She's definitely not the first female to do it in metal but she is the one most responsible for popularizing the concept.
When I saw your avatar, it sent chills down the spine, it's exactly the same, as a t-shirt of mine
Also, Lori Bravo
Sabina Classen would be one of the first doing Thrash Metal.
@@horzagiar88 Angela are not Thrash Metal Singer and doesn't even use the same, tone AND technic as Sabina did.
@@mahlemut3611 It was about early women doing harsh vocals. It wasn't about their style or subgenre.
Tell us who was then. And I'll tell you why you're wrong.
I miss Angela. She was raw power
She sure was, but Alissa is live a monstrous powerhouse as well
@@warbeast7980 they couldn't have found a better replacement for Angela than Alissa.
@@warbeast7980 no
@@maulaff8473 clearly not the best, just what they could find since now the band seems like generic metalcore
What happened to Angela the lead singer of arch enemy?
Angela now manages Arch Enemy. She's also personal manager to her successor, Canadian Alissa White-Gluz. Another band Angela manages is Amaranthe. She came outcof retirement to join them on their single "Do Or Die" earlier this year.
Thx for new infos 😊
She was the manager long before she retired. She simply remained on after she stopped performing.
Yes, she is our viking queen!
She vegan.
@@jesperjuhl6494 No one. It was a joke and fact at the same time bro
Welcome to the wonderful world of Melodic Death Metal!
OMG!!!! I honestly wasn’t expecting that, thank you so much for reacting to my request! The kids and I were watching and when they heard my name, they go “HEY THATS YOUR NAME PAPA!”, glad you enjoyed it, stay safe and healthy and thanks again so much, this really did make my day!
Thanks for putting him onto Angela, she really is an amazingly talented woman and Arch Enemy were always more than a one trick pony of metal. Very musical in their approach and really deserved much more recognition.
It's really nice to share this with someone who has never seen this and see that discovery happen on camera right in front of your eyes, you did metal and metal heads proud \\m//
That was a really good request and I thank you for this :D
Tho I freaking love BABYMETAL, one of my favorite band of all time, but I have no idea why you mentionned them while talking about women screamers xD BABYMETAL has some hella heavy songs, but singing wise appart from the growling backing tracks it's all clean pop singing so.. x)
Her stance and her stage presence and her looks in this performance is just so... grounded, powerful and commanding. It's really a pleasure to watch.
what I love about Angela Gossow is that she makes an entire crowd pumped up, her energy is unlike any other female vocalist in rock/metal. This is why Angela is my top 3 vocalists/performer of all time.
You can tell when Ken reviews videos from genres outside of what he's normally used to, but I absolutely love how curious of a mind he has for studying vocalists from any genre (even genres outside of what he listens to) and just how respectful he is too.
You can tell how interested he is for his aptitude for learning by how analytical he is.
Just gotta say, love your videos Ken!!!!
Ow yes, arch enemy with Angela
I was lucky enough to have seen them live once from the front rows, just completely blown away by her stage presence, another great song with her is I am legend-out for blood
I'm always amazed at how many metalheads like classical music but also that there are enough classical music lovers who at least appreciate metal. I know that neither the metalheads nor the classical music lovers will declare the other music genre as their new love, but it seems to me that there is much more understanding than I used to expect.
I was lucky enough to see Angela Gossow live and she was great. She was a tornado, pure energy. The whole concert was like a spin cycle in the washing machine. Unbelievable and unforgettable.
That's melodic death metal for you. Arch Enemy has been one of my favorites since I was a teenager.
Why does everyone forget about Kittie?! They were doing growls and clean vocals back in the very early 2000s. All female band from Canada
Yes, my thoughts exactly.
There was also Astarte, an all-female black metal band from Greece formed in the mid-90s.
I bought their first album. I was in 4th grade 😂
I mean, to be fair, Angela Gossow's first Arch Enemy album was Wages of Sin in 2001 and started with Asmodina in 1991. Since Kittie's first album was in 2000, I guess we can say that they were operating in the spotlight around the same time. Difference is Angela Gossow only did death growls, where as Kittie were known to mix growls with alot of clean singing.
Hell yeah ! I'm always asking myself how ell known they are since I never see people mentioning them :O
She has amazing command of the stage
The running around is called a "mosh pit". It's intense, and really allows you to be part of the music, of the crowd, of the energy. It's insane, and amazing, and will leave you sore for days. It's one of the main reasons to go to a metal concert.
Angela is such a power house. From vocals to physical performance
Devin Townsend and Floor Jansen now!
Yes, my favorite male and female vocalists respectively, just the best
Indeed!

