I've decided to make a change myself. I only have insight to problems with the environment where I live. They need to be shared before species collapse further. We are having a serious impact on our water quality here in the states due to agricultural runoff as a result of industrial agriculture. It's cheaper to spray, they think, fertilizer than to plant diverse species and properly maintain an ecosystem. I watch it get worse every year. I love the wild around me, I can not sit back and watch it be destroyed as it currently is. There is so much algae growth in the groundwater early summer that you can't see through it. Then when the growth dies after it gets hot the water turns black and smells of decay. There is a trash problem, people don't litter much but the collection process spreads it's everywhere. Simple modifications in equipment and practices is all that needs to happen to solve the problem. I have watched the change over the past 40 years and it is significant. Money is all our leaders care about, so I'm going to make it known what's transpiring. Maybe if more are aware of the problem, lots more people can join the movements that need to take place. I never watched your channel, just a random suggested video. I'm glad I watched it. I have 0 experience with RUclips other than watching. I would appreciate any help that you may be able to offer for advise on how I start. I clean and maintain the surrounding area but it's just a cycle of repeat. Recent flooding made trash that was not reachable, a plastic bag filled with plastic wrapping 60ish liters. It was in the ditch that feeds a pond system for around a year before I fished it out. It was very slimy and had a few different colored things growing on it. I handled it with 2 fingers on either hand, because it grossed me out. I emptied the water from it and began riding my bike to the trash bin, about a minute after contact I started feeling like I was being bitten by a bunch of mosquitoes anywhere I touched the bag. The more time passes the worse it itched, so I went home to rinse off whatever was on me. That didn't work so I washed my hands and arms really well. Nothing was helping, I figured it was some awful bacteria and took a very hot shower after doseing my hands with 90% isopropyl alcohol. It was the worst sensation I've ever had. This video just showed up in my feed. I am an older female American who has always loved owls. Your 30 years of dedicated work to save these adorable and IMPORTANT little owls gives me some faith in humanity, or at least some of humanity. I am spending my remaining money and years on feeding my backyard birds and squirrels, supporting bird and wildlife conservation efforts, supporting exotic bird sanctuaries in Canada and the U.S. (because these intelligent birds should have never been taken from the wild, but here we are with a crisis of abused and abandoned “pets”), and financially helping individuals who are struggling to keep the birds they care for healthy and happy. You are doing so much in Germany. The strength and commitment of our youth is what we need to save species like the little owl and their ecosystems. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing the story of such an amazing project. Much more people need to be aware about what these little birds mean to our eco systems.
@@planet-wild Tip #1: Brings lots of patience to the field. Other than that. Instead of looking for the owl itself at first, listen if there are other birds responding to a possible bird of prey in the area with danger calls and then close in on the area. You can potentially see it flying away from you. On top of that getting familiar with the area is optimal. Lots of scouting for trees that have everything a little owl needs. Thick leaves as cover, open well visible branches for sunbathing or perching and a hole or cave to hide and nest in. In areas where the ground isnt covered in tall grass, looking for "remains" can help too. Lots of white spots on or around trees, as well as the remains of mice mark popular resting spots. Even though most people expect them to be active throughout the night or dawn, they can spotted sitting quite open in branches, going through their cleaning routines mid day or even hunt for some lunch. It took me years or learning these things myself...I hope its just a little something to speed up the process for others.
@@planet-wild I'm quite content with my location. I looked up little owl and I probably do not hear them as they are the Steinkauz. We have them here, too, but given the population difference between this one and the more common Waldkauz (Kauz is just a more round type of owl) whose English name is tawny owl, I think I'm hearing (and rarely seeing ) the Waldkauz. In my county, which used to be an independent German state and only lost its status under Austrian mustache man and after a short reexistance under British occupation, we even have another forest which has never been cut down. I also loved the idea with the Steinkauz project in general. Practical environment protection with clear achievable goals and no political ideology attached. It's something we need more of.
I live at the countryside and it is full of them here, I love them so much, at night to hear them... but because there are so many, some of my neighbours got angry of hearing them and have cut illegally trees that used to have nests, trees that are protected basically by law.
This video brought big smile to my face; thank goodness for organizations and individuals who are helping nature heal and thrive. We need to live in harmony with nature to survive as humankind.

