimes ;)

It was hard to hear it over the mechanical noise of a GM V8 haha but yeah, the garden hose could have found this one. Of course they launched a stage 5 parts misled at it first! The first shop made twice as much as I did and the sad part is the customers will keep going back there :) SMH.

I fixed a GM trouble code p0305 ....cid # 5 ..had good compress...new plug/wire didn't help ... change only one injector , not the whole spider...it can be done... runs like a champ now...

Got a 99 5.7 p03000 p03006. Only after I hit 51mph. Replaced plugs wires cap rotor. Stft on bank 2 it -6.1 roughly. Any help would be great. Even while misfiring no drivability issues.
I bought a 2007 Sierra 5.3 from a Chevy dealership. Now I am backfiring and stalling all the time. The dealership said they can't find the problem. Any ideas? I had throttle body and fuel system checked and cleaned.
If you were to spray carb cleaner near the hole in the EGR tube, would you be able to notice a change in rpm?
Having similar misfire problems with my 2001 Silverado 5.3L and tried spraying carb cleaner around the intake gasket and don’t notice an rpm change.

2004 tahoe 5.3. Idle long term trims are -7 to -12 on both banks. Both banks are inline with each other on the readings. While driving down the freeway they are both 12 and 20 when floored. What is this? O2s are new

Question for you sir. I have a 2000 chevy silverado 1500 4.3 V6 two wheel drive. I had a issue with my truck with P300,P301. I went ahead and changed the following.
Distributor cap and rotor.
Spark plugs
Spark plug wires
Camshaft sensor
Knock sensor
O2 sensor both up and down stream
Fuel injector spider assembly
Fuel pump
Fuel filter
Truck is still shooting a P300 code and truck while at a stand still it shakes and as I drive it around the block the check engine light starts blinking. At this point I don't know which direction to go anymore on it and I'm looking to see if you would know what else it can be
I had a guy run the machine on it and it said bank one and bank 4 are still misfiring
I was told to change the knock sensor and check the Cadillac converter. Changed the knock but still did nothing. Let me know what you think it can be or what else I can check
hey DR.o..u know if it was a 3 or 4 wire o2..4 wire o2's have to be min.1200 deg.f before they will start reading..just a thought...also on a sidenote.At 20:49 i seen the longterms go back to +25..or do i need to go see a shrink?
Excellent method,+ video. do not have a smoke machine, I found a fairly cheap electronic stethysope. ( can't spell ) It works much better than the old cheap doctor style automotive versions that do a number on your ear drum's. The better one has full size ear muff's. Very load volumn, has help find some very difficult leaks. Good work keep going.

I have never heard of a smoke test for vacuum leaks. I watched this video because I'm having trouble with my 1991 gmc sierra 1500. Nox are too high at both 15 mph and 25 mph, but lower at the 25 mph test. Also truck will die at idle after idling a few minutes, sometimes at a stoplight.
Did it have a plastic melting smell and did you smell any gas?

Hi I am a new subscriber and I am enjoying your thought process and use of tools to logically troubleshoot problems. I am not a mechanic, do not have a shop and am retired. I do look forward to viewing your videos and want to thank you for taking the time to do them, you have become one of my favorite channels to watch. If you have covered this before, if so forgive me for asking, but how do you keep track of all the hardware and parts while waiting for parts and machine shop work and not lose anything? When I work on something, stuff gets dropped, misplaced or I forget where or how it goes back together.
Why is there only one bolt where the tube connects to the intake manifold? There are two holes on the mounting plate, but only one on the manifold to screw into. There is no way to firmly secure the bottom part of the hose to the intake manifold. See 13:50 in your video. They probably put that silicone on the bottom part of the plate in order to seal it up at the manifold.
I have a 2008 Tahoe hybrid. The dealer spent maybe 40 minutes in the back and came back telling me my P0300 meant I needed a new engine and quoted me 10k! I have the exact same problems. P0300 when I bought it (as-is from an online dealer... yes, an idiot move) but it changed to p0305 after I changed all spark plugs. Changed wires and coil pack on cylinder 5 and problem has gotten worse over time. I now get violent sputtering when accelerating from a stop and the check engine light flashes constantly. When in reverse it won't go, then suddenly jerks backwards after letting it go by itself. My finances are in shambles and I wish I knew more about cars so I didn't get ripped off like this
You can't set a lean code with a cold engine the pcm won't test a cold engine for a lean condition. You have to be at a steady state cruise for a minimun amount of time with no tps variation. The engine coolant temp has to have risen 40 degrees from engine start prior to test etc...etc...

Very nice diagnosis, professional as always. I have similar issue with my GM SUV that does the same thing. Code is PO 0300. Changed intake manifold gasket, mass air flow sensor, spark plus and wires, and fuel pump. Still the same problem! what is interesting is that the check engine light flashes only after a speed of 30mpg, when below it stops flashing! Any thought for diagnosis or help, please. and thank you
Do a crank relearn on it and see if that takes care of it. I assume it has no misfires.

I got a 98 Chevy z71 it has a problem not shifting into over drive and when u get down on it it falls flat in its face like it's starting out in thrid gear what do u think it could be possiblely any help would be appreciated replaced the throttle position sencer did alright for a bit then the problem came back
You can switch from open to closed look in special functions.
I have a 96 chevrolet silverado 5.7. I'm getting gas only on the drivers side. unplugged the cap on the spyder injector and waited a few then plugged it back in still no gas on the plugs on the passenger side. I even disconnected battery. Got any ideals

I did my smoke test it was coming out of the egr pipe that goes into the intake do you think it's my o ring gasket or you said sometimes the sleeve cracks? I have a 2001 5.3 Silverado. Any advice for me I got a new o ring should I replace the o ring or get a whole new egr pipe?

Need help, my 2008 chevy avalanche has that 0300 and hesitated a little, hard to fuel but replaced the purge solenoid and that did it, still has the 0300 code plus the hesitation, definitely could hear a whistling noise on the right side of the engine
Can you recommend a decently priced scan tool for at home mechanics. My SnapOn scanner just isnt cutting it anymore with all the computers in these new cars.
