Another great video. Although I find myself as an experienced wildlife photographer your videos often add interesting new aspects to be used in the field - thanks!
Steen Torner that’s awesome to hear and exactly what I try to achieve with my videos 😊
Great video anda súper cool advices!!! Thanks!!!!
thank you!!
Thanks again, I am still on basic #1!!! One day I may get there, I tend at the moment to hunt birds and try and get them as they are, rather than set up a situation, I may have to do that one day in my yard. All the best.
Peter Kemp yes, it’s all a process. I took me many years to get the images I really wanted
Thank you so much for this video , i really improve my birds photography..
awesome!
Dying to see your editing tips!
Jennifer Battalin I will be doing some content on that soon
Mate this was amazing, a must watch for any bird photographer from any experience level. This will be a fantastic resource for anyone interested in photographing birds. BTW that Major Mitchell pair is ridiculous.
Thank you Duade, I had this idea a couple weeks ago. It was actually really hard to find all the examples. Your Jackies were immensely helpful
Great Vid!!
Ethan Harry thanks!
Very good video thank you
glad you liked it!
Another great video Jan, the area I have to work on is the perch ( and shooting a little wider). Thanks
Glad I could give you some pointers Ruben!
Thanks for the great Video Jan and happy new year. İf you make your next video on how to attract birds on a perch and give some hints that would be fantastic
I will keep that in mind. I have already written a very detailed ebook about that topic
Always great stuff. Just got you ebook and longer video. Very helpful. I just wish I could find those little clips you use on perches. All back ordered in USA.
John Eastmond thanks! You can try on the novoflex website. It’s a novoflex Sta-set plus and extra ball head and clamp
Wow I should move to Australia. Your birds are so colorful over there!
We have some stunners for sure! You can start with a visit :D
just watch out for the snakes, they got some of the deadliest...:)
@@edgaralegre9725 Good point ... the deadliest animal we have here is ... well, none actually.
Great tips!
thanks!
@@jan_wegener could you also do a video on tips for editing? :)
@ yes I will
Great advice! I love photographing birds, but maybe one in 200 photos actually look appealing to me. Now I have a better handle on what gives the aesthetics I want to capture.
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome Video,
Amazing Images,
And those perches, are they real, wow
sure are, glad you liked the video
You have the most colorful amazing birds by you ! Thanks for the tips ... can u show how to best make a perch ? Is it best to attract with bird food or water 💦... happy new year !
John NYC ; ] thank you! I made a video about perches and one to attract birds. Have a look. I also wrote an ebook that goes into full detail on both topics
Thank you for your time and energy sharing your expertise. Brilliant reminder on all the elements, especially the XFactor. Would be interested to share he set up of your 5DmIV i.e. what recommended custom functions/shortcut buttons you use for ISO, shutter speed, AF points etc to make that simple as possible. as well as how to manage 'heat haze' which I experience for the first time a week ago trying to shoot a family of Emus in west Queensland, Happy New Year to you as well, Rochelle
Rochelle Uechtritz yes, good idea. Unfortunately there’s no fix for heat haze except waiting for it to get cooler
@@jan_wegener Thank you. It was such a fabulous composition of father and seven teenagers in a harvested field whilst travelling. Was terribly disappointed not being able to focus and had heard how heat haze creates havoc, now I know there was nothing I could have done better! Have a fabulous 2020. Adore your work.
Rochelle Uechtritz yes it can be very frustrating
nice ideas
Arise Rayamangalam thanks
Verry helpful Jan. There are so many things to think about. The hardest bit for me is getting good bright back grounds. My lens seemed to show up any trees or shadowed in thw back ground even if they are out 300m.
Yes that can be a big challenge. Trees are often tricky to dissolve fully
Excellent tips, as an aspiring bird photographer I appreciate the help! Also beautiful birds, what region of the world are you shooting this video in?
TheTravelBird thanks! Australia
Hi Jan , love all your video you do. Got a fast question, what brand and model bracket you use for you better Beamer.
William Branson glad you like them! It’s all wimberley. Details on my blog
aviscapes.com/flash-settings-and-accessories/
Love all your videos, Jan! Do you have any plans to share your photo editing process?
Yes that will be a big part this year, just need to get set up
@@jan_wegener Awesome! Looking forward to it!
Yes it did .
:)
Great video! So much information helpful to bird photographers packed into one video. What was the name of that Spike with the hammer top and clips on it that you use to hold purchase sometimes? Thanks for any info and best of luck to you in 2020.
*perches
Glad you find it helpful mate! It's a Novoflex Sta-Set
@@jan_wegener thank you so much! Together with other things I've learned from you and the other generous photographers on RUclips that piece of gear will help improve my photos I'm sure.
@@ForrestWest great!
