Actually she's a really small woman, it's just that she seems to grow to about double size as soon as she sets foot on stage. Saw her from about third row in a small club back in the day and she was one of the most "scary" vocalists I ever saw live.

Angela Gossow will always be the metal queen, she's not just a female growling pioneer but also pioneered professional growl vocal coaching and fostered/inspired a whole generation of female metal vocalists. :) She's semi-retired from singing and acts as the band's manager now but she recently made an awesome guest appearance in Amaranthe's 'Do or die'. :)
Angela was amazing; prefer her over Alissa, vocally. Y'all should check out Kittie, too. I wouldn't call it "uplifting", but it's pretty impressive to listen to their junior albums when they were fresh out of high school (Spit and Oracle). They had some changes in their line up on later albums, and their sound changed over the years, but they were always one of my favourite all female bands. Any genre.

However, Angela has demos going back to 1991 but just couldn't break into the scene until later. Otep also started in 2000, but I don't know how far back her practice of growling skills goes. Second, they were legitimate performing bands with names and albums called Asmodina and Mistress. Just because they didn't necessarily do full-length albums (in today's standards) or really have a label, it doesn't make them any less of an album. Also, Asmodina did have one full length album released in 1997 called Inferno, but they broke up in 1998 due to a bad experience with their label.
