One state will go from non-swing to swing maybe every 10 years That’s not often enough to make a difference… You still have about 7 states deciding every election It shouldn’t BE that way. If it were “One Person, One Vote” you would have people all across the country’s votes combining together to decide who’s president, not individual states All the (many) Republicans in a state like California, for instance, could combine with Republicans in states like Arkansas and Iowa to elect Trump Instead, with the EC, California Republicans have no voice in Presidential elections
Polling was way off. Also we had a huge ballot harvesting problem last election, which most states passed laws to fix. The dems got like 6 million less votes than last time, which never happens. Glad things are back to normal.
The thing about the electoral college is it forces candidates to go to more states. Without it California, New York, Texas and Florida would determine the presidency. With the Electoral college there is usually between 6 and 12 swing states and they change every few elections.
No. It doesn’t *force* the candidates to go to any states but the swing states You claim that without it, California, New York, Texas and Florida would decide every election… Is that really worse than Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Georgia deciding every election, which is the case now? With the Electoral College, Republicans in “blue states” like Illinois and California are being silenced… Their vote for president means nothing. Because their state’s electoral votes go to the Dems every time In a “one person, one vote” system, all the Republican votes in the country would actually matter…
The swing state don’t change… Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Michigan are always swing states Why is it better having these states decide every election? The Electoral College is actually silencing Republicans in places like Inland California or Downstate Illinois… These 2 states always go to Democrats In a true “one person, one vote” system, all of California and Illinois’s Republicans would actually have a lot more clout, because they would combine with Republican voters in red states
@@coyotelong4349the swing States most certainly do change. Just two elections ago Florida was considered a swing state for 20+ years. Now it's considered a solidly red state and as such has ceased to be a swing state. They may not change all too often, but to say swing states do not change is not true.
@@gokaury They don’t change nearly often enough to matter There shouldn’t be “swing states” anyway… Every state in America should be considered a swing state in any election, and should be treated as such If there were no Electoral College, then that would be the case… Candidates would be compelled to go talk to members of their party WHEREVER they are California has lots of Republicans, so does Illinois and New York State, but every presidential election their votes mean nothing for president because of the states they live in… That’s thanks to the EC
We probably know better than half of the maga crowd. Anyway, a union of states does not mean certain states must be weighted more than others AND that every state should donate all of their electors via a winner takes all principle. so nice try.
@@Joel-l7y1c I understand it, you just seem to think that the current way the union is oganized, electorally, is the only possible option. That's fine, sometimes it's better to keep things simple for simple folks.
Trump Won the electoral and Popular vote. So no one can argue the people of the US didn’t want him- majority did. Never-mind that Kamala wasn’t even democratically chosen by the people to be the nominee. The electoral votes were created so that big cities in large states would not dictate every election. New York is a great example, the State tends to lead more republican, save for a few cities in the greater state. New York City however, with its large population, is democratic. If it were by popular vote, the focus for politicians would only be the cities.
I haven't seen the final tally but it's very likely that more eligible voters chose not to vote than voted for Trump. So yes, the argument can be made that most didn't want him.
He should not have even been on the ballot. Period. Being convicted of a crime disqualifies you. Bank fraud and sexual assault are crimes, and he was found guilty. Having a massive amount of debt disqualifies you he has that. It is seen as cause for concern because you may accept a bribe to repay your debt, and in exchange you do things or make decisions that may put our national security at risk. Why did he get a pass?
If the election were decided only by the popular vote, then the large cities in New York and California would decide the election every time. The genius of the electro college is it gives a voice to those living in more rural areas.
It would make sense if the electoral college was removed as the electoral college doesn’t represent the peoples will. Also, Trump won the popular vote so respectfully, you are incorrect about big cities deciding the election everytime. If the electoral college didn’t exist, trump still would have won this election.
@DG-nk7jo The electoral college spreads out power. Each State of the Union has its individual rights and voice. Each State votes for a president (electoral votes). Having individual States rights spreads power around, thus, preventing a dictatorship. When power is consolidated in one area, that’s when a dictatorship can occur. Democrats always create Federal laws that override States’ Rights. Republicans always eliminate Federal laws and leave it to each individual State to decide.
Electoral votes are allocated among the States based on the Census. Every State is allocated a number of votes equal to the number of Senators and Representatives in its U.S. Congressional delegation-two votes for its Senators in the U.S. Senate plus a number of votes equal to the number of its Congressional districts.
Incorrect… You cast a ballot, and your ballot is counted to decide the winner of an election That makes America a democracy. PERIOD. 😂 That’s literally all that a democracy is The terms “Republic” and “Democracy” do not mean different things… A Republic is a type of democracy. A monarchy (like Britain) can also be a democracy Your argument is akin to arguing that “A Ferrari isn’t a vehicle, it’s a sports car”
@@claytonboren3353America is a democracy in the form of a constitutional republic The words “republic” and “democracy” are not conflicting terms… It seems you have been brainwashed to believe that “democracy” has to do with Democrats, and “republic” has to do with Republicans… Which is ridiculous

