New sub here. Loved your reaction to the Godmother of Growls. Angela was not the first woman to do it, but she reached new levels and thus paved the way for many awesome women in this genre. She stepped down years ago and now manages Arch Enemy. Her replacement is great, but Angela will always be special to me. Best regards, from an old German metal-head 🤘
Angela was special, Arch-Enemy during this era was special. This band and Angela broke through walls simply because it was heavy and harsh as f**k, they were among the best in the melo-death genre and it was never about Angela being a woman, or anything odd or unusual, they, and she simply were that good and it was remarkable because it was never about it being remarkable if that makes sense. Angela broke ground without it being all about breaking ground, instead it was all about the metal and the fans. So pleased that I saw them live during this era.

I love the live performance Arch Enemy did in Tokyo. The fact the whole CROWD was singing to the MELODY of the guitar, while interacting with the band, the band truly loves their fans, and that is absolutely amazing
Angela Gossow perfected the growling/screaming technique, she uses special belly breathing techniques etc. to not destroy her vocal chords. She even appears in "Zen of Screaming 2", an instructional DVD to show how to scream properly for death metal purposes :)
Yess, somebody reacting to Angela Gossow, she's great! I saw them once live in concert from the front rows, she looks like such a sweet tiny girl, but she's a beast on stage
Makes me sad almost all the AE reactions or for Alissa, Alissa is talented but Angela is one of the best live harsh vocalists ever regardless of gender, she may not have the cleans like Alissa but Alissa isn’t even close to the power and brutality of Angela when it comes to the harsh vocals. One of the best live death metal vocalists ever.
Appreciate that you saw Angela before the new vocalist. Her replacement is certainly good but definitely not as powerful as Angela.
My personal favorite track from Arch Enemy (and the first track I ever heard from them) is "My Apocalypse". Worth checking out if you like.
Alissa is talented but it just ain’t the same, Angela’s power and brutality just can’t be matched, she’s one of the best live death metal vocalists ever regardless of gender. For me the band just isn’t the same without Chris and Angela, I want to like them Still but they just don’t do it for me anymore and that bums me Out, this era and this show were incredible.
This will be fun. Angela is a beast. She was an early adopter of growling vocals with demos going back to 91 so probably starting to learn in the 80s when that was a very niche vocal style. She paid a price for paving the way and you can hear it in her speaking voice. She still manages AE as well as half a dozen other metal bands.
Angela Gossow on stage reminds me of the Gladiator opening: Upon my signal, unleash hell.
This is the 160 cm tall German godmother of all female growers. She is Arch Enemy's second vocalist after her male predecessor. They only present audio files to fans at first and after fans liked it, they offered the whole truth: It's a girl 😀.

Welcome to Arch Enemy. One of metals greatest ever bands. Their combination of brutality and melody is hard to beat. The guys are just unbelievable musicians, with some of the best guitar and drums u will ever hear. And then there is Angela who is just a one of a kind. The Queen of Metal.
When u grow up listening to death metal and seeing peoples first reaction to arch enemy's Angela is literally the best thing ever

Actually, the whole concert is a hell of a performance and well worth watching. (It has been published on DVD and can be found on YT as well.)
The amount of power Angela still has at the last song of the set is incredible, her technique was/is so excellent and set the mark for all female death metal vocalists thereafter.
P.S.: The other early female extreme vocalist that hit me (and many others ...) as hard as Angela Gossow in early times was Dr. Otep Shamaya, Esq. (Yes, she actually studied law, and it's her real academic title ...)

It is an extreme expression of raw feelings, rarely reached by anyone else.

Nemesis is a great song, especially this live, and your reaction was great ! ut yeah, if this is your "introduction" to the more heavier side of metal, it's like getting punched in the face. This song is really fast and... full ? Don't know how to describe it, it fills the room around you, and there is indeed a lot of things happening really fast. One of my favorite song, by one of my favorite band ! Glad you liked it. As others have said, this whole concert is stupidly good, the track list is awesome and the performance is top notch !

