  • NEW Canon R5 camera, but how can you get the best out of the RAW files? When I opened my EOS R5 Bird Photography RAW images in Photoshop, they looked nothing like on the back of the camera, so I needed to find a different solution to get great looking final images! I tried a few options and finally found a workflow that works for me. After I show you my new RAW workflow, I will show you how I edit my rosella image that I took in my last video.
    What programs are you using to edit your images? Have you encountered a similar problem with the R5?
    Here's Part 1 of this video, where I take the images and share some new R5 discoveries

    Excellent video, love the way you stick to the point. Thank you for sharing, I was never really a bird photographer but you have changed my mind, I came here to get information on the R5. Your images are stunning. And crop one definitely, I know you cut his tail off because you thought you were only doing a head shot but it doesn't seem to hurt the image.

    OMG, I LOVE YOU!! You have saved my sanity. I have had my R5 for around 2 months and I thought I was going crazy, as I couldn't get the colours to look right. I tried calibrating my screen and applying presets to counter act the awful flat greyed out tones and nothing worked. You now have a very appreciative subscriber. Your photos are amazing. Thank you so much for making this content!

    I'm amazed. Been using Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop to process my photos for several years. Got my R5 a few months ago and didn't change my workflow, but noticed my RAW images seem darker and flatter than with my old 5DM4. I watched this video and then did my own comparison on a couple of images between ACR and DPP4. The difference is remarkable -- PP4 gives me a brighter image with better colors that more closely the R5 image I captured. Thanks so much. Updating my workflow -- now need to get familiar with DPP4

    Thanks as always for the informative video. So far I've been using the dng converter to get lightroom to see them and using the sliders to bring out the colors but I definitely will try DPP. My only suggestion is if you have Photoshop 2020 or 2021, don't avoid Select Subject any longer. That and select and mask (if it's needed) is SOO much better then previous versions. I've used with tough backgrounds and been amazed how well it does.

    Hi Jan, another great video, thanks for the tip with DPP4, I have not been using it much since it is really slow with my R5 images, so I have been using camera raw. I dont have the colorful birds you have which makes a big difference in my editing, plus I have an editing for free posts (instagram) which is a bit more casual than my edit for print/sale. As to your question on crop I would initially say 1 but you dont have the full tail feathers in the shot which makes me lean towards crop 2 for those great head details. Thanks again for all the info

    Brilliant stuff Jan Thanks for sharing. First of all I was not aware of Fast Stone Viewer, I am using Breeze Browser Pro. Fast Stone is better and free. Great tip! Thank you. Regarding, DPP I often gave it a quick try but never liked it for all the reasons you mentioned in your video but hey , if Jan uses it in his workflow, I will give it another try. So I did and I totally agree, I love the work it does when applying profile and sharp/noise adjustments to my images. The colors are so much vibrant and clean right off the bat. But that is about where my happiness with the DPP stops... making any small changes to the exposure of the images or anything like this is as slow as molasse. DPP is so irresponsive it is impossible to see if the corrections you apply make any sense. Transferring only one file into Photoshop is so slow it takes several minutes ... like over 5 minutes. this is crazy... My computer has 32gb of ram and a fairly good Graphic Card (Quadro Pro 2000) and a decent processer Core i7-4820 K... I never struggle processing Canon R5 files in Lightroom or Photoshop but adding that tiny bit of DPP in the mix is a torture I can't sustain. What a shame, to see how much better your image could get but make the tool totally impractical ... Frustrating.... I searched the internet over the last couple of days as to how I can solve the DPP performance issue but I have not been able to find a suitable solution.... All I am interested in is the Colour Profile and perhaps the noise/sharpening functionality of DPP, so if you have heard of a solution or an alternative, please let me know. Thanks for sharing this as always watching your video is always time well spent!

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  3 года назад

      I can't say I am a DPP fan, but it does the best job, so let's call it a necessary evil hehe.
      Yes, I sometimes wonder if DPP froze crashed, because changes take SOOOOOOO long! Transferring the Tif takes maybe 30sec for me.
      If I can I avoid DPP, but for some birds like this rosella I have to use it.

    Thanks for the video. I just picked up the Color Fidelity profiles two days ago. Mine are version 4, but I see similar results to what you saw. Basically they are better than the Adobe profiles, but not as good as the Camera specific profiles that worked great with the 5d4. I'm torn between attempting my own profiles, using DPP or just finding another way. I also agree that I don't want to buy any new software.

    Really informative video thank you. I am going to spend more time going through this and can see me going on to your Masterclass videos
    With regards to the difficulties with colour in Adobe, the colour profiles for the R5, R6 and the 1DXIII for Adobe Camera Raw have still not been released. I guess that’s why you’re having more success with the colours using DPP4 instead of ACR. The only way around this is, as you say, to create your own profiles. I bought an X-Rite Colour Checker Passport on eBay and using X-Rites software produced my own, it was actually very simple to do. Once again thank you for the video on this and also on the settings for the R5 for bird photography.

    Just saw another video about LR Calibration. Suggest you experiment in the calibration section by increasing the Blue saturation to 100% and save as preset along with other settings such as lens & chromatic aberration turned on and use this preset on import. Interestingly it makes the red & yellows pop subtlly... and if the blue does go overboard then in the HSL section pull the blue saturation back a bit (often needed on a blue cloudless sky). I've been experimenting and this technique seems to get the colors to pop, and my experience is rarely to I have to dial back the blue calibration.

    For me I guess option 1, the full image I like the most, it's nicely framed with the wings and tail coming out from the corner
    Question though, do you notice a big difference in the 12bit against the 14 bit images out of the R5 ?

