The reason the generative fill failed with the wedding photo is because the whole mast wasn’t selected so it just continued the part that was visible behind the veil. It works best if the whole subject is selected
@@photoshopcafe I think this might be the same issue with the group portrait - you did a tight selection around the woman you wanted to remove, there was probably enough details left at the edges to prompt the generator to produce a person there. When utilizing the term "remove" in a generative fill text field, it typically results in the elimination of an object rather than its replacement with another entity.
A wee gotcha with the Remove tool is that it is hidden in the unused tools side of the Edit Toolbar panel if you use a custom toolbar. Fortunately, there has been so much activity around the Remove Tool and Generative Fill, I know to go look for it. I had a problem with Remove tool that you indirectly helped me fix. I was finding that you can force horizontal and vertical brush strokes with the Shift key, but could not do the touch down at one end, and shift click at the other. That was obviously because I'd missed the Remove After Each Stroke in the Options bar, so thank you for that. Colin, I have come up with a procedure to remove the lunch thief with generative fill. The trick is to not let AI know there are heads involved. 1. Select the subject. Then remove the lunch thief from the selection. Then use Cntrl X to cut the four who don't want share lunch from the photo and put them in the clipboard. 2. Now select the thief and delete her. 3. Select the empty space and a little of the remaining wall. Use generative fill with no instructions. (Each time I've done this I got a good wall). 4. Use Cntrl V to bring the remaining four back into the picture. 5. The remove tool does a good job of cleaning up any rough edges from the first selection.
I have used both tools and Remove Tool is very fast for simple removal of small areas. The generative fill creates complex replacements of objects or fixes details in removal far better just like your results. The only issue is the lower resolution of some of the replacements in Generative Fill not matching my original photo. Again, working in smaller areas helps as you shown here. I did have Generative Fill add jewelry necklace to a portrait, however on magnifying the jewelry the new object was a bit pixelated (blocky) and not smooth, but this was not as noticeable when zoomed out. Once they add a higher res version this should improve. Thanks for demo!
This is incredible! Just used generative fill in an image today and the result were amazing! Thanks for the video! Made it a lot easier for me to understand how to use it.
I think the generative fill tool will just become better and better over time, with higher resolution. For now I'll be doing as you do and use both tools depending on the situation
This is a great tutorial and it mirrors our experience. We have been using both tools in our agency work and in our NPPE Field classes and we are getting the same results as you have demonstrated. With Gen Fill we usually have to do follow up work and I have found that it works best for files that are going up on the Internet at moderate size. Due to its 1080P limitation we have not had a lot of success when working on files that will be printed at large scale, although in some cases with additional edit work we have been able to use Gen Fill. I must say the Remove Tool is excellent and has replaced the healing brush and clone stamp in our clean up workflow. Can't wait to see Gen Fill go full res.
Thank you! I tried to remove a lot of powerlines from a busy background and I was kind of terrified when I saw the generative fill giving me bad results. I had already charged the client to do what I thought would be a relatively easy job and I charged according to the time I'd spend. It would have been a nightmare had I not seen your video, as I had never used the remove tool. I didn't remember that existed. That worked very well! Spared me a lot of time. Greetings from Brazil.

Thanks so much for this information and it is a confirmation of my results. I just couldn't find a way to remove some things with generative fill regardless of selections or prompts, it would just replicate something else. In the end this is no different than some of the other tools, spot removal, healing brush, clone stamp etc, some work in some situations but not in others, hence use another tool! :) I also found that in some cases (removing text from a textured weathered paper ) Generative Fill and the Remove Tool gave me unsightly artifacts and/or removed the texture whereas Content Aware Fill gave me the results I wanted. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and skills!!!!
IHMO it depends. I have not been able to figure out how to use remove tool. I think they both have their place. This lesson helped me with using both tools effectively. The comments are helpful as well. I have been using generative fill to expand my photos. I use the crop tool to add some area. Then Rectangular Marquee the blank with a teensy bit of the photo selected. Then GF with no prompt. Since LLMs work with guess the next pixel they do a remarkable job of adding to the picture. It is a good way to make an iPhone photo into a square for Instagram.