@@coyotelong4349a democracy I where you vote directly for a person, like mayor or governor. A republic is where you cast a ballot and that counts towards someone (electoral college) voting on your behalf.
Not really. Millions don’t bother to vote b/c their state is already designated red or blue. Had hoped that even more Americans would turn out this year, even if not in a swing state.
It’s a guard against city state government. And also a guard against fraud in one state. Without the college, everyone would move to the cities and they would hand out even more free stuff. It would rig the system
The Brits, the Australians , and the Canadians are so much more informed about our elections than we are about their elections. Hell I saw an Australian news reporter say that our elections are just as important if not more important than their pick for their prime minster. Crazy stuff.
I started lurking on foreign news sites around 20+ years ago and was surprised at how invested foreigners were in our elections. Some even saying they should have a say in our elections since it affects their lives too.
First message I got last night when it was pretty much confirmed trump won was from my Aussie buddy. He said he was 14 beers deep watching the election all day and his girl was begging him to turn it off 😂
I'm Canadian and most of us know more about American politics than we do about our own. Everything America does trickles into Canada, so it's very important to us. There are a lot of American owned companies in Canada, and we get a lot of our products from America, so when RFK Jr. talks about getting harmful chemicals out of food, that is very exciting for us too.
Yeah. I do enjoy the amount of hate white women (especially) are dishing out right now because they can't get a baby vacuumed out of them whenever they feel like it. Having to be an adult and make adult choices is scary. I get that. But... *"Hoes mad" starts playing*
As an American, I really appreciate y’all picking a video that not just tells you the results, but also helps explain the process. The electoral college system can be quite confusing even for some Americans. Keep up the great content! : )
Yeah some people, them all being left leaning as far as I have seen, aren't fans of the electoral college, mainly because they often have hard time winning it, and instead have an easier time winning the popular vote. The electoral college has exited in the US since the late 1700s when it was put in the Constitution. Also attempting to get rid of it would almost be impossible considering it would require passing a Constitutional Amendment through Congress then require 2/3 of the states approval. That's required for all Constitutional Amendments. One of the main reasons it exists is to bring a compromise between states with a large population, who would basically control the popular vote, and the remaining less populated states, that's why the numbers differ. Also the electoral college exists, more importantly, to recognize the power of the states themselves. After it was the states at formed the nation and its government in the 1700s. The electoral votes can only change after every 10 years when a census is done to tally population changes, which currently, on average shows at least in 2030 when the next census takes place, many of those electoral votes will be taken from more northern states and given to more southern states and people move south. As for Trump's win, he is only the second US President to win non-consecutive terms, the first was Grover Cleveland in 1885 and then in 1897.
I want the EC gone for the sake of Republicans, actually There are many Republicans in California and Illinois and other “blue states” but they get ignored because of the EC

