Best Ambient Synth Shootout #18: Bastl Instruments Kastle - Song 1

- Today I finally got my Bastl Kastle :-) This is the outcome of my first patching exercise. Not sure if it really could do some good ambient, but I quickly discovered the great potential of this little beast to make awesome dark ambient drone stuff.
I used it for the recording in the following FX pedal chain:
Kastle - TC Electronic Mimiq - Alesis Ampliton - Alesis Philtre - DigiTech Obscura - TC Electronic T2
The signal went then via a small Behringer mixer straight into the pc.
To create the complete song I recorded three stereo audio tracks (low pitch sound, high pitch sound, and fx sound) each played live. For the fx sound I simply switched on and off the Kastle synth in lack of keyboard control. There was no recognizable latency to misuse the power switch for that ;-) The final song was then mastered with just a bit EQ and compression.
Well, I decided to go back to the basics with my songs. But at the same time make something useful for the synth community and do a kind of competition (I like competitions;-). What's my best synth for ambient music. But this one is again a bit out of competition ;-)

Just got one ! Love the sound. As you say awesome for dark ambient sounds but you're never going to make a euphoric trance track where it fits ! It does what it does brilliantly and is such good fun. I travel a lot on business and have a neat little setup for whiling away lonely nights in hotel rooms with Reason as my DAW, a CME keyboard, headphones and a decent interface. This will be joining the team.
i recommend some of teenage engineerings pocket operators to add to that setup! very small and portable and they sound quite good!
Hi Christian, very intresting atmosphere with little modular synth kastle. It'a a very beautiful with connect at effects pedals and other device synths. :)
Many thanks for your nice comment :-)
Nice one Christian, been listening to a few of your soundscapes. Really enjoyed them.
Many thanks for your comment :-)
The effects chain enhances that little gadget beautifully.
Thank you :-) Yes, it does ;-)
This little box looks like a lot of fun. Inspiring jam!
Many thanks :-)
I love all your sonic creations, but this one...Whoa, intense. Would make the perfect soundtrack for a horror/scifi flick......LOVE IT !!!!!
Many thanks for your very nice comment :-D
I have the Kastle on order. and I'm looking forward to creating such pacthes as you have done here....
Definitely great for dark ambient. Well done!
Many thanks :-)
You did with this thing greater stuff than others do with expensive modular systems.
Many thanks for your nice comment :-)
Sounds so dope! 💯💯💯🦇🦇🦇
Thank's for posting 🎼

Many thanks :-)
Beautiful sounds !
Many thanks :-)
that was badass. thanks
Thank you :-)
nice atmosphere :)
Thank you :-)
this might be a confusing question but if I wanted to replicate this type of sound should I worry more about the synth I have or the effects I use with it? I am obsessed with this
Well, at least for that what I am doing you need care about both. The synth sounds lay the foundation (important to multi-tracking them separately in the bass, mid and high frequency areas) and the effects just add the little extra then. The Mimiq converts the sound into something stereo, followed by eventual panning and filtering (just because the Kastle has no filter) and then add default delay and reverb. Nothing fancy here just using some guitar pedals.
nice n spooky.
Thank you :-)
Awesome track! How can somebody dislike it? :)
Many thanks :-)
that's the stuff
Thank you :-)
dig it
Awesome Sounds! Just ordered this little beast, looking forward to jam around with it. Is there a possibility to sync it with Korg Volca?
Thank you :-) There's a video on YT that shows different syncing possibilities. From that video I would think that it's possible to sync with a Volca.
Yes you can sync with a volca, beatstep, or SQ-1. From personal experience I feel like it syncs and plays best with the SQ-1.
Those Alesis pedals sound pretty awesome when used as filters. I have been finding mixed reviews. Any words of advice?
I like the Alesis ModFX series. They are all stereo. In my opinion the Philtre is doing a great job especially playing with the LFO knobs while doing live recordings. I haven't compared it with real analog filter, but to my ears it does the job well. Also the concepts of Ampliton and Bitrman are pretty cool and unique. The only downside is that they are just a little bit noisy. Not much but audible
Stranger Things? Is it you?
Hehehe ;-)
It's only a true ambient shootout sans reverb imo
okay now lets listen