I was at ozzfest and we had gone back into one of the buildings to take a break from the crowd and to get some food. When we were walking back we could hear this awesome band playing but we didn't know who it was. When we got close enough to see, we were shocked to see her screaming on stage. We thought it was a guy. I ended buying their new album they were touring which had Nemesis on it. We have been big fans ever since!

Ohhh Angela, what an absolute beast. She may just have the most powerful growls I have experienced.
I agree. She's such a specialist that nobody can outdo the explosiveness of her growling power. What I find especially interesting is how Nemesis is written to maximize that explosive power with very short lines that are just a few syllables long so every word can be ripped out savagely.
Yeah she is really great she has Asthma yet super helped me feel better and motivation in life in general as well

Now, they have a new singer (Alice), which is also growler (of little different kind), and Angela become manager of band! If you like to check some growlers, you could also check Melissa Bony singing with different bands. I recommend songs with her band (Ad Infinitum) "I'm the storm" and "Marches on Versalles", and also very interesting Japanese band "Broken by the Scream" (with songs "Sayonara Birthday" let's say). Those Japanese girls are interesting because they have 4 girls singing: 2 of them singing "clean vocals", and 2 more "death core section" with one of them singing low growls (better then many of the mans!) and one high pitched screams! They are very unusual, but very interesting! Oh, yes, Melissa Bony also had side-projects with different bands, but one especially interest is a kind of super-band "Dark Side of the Moon"! You could check that, too!
Oh you gotta look up some insane crowds around the world, amon ammarth is a good band for that viking metal.. they even a made a song now with rowing in it for the crowds to "row" to as the viking descended crowds love to row in concerts. it's awesome to see.
Arch Enemy is quite good as long as your brain can handle it. I prefer when it's mixed with cleans, which Jinjer does an amazing job of.

They have had a couple singers over the years, both sound pretty similar. If you want to check out ladies that can growl and also sing check out Jinjer (Tatiana sings) and Ad Infinium or Rage of Light (Melissa Boney sings). There are others but the one you just heard probably started it all.
You should check out her old band asmodina for a bit more of her normal voice.
You can just pick any song from the Tokyo live performance. They are all class.

I actually prefer Alissa to Angela, but really just as a personal preference. Angela was a great front person for the group with tons of power on her. I believe Alissa will allow for a rejuvenation of their sound and for other original material from them.

I have that dvd and it's amazing. Angela didn't sing with clean voice and never did. Alissa ..... she's doing that and have a great clean voice. Check up the latest video .... and the other two from the upcoming cd
The dvd is one of the best concerts a metalhead could watch. They are on fire. To me they are one of metals greatest ever bands

Ravenous/Blood on your hands/Enemy Within are all amazing songs from the same set. It's really worth it to do all of them. She sounds better in some of them, probably because she's a bit tired during Nemesis. It's the last song of the set.

She never sang clean, always growled --the best, incredibly powerful as you could see here. And that vocal style does nothing to the vocal cords, if done correctly, because it does not really use them. If it did, the person's vocal apparatus would not last long --which happens to people without the proper technique. What vibrates in this style is the false cords, which are above the real vocal cords, and other tissues, I suppose.

@@Nightwishmaster me too dude, they were so good and Angela was truly a special death metal vocalist especially live, makes me sad I never got the chance to see them in person. I don’t have any interest in seeing the currently lineup live. Just isn’t the same for me without Angela and Chris and the sound is way more commercialized and generic, I’m happy for the members tho since it brought them much more fame and money
I used to binge watch it when it came out, I was in the uni back then. No clue how the years passed, still feels like yesterday. Good times

She's the godmother of scream. The first one to ever make it big doing heavy vocals. Liked + subbed. You mentioned To the Hellfire, love that song/band too. Arch is more heavy metal, Lorna Shore more "melodic" metalcore. Arch has the live advantage because the instruments aren't all garbled up into a big mess (complex fast music).
Lorna shore and this have nothing in common and definitely don't belong in the same sentence..

Angela never sang with her clear voice. She was also in the management of the band. With increasing success it became more and more difficult to do both. Finally she gave up singing in 2014 and is now in the management of several bands.