The problem of just using the popular vote is California and New york would decide who the president is and politicians would ignore all the other states with this method it gives every state a voice and say in the election!
@@red14carbluebattleship76 If every single person in that state voted for the same person. Which has never even been close to happening since the first few elections when very few people were able to vote
@ Just shows though how many would be needed in the most extreme measure. Unless you need all 50 states, which you never do, popular vote will always leave smaller states without a voice.
The Electoral College was a brilliant solution to the problem of the tyranny of the majority. The ancient Greeks had a Direct Democracy (one person, one vote) and it contributed to their downfall. A vote of over 50% governs all. So if 50.1 % of the people want to impose their will on the 49.9% thay can do it. The Electoral College takes that away. The U.S. is not a democracy, it is a Constitutional Republic, a confederation of states. Without the EC the major metropolitan areas on the coasts could dictate to the entire country. One can see the effect of it when the winning candidate loses the popular vote. It forces those who want to govern to appeal to a wide range of states, rather than to just those in the biggest cities. The problem with this narrator is that he believes what the major American media says. Trump's first term was hardly underwhelming. In spite of the extreme pushback from the democrats and the press, he had several major accomplishments.
@@Jklopoppcorn Yes the Democratic system that is full of "deep state swamp people" and is "rigged" and stole the election from him last time oddly didn't steal it this time....isn't that fact interesting ....it's only broken when he lost
@14:29 Two components to the difference between the polls and what, ultimately, happens on Election night. 1) There's the factor that some people on the 'right' don't want to give their intended voting information to pollsters. The same phenomenon when asked about whether/not they own guns. 2) Some news outlets oversample Democrats when reporting results from the telephone calls, etc. Oversampling = reporting results from a higher percentage of Democrats than actually is the split between Democrats, Independents and Republicans.
As explained in the video, a candidate can get elected president without winning the popular vote. It is subjective to electoral votes . Trump won both: Kamala 67,857,300 Trump. 72,271,400 (he got 4.4 million more popular votes)
When they talk about the popular vote they mean the national popular vote. The state popular votes do matter. Biden did win the popular vote for the whole country and electoral college in 2020. Hillary in 2016 won the national popular vote but lost the electoral college because she won big in very populated states but won less than half the states while trump won more votes in a majority of states but less populated states. But It’s only happened 6 times in US history where the national popular vote and electoral college winner was different. The vast majority of the time the winner of the electoral college also wins the most votes across the whole country.
Gore and Clinton won the popular vote most recently. It doesn't happen often, but it should not happen at all in a civilized nation. Most importantly: election campaigns could become much more transparent and democratized. No longer this ridiculous focus on swingstates and disregard for 'safe' states by both parties. Ridiculous.
7:15 The issue with using the popular vote only is that the most populous areas (coastal cities that think alike) would be always pushing their beliefs and policies down on the rest of the country. Not a good idea for social cohesion. That’s why we have states like we do. It’s a federalist system. And we are a democratic republic.
That same reasoning is why I think the big cities still control too much even in this system, like Cali probably wouldn't be 54 free points to blue every time if that got cut up into 3 or 4 pieces Nebraska style. Do the same to TX/NY/FL while you're at it and there wouldn't be anything worth over 20.
From a completely unbiased view, just giving you the super basic argument, the electoral college vote puts more weight/importance towards swing states. If we switched to popular vote it would be the opposite and put more weight/importance in NYC/LA/CHI. The candidates currently spend most of their time in the few swing states. If we switched they would spend most of their time in NYC and LA

Keep in mind that the swing states shift around with the different decades. The swing states change over time. People move. Ideas change. So too do the swing states that make the difference in the election. And if the states do change, then that makes them all important. The main objection to the electoral college that people have is that a candidate can still lose even if they win the overall popular vote. The reason the Founding fathers did it this way was so that the large population centers of the country can't vote for the whole every single time. If this was the case, the rural population, which normally votes more conservative, would never have their individual vote make a difference. It would essentially turn into a one-party system, which our Founding Fathers did not want.
Thing about the swing states, is due to political realignment, as well as interstate population shifts, swing states do change over time. Florida and Iowa used to be swing states. Pennsylvania and Wisconson used to not be swing states.
@@Yawnzee_ I'm not even in your country, thank god. And i'm not refuing that people are partying. I'm just saying that it's a one man achievement by Trump, it's a shift to the maga crowd not the republican party.

