If you put more than 1 piece of bacon in there you'd fix your retention issue.
So true. People think splashing mo ey around makes people happy. But everyone knows that's crsp. Give an extra piece of bacon and you'll get so much more back

When I was in, it was 1 1/2 rashers of bacon per person one for eating 1/2 for cooking. I miss the old choofers (fuel heater immersion) when they blow their stacks, scare the crap out of you.

I have to add in all honesty I'd prefer a double down on the eggs in the field. Bacon can make you feel very sluggish after consumption. Fat is good but protein is much better for physical performance. There is a time and place for everything under the sun. I live by that. End ex is very appropriate for a big feed and celebrations.
Some of the hardest working, most under appreciated soldiers in the Army. The hours are long, the work often thankless. Be good to your cooks! (Ps. Not a cook.)
My Dad was a Cook in the Swedish Army and Served in Korea Became a Chef working in Eskilstuna Sweden
As a ex cook , we relied on seeing the troop's faces , they may have been doing it hard , in mud , rain or dust but a good meal is always a welcome sight. We were always told that we could eat anything but the troops did not have that option , only what we sent them , and we did what we could to make their meals hearty and filling.
And to think in 1999, the AACC was all but gone, pretty much replaced by contractors. The deployment to Timor immediately highlighted the Army's shorted sightedness and the importance of the AACC.
Yeah, I thought it was all outsourced, so it's good to know it's done in-house once again.
I got fed well in Timor from the cooks. No complaints here

I was told that Serco would be the catering for the army , and that cooks like me were on the endangered list. Serco cooks were not very reliable , mainly because Serco worked them to hell , the army was one cook per 50 men , serco is one cook per 100 - 150 men.

Every cook in every unit (Infantry) I served in did an outstanding job. Never had a bad meal.

Often overlooked just like logistics. Both are crucial to a well functioning military unit. Bellies full and magazines full.
Everyone knows, you dont mess with the Cooks. Love em to death, good food, lots of it. They work so hard.

We only ever had one company complain out bush , so curry it is . After four days two cartons of VB arrived and the menu changed to steak and chips.
Good to see the Army still has some chefs left... from looking at the bases the amount of contractors would make you think different.
Ultimate respect for the AACC. After 20 years service (RAASC/RACT) I never could understand why the young guys would go to ASCO to buy e.g. pie and chips.

She was very nice about it. What he said was very bad for morale. Thats something an officer would say thinking they're being cute. And if you're not using the appropriate PPE, they've got something to say.

How good is it when you know the Chefs are out field, Hotbox meals are second to none. Shout out to Selleyman too!
These BTS are a great innovation for promoting Army. All congrats to the cooks a thankless task, very long hours in harsh conditions putting out quality meals

I worked for the Defence Department back in the 80s and 90s. Had the great good fortune to go to a LIVE FIRE at PUCKAPUNYAL. After the live fire we watched the demo for a fast leopard tank power pack swap (30 minutes for complete engine etc removal and replace). Then we had Lunch. Exactly as you see here, packs all coming out of hot boxes. And Army truly does march on its stomach.
I was in the CMF / Army Reserve, 10 Bat from mid 1970's to 1980. I never received a bad meal and had many memorable meals . I can still remember a Roast Pork lunch provided from hot boxes at the Murray Bridge range. Absolute bliss and the most delicious pork I have ever eaten even close to 50 years later. Kudos to the Australian tucker %$^kers
That was amazing, remindd me of my time as a chef in the military, nothing much has changed in the field, but it is a daunting task lots of 12 hoursshift and sleep and go again next day, priority to feed the troops.
Ive worked with an ex RAAF chef and ex Army chef. The RAAF guy showed me how to make proper coffee right from buying the bean to drawing the shot, including finishing touches, the Army guy made me a Black Forest Gateaux complete with Kirsch that ive never had equal to. These people are the real deal. EDIT: I'll have a banjo if theres one spare......

I was GD for a camp kitchen in the 90’s. We used chuffers to boil water thats ran on dripping unleaded fuel. Bang! But it was the officers who burnt down their own mess tent during a dining in night. Massive blaze!

