The “Varric was right” option leads to... rounding on a furious Cassandra and telling her she is *wrong.* My heart stopped. Why would I do that?! A polite, “Cassandra, I think Varric was in the right here, please can we talk about this,” was what I was envisioning, not throwing myself in the path of a rampaging bear! Who in their right mind?!

Right? I was playing this game (to be fair it was ridiculously shit) and, at first, the dialogue options nicely summarised what the dialogue actually was. As the game continued... “I’m so sorry”, me thinking it was about this poor character’s friends being murdered and me saying “I’m so sorry for your loss” actually became “I’m so sorry they had to put up with you. Thank god they’re dead” or something. Then the game forces romance so what seems like a neutral “Stop talking” somehow becomes flirting ??? Weird ass game.
This is bad, but imagine it giving you options where NONE of them are good. Like what degree of fail to you want the conversation to be. 1. Bad 2. Very Bad 3. Welp, nice knowing you, catastrophically bad.
Okay, I admit it. I injected the serum into the water supply because I thought it would mercy kill all the super mutants who had obviously lost their minds, but all it did was make a bunch of humans sick and my dad is still dead and I killed Cassidy because she was mad at me for stealing from the NCR and Caesars Legion. Also I opened up Mr. Houses pod by accident. :(

I also killed both caesars legion and the ncr in the end with a robot army, so there is officially nobody left alive to hate me because I killed everyone who crossed me. I also helped that group of super mutants who were trying to live peacefully in the mountains. But, the most important thing, Grandma is still alive! :D And she loves me no matter who I steal from or mass genocide

Legit my first time playing fallout 4, first time I’d played a fallout game, get to this encounter where some thieves are trying to rob some people who are in an old diner or something. I try to side with the people in the diner against the thieves and yet somehow end up sided with the thieves. Suffice to say I reloaded my last save.
"Tell him off" In context, you might think it means "Tell this guy to back off because he's being too aggressive and hostile". It turns out to actually be "not only insult him, but also betray the fact that his partner confided in you that she had considered leaving him"

that's what tell them off means, the definition on urban dictionary is "to bitch at someone about something stupid they did, or to bitch at for something they did that annoyed you.", I know not everyone is a native english speaker, and not every english speaker can be expected to know every phrase and what it means, but I would say that one's on you, it's a pretty common phrase.

In The Wolf Among Us there's a scene where someone (it's been a long time, i don't remember) is explaining herself and I picked "I don't care", thinking it would be like "You don't have to explain, it's ok" but he basically went "OMG nobody cares about your problems bitch shut the fuck up" so yeah
Yeah, got to side with the others. 'I don't care' is very different than 'it doesn't matter'/'you don't have to explain'. Most games usually have that figured out.
God, that's literally just like the Fallout 4 dialogue! It would say something completely different than what it gave you! Unlike past Bethesda RPGs where the dialogue option was the exact thing you would say.

At least in DA2 and 3 we got the alignment of the sentences... Sorta. Then you end up pissing off someone because you were too sarcastic, or you wanted to be just but ended up as being a dictator, or you wanted to be nice but ended up saying that blood magic is cute.

I don’t think they’re lazy. I mean they spent so much time to animate each interaction. Create detailed models. Have voice overs that match the movement of the character’s mouth. Create sophisticated code that produces certain outcomes and rendered scenes. There’s a lot of hard work in that. I think the developers create vague options and ones that sound good so that you click on them and get a bad outcome. It’s either trolling or they want you to take that path. Idk, that’s what I believe. I mean there are subtitles of the conversation, so someone had to write what they are saying. So the developers could have easily copied and pasted some parts of the subtitles conversation into the choices.
It is laziness, it’s a product of poor player testing. You have to know how a human looking at the lines for the first time will read them, and that requires testing to refine. It’s entirely on the writer, and it’s the kind of work that sucks out joy and leaves only vague dissatisfaction. If they don’t do it, it shows.

I know the pain. Dragon Age player here, and even though I’ve played Dragon Age since 2009 I still save before every conversation with my companions. I’ve played the games a lot so I like to skip during the conversation, and it’s extremely difficult to skip and not mess up in DA 2 where I only romance Fenris. Looking at you creepy ass Anders trying to trip me up. Blondie, it’s not happening, ever. Let my Hawke get her happy ending with the broody elf.

At this point, I can't go through any important or impactful dialogue in these kinds of games without feeling so much anxiety. The other day, I was playing a game and the main character was going through a lot and the buddy was trying to talk to him about it and one of the options was to respond to that was "Attack him" And I was like, bitch like hell I'm going to attack the one character who wasn't being a douche. I thought my main character was actually going to physically attack the friend. Turns out it just meant the the main character was just going to lash out with his words. Not that it makes it a good option, but definitely better than what I originally thought.
The production quality on these is impressive, especially given that it seems like you only just recently started doing skits like these on your channel.

I like that the character says something a little different than the choices. Makes me wonder how the character would really say it. I just wish the text they give you beforehand wasn't so misleading

Reminded me more of Mass Effect Andromeda.
Legit my first time playing fallout 4, first time I’d played a fallout game, get to this encounter where some thieves are trying to rob some people who are in an old diner or something. I try to side with the people in the diner against the thieves and yet somehow end up sided with the thieves.
Suffice to say I reloaded my last save.
Pearl. They weren’t thieves, it’s just the people in the diner refused to pay them for... drugs...

that's what tell them off means, the definition on urban dictionary is "to bitch at someone about something stupid they did, or to bitch at for something they did that annoyed you.", I know not everyone is a native english speaker, and not every english speaker can be expected to know every phrase and what it means, but I would say that one's on you, it's a pretty common phrase.

This is what happens when a game developer is too lazy to write out exactly what your character will say when you clock that option.
They're just trolls.
I don’t think they’re lazy. I mean they spent so much time to animate each interaction. Create detailed models. Have voice overs that match the movement of the character’s mouth. Create sophisticated code that produces certain outcomes and rendered scenes. There’s a lot of hard work in that. I think the developers create vague options and ones that sound good so that you click on them and get a bad outcome. It’s either trolling or they want you to take that path. Idk, that’s what I believe. I mean there are subtitles of the conversation, so someone had to write what they are saying. So the developers could have easily copied and pasted some parts of the subtitles conversation into the choices.
It is laziness, it’s a product of poor player testing. You have to know how a human looking at the lines for the first time will read them, and that requires testing to refine. It’s entirely on the writer, and it’s the kind of work that sucks out joy and leaves only vague dissatisfaction. If they don’t do it, it shows.

I know the pain. Dragon Age player here, and even though I’ve played Dragon Age since 2009 I still save before every conversation with my companions. I’ve played the games a lot so I like to skip during the conversation, and it’s extremely difficult to skip and not mess up in DA 2 where I only romance Fenris. Looking at you creepy ass Anders trying to trip me up. Blondie, it’s not happening, ever. Let my Hawke get her happy ending with the broody elf.

At this point, I can't go through any important or impactful dialogue in these kinds of games without feeling so much anxiety. The other day, I was playing a game and the main character was going through a lot and the buddy was trying to talk to him about it and one of the options was to respond to that was
"Attack him"
And I was like, bitch like hell I'm going to attack the one character who wasn't being a douche. I thought my main character was actually going to physically attack the friend.
Turns out it just meant the the main character was just going to lash out with his words. Not that it makes it a good option, but definitely better than what I originally thought.