The American people united and our mandate was clear. We are done with woke. We use the electorate system because we're not the united States of California and New York. Each state gets a say.. Trump won the popular vote too, btw.
The swing states are not always the same states. Some elections there have just one swing state and other times there were more than 16. The electoral college makes sure that states with a high population do not dominate smaller states. Population number set the electoral college vote totals for each state. California has the most because it has 40 million people. Then Texas has 30 million. Florida is next and then New York. There population numbers I do not have at this moment.
You think the government is going to lower food prices and insurance? How stupid are you? .. that would be Socialism, dumb, dumb. MAGA's are the dumbest people in America.
I have to add my two cents on the electoral college after reading these comments defending it. As a left leaning person who grew up in what was considered a "red" state, I did not even feel like my vote mattered. Only 55% of the vote there is "red" though, so 45% percent of the population is basically not represented. We should not have 5-7 states deciding the fate of the entire country each election cycle and candidates should not be basically ignoring a large portion of states because they've already been deemed "red" or "blue."
Can say same thing about Popular vote.. Electoral vote is done so that only a few states wouldn't decide who President.. Take California and New York(Please lol) they have a sh*t load of people. The Founders didn't want let's say 15 states get to choose the Pres and the other 35 states are out of luck.. It took almost all the states to decide the Pres..
So your answer is to put the power in the hands of 5-7 big cities? More importantly, why should whole states have their politics decided by one or two major cities? Look at Illinois for example. 90% of their counties are deep red. Why should illinoisans in those counties abide by the vote of Chicago?
Mike, you are allowed to have an opinion! Your country and mine are closely entwined! I am so happy President Trump won. The last four years were insane and the Democratic Party fell so far off the left that Americans had enough!
The Biden administration got your inflation down to 2.4%, unemployment went down to 4.1% and the stock market was reaching record highs. It’s absolutely insane to me that you guys are falling for the man who caused everything to go bad in the first place.
I’m so glad to not have Kamala in charge. It is genuinely a load off my shoulders. I love how invested the rest of the world is in our politics. Feeds into the American sensationalism.

It is annoying to live in a state where you know your vote won’t make a difference, but the other thing is that the swing states change. Florida and Ohio used to be the two big swing states but now they’re considered guarantees for Republicans. Back in the 70s and 80s California was guaranteed Republican but now it is guaranteed Democrat. Up until Trump won them in 2016, WI, MI and PA were reliable Democratic states but have since entered the swing state category.
I'll never forget that election here in Canada when Trudeau got in. I was born in Newfoundland but now live in Alberta. Alberta is typically a conservative or NDP province. That election Alberta was largely conservative the bulk of the senate seats going conservative, all 7 of Newfoundland's seats went Liberal. A lot of people here were blaming "the stupid Newfies" for giving Trudeau a majority government. Alberta has 34 seats in the senate, Newfoundland has 7. And there are 338 seats in the Canadian senate. 7 is a blip on the radar.
The pollsters do the best they can by scraping the bottom of the barrel for information. Only a special type of person will voluntarily stop what they are doing to answer questions, especially political ones.
Don't let anyone get away with saying a national popular vote is a better system. If we went by the popular vote, a few highly populated areas with very similar values and ways of thinking would dominate every election. With the current system, it forces candidates to have to appeal to the entire country as a whole. You can't forget about Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, or North Carolina. You can't forget about Nevada and Iowa. California and New York cannot dominate everything. There is a reason we are not a direct democracy, and there's a reason our country decided against a national popular vote long ago. With the electoral college, a candidate must have wide appeal. The only reason you are hearing rumblings of a national popular vote is because Democrats are mad they've been winning the popular vote for the past 20 years and have lost elections because they didn't win enough electoral college votes. They're mad California and New York isn't enough to win. They're just being sore losers.
It is the better system. MOST of the developed world operates without the Electoral College and they do so quite well. _'You can't forget about Nevada and Iowa'_ Yes we can. They contribute little to the the economy or nation as a whole; yet they're allowed to dictate policy for States that actually drive economic, cultural, and intellectual progress; policies driven by demented fanatics that refuse to even attempt to compromise. It's absurd. _'With the electoral college, a candidate must have wide appeal.'_ Exactly the opposite. You only need to appeal to the states that have a disproportionate amount of votes for their population. States with historically poor education systems(by design of the party in power there) and are easily duped. _'They're just being sore losers.'_ No; we're just tired of ignorant, regressive policies being propped up by political DEI. If your polices were so good they would actually appeal to more people. But the only way you can succeed is by denying a far larger group of people their just representation.
The States (Maine, and Nebraska) that split their votes got it right. You get the best of both worlds. You count each individual congressional district as they vote, plus whomever has the most votes in the state gets the remaining 2 senatorial votes.
The electoral college would be fine if the votes were split by district, or handled in some way that isn’t winner take all. That’s the key issue with the EC in its current form. And don’t you dare come on here with your clearly biased take and then whine about “democrats are sore losers”, because that’s a load of dogshit and you know it. You people also ALWAYS ignore the fact that California and New York have more republicans than any other states, and as it currently stands, their votes are meaningless. So if the EC went away, their votes would actually mean something. It’s common sense that every human being in this country should have equal say in who is elected. No one should have more or less power based on where they live. LAND DOESN’T VOTE.
Daz, you've mentioned more times than I can count that you don't do politics on this channel. Just look at the shit storm in the comment section...but hey, clicks.
The Electoral College exists because the US is a union of different states. It’s basically the EU. It exists to make sure that each state or country gets a voice within the union. It wouldn’t be fair for the UK to make laws for say Germany now would it?
It also prevents a consolidation of power on the Federal level. When power is consolidated is when a Dictatorship can occur. Who always wants more Federal power and Federal laws that override State’s Rights? Democrats.
This is an awful comparison, just awful. The electoral college leads to a vote in a certain state being more valuabe than those in others, both due to the winner takes all concept and the fact that some states represent somewhat more electors than their population justifies. When states are not represented equally, by default this hurts the rights of other states. The local rights in states are well anchored and the electoral college does not contribute anything to it. That being said: individual countries in the EU still have many more rights, liberties and sovereignty than any state within the US has.