I use both, or I should say all three. Sometimes I only need the healing brush and in some cases I feel it is faster. I have been frustrated more by the Generative tool than the Remove Tool. The Generative tool seems to be improving on its own. In May I couldn’t keep the feathers straight while removing sticks in front of a snowy egret. In June I could. One day maybe next year the Generative tool will announce we are all its prisoners, and we will be forced to work in its huge crime organization as scammers.
Generative fill gives 3 versions...dont just only use the first one... (First few pictures) Wedding and friend removal...you have to mark EVERYTHING or it will generate content matching what is left (leftover hair/leftover mast parts)
Great vid. Note as you know Generative fill is greatly influenced by prompt, for me "Remove" prompt works great if it keeps generating stuff I don't want. This also makes generative fill useful when removing, instead of replacing. Ps: despite remove prompt it still generates stuff, only less. Not perfect, but slightly better. Ps2: and as you also did after not perfect results sometimes in complex cases even if one section we are satisfied with its a step toward our goal, select the not that good part and keep generate. (like i like these trees replacing the cabin, but not this ones)
@@photoshopcafe for me it gives completely different results then using empty, i presume it differs on the photos and selections. Believe me for me it was different.
one example: i was trying to repair a clothing on an arm, and falsly all results were flagged as inappropiate. Doing the same selection but entering Remove as prompt gave me the fix i tried to achive. Without prompt the GF thinks about the whole image and decides. with prompt it uses the prompt and the image then decides. And yes many times the result is the same.
My favourite aspect of the Remove tool is how quick it is. A selected area roughly 110 X 400 pixels, in a 1200 X 800 pixel image, Generative Fill took 10 seconds to do an OK job. Swiping the Remove tool with a single stroke down that same selection, not only gave a better result, it did so near as heck instantaneously. I live in rural NZ so my Internet is not the best, but I still have VDSL2 with 72Mbs down and 12Mbs up. I'd love to know how much of the ten seconds was moving pixels to and from the Adobe servers, and how much was the server based Ai doing its thing.

You can change the brush size while painting by clicking on the pressure sensitive icon to the left of Sample All Layers. Of course you need to be using a pen and tablet, not a mouse. Now a light touch will give you a small brush and harder pressure will expand your brush.
These results mirror mine. I've found the remove tool to be overall very good. Generative fill gets easily confused even with text prompts. I typed " trees " to get rid of some houses in a background and it put a white van in it! Very odd lol. ☺️
Simple answer to your question: BOTH. Like every took in photoshop, they have their uses dependent on what you need at any given time, options is always the best way forward. Remove tool and GenAI gives us those choices.
It is great that you are researching what practical use of these tools/technologies is. I'm wondering why you (and many other people) are using brackets for changing the size of the brush. I like more Control+Opt left-right for size and up-down for hardness. In that case, I don't need to take my hand from the mouse/pen. It is faster. I understand that brackets are here for ages and that this is a habit. I change my habits when I find a better or faster way. This is not a criticism, just a discussion. I'd like to understand your way because I can learn something new. 😀
Sometimes I use the other option, but a bracket key is simple and fast, 1 key. The other option requires 2 keys and to physically press and drag your mouse, that's 3 actions compared to one.
Great video mate!....I approach this from a 30 plus year career, as a Photojournalist, and worry about the implications.....Art though, is different, and can see the immense possibilities....
I feel like these videos about these tools would be better served by demonstrating practical use-cases. The repetitive use of examples where the literal subject of a photograph is removed altogether…it’s (a) use case for making a clean plate for videos where one wants to cause the subject to “appear” or to create parallax movement. But most folks want to add padding around a subject, or Re-create a sliver of shoe that didn’t make it into a full body shot
sometimes those two tools give such a time consumption that manually editing is faster. I just realised that with all Ai tools (like Topaz and others), that processing time is huge and often manually is faster.
