- When it comes to what makes a perfect bird image in bird photography, there always seems to be a bit of confusion. I know that everyone has a different taste when it comes to bird photography, but I think there are 7 Elements that make the perfect bird image and make your bird photography images stand out.
Understanding these will allow you to look different at your current and future images and might help to develop your own bird photography style.

Great advice! I love photographing birds, but maybe one in 200 photos actually look appealing to me. Now I have a better handle on what gives the aesthetics I want to capture.

Would be interested to share he set up of your 5DmIV i.e. what recommended custom functions/shortcut buttons you use for ISO, shutter speed, AF points etc to make that simple as possible. as well as how to manage 'heat haze' which I experience for the first time a week ago trying to shoot a family of Emus in west Queensland, Happy New Year to you as well, Rochelle
Rochelle Uechtritz yes, good idea. Unfortunately there’s no fix for heat haze except waiting for it to get cooler

Was terribly disappointed not being able to focus and had heard how heat haze creates havoc, now I know there was nothing I could have done better! Have a fabulous 2020. Adore your work.

Verry helpful Jan. There are so many things to think about. The hardest bit for me is getting good bright back grounds. My lens seemed to show up any trees or shadowed in thw back ground even if they are out 300m.
Yes that can be a big challenge. Trees are often tricky to dissolve fully

Very good video, there are many similar videos, but they do not group the points as you have, ie Basics (3-4 points under basics). That way you have included in reality more than seven points. Perhaps add - watch the frame for protruding branches - to the point about Backgrounds. There are people who do not like flash, however I find it is of immense value when you understand how and when to use flash. Very nice images to illustrate your points as well both positively and negatively. The point about the Auto ISO definitely improves your % keepers especially if you are shooting from the hip. ( walking around and shooting as you see and find birds).
Thank you! Hehe, yes that might be cheating a little bit on my part. But I see all of the basics, using your camera, sharpness, as the fundamental requirement and just as one whole point. Master these and then move on to the next points. Thanks for your comment Krik, good points! I agree that Auto ISO can be great, but gives control back to the camera, which I sometimes find not as good.
@@jan_wegener I do not regard it as cheating, problem is that there are so many tips to get through it would make the video too long. I think it is a good solution to keep your video short yet not skip the points. One I do find you have missed out on is the eye highlight, perhaps link it to one of your other points, maybe the XFactor is a good link!
Kirk West you mean the catchlight? If you are going for the right head pose and shoot in decent light you always have it automatically. Like I don’t have one image without it. Whether it’s flashed or not

Peg Runyan then it’s not manual anymore. I don’t see the point 😉
I always use auto ISO in manual mode, reason is I move around, I don't stand in one particular location.
@@jfphotography69 It can help, but even then I like to stay in manual. And just switch real quick between settings
@@jan_wegener I guess it is a compromise, but I miss less shots and I get better exposure with auto iso. Maybe I need to practice changing setting quicker or find that fountain of youth!
@@pegrunyan9506 in the end whatever works best for you, you should use. Cause it will give you the best results. Auto ISo is basically like a safety blanket. So nothing wrong with it at all. It just gives a bit of decision making to the camera, which I personally don't like

I have the same camera and lens setup as you. I use the Zomei Q555 tripod.
Check out Neewer brand carbon fiber tripod, its only $89.99 on amazon. Very lightweight and compact. Comes with a ball head, I bought a Neewer gimbal for about $80, so far everything has worked well for me. Gimbal is a little tight, some people have taken the grease out and replaced it with a lighter grease. Definitely worth the money though.

Depends on behavior and environment. With Hawaii's endemics eye level and your own perch are pretty much out of the question. I just find a tree with their food on it, decent branches and backgrounds. Then just wait and hope to get lucky

Hopefully you are not being affected by the fires down there. How you you get the birds to pose properly for you? Right now I’m shooting birds in the wild, not using a perch, and they seem to perfer hiding behind branches or facing the trees.
Thanks Jeffrey, not too bad here, just lots of smoke. getting the right pose is a lot about knowing birds, and anticipating what they will do next. A lot of times the best pose is right after the birds land.

@Iconoclast Pleonast All of these tips are applicable to people with $100-10K setups. I have many lovely bird images using my older Canon T3i and 70-300mm setup. This can be especially true if you watch Jan's videos on how he does his backyard setups.

I don't use man made perches, I use natural perches and birds shot in their natural habitat, no bird feeders around.
I also try to avoid using flash.
There's many different ways to get nice bird image
sorry but I don't like your pictures: they are flat, opaque, no light no shadows, with fake colors, they looks like paintings and not photos, backgrounds are boring and unnatural, and that beige color is absurd. Birds live among trees, branches and leaves so it is right these elements appear in the pictures
We all have our own tastes and styles :) That beige colour is everywhere in Australia. It's sand and dry grass.