I really enjoy to finally see a reaction to Angela Gossow. I would have suggested "we will rise" from the same concert because it's linked with the awesome outro to the concert as well. I love Jinjer just as much as I love Arch Enemy but for me, Angela will always be the queen of metal because she brought the female growls to my attention and I obviously listened to them since they started.
That was awesome, thank you. She commands an audience like nobody else. Oh, and that was the first encore, btw, 14 songs in.
A req you'll certainly find interesting: WINTERSUN - Time (live @ Sonic Pump studios)
Arch Enemy came out in 95 and blow up. I think it was 2001 when the original front man was replaced with Angela I think I have her name wrong. After that they exploded on the seen. Not only did she growl like beast but it was so fucking powerful and clear which NO FEMALE FRONTWOMEN COULD DO. Kittie has never nor will ever be on Angela level
My God l love Angela Gossow. 😂. Angela said she winds herself up back stage until she feels like a fire breathing dragon. Then she hits the stage.
I am happy you enjoyed that song. She is amazing! And the band has some very interesting musicality. Good Job!
Angela is the Godmother of Metal she may have not started it but she perfected it and made it popular.
She was the best singer for arch enemy. Saw them live many times always amazing
I love this song for its guitars more than anything else. Arch Enemy writes fantastic guitar parts
Arch Enemy were the band that got me over the hump with harsh vocals. So good.
i missed old arch enemy days , there was a band called otep at that time , you should check shamaya's voice too ...
"Was"? Otep is still kicking ass, bro.
I'm sure I have an Otep album on CD lurking in a box in the garage now you've mentioned it. They were a pretty solid band 👌
@@Sithspit_Rogue yeah they are :V
Angela Gossow is the single greatest female vocalist in the history of metal music and its subgenres. I'd go so far as to say she is the single greatest vocalist period, male or female.
Alex Terrible has an interesting vocal technique, check out "Slaughter to Prevail - Demolisher"

@Noise Injection yeh to me u cant play it enough. Love it. My neighbours dont agree.
And now hear it again alone you n ur self and tell us how powerfully emotionally do u feel..! thank you all for keeping Angela still on the top, she deserves to remain there.
Angela is a legend and she is giving growling classes I heard.
Please react to Ghost Love Score by Nightwish live at Wacken 2013. The singer's name is Floor Jansen and the band is from Finland. You're gonna love this and I'm really curious about your thoughts!!
FFS, not another "omG, shEs SoOoO gOoOd" reaction video. It's getting old. The song is great, but the amount of RUclipsrs reviewing this is like cancer.
@@Mp57navy I'm perplexed by your hyperbole. It is nothing like cancer.
@@Mp57navy You know you can choose to not watch it, right?
@@Mp57navy nearly 1000 now and Floor herself did one!
I'd love to see you react to Devin Townsend. He's a great, underrated metal singer who has an amazing vocal range. A good place to start would be Kingdom (EMGtv live), it shows off his vocal talent and personality nicely. I'm sure you'd appreciate him! Back me up here guys!
this guy knows whats up
100% That SOLO though ;)
@@5thPhoenix Well, obviously depends who you ask and in what circles :) Just saying that even though I think he's a spectacular and versatile singer, his name rarely comes up when people talk about the best voices in metal (in my experience).
or Deadhead at the Prince Albert Hall omg that performance was breathtaking
I’d rather see someone react to Devin singing Why from the first quarantine show. That’s his best vocal performance on film.
that was metal, sir. i'm glad that you enjoy it... awesome melodic band lml
Your reactions are always informative and entertaining. I love the fact that you aren't afraid to step of of your comfort zone and explore. There are so many great vocalists out there.
Kittie was formed in 1996 and dropped their first studio album Spit, in 2000. They were an all female metal band, growls and all
Angela es mi cantante favorita, en 2012 la vi cantar en vivo y es impresionante!!!! 🖤
"Holy shitake mushrooms"
Oh I love this.
This is awesome. She's probably the best growler I've ever seen.
This made me LOL as growler is, where I'm from, a slang term for the female genitalia...
Angela will never be replaced..🤘😜🤘
If you want to know more about fry screaming and false chord growls you should take a look at Melissa Cross' work - she's a vocal coach who's taught the best of the best in the growl world.
Silverwing from the same concert in Japan is quite possibly the best vocal performance ever.
Arch Enemy with Shadows Fall, Dragonforce, Trivium and Machine Head in Brixton London 2007; that was a special night! Thank you for putting Angela up here!
Angela Gossow is a tiny powerhouse! only about 5'3, I think?