Yes, that's a way to put it 🦉💚🌳
That harmony is quite fugacious.

Same here, dual citizen born in St Vincent (another caribbean island) living in the UK. It’s brilliant that things like this are happening. We need more of this across the globe, there are many species here that are dying out at an alarming rate as well.
The family rewilding idea is absolutely brilliant, amazing work!
Thanks! 🦉💚
It's very interesting to see that German people describe nerdy people as "Kauzik", because in Russian-speaking countries we also have a saying about nerdy people "Сидеть за компьютером как сыч", which one can roughly translate into English as "To sit at your computer like a Little Owl"
Funny how a lot of people from different countries collectively decided that this bird is basically an epitome of nerdiness for some reason, lol.
That’s interesting! 🤓
that's really funny yeah ☺

...would these precious beings be in Arizona by chance? There is this lovely family of owls that look similar close to where I live. I wake up every day, carefully drive by them, making coo sounds and telling them in a child like voice that I love them.
They make me feel grateful of life. I only feel connected with Earth because of them and my spark of divinity that I believe to be God's bond to us. And I am trying so hard to stay here. But living is painful to me. But I just wish to be close with these creatures.
🦉Love it and so cute! I just learned that Little Owls often re-use old nests from other birds, like magpies or crows. They're like the ultimate little recyclers in nature! ♻
Indeed! 🦉There are really many fascinating facts about these creatures! Thanks a lot for your support💚
Thank you.
Thanks so much for being an inspiration! 💚It's just fantastic to hear the works you are doing! The world definitely needs more people like you, who work for the good of the Planet! We're happy to have you on our channel 😊💚
I helped my dad in the 90s to set up bird boxes for Tengmalm's Owls (Rauhfußkauz) in the near forrests and control them every year. We also mapped breeding territories. I miss these times, but I am happy every time I can hear an owl in the night. It is good to see your dedication, godspeed!
Thanks for sharing! We are always delighted to hear this kind of stories. 😊💚
To think that those owls are probably from the ones you have taken care of, I wonder how much joy that would give
Wow, what an inspiring journey! The dedication and hard work put into the Little Owl's comeback is truly commendable. It's heartening to see how innovation and perseverance can help restore biodiversity and bring back endangered species. This video is a testament to the power of collective efforts in conservation. Can't wait to see more updates on the Little Owl's progress. Keep up the great work, Planet Wild! And yes, OMG they are sooo cute indeed 🙂🦉🌳🌍

We were lucky enough to have a little family for a few years and absolutely fell in love with them. Unfortunately their favourite trees collapsed from old age, one after another, and one day they were gone. So sad. We used to love their company and seeing them around. Hope to see them again some day. Loved their big eyes and feathered feet! 😍🦉
Oh, that's sad to hear. No new trees were planted there?
Hope you'll have a chance to see them one day!🦉

The little owl was introduced here in the UK in the 1800's and we have around 6000 pairs which isn't a lot. I live in the east midlands and i see them now and then and they are beautiful.

This makes me appreciate the area I live in so much more. As a wildlife photographer and owl enthusiast I can now happily count 5+ territories of little owl families that I found, just in my town. Thank you for sharing the story of such an amazing project. Much more people need to be aware about what these little birds mean to our eco systems.
Oh wow, that's amazing! They are not that easy to spot. What are your tips for those who want to spot them? 🦉
@@FarmAndTrainfreak These are incredible tips! Thanks so much for sharing! 🙏
I often hear them at night. I live in rural Germany and a forest is like 150m away from my house. The most common one is called Waldkauz
Sounds like a dream to be leaving so close to the forest and hearing the owls! 🤩🦉💚