As a non voter i saw this outcome months ago, with all the complaining about prices i had a strong feeling trump was going to win. I'm just surprised how big he won I was expecting a close race not a blowout.
Trumps success as a politician is inexplicable. He's not particularly likeable, he has a number of controversies that any one or two would kill anorher politician even if people liked them, his platform is basic sound bites with little specificity. He jas been President before and people voted out of office once before after a lack luster term. Trump is an anomalie in American politics, whether you're a Democrat or a Republican it just doesn't make sense
I think it's wrong to say that he is not likeable. It's more accurate to say that he is controversial. People either love him or hate him. The reason he was successful in 2016 is because he filled a gap in politics that was not being taken advantage of by anyone else. The pre-Trump Republican party platform was too weak on illegal immigration and too pro war. Before Trump realigned the Republican party people were wondering if Republicans would ever win a Presidential election ever again, and rightly so. And as for his controversies that would kill any other politicians chances, the issue is simply that Trump's adversaries attacked him too hard and too long on trivial issues beforehand. It was clear that they were holding him to a different standard than they would other politicians. And so when more serious accusations and charges were levied against him post 2020, people assumed it was just a continuation of the politically motivated attacks against him. And regardless of how right or wrong this sentiment was, it essentially neutered the impact any of these issues would have in this election cycle, or if anything helped him. Concerns about the state of Democracy was the largest issue on the minds of voters according to many polls, but it is clear that for at least some people this translated to a concern about the so called weaponisation of the judiciary against political opponents rather than thr concern about election result denial that many pundits assumed that it indicated.

That would be idiotic. The electoral college functions to prevent elections from being entirely decided by a handful of large urban areas in a few states. In a straight vote, the urban populations of California, New York, Massachusetts, Illinois, and Virginia/DC Corridor would outvote the entirety of the Western, Midwestern, and less populous Southern states like Louisiana. People in those areas would never see their views represented, and would never have their voices heard in the political spectrum. The Liberal/Left/Progressive political parties would also never be in a position to have their political views challenged either, and would become even more stagnant than they already are. This would also, incidentally, leave two of the three "boxes of political change" effectively locked out for the vast majority of the most heavily armed and inherently anti-authoritarian sections of the US population. Which also happens to be the areas where most of the nation's food is grown, a large portion of its production capacity is located, and where a VERY large percentage of the US military comes from. The Founding Father's were far wiser than most, and knew what they were doing.