Angela is now the Manager of Arch Enemy she is the Liddel demon but now is Allissa The Singer by Arch Enemy
I've waited for this reaction for so long!!!
Kittie was an all female band from the 90's and early 2000's that did growls and clean vocals.
I had chills douwn my whole body from begining to end what a great Era of Arch Enemy
Angela is amazing. There are so many fantastic women in metal. Try Floor Jansen from Nightwish next. Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013 is a good start for a vocal coach 😁 Have fun...
DO IT NOW!

Tatiana from jinjer
I think their opening track Blood On Your Hands at that gig would have been even more fun for you watch.
Hahahahaha 😂
Her entrance 🤘🏽❤️
Yup Angela Gossow started it all before anyone else and you should check more of their stuff
For some more amazing Angela Gossow, check out 'Bloodstained Cross' [official]. It's so good. The riff is so melodic, and the energy is so intense and contagious.
You should try Floorgasm... It happens when one would listen to Floor Jansen (Nightwish). NIGHTWISH - Ghost Love Score (OFFICIAL LIVE) Wacken. You'll love it.!!!
I've seen her live in 2002 at Wâldrock, you would probably be surprised to see how small and tender she looks in real life.
Spiritbox videos. Courtney laplante is awesome. She has studio vocal performances as well. Highly recommended.
Enemy within..!!!! Same gig 🤘🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥🤘🏻
I'd love to see a reaction to Dir En Grey. The vocalist is crazy and has some amazing on stage moments.
Also, Dance of the Manatee by Fair to Midland live, vocalist hangs himself upside down from the roof above the audience.
You should react to 'obscure' by Dir en grey live at wacken, the vocals are quite unreal, something you don't see often
Man I love your channel, it’s fantastic 🤘🏻
You can Chek now THE AGONIST - THANK YOU PAIN (oficial video)
She is the actual Arch Enemy vocalist (Alissa White Gluss)
Angela Gossow BEST women growling frontman FOREVER !
and for sure Amott bros. as always unsurpassed!
the whole idea behind their approach is very straight forward... and it works great! a frontman in such HEAVY metal is not meant to be for a melody - that's the role of the guitar! at the same time, the main task of the frontman is to bring power and tension!
Archenemy best days!! Bring back angela
What you begin to notice is the jump from the feeling that you understood the technique to understanding there's still many things and varieties that you don't know. it actually happens to everyone for anything in life really.
I read once, that we tend to like things that resemble other ones we know. You can see it when people listen to metal or heavy electronic music or experimental for the first time, often it will sound like "noise" for them
Enough babbling.
I'd love to see you watch Devin Townsend - Kingdom (EMGtv) or Leprous - Contaminate Me Live at rockefeller
Both having great "classical" style (ehmm you know what I mean ) and growling style singing.
Angela joined Arch Enemy in 2000.
Otep also formed in 2000.
Check out Otep - Blood Pigs
She was inspired by the band Carcass. The main guitarist is from Carcass. Vocal stylings are similar.
I also highly recommend All Hail the Dead by Walls of Jericho. A little bit of a different female scream style.
Your face man 2:48 .... "Ok. This is power! " Lol 😂
i always love to see when somebody discovers a new aspect of something they love - your dive into the metal-regions has been really great to follow, and apart from your infectious enthusiasm you always manage to impart your knowledge - thank you! =) I know it has been proposed a hundred times over already, but i'm sure you'd get a kick out of the Wacken 2013 version of Ghost Love score by Nightwish - i'd really be interested in what you'd have to say from a professional point of view =) best wishes!
Arch Enemy also employs one of the finest shredders in the business, Micheal Amott, which....helps alot, not that Angela and Alyssa arnt both amazing
Really liked the video. Three points I would make. First, Angela seems to gain expression and pitch over other growlers through vowel mutation, at least as I hear it. Second, I have heard the growling over guitar melody referred to as the Arch Enemy trick; seems fair. Third, I have seen via video two performers who held an audience captive waiting with excitement for the performer to make a move: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl, and Angela Gossow in Japan 2008.
Please review her live in Tokyo at this concert performing "Ravenous" it is OUTRAGEOUS!!!! 😍
angela is a legend in heavy metal, she influenced a lot of the female vocalists and even male vocalists but i think her impact on female front women in extreme metal is bigger. I can almost guarantee that every female front woman doing extreme vocals will mention angela as an influence into their vocals, even though there was female front women before her in metal shes just had the biggesti impact.
Nightwish - Ghost Love Score official live @ Wacken 2013. Intresting music - check, something to comment on about the singer/singing - check, amazing musical rabbit hole to fall in - check.
