Duade is now my absolute favourite bird photography video creator. There’s too many others out there with huge egos and too much equipment for their own good lol. Duade is the real deal and an awesome humble dude .
You are too kind, I think there are many wonderful Photographers and RUclipsrs out there and the more that contribute the better it is for the community. Thanks again, Cheers, Duade
The birds feeding and walking towards each other is a wonderful picture, just perfectly explains what makes a bird picture stand out from just regular good quality pictures.
Yep, that last one touches my heart! You are an amazing teacher and photographer! After 50 years of loving photography, 15 of which I spent photographing seniors, I had lost the joy. Now, after discovering you, the Joy is back, I love it again, and I can’t wait to get out there every day. I just bought a Canon R7 to get myself a little more updated and I’m beginning to follow your steps thanks Duane for a new lease on my photographic life.. at age 72!
G'day Donna, what a heartwarming comment, I am so happy you have found the joy again. For me enjoying the process of getting out in nature and the possibility of seeing and photographing nature is what keeps me coming back. Have fun out there, Cheers, Duade 👍
Without doubt one of the best videos I have seen on how to take quality images. Delivered in a relaxed manner and packed with good tips. Not just well explained but good visual examples to back up the theory. Brilliant!
The two birds in the pond it absolutely beautiful. Well done. You have given me so much to think about and keep in mind while shooting. Thank you so much.
As a “just starting to get a bit serious” landscape photographer frustrated by lockdown, I have enjoyed trying bird photography in my neighbourhood. This is not just the most informative birding video I’ve seen but one the best photography videos I have watched overall. Fantastic video! Thank you so much.
I've seen all of these tips many times over, but of all the videos I've seen, this one is probably my favorite. The way the information is delivered and the examples used to demonstrate the tips is spot on.
Thank you for such in depth information, you really are a great teacher, that clearly comes from your passion. I heard another photographer say that LUCK is nothing more than, LABOR, UNDER, CORRECT, KNOWLEDGE. I believe this, we create our own luck, by listening, learning and doing the footwork. Thank you very much for sharing your photos, especially the not so good ones, it really helps me feel hopeful.
One of the best videos on bird photography I have come across in recent days which is so rich in real life experience. Appreciate the good work and a big thank you! God bless.🙏
Thank you for this excellent video. I have been watching a lot of bird photography videos during this time of lock down and social distancing and this is one of the very best. You cover not just the technical aspects to create a B photo, but the creative aspects that make an A photo. I also like that you shared your early F and D photos and explained the principle that improved your technique to get to B shots in just 7 months.
G'day Art, thank you very much for the comment and sub. Bird photography is difficult but if you follow some of the steps I outlined you will see improvement in your photos for sure. I can imagine many of us are itching to get out and visit some of our local birding spots to take photos. Cheers, Duade
5:38 I know what you mean by personal opinion, I like the photo on the right with the 'harsh' light. The main spot i take photos is in a gorge and 3 hrs before sunset the sun is completely behind the cliff. So I'm taking photos a lot with overhead light
This was very helpful, now to get it off of my notes and into my head. I have a lot to learn, and I don't have a wonderful spot like you do in Australia close to my home. Thank you so much.
I bought an R5 8 weeks ago, had to wait 4 weeks to get it. While I was waiting I've been watching lots of your videos. They are very good, you're relaxed and present the information in an easy to understand way. I just watched this video, now I'm going back to old pictures to look for good poses. Thank you very much.
G'Day Duade. Back when you made this video, the Covid restrictions were just kicking in, and they resulted for me in much more often walking in nature, which in turn unlocked my passion for birding. In these 2 years, tech evolved a lot (eye-AF, high ISO quality) while you replaced the mirror (of the DSLR) with a grey beard. But these 6 fundamentals still remain very valid !!! Thanks a lot, I was a joy watching this older of your video's !
Thanks Werner, yes, these fundamentals will always be important even as the tech changes. Yes, its funny looking back without the beard now. Cheers, Duade
Excellent video with clear explanations and terrific visual examples. The joy you find in your photography permeates the communication you share with your viewers. I count myself very fortunate to have found your channel. Thanks so much!
I’ve just started out on my bird photography journey, and the vast majority of my photos end up looking like the one you showed from the beginning of your journey. But that gives me hope that if I keep watching videos and practicing, I’ll improve as much as you did. :) Glad I found your channel...subscribed and can’t wait for more.
G'day Ashley, congrats on getting into bird photography, it really is a wonderful hobby. I hope my videos help you to improve your shots. Good luck, Cheers, Duade
Nice video, even knowing these tips and tricks, it still helps to hear them again as I think often we get immersed in certain details or objectives as photographers to the point that the basics escape our thought process. hearing them out loud from another photographer solidifies them and re-enforces the good habits we may have forgotten to focus on.
