We used to go into St Omer Barracks when it was ACC, 1977. There were hordes of juniors (Apprentice College) all getting beasted, and forage caps thrown everywhere on the way up to the drill square. Thirty odd years ago St Omer had an apprentice side and a regular side - the place was packed out. We thought we'd ended up in a Guards depot, judging by the drill. We were glad to get out of the place. The 'band' was nothing like this then - just a few drums and a xylophone, seriously. Take my word for it those people got beasted; out in their units the ACC were sometimes better soldiers than we were! Never take the piss out of the 'cooks'.

maggots! sorry chap, old habits and all that, was there in 1985, Hated it, every day of it, but stuck it ten years in the end, seeing that bloody red light on top of the tower block after returning from a long weekend broke my heart but knowing it's all gone is a little bit saddening now, look back on it with pride and have never denied being a "sloppo". some do, repect to a fellow " Army Chef" Regards mate

So good to stumble across this!
Thank you for putting it together; a flood of great memories and feelings came rushing back then.
I went on to transfer to the Gunners (29) then onto 148 bty where I had some brilliant times, but nothing matches the feeling I had when I was 16/17 with you guys!
A youth well spent, amongst brilliant people!
      Love to all,
      Dave P

Sadly when I left recruit training in May 1979 my squad (18) only had 7 of us were left. So many went by the wayside and we never got a passing out parade. Posting order and off to my first unit: Prince of Wales Regiment of Yorkshire based in Picton Barracks Bulford. Fond memories of the depot, especially so during my 3 years on the Corps Mobile Display Team 85-88…

in my armed forces time, st omer barracks, was the most insecure camp i ever went, one ira bomb, could have taken out the whole parade .

    • @elliottg.1954

The grownups were Muppets there. Even after local attacks the entire camp at St Omer was wide open . Anyone could have strolled straight in from several sides. Clayton Bks across the road was left unguarded all the time.