I'm not sure it someone commented that, but the most amazing thing about this band is that their main songwriter, Michael Amott (the one with red hair, he writes majority of the music and half of the lyrics) is completely self-taught musician. I assume, he had some music theory lessons (but I cant be sure in that), but his guitar skills are completely self-developed by copying other musicians he loved back in his childhood.
While the other guitarist, Christopher Amott, his brother, actually attended a musical college and contributed a lot to their sound with his music knowledge. He left the band a couple of times saying that he was going to pursue other interests and other genres of music, while he still joins them onstage or on tour when they have any problem with guitarists, and sometimes as a guest musician. But even if he was going to play some different music, now he ended up being lead guitar player for another Swedish band playing the same genre, it's called Dark Tranquillity.
Som pluijmers would be the Queen of metal screams in my opinion. She has that drutal death metal/gutteral vocals on point
Want to be blown away by amazing vocals and perfect singing technique?
Devin Townsend!!!
Choose from there tracks:
Kingdom (live for EMG TV)
Deadhead (Live at Royal Albert Hall)
Or any other live performance
BtW who's this dimash?? 🤷🏼♂️
Devin Townsend - Deadhead (Royal Albert Hall)
And it's with Angela. Yesss ❤❤❤
I love her
Vanushka by the Japanese metal band Dir En Grey. It’s so layered, so emotionally heavy, and imo Kyos best vocal.
I love Angela Gossow and her charisma, I love Wages of Sin and Anthems of Rebellion. Seen Archn Enemy multiple times, it was fantastic! Seen them after Angela left, and I left the concert. However, Otep was before Angela.
I remember Arch Enemy kept Johan Liiva's replacement kind of on the down-low when she originally joined. She was crazy impressive back in the day. However, my favorite Arch Enemy is the Burning Bridges album with Johan.
4:02 "That would probably be an honour for most of us." 🤣🤘🤘🤘👍👍👍
Also, she’s very classically trainined👍
I subscribe, you should look up The Agonist, they have a female vocalist, she do the growl and opera singing. Their first signer is now the main one of Arch Enemy. Look it up you wont regret it.
Check out Loic Nottet sing Sia's "Chandelier". Would love to see your take. It's an amazing performance
She is Angela gossow ex vocal
Current vocal is Alissa gulz
Her vocal style is different current vocalist is also great
if you ever feel like delving deeper into various styles of growling i would recommend Cattle Decapitation - The Kingdom of Tyrants, now with that said there are two things, first i understand it might be considered quite heavy for a non metal listener and secondly the vocalist Travis Ryan is quite versatile with highs, lows and his unique style of 'pseudo cleans' (tho he doesn't refer to it as such)
this band probably made the best metal song ever in my opinion. My apocalypse. If you like the melody in this song then that is definately worth checking out.
Thorr's Hammer is one of the first bands to have a female vocalist with a death growl. The lead singer, Runhild Gammelsæter is a female from Norway who is currently a professional biologist and holds a Ph.D. in cell physiology. Here is their first recorded live show in Seattle, WA in 1995. ruclips.net/video/T87XMnzdvrs/видео.html
Ebonsight is the first female black metal band in the world, formed in 1991. Here is Dying Breath of Ephesians by Ebonsight ruclips.net/video/BktqXfFLrDs/видео.html
Our love Angela 🤘🤘
Angela is truly the queen of extreme metal female vocalists but... if you want to see the true origin of extreme metal female vocalists take a look at Sabina Classen from Holy Moses, the first album was recorded in 1986
Was just going to point out Sabina as well... (I guess I'm old enough to know them ;)).
It's nice to see someone pointed out Kittie but let's not forget about queen OTEP
Metal is life....Life is metal \m/
Angela is not the 1st female growler in metal music history. If i'm not mistaken, the front woman of the doom/death metal band MYTHIC was the 1st or the female front woman of the band NUCLEAR DEATH.
LEGEND
En una sola palabra: IMPONENTE!!!
There's also Tairrie B from My Ruin and Candace Kucsulain from Walls of Jericho and a few others from the late 90's early 2000's. Arch Enemy weren't Angela's first band, I believe she was in bands throughout the 90's, and I can't be sure when she began death growling but it's very possible she was doing it, or at least attempting it, right from the start. If she wasn't the first then I'm certain she was one of the first.
Songs I love from Arch Enemy:
Burning Angel
My Apocalypse
Web Of Lies
I Am Legend/Out For Blood
Dead Eyes See No Future
Silverwing
Actually the queen of female growlers is probably Cadaveria wha actually started back in the 90s and still sings to this day
