Love editing old images. My first camera was a Brownie...and I've been taking photos ever since those early 1950 days. Now retired, I finally have time to 'rescue' so many of my 'compromised' images. Working hard on culling many, from over 400,000 (literally) images cataloged on Lightroom. Love your awesome, informative, thorough and to=the=point video tutorials...especially those featuring my favorite tools, Canons, Photoshop and Lightroom. The BEST tutorials I've found to date. Working towards getting your complete Master Class. @SherryThorup
As a fairly new hobby photographer and birdwatcher this can be such a helpful resource to “save” poor quality photos. Prior to bird watching I had never used anything but my phone to take pictures. I’m looking forward to taking your Editing Masterclass soon so I can salvage some of my earlier photos. You are wonderful in explaining. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. 😊
Don't know how I missed this amazing video. You are a champ sharing so much knowledge. I have your Masterclass and combined with prosets and the masking tools you can't go wrong. The actual touch of the master is revealed however in knowing what to edit and what not! There are no prosest, masterclasses or any other short cuts I think. Only going out there and making images!
I've been using Photo AI and DxO Pure Raw to go back and re-edit some 12-year old photos that I digiscoped with a 16MP camera, and the results are truly amazing. Thanks for all the great tips!
Super Video Jan 😊 Ich glaube ich werde mir demnächst mal deinen Masterclass-Videokurs kaufen. Wird es einen Black-Friday-Deal geben? Da würde ich ohne zu überlegen zuschlagen! Tolle Arbeit, mach weiter so!
Only found your channel yesterday. From watching this video, I've found a new technique of processing my not-so-great wildlife shots. I've ordered an R5. Current camera is the 5DMKIV. Can't wait to get my hands on it. Hopefully this year I'll get out there and photograph wildlife at better angles! .... Happy New Year Jan.
Great video, with some very good advices. I for sure like to "go back in time" and look at, and edit some of my old photos. Some stunning results you got out of those photos. That Duck is just amazing, and the photo is stunning. Cheers, Bjoern
Fantastic tutorial for a novice like myself. Once I am happy with my final edits , can I save the final image in Light-room or do I need to safe on PC in my own folders? Secondly when saving images to a folder , please tell me the best way to label an image. Thanks.
Thank you Jan for sharing this with us. I will go back and check older pictures to see if I can enhance them with the new technology in Photoshop... On a rainy Sunday like today here in Switzerland this is a perfect time to spend...
I would have tried the remove tool to clean uo that second image. The thing that actually bugged me was that little stick right by the sparrow's beak. I'm glad you did something about that.
Great processing examples! Have you tried the Remove tool when removing branches? Latest versions of desktop Photoshop producing good results but same remove tool not provided in web/cloud version of Photoshop
Great instructional video. I liked the pace of this I was able to follow along. Didn’t get over my head until the photoshop section at the end - but that’s only due to my lack of PS experience
Great work as usual. I really enjoy this type of step by step video. This obviously works extremely well with RAW images but is there much one can do with old JPEG images? Thanks!
Jan, this was a very helpful and inspiring video. I purchased your masterclass a few months ago and found it difficult to follow you in some of the editing steps using layers and brushes. Have you updated your master class to include the features that are available in the current versions of Lightroom and Photoshop?
Hey, Yes understanding the concept of layers and brushes can be quite tricky. But once you wrap your head around it, it opens up amazing possibilities I have a few things planned that will build upon my current class
Thanks for another terrific video. I'd love for you to show some of the raw processing techniques for Capture One, as I've switched from LR to that program.
Great video and thank you very much for the tips and tricks. I took up the idea straight away and edited some photos with my old SLR camera, at that time not so many bird photos but rather predator and small mammal photos. Your presets also work very well with these subjects. Viele Grüße!
Hi Jan Great video, I'm 12 yrs old and taking up wildlife Photography, I have a Nikon D7000 and a Sigma 150-500, I'm saving up some money and wondering if I should upgrade to the Nikon D800 or the Nikon D4. Just wondering if you could help Kind Regards Luke
Great tips. I am amazed what I was able to get out of an 8MP image from my Canon 30D. I had a macro image of a bumble bee on a cone flower. I did some cropping to frame it properly. I was able to make a 22" x 33" print of it and it looked amazing. My current setup is the OM Systems OM-1 and the Olympus 150-400 f/4.5 lens (This lens was a new purchase, ouch) and only weighs 4.3 lbs. I also have the Olympus 100-400mm as well. I have your master class along with the Pro set and recently got the Brush Pack. I have started to go back and and re-process some of my older images and and just enjoying how much better they look now. Yeah the bufflehead is a beautiful bird and always enjoy seeing them here in Canada during the winter time. The Hooded Merganser is another beauty and has black and white on the head. So, it is hard to get a good exposure in bright light.