Yeah, I'm with you. Sometimes it's the remove tool and sometimes AI. (And sometimes neither! 😄) One thing Adobe needs to look at is its AI censorship. I've had it refuse to do a generative fill several times. I have no idea what their server thinks I'm doing, but whatever it is, when I'm trying to repair a rough edge on an old family photo, it's nothing weird!
It may possibly think you’re trying to infringe on someone else’s IP. It absolutely refused to remove one of those weird watermarks that midjourney throws in every so often
I have allready done some amazing jobs with both the remove tool and the generative fill. I am totally in on this, and can't wait until Adobe incooperate it in the the standard version of photoshop. I have experiensed a coupple of break downs with the beta version that I never had on the running standard version. The examples you show here is just as amazing.
Thank you for pointing out the resolution disparity caused by generative fill at this point in time which is understandable, I suppose, since it is consistent with the low resolution of - as far as I am aware - all the AI image engines and which, will naturally cause potentially serious complications when input into a higher resolution original image. This, it seems to me, makes it, for all practical purposes at this point in its development a useless, inherently problematic function. Basically, more trouble than it is worth until it is able - perhaps via a per instance subscription fee - to, once it produces a satisfactory result at low res for us to then opt for a final, complimentary high resolution version of "the real McCoy". Or, until Adobe incorporates it into the on computer program like the remove tool. Would you agree with my assessment?
Its very expensive computational wise to do this in high resolution and requires massive processing and data centers to do this. We will have to wait and see how they address it.
Hi, So if you enter "remove" in the prompt, the object will be removed very well. in your example at 6:00 e.g. "remove high voltage pylon" then the power pole is also perfectly removed.
Well, no winner here, just two useful tools, depending on the situation. If someday the Remove Tool could use the cloud, well, the result would be even better in such complex situations where you tried to get rid of big areas. We are living incredible times BTW. I'm not a photographer, but just an enthusiast, and this sort of AI tricks work like magic!
Colin: wonderful video. I have once more learned a lot from you! I have one question though, resulting from trying things out with my own pictures. Not so rarely, generative fill insists on replace the person I want to remove by another. It not only does this if I leave the prompt empty, but also if I make it explicit in the prompt, that I do not want to see a new person, but just the background of the picture. I have tried out multiple prompts (like "no person", "only background", or longer versions of them), to no avail. Do you have any suggestion how to fix this? I can often use the remove tool instead, but do then need to use the (normally less precise) brush, rather than the lasso tool.
I'd love to use this but the Remove Tool usually only leaves black or black and brown splotches on my images. This issue is known by Adobe in both beta and regular Photoshop versions, but they don't seem to know how to fix it. On occasion, Remove Tool actually works and it's great but most of the time it just leaves those black blotches. Not ready for prime time yet.
I do not have the option I the full version... Checked to see if it is up to date, which it is. I do have it available in the Beta version, however, it only turned the thing I wanted to remove to a black cutout. Not really sure what is going wrong, but following the steps the same way and not getting any results.
The problem of Generative Fill is the resolution. I noticed that I destroy my photos with this tool. The remove tool doesn't work well. It's ok for very small parts of an image. If I want to print my photos I avoid both tools
Do you think that the Generative fill is learning more and more as the bata version is used by so many people? And if so do you think it will be in the full version with in a year? Liked the Video by the way.
From what I've unofficially heard, the beta users aren't training the ai, that would violate the Adobe stock rule. Where its all trained from images Adobe has the rights to.
Hi Chris, slightly off topic but somehow I’ve lose the floating Generative Fill bar and can’t get it back. Going through ‘edit’ is a bit of a pain. Please can you help?

Yeah, I'm with you. Sometimes it's the remove tool and sometimes AI. (And sometimes neither! 😄)
One thing Adobe needs to look at is its AI censorship. I've had it refuse to do a generative fill several times. I have no idea what their server thinks I'm doing, but whatever it is, when I'm trying to repair a rough edge on an old family photo, it's nothing weird!
