  • In today's video we take a look at a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with a 5.3l V8 engine. The customer complaint is that the check engine light is on and the motor is running very rough. Using a scan tool we find multiple trouble codes for misfires, mass air flow sensor and oxygen sensors. We are also told that this truck had been involved in an accident and had a pretty major collision. Follow along as I take you step by step through the diagnostic procedure and see if we can fix this truck!

    Retired GM tech here. Retired in 2019 after about 40 years , most of it drivability and electrical. Been through this type of battle many times. I send my respect to this tech as this is so difficult under constant pressure of more than one problem at a time, keeping the customer happy, trying to stay ahead of the other vehicles to fix, and trying to be as good as Perry Mason on finding all the bad guys. Very tough job and mostly under appreciated. No wonder nobody wants to go through this type of work as a job anymore. Well done! :)

Electronics is my weak side but thanks to videos like this I find my self prepared to go into electronic diagnosis! Eric, I don't know why you were apologizing for not videoing the entire process. What you did was terrific and really it identified what can happen when a person simply starts replacing parts without diagnosing the concern. You had two wiring issues and a self-inflicted wound by the customer. Three things wrong with this truck but your diagnostic process solved them and kudos to you. Loved every minute of this video.

    You did a excellent job on this video. I am a shade tree mechanic (since the 60's) and try to keep up with automotive changes. You do a A+ job trouble shooting. One ting I have learned as a electrical technician for over 40 years. Is to do the tug test most of the time when working near connectors. Seeing that wiring harness, that would be the first thing before I even pierced the wires. Saved me a lot of time finding the problem(s)

    I’ve watched lots of videos on vehicle repair and I’ve been a mechanic for 10 years so I can relate. This is by far the best video on an electrical issue I’ve seen. Someone should promote this man for these type issues and im sure they will. Thanks very much for a very good and useful explanation of checking an electrical issue. I would like to see a video on the tools needed and where to get them for testing electrical issues. Some people don’t understand the importance of where you can put a test light and where you need the probes and what the result of voltage to a sensor or the ecm can do. Thanks very much for an excellent video!

    Man, thank you so much for providing these videos for us. This type of deep dive, watching the whole diagnostic/repair process while you explain the motivation and logic behind each step, is like having an apprenticeship under a master mechanic. I learn more from the methodology and just watching you work through the processes than any books or even hands-on training I've received over the years. You've reminded me to think in an engineering mindset when working on vehicles, and my skills and ability to track down problems has improved so much more by watching your videos than it did through my entire time getting my certifications or during on the job training. It's an invaluable resource, and you're an incredible asset to the community for the insight and knowledge that you provided. I can't thank you enough personally, and also on behalf of my customers who have finally gotten fixes for their problems after many other techs failing to properly assess the problems. They benefitted from the information I've gotten from you, and probably saved themselves thousands in additional trips to the shop.

    Top notch skills, bro! I learned a lot of must do diagnostic procedure here. I had the same broken internally wire harness issue in the wife's GMC envoy tailgate. The feed for wiper motor was broken at the joint where it passes from door to roofline. I sat inside the back and brought door down to investigate, heard wiper go live, wiggled wires, and sure enough, lost power. Got it all fixed. I had can signal, good ground, but no power. Too easy.

    Great video Eric! I hope they paid you well for your time. Sometimes customers are stingy when it comes to pay the last mechanic that undid the damage of the last mechanic and finally fixed the problem. I would have charged him well over ten hours. And I'm raising my rates cuz of inflation. Spread connectors, bad parts. And now the catalytic converter was burned and probably needs replacing. One thing is that the intake sensor is a different circuit than the MAF sensor. It was reading -40 and I don't know how the 12 volt feed to the MAF fixed it. Oh well. It's great that you didn't give up. I quit when a customer says that they don't want to spend more money fixing the vehicle.

  • @scottyV1000
    @scottyV1000 Год назад +1

    Good job sticking with it and not just throwing parts at the problem. Most people would have just replaced the MAF sensor and that wouldn’t have fixed the problem. As soon as you said the fuel mapping was screwed up I thought O2 sensors though. It also shows how much other stuff can get messed up in an accident besides sheet metal.

    I saw on the live data that the ECT was reading -40F before fixing the MAF wire. After the repair that fixed the ECT reading as well. Nice job on the repairs. I know what you mean when you talk about working on vehicles when someone else has already tried to fix it. Sometimes it's just better if they were to leave it alone and untouched before it comes to you for repair.

    GREAT JOB!! Deep dive videos like this are exactly what we all want to see. I have been struggling with my 2015 gmc sierra running rough and throwing codes. I have been diving deep into RUclips and the internet to diagnose my potential problems and throwing $$$$$$$ at parts for this $54,000 pile of junk. Most videos don’t give a full run down from start to finish, which causes me to spend more money and time on parts. This video helped me to understand a more complete picture of all the operations happening ALL AT ONCE, that are required to make my vehicle run smooth. And with a more complete understanding I am able to spend less money throwing parts at a problem and can make more informed discussions on my next step(s). The blue collar/ Mr.fixit guys like myself REALLY appreciate YOU!! Thank you sir!

    Man that was great. I have had so many nightmare cars like that. You keep finding home runs thinking it’s over and you get punched. I’m surprised there was no codes for the coils. That would have been helpful. When I poke a wire I always put a dab of liquid electrical tape on it. The wires aways seem to corrode after time. The easiest way to find them is just to open harness and start pulling on the wires. As you seen it didn’t take much to snap it. Love your videos. Great way to help keep me sharp.

    First of all I have to thank you for such a great and educational video And also for your explanation on the numerous of drawbacks of this case ,When I was listening to you it was like somebody describing my difficulties what I wasn't able to say , I'm not native in English and not sure to explain what exactly is in my mind. My major job is working on Chinese Brand, you have no idea what a horrible thing I'm talking about .Always I'm dealing with the issue like your case ,most of the time the main issue is to convince and fully understand the customer about labor time and all the steps that is needed to repair or diagnose the whole part of the car that is relevant the main problem of vehicle.
    BTW thank you again for your effort to make videos like this.
    warm greeting from iran.

    Just found your Chanel and subscribed. This job is one that really tests a techs diagnostic skills and weeds out those that know what to do and those that change parts. I hope you finished by running the J2 wire inside the rubber boot before taping everything back together. Otherwise Excellent repair.

    You found the wire problem. Then you had to find the customer.......mistake. Fortunately the old parts were available. I've seen times when they weren't available, but I had another vehicle close by that I used as a one time swap tronics. Ya it worked.
    Anyway, GREAT VIDEO! I've seen "some" of that (on fleet vehicles) after an accident. It can be "very" frustrating! Keep up the Great Work!