The "swing" states aren't set in stone. They change all the time. It all depends on local poling.
One state will go from non-swing to swing maybe every 10 years
That’s not often enough to make a difference… You still have about 7 states deciding every election
It shouldn’t BE that way. If it were “One Person, One Vote” you would have people all across the country’s votes combining together to decide who’s president, not individual states
All the (many) Republicans in a state like California, for instance, could combine with Republicans in states like Arkansas and Iowa to elect Trump
Instead, with the EC, California Republicans have no voice in Presidential elections
@@coyotelong4349 If it were only popular vote that would bne total democracy which is a stupid concept.
Polling was way off. Also we had a huge ballot harvesting problem last election, which most states passed laws to fix. The dems got like 6 million less votes than last time, which never happens.

@@charismatic9467yeah that would make us a city state government. La and New York would control everyone. The electoral college is smart.
The thing about the electoral college is it forces candidates to go to more states. Without it California, New York, Texas and Florida would determine the presidency. With the Electoral college there is usually between 6 and 12 swing states and they change every few elections.
Devil's advocate, it also allows for minority rule.

You claim that without it, California, New York, Texas and Florida would decide every election…
Is that really worse than Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Georgia deciding every election, which is the case now?
With the Electoral College, Republicans in “blue states” like Illinois and California are being silenced… Their vote for president means nothing. Because their state’s electoral votes go to the Dems every time
In a “one person, one vote” system, all the Republican votes in the country would actually matter…
The swing state don’t change… Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Michigan are always swing states

The Electoral College is actually silencing Republicans in places like Inland California or Downstate Illinois… These 2 states always go to Democrats

There shouldn’t be “swing states” anyway… Every state in America should be considered a swing state in any election, and should be treated as such

@@damionhunter314 The electoral college denies the people’s will.
@DG-nk7jo
The electoral college spreads out power.
Each state has 2 Senators. Therefore there are 100 senators.

@red14carbluebattleship76 You don't need all 50 states at all. And if a state is solidly red or blue it gets ignored. Most
The Electoral College was a brilliant solution to the problem of the tyranny of the majority.

Trump won both:
Kamala 67,857,300
Trump.
Ridiculous.
Well, as my history teacher told me, it really comes down to who wins the most of 51 individual popular votes in the states and DC
Trivia: The most recent Electoral College is named New Clacton.
The founders were smart af.

@SpottedZebra they should do something like that here in Canada. At this point if a candidate takes Ontario and Quebec. It's pretty much over.

Total BS. The popular vote would rarely have a Republican winner. That’s what needs to be said.

Democrats.
@@lisahumphries3898well said
This is an awful comparison, just awful.
We are a Republic of States

Just be glad it's not like it is in Canada, there's the liberal party, the united conservative party, the new democratic party, the block quebecois, the green party and pretty recently they added the People's party.

I'm so happy and thankful to see so many people from all walks of life waking up. This is part of the American dream right here. All of us putting away our "differences" to ensure that this country keeps moving forward 💪
As far as I’m concerned, it’s not a happy day. the electrical college is so outdated. They need to do away with it and go with popular vote.
Well Trump won the pop vote too.. Sooo you still be not happy...
Well trump won the popular also
That would be idiotic.

If you wanted civility.. you picked the worst candidate for that. You don't go far right or far left and then hope for bipartisanship.
the story here is that the people don’t want the country to go too far left or too far right. every single time we’ll go at most 8 years in one direction then inherently reel it back in.
Well, I would generally believe you, but this current election sent us farther right than I’ve ever seen in my long life, and it’s alarming just how many people are totally ok with that. I feel like what’s actually best for America is a more centric system that isn’t left OR right leaning, something more moderate that appeals to both sides equally, but I don’t know if we’ll ever see that now. Also, it bears repeating for those that don’t realize it that the so called “left” in America is basically center-right in almost any other country. That’s why I cringe when I see republicans claim democrats are “communists” or “socialist” whatever, because in the real world, the average democrat is pretty much dead center on the scale.