Great video! I think the photo of the Eastern Bristlebird looks amazing! I really like the light and the shadow it casts. I actually quite strongly prefer it to the morning light one you show at 5:31! Both shots are amazing of course. Also, what I like about the absolute brightest part of the day is the ability to use much higher shutterspeed, so I usually use midday when I want to catch birds in flight.
Duade Paton, Thank you very much for the wonderful, very helpful video and pictures. I will be waiting for even more A pictures of yours. Keep following your beautiful goal and keep safe!
Minus the first before birdshot, I think your before shots are really well done. All in focus and my eyes instantly went onto the birds themselves. You are very talented and I hope to be as good as you one day. I am just beginning and have a long way to go.
G'day Mazakie, thank you very much for your comment, it is great to hear you are getting into bird photography. It is a hard but very rewarding hobby. Cheers, Duade
Awesome video I like how birds photographer takes beautiful birds pictures its so satisfaing. Im started bird photography recently and it feels good when you find beautiful bird and take good picture of it.
Brilliant videos, learning so much, extremely helpful, very down to earth and honest, Duade has lovely way of putting the information over to viewer, very easy to understand, uncomplicated.
Awesome... your bird photographs are stunning. And your videos about bird photography and about the cameras and lenses you use are so helpful and full of essential information... even for a total beginner. I say your channel is easily the best on RUclips for bird photography and for all the extra in-depth information you provide on camera gear and lenses used to take world class bird photographs. Amazing
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, as a keen but new to bird photography each tip you provide is an invaluable tool to improve what knowledge I have and aspire to. Your photographs are excellent.
this video is brilliant for beginners, and I keep coming back from this video to make sure I'm still doing it right. Applying the tips in your video truly makes a lot of difference. thanks a lot.
This is such a good video. I was browsing before bed hoping for some quick tips, but it kept me engaged 100% until the end. I love videos that really speak to me like this but also hate them because after watching, I am looking through all the photos I have taken in my two years of owning a camera and understand why they're trash images now. Plus side, you've helped me set some really specific goals for myself and that is really going to hopefully be a game changer here soon. Thank you so much for this video.
Hi Laika, thank you for your lovely comment, I appreciate the feedback. I hope you learnt a few things you can apply to your own photography. Cheers, Duade 👍
You did a super job describing your six points! Using before and after images was extremely helpful to in visualizing what you were saying. So many RUclipsrs repeat themselves it makes it difficult to listen, but you did a super job! Will look forward to seeing more of your work.
Just came across this video though I've been following Duade for a while now. It's like going back in time in a time machine seeing a youthful Duade. As always, a great video to learn from :)

Great video that any aspiring bird photographer should watch. Particularly liked the tip about raising your leg when lying down to attract attention and capture eye contact. Made me laugh out loud. It works. No mention of camouflage gear or wearing dull/neutral clothing. I'm starting to find it allows you to get closer. My most important tip with bird photography is proximity to your subject. They haven't made a lens or camera that can replace proximity.
Thanks John, yes camo, blinds can come in very handy for certain species. Yes getting close is a challenge and a key aspect. I also forgot to mention the importance of the perch. Cheers, Duade
Great video Duade. I agree that just being out here is a big part of the reward - a good image is the icing on the cake. Some great tips for improving overall quality of images.
I don't mind having something in the background, behind my subject, as long as it's quite blurred, I think it adds to the overall composition. But with that being said, if I can get photos with a clean background that's what I go for. Another inspiring video Duade, thank you.
Thanks Andrew, completely agree, if I can have something in the background that helps tell a story that is great, the hard part is getting a background that isnt too distracting. Cheers, Duade
This is great, thanks for taking the time, Duade. It's awesome to find a great Aussie channel too, I'm really just starting out in wildlife photography and based on the Northern Tablelands.
G'day Ash, thanks for the feedback, I have a bit more time due to Covid, so I'm using it to make some videos. Great to hear you are getting into wildlife photography. I'm sure you have lots of birds around your way. Cheers, Duade 👍
Hello, thank you very much for the excellent recommendations, I am learning to take photos of birds, with this pandemic at a great cost and when I have a break in telework I am distracted by taking photos, a big hug from Chile.
Excellent video, great shots and no ads to distract from the message. Always a pleasures to see a fellow twitcher out admiring the bush. Tough gig getting spectacular bird shots like yours. Great work.
G'day, thanks for the comment, brought a smile to my face 😀 Yes I am very grateful to live in this country with so many different birds and habitats. Let's hope future generations get to enjoy it too. Cheers, Duade 👍

Hello, thank you very much for the excellent recommendations, I am learning to take photos of birds, with this pandemic at a great cost and when I have a break in telework I am distracted by taking photos, a big hug from Chile.
Pablo, great to hear you are enjoying your photography. Cheers, Duade
Spectacular images - thanks
G'day Richard, thanks for the comment, I'm glad you liked the images. Cheers, Duade
Your photos including the ones with you at the camera really supported the tips you described. What a great video! Thanks for making it and sharing.
