Bird Photography IMAGE EDITING - Edit Your Images! - Here's Why - Jan Wegener

  • Why should we edit our bird images? Well, the answer is simple. Our cameras have severely limited sensors and thus all bird photography RAW files (Jpegs) we capture are just a compromise and we use image editing to bring back all the details and colours missed, so that the birdphotography images look like what we saw with our eyes in the field. But where can you get started? What are the right tools? Which programs to use? How do I edit my bird images?
    Don't dismiss editing or fall into the " straight out of camera" trap. Editing is needed and I want to show you why and how you can do it.
    Let's find out!
    Check out my Masterclass on Image Editing!

    I am half way through Jan's Masterclass, for me it has changed my approach and also filled in the blanks that other experts leave out. It's these 'blank filling moments' that puts this Masterclass above the rest !!

    Kudos on your statement about using images “straight out of the camera”. I think that was an idea started early as digital was gaining favor, and many had no idea what Photoshop was or how to use it. The legend Ansel Adams would develop his negatives by inspection an sometimes blow on certain areas to affect the development of that area! 🤩

      Bernard Gandy you can still use Lightroom for your raw conversion and catalogue and then just do more editing in PS like I do. It’s kinda similar to ACR and then you get the best of both worlds. I just find Lightroom a bit bloated and use a slightly faster workflow

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  4 года назад +1

      Hi, sure I can. I am usually on AWB, because I can adjust the white balance of any RAW file during the raw conversion, so it doesn't really matter. And I prefer not to change the WB in the field all the time. Picture style also only matter if you are shooting Jpegs or video. When you are shooting RAW, the picture style is not applied. (unless you are using Canon's software, but you can still change it after the fact). So I just have it on neutral.

    I use ViewNX-i "Nikon User", to see what images I want to keep, delete the ones I don't, then save them to a folder and use DXOPhotoLab2 "in DXO I clone the original NEF file and do all my PP on the cloned NEF file, then export it as a TIFF to Affinity Photo to finish my PP. In regards to cleaning up the noise, DXO does a great job up to 1000-2000 ISO, if the image has an ISO higher than 1K I clean it up with DXO Prime noise reduction, and clean it up some more in Affinity Photo $30 on sale as I type this" which also has a fantastic ISO cleaning filter. I also have the Nik filters, haven't used them in a while.

    Hello Jan. Have you used any other editing programs like Exposure X5 wich is a lot cheaper to use? Lightroom is quite expensive for the little I do.
    I was really looking faward to doing your editing course but I'm not sure it's worth paying $170 per year for Lightroom. But if you think it's better for editing bird photoes than other programs than I will go with it. What are your thorts?

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  3 года назад +1

      Hi,
      it has always been Photoshop for me. I don't use Lightroom much either. Mainly FastStone Image Viewer (free) to view files and then Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop. (Acr is essentially the same RAW processing engine as Lightroom).
      I never dabbled much in free software, cause Photoshop could do what I needed an then some. In all free programs I always discovered some sort of limitations that I don't have in Photoshop. So if you can afford it, I would recommend the Adobe PS/LR bundle.
      In my Masterclass I use the process I mentioned above on ACR and Photoshop, because it's fast and the best way I have found to make my images look great. I hope that helps.