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  3 года назад

      I don't like it, yet in this one I didn't mind it somehow. It put the focus right in the most interesting parts. The problem with all long-tailed birds is that once you include the tail, it can often throw the composition and make the actual bird quite small in the frame

  • @rogerdoyle4783

Is there a setting that allows the removal of parts of the mask while protecting the areas you which to remain masked?

    Great video, Jan! I find that I need to crop most images and usually I want the bird in the center, at least to start. Is there a way to auto detect the subject and crop in a batch even though the bird sequence is not always centered in the original frames (because the bird was flying or I panned the camera to little or too much)? I'm hoping that because that PS and LR Classic can auto-detect the subject for masking that they can do the same for mutli-image cropping at some point. This would be a huge time saver. Your thoughts? Cheers!

    One way is to use DPP 4 to apply corrections for aberration, distortion, saturation etc. Then export it as a 16 bit TIFF to process it further in Adobe.

    I've setup my R5 pretty much exactly as one of your videos (thank you !!!)...and for this past year have been using the Canon DPP4 as my sole post processing software (hearing comments on the web that it handles the canon raw file initially best, and was free). But, as you know I cannot remove an aberrant branch or do layers, and there is not allot of quality instruction for the program so I've had to guess and try things. Now I want to take it to the next level, but confused lightroom versus photoshop. Tons of people rave about lightroom, and on the backcountry gallery site there is a full video course on setup and use of lightroom. Then you offer a master class on photoshop. I don't want to waste time going down a wrong path given that the learning curve to learn lightroom or photoshop looks daunting, even before I start...so kinda stuck at the moment.

    • @jan_wegener

      Photoshop is the ultimate tool.There's no way around it, LR is nice if you want to catalogue all your images and do more general editing, but removing things like a branch etc is a million times better in Photoshop. If you want to do it right, I would recommend using Photoshop for editing. You can still use LR for RAW conversion if you want, but overall PS is the much better tool once you warp your heard around it.

    A great video Jan, very helpful, thanks!!! I have found the same as yourself....As well as the adobe profiles, the colorfidelity 3rd party profiles are also disappointing...making some colors fake/ over the top.....I don't particularly like the way DPP functions in many ways...but as you say, it is the only current option. There are some things these companies need to do...Firstly canon could really make DPP much better to use without much investment, and secondly adobe and canon need to sort out this native profile issue. I spoke to an adobe online representative and to be honest they were rude and unhelpful... They need to make a statement as to why they have not released profiles for any of the latest Canon cameras. Even the R which has been out for over a year, does not have native profiles in Adobe, making lightroom, which i have to pay for as part of the adobe package with photoshop, unusable. If i could actually get through to someone in adobe with any clout, which i can not, i would certainly be asking them how they think this is an acceptable situation.

    Very interesting. I have had an R5 for 2 weeks and set it up using your video on a friend's recommendation. I followed a few more of the videos but this is the one I found answered a key question for me - I had exposure simulation activated but when I imported into LR Classic the files looked dull and underexposed by 1/3-2/3 stop. Part of this was recovered by clicking profile corrections but not fully. I typically only use LR as I find DPP too clunky and PS too intimidating (it's an age thing). But I processed a file in DPP that I had already done in LR - the colours were better and it also looked warmer in DPP. Clearly the algorithms are very different. Now I am in a quandry. Do I persevere with the DPP I loathe and relearn PS or just carry on with LR. I am a hobby photographer - sold all my big (800/500) primes when I turned 60 and now just manage with my 100-400mkII. Decisions decisions. Excellent tutorials, Jan. Thanks for sharing. If I go down the DPP/PS route I will buy the premium video.

      Until there is a better profile for R5/R6 for Lightroom I think it’s best to do what Jan is doing here-using DPP to process RAW files with canon colors and then exporting tiff for final editing process. You simply can’t get the same results out of Lightroom or any Adobe product because Canon owns the entire pipeline so their program does a better job even if it’s crap to use. Shame.

    I really found this video very helpful and informative. After shooing RAW with a 5D Mark II for the last dozen years and editing in Lightroom Classic & Photoshop -- (much to my dismay) after purchasing the R5 I have been very disappointed with the difficulties I've encountered trying to get my images to pop in LR and PS. So much so that I thought there must be something wrong with my new camera. After researching on line, I quickly discovered that I was far from alone... and that led me to coming across your video and some questions the it brings to mind.
    I understand that the way LR deals with files and any editing done therein is nondestructive, but what I don't know is this. By copying the files to the SSD as I import them via LR, am I inadvertently letting LR alter these CR3 files in any way, or are they still pristine Canon CR3 files that I could now import into Canon's DPP program (as you've suggested) and still realize the full potential of the files created by the R5?
    Another question came to mind as I watched your video. You may have noted, that I mentioned RAW & C-RAW files, that is because another bird photographer whose images and expertise I admire, said he could see no difference between the two file formats other than the file sizes they create. (No doubt the "C" stands for compressed and compression is more often than not associated with degrading the quality of an image) but at this point I must admit, his experience has been my own as well. Do you have any experience with C-RAW files and whether or not they truly are lossless when it comes to editing your images and the final results they yield?
    I appreciate your time, help and expertise as well as the superb images you capture and create.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  3 года назад +1

      AFAIK LR does not touch the actual cr3 files. It just creates a different file that saves your edits.

    My understanding from some more recent videos is that now, for the R5, you are using DxO Pure Raw instead of DPP for RAW image processing, is that right?

      I use Pure RAW for noise reduction and Camera RAW with my own profiles for Raw conversion
      Dpp still does a good job, just slow

    Helpful video. You referred to a video on shooting in the backyard during lockdown. Could you provide the name of that video, please? Thank you for the Nik reference.