This is a problem that will be ironed out in time. The other side of censorship, I've had some rather "disturbing" things generated.
It may possibly think you’re trying to infringe on someone else’s IP. It absolutely refused to remove one of those weird watermarks that midjourney throws in every so often
Another superb tutorial. Many thanks!
Thanks
I have allready done some amazing jobs with both the remove tool and the generative fill. I am totally in on this, and can't wait until Adobe incooperate it in the the standard version of photoshop. I have experiensed a coupple of break downs with the beta version that I never had on the running standard version. The examples you show here is just as amazing.
Thanks, it will only get better
Opps, tried the coupon for the course and it didn't work, thoughts?
Hi. The coupon had expired. Since I didn't give an expiration date, I have extended the coupon code, it will work now :)
Wow! you just proved in this video, that Ai generative fill is not that smart as the "remove tool". And with no internet connection. Awesome! 👍
Great tutorial as always and really informative. At 7:23 that's really a nice trick that they used 😄👏
Thank you for pointing out the resolution disparity caused by generative fill at this point in time which is understandable, I suppose, since it is consistent with the low resolution of - as far as I am aware - all the AI image engines and which, will naturally cause potentially serious complications when input into a higher resolution original image.
"remove high voltage pylon"
then the power pole is also perfectly removed.
That's a misconception. Gen fill doesn't respond to prompts like "remove". Check out Adobes help files and you will see that.
imho remove tool works better than generative fill in a lot of ways. thanks for the vid!
You should use same image for both to have afair comparison
Def. both tools
Very helpful video thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
SUBSCRIBED!! THANK YOU!
Thanks
Video very useful.
Another great video. A++++
I'd love to use this but the Remove Tool usually only leaves black or black and brown splotches on my images. This issue is known by Adobe in both beta and regular Photoshop versions, but they don't seem to know how to fix it. On occasion, Remove Tool actually works and it's great but most of the time it just leaves those black blotches. Not ready for prime time yet.
Excellent tutorial!
Cheers
OOPS , trying to follow long too soon, I didn't see your tip to turn on Sample All Layers - Thanks!
Do you have any idea of when Generative Fill will come out of beta and ready for general release?
I do not have the option I the full version... Checked to see if it is up to date, which it is. I do have it available in the Beta version, however, it only turned the thing I wanted to remove to a black cutout. Not really sure what is going wrong, but following the steps the same way and not getting any results.
I think generative fill has a long way to go yet . The removal tool is good and like you at the moment using both makes the most sense to me
Right you are
Thanks!
Thanks! Really appreciated:)
with generative fill you must specify what you need it to do for the image (type it in the command box). If you do not, this tool will malfunction
The problem of Generative Fill is the resolution. I noticed that I destroy my photos with this tool. The remove tool doesn't work well. It's ok for very small parts of an image. If I want to print my photos I avoid both tools
Both
What about using delete and fill for removing objects?
Sure, there are many other ways to do it. Use whatever gives you the result you want
Hi! is it possible to blur a face out, but let the hands passing through it, show? Is it possible?
Thank you. Have you compared the background given by "Generative Fill" with the same area on Google "Street view"?
It won't match,
Do you think that the Generative fill is learning more and more as the bata version is used by so many people? And if so do you think it will be in the full version with in a year? Liked the Video by the way.
From what I've unofficially heard, the beta users aren't training the ai, that would violate the Adobe stock rule. Where its all trained from images Adobe has the rights to.
Thank you Colin. What parameters do I need to make my pc handle the generative fill/denoise faster? One image takes about 7 mins to denoise!
A faster internet for Gen Fill. Faster GPU for nr off the top of my head. Nr will get faster though, it's a very early beta
I think using both is the better plan.
Hi Chris, slightly off topic but somehow I’ve lose the floating Generative Fill bar and can’t get it back. Going through ‘edit’ is a bit of a pain. Please can you help?
use "remove" as the prompt in generative fill. YOU ALSO HAVE TO UNLOCK ALL LAYERS