Great tutorial, Jan. Some very useful steps. What was most interesting was you are working with 6-8MP files from two or three generations ago, not to mention the lenses of the day. You were able to clean them up beautifully and, if you want to print them large, I’m sure the image enhance/size tools in either of LR or PS would bring them close to the quality and detail of the current generation of cameras. As much as gear junkies like me obsess about it, pixel counts are somewhat over-emphasized, especially north of 20-24MP
Yes you can definitely still get a lot out of these files, but it’s trickier once you start cropping etc And you saw I used the 2x TC a lot to get the birds large in the frame
Definitely helpful here in Maine where the Buffleheads recently all turned up. They are one of the most difficult ducks to capture close, in nice light and properly exposed.. I will be chasing that and using your tips to edit.
Great video about your photo processing. Reinforces the techniques you taught in the Bird Editing video that I havre bought a while ago. May be you can update the video with new LR and PS features. Thanks
Hi Jan, thanks again for showing the huge power of editing!! Over here I'm still culling from my 60k Bali images .. and because she lost her patience, my wife started editing some of my images already. That's actually an interesting experience as well ;-) Sometimes that gives interesting insights in how I take my shots, or alternative ways to edit. Maybe on the Bird Photography Show, you and Glenn could edit an image from each other. But I guess we'll first get to see something from Antarctica, and hopefully soon after a review of the 200-800 ..
@@craigc7708 heheh, I must admit I exaggerated a bit during that trip, but it was over 3 weeks including 2 days in the national park with a birding guide ..
Hi Jan, was trying to open a raw image in photoshop camera raw, but cannot see how to similtaniously open same image ( or how to duplicate image once there) Trying to follow the instance you had with the Bufflehead. Great work by the way.
@@jan_wegener , thanks for the reply. I struggled trying in both lightroom and photoshop before realising I needed to duplicate before taking them into Photoshop. It worked a treat once I got there . May post the result when at my PC. Thanks again.
Great Video Jan! I have a question about your Prosets. When I apply them to a correctly exposed image (Nikon Z6ii profile), the images seem to become slightly overexposed with almost every Proset. Is this normal? Thanks.
They tend to make the images a little bit brighter. Usually not too bright. If that’s the case you could pull the exposure slider back a tad or throttle the prosets a bit with the slider. Adobe treats different cameras differently. It’s possible the z6 Ii is a tad brighter than sone others or you master exposure exceptionally well 😀
I keep finding gems from the past but unfortunately it is not just having the best camera that counts. You still need a sharp image and I was usually using too low a Shutter speed in the early days. No DXO AI Denoise software then ! Set too high a shutter speed meant you got a high ISO unusable in those days ! And of course your technique and stalking skills improve. You still need to get close to your subject . Great work though Jan love Sanderling
Hi! Great video as always, exciting prospects if they turn out true, will see. Nikon coming out with a global shutter sports camera sounds possible and explains a few things: why Sony announced so soon (wanted to be first with global shutter) and the fact that sports photographers actually need less MPs. But it’s funny how everyone, including canon’s customers, trounced the R3 because it had “only” 24 mp and it was 6000$… well, wouldn’t you know… looking at you Sony… And of course Nikon, now, can have a global shutter camera, since they use Sony’s sensors, and Sony already pushed on one of their cameras, so, now, Nikon can also have it… doesn’t sound good to me, but it is possible. Honestly, I think Canon is being the smartest company: they don’t pay attention to internet discussions, they listen to actual photographers about what they actually need! Why the R1 would have a global shutter and then be handicapped in DR and ISO performance? Do photographers actually need a global shutter? Not right now, but when the technology is a little more stable, then they will implement it. But maybe I’m wrong, who knows? Those are my 2 cents! All best!
@@jan_wegener yeah, I get what you mean, especially in terms of lenses, I think they should do better. But with camera bodies I think, now, they are having a good approach, but I could be wrong… for example, I think the canon r5 ii won’t have a stacked sensor and that will shock the internet… but if it has a faster readout speed and 60mps, with fast fps, is it really that bad? The Sony a7r v was released last year and, besides the ai chip and 8k, didn’t bring anything substantially new to the table and it’s a (very) slow camera… sometimes, the internet tends to focus to much on specks and forget about the general usability of the gear.
