This brings back some memories. I went to Big Island in the mid-90s, an experience I’ll never forget. You weren’t allowed on Saddle Road in rentals then, but of course we drove it both ways twice! We also went to a place called Waipio Valley, with a very steep road down to it. We asked some people at the lookout above it how far down it was. “1 mile down, and 2 miles back up”, they said. It didn’t really make much sense until we came back up. It was too steep to walk a straight line so you had to zigzag.
30 years ago, Saddle Road was marked on the Enterprise Rental Car map, "Passing this point will void your rental car contract," because there were no telephones or services until you got right outside of Hilo. needless to say, it was the first drive we took.
Mate, I really enjoy watching your videos. Planning to kick off my own channel as soon as my legs healed up. I went to the Big Island in 2012 with limited gear so really want to get back there. The volcano national park is epic, and taking one of the guided tours up to the observatories tells you the incredible stories and history of how it came to be. I hate to say it but watching your video I couldn't stop graving for some drone shots of the epic scenery! 😅
