The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Ed Sullivan was what we should all want to be when we're old--open to what younger people are doing and thinking, and not wedded to everything we grew up with. He hated racism, and while he wasn't against the war, he understood that many people were and that they had the right to be that way.

@@joelglanton6531 I'm convinced it's live. Fogerty is making sure he's on top of the mic, everything's plugged in, and - what I think is usually the clincher - Doug Clifford is hitting every beat, every fill perfectly, and this is not the studio version. So there's no way this is just live vocal on top of playback. I know bands sometimes pre-recorded non-studio versions for TV shows and then mimed those versions (most obvious one is The Who's "My Generation" on Smothers Brothers) but this is live. Fogerty's fretwork is spot-on, and so is Stu's bass playing. Tom, well... you barely even see him anyways :)

@@roseblake5803 he wrote this song about a certain Senator's son from Tennessee and everyone knows who that Senator's son is. Too bad Fogarty does not have the integrity to acknowledge it, since that person is now a leftist icon. i actually read or heard that Fogarty said the person was David Eisenhower, Ike's grandson and Nixon's son in law, which makes no sense since he was not a Senator's son. as for Trump, he did more to keep us out of needless conflicts than any recent president so it was weird if Fogerty took that cheap shot. if Trump had led us into war, then the comment would at least have reason to be considered, Trump did exactly the opposite. the fact that Fogerty will not even acknowledge who it is about means he can write a great song but not gonna look to him for lessons on integrity and honor.

That was nicely shot. You never think of Ed Sullivan
(show) doing anything that creative. CCR always great.

    • @craigluhr7243

Why would you think that? Ed Sullivan was way ahead of his time. He caught a lot of flack for bringing controversial talent to his show. Especially giving black performers so much exposure. He was the first to put the Supremes and Ray Charles on TV. He was the first to put Elvis and the Beatles. The Doors, the Mama's and the Pappas, Tina Turner, Jefferson Airplane, and tons of others. Ed Sullivan is an icon and doesn't get enough credit for what he did to change the country.

My dad passed away 3 weeks ago. He served 2 years in VN in 68 and 69. He came home with half his jaw and left thumb gone. He was snuck into the Oklahoma City airport at 4;00 am to avoid the protestors. I remember being scared to death when I was a boy hearing my dad scream out in his sleep with nightmares. If this song came on he would get really angry. Didn’t realize why until now. You can ohh and awe over this draft dodger but I say for my father who sacrificed so you could stay home and be a rockstar. Screw you John.

Amazing that the Fogarty brothers, Cook and Clifford struggled through the 60s to find their sound, caught fire in a four-year span, then couldn't get along when they finally achieved success under John Fogarty's leadership, flaming out in '72.