@@jan_wegener just told him to come back in a bit but we 7
Very good video, there are many similar videos, but they do not group the points as you have, ie Basics (3-4 points under basics). That way you have included in reality more than seven points. Perhaps add - watch the frame for protruding branches - to the point about Backgrounds. There are people who do not like flash, however I find it is of immense value when you understand how and when to use flash. Very nice images to illustrate your points as well both positively and negatively. The point about the Auto ISO definitely improves your % keepers especially if you are shooting from the hip. ( walking around and shooting as you see and find birds).
Thank you! Hehe, yes that might be cheating a little bit on my part. But I see all of the basics, using your camera, sharpness, as the fundamental requirement and just as one whole point. Master these and then move on to the next points. Thanks for your comment Krik, good points! I agree that Auto ISO can be great, but gives control back to the camera, which I sometimes find not as good.
@@jan_wegener I do not regard it as cheating, problem is that there are so many tips to get through it would make the video too long. I think it is a good solution to keep your video short yet not skip the points. One I do find you have missed out on is the eye highlight, perhaps link it to one of your other points, maybe the XFactor is a good link!
Kirk West you mean the catchlight? If you are going for the right head pose and shoot in decent light you always have it automatically. Like I don’t have one image without it. Whether it’s flashed or not
Thanks so much, great info! What is your opinion of using manual settings with auto iso?
Peg Runyan then it’s not manual anymore. I don’t see the point 😉
I always use auto ISO in manual mode, reason is I move around, I don't stand in one particular location.
@@jfphotography69 It can help, but even then I like to stay in manual. And just switch real quick between settings
@@jan_wegener I guess it is a compromise, but I miss less shots and I get better exposure with auto iso. Maybe I need to practice changing setting quicker or find that fountain of youth!
@@pegrunyan9506 in the end whatever works best for you, you should use. Cause it will give you the best results. Auto ISo is basically like a safety blanket. So nothing wrong with it at all. It just gives a bit of decision making to the camera, which I personally don't like
Hi Jan! Happy new year!
I own Canon 800D with Tamron 150-600mm G2.
Now I'm looking for a cheap and reliable tripod, I'm searching for cheap because I put all I got on the lens...
Please suggest a tripod with a ball head if possible.
Thank you!
Hey, thank you! What do you consider cheap?
I have the same camera and lens setup as you. I use the Zomei Q555 tripod.
Check out Neewer brand carbon fiber tripod, its only $89.99 on amazon. Very lightweight and compact. Comes with a ball head, I bought a Neewer gimbal for about $80, so far everything has worked well for me. Gimbal is a little tight, some people have taken the grease out and replaced it with a lighter grease. Definitely worth the money though.
Great videos Jan. Do you guide photographer to the places where you take those pictures?
Mieczyslaw Kuzma yes, I can organise tours
@@jan_wegener what would be the best time for Australian Robins?
Mieczyslaw Kuzma winter is best for the majority. Spring for pink and rose
@@jan_wegener Winter, that means July-August. Spring means September-October. Correct?
@@mieczyslawkuzma3739 yes, June-August
Depends on behavior and environment. With Hawaii's endemics eye level and your own perch are pretty much out of the question. I just find a tree with their food on it, decent branches and backgrounds. Then just wait and hope to get lucky
That can work as well
Hopefully you are not being affected by the fires down there. How you you get the birds to pose properly for you? Right now I’m shooting birds in the wild, not using a perch, and they seem to perfer hiding behind branches or facing the trees.
Thanks Jeffrey, not too bad here, just lots of smoke. getting the right pose is a lot about knowing birds, and anticipating what they will do next. A lot of times the best pose is right after the birds land.
Where do purchase class???
aviscapes.com/products/ :)
Another important element is learning change your battery _fast_ .
That's why i like battery grips, so I don't have that problem very often
who the heck is the one person who disliked the video?
hahaha, there's always at least one on the internet!
@Iconoclast Pleonast I didn't really think of that until now. Still new at making videos. It's good input, thanks
@Iconoclast Pleonast He's German. We Germans have a tendency to use our hands when we speak.
@Iconoclast Pleonast All of these tips are applicable to people with $100-10K setups. I have many lovely bird images using my older Canon T3i and 70-300mm setup. This can be especially true if you watch Jan's videos on how he does his backyard setups.
@Iconoclast Pleonast All the best. 👍
I don't use man made perches, I use natural perches and birds shot in their natural habitat, no bird feeders around.
I also try to avoid using flash.
There's many different ways to get nice bird image
sorry but I don't like your pictures: they are flat, opaque, no light no shadows, with fake colors, they looks like paintings and not photos, backgrounds are boring and unnatural, and that beige color is absurd. Birds live among trees, branches and leaves so it is right these elements appear in the pictures
We all have our own tastes and styles :) That beige colour is everywhere in Australia. It's sand and dry grass.