I used to be a civvy contractor in the kitchens all over southern Qld we once did 16000 cut lunches for the battle of Milne bay 50th commemorations over a week. looks like its pretty much the same except for the cool little machine that seals the hot box tray lids. BTW 1600 cooked meals - well done folks.

The cooks do a good job. Its a shame Army downsized them. Not so long ago each Regiment and battalion had cooks posted to the unit, now you barely see them.

Seeing videos like this bring back a lot of memories. I wish I had my time again. The Army was a great life.
Back in the early 1980s I did general duties at a field kitchen for a couple of weeks. It was a lot more grass roots than that. If I remember correctly the tent... well that was a large tarpaulin for a roof.... and no sides.
Prepacked individual hot meals were unheard of in my era. I thought one piece of bacon a bit stingy. That kitchen was amazing to see in action... well done!
The hot boxes have improved.
I recall one breakfast in the early 1980s... mushrooms on toast... a hot box full of mushrooms... a hotbox full of half cold toast.... a hotbox full of coftea.. and I never ate mushrooms or drank coffee... that was just hard luck. You either ate what they gave you, or went hungry until smoko and lunch.
Then there was the exercise where 40 turned up instead of the expected 140 and we spent next two weeks where 140 meals kept turning up...It was hilarious. Our mess tins got double of everything. Two steaks and then, the SGT would walk around telling everyone to line up for another round. The only thing we never complained about was the ice cream and two fruits.
Cooks are some of the hardest working soldiers in the ADF.... RAE Sapper. Always great food Cookie 👍

Looks the same as when I was there in 03’. But the uniforms are newer. Has nothing changed in 20 years lol

My late uncle was a cook in the Australian Airforce in WW2. I had my dad & his three other brothers ( my uncles ) AND an additional uncle serve during WW2. The meals on offer then were let’s say, not up to this level but nonetheless dad said they never went hungry! Good job guys!👏🏼🇦🇺💪🏼
I was in the Army 40 years ago and we would stay out in the bush for weeks at a time eating MRE's and it was a treat if we got close to any Army Base and we just dropped in for a good feed, nice and warm food, a shower and a shave and back into the bush for some more action. I must have taken baths in just about anything that can hold water because if you don't it could be 3 weeks before before you get any where close to a Base. We would end up looking like a bunch of homeless guys, beards, dirty faces, dirty uniforms, and in desperate need of sleep. So after 12 hours of sleep, clean uniforms, fully packed with ammo, your own and a belt or two for the 2 gunners and back out again for 2 or 3 weeks. BUT any soldiers best friend is the Cooks, we always made friends with them because, they had all the goodies, ice cream and chocolates and the Base Tuck Shop, Cigarettes for the smokers and a bottle of Coke. And the 2 cans of Lager a night you could have, so all the non drinkers would offload to the drinkers in exchange for Cigarettes, Chocolates, Ice Cream, Shaving cream, Razors or a free hair cut, Yep Haircuts was not free, it was free officially but the barbers demanded a can of beer per head. LOL!
I worked in banquets at a casino my supervisor was a Sargent in the army a few were thus the very high standard of service. Some would be in different uniform every month 😎 everything on the table was string lined .
Ok ppl why does my husband cover all home meals with hot sauce or tomato sauce..yes he’s a Vietnam vet - 22 years former ADF infantry/ordnance ..then ppl was dried packs..52years married in June..😂🤪💕

Things have improved since 74-94 when I was doing that job ! A proper bain-marie out bush ? Hot boxes that are not battered and broken ? But still the same choofers apparently?

I will never forget the first time I saw that melted, weeping, soggy looking tomato in a hotbox at Kapooka...it was probably the most traumatizing thing from basic training, does anybody actually like those breakfast tomatoes?
I joined the army in the mid eighties. At the time we called cook’s fitters and turners. Fit it into pots and turned it into shit. The standard of food was woe full.

Never have i ever....always ration packs....if we were real smart, we would save a tin each nite & cook a big stew at the end of exercise....now that,was good tucker.
