  • Well, this time it's again a bit outside the competition;-) Because I used the second time a Bastl Instruments MicroGranny 2 (a 8-bit, mono sampler with some of my own sampled sounds) and a massive assistance of some FX pedals to generate a low-fi, outer-space, dark ambient song.
I used it in the following FX chain:
MicroGranny 2 - EHX Superego with a Zoom MS-70CDR in the fx loop - Alesis Philtre - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - DigiTech Polara.
The signal goes via a small Behringer mixer straight into the pc.
To create the complete song I recorded several stereo audio tracks, each mainly played live as it can be seen in the video. The final song was then mastered with just a bit EQ and compression.
    ---
Well, I decided to go back to the basics, but at the same time make something useful for the synth community and do a kind of competition (I like competitions;-). What's my best synth for ambient music, but this one is out of competition :-)
If you're interested in my MicroGranny sample set, let me know and I can send it :-)

Very cool song :) I’m a little confused what exactly the microgranny is being used for though, are you just recording other synths into it and then playing it back through the pedals? Or is there more you’re doing with it?

Thank you for your comment :-) Well, in general it is a monophonic 8-bit sampler which can play samples directly from a microSD card. The cool feature to make it useful for me for drony, glichy soundscapes is, that you can loop the samples (even small fractions) in a latch mode (works then like a looper) and are able to change in realtime the loop start point , the loop end point, how fast the sample is played (pitching it down is cool) and how strong the loop start vary for every cycle (amount of glichiness). Tweaking the knobs makes really fun and can give quite unexpected results. In this mode it is more like a tweakable lo-fi tape loop machine. So, yes, I would say it's more than just play recoded synths through the Microgranny.

I'd love to download your MG sample pack!!

Does the MG do ‘one shot’ sample playback? For example, I notice that you have to hold the button for the duration of the sample. Can you set it where you simply tap a button and it plays that whole sample file?

Ok, so I watched every video in the shootout. Which synth is the winner? I'm dying to know your opinion!

Hmm, it's still a very difficult decision, because each of the synth has it's own unique character. From my shootout videos so far I would give the win to the Ensoniq Fizmo with the Technics SX-WSA1 in second place. Main reasons are the uniqueness of the sounds, expressiveness of the sounds, usability of the sounds and easy programming/tweaking of patches.

Thanks for the reply. Yes those are definitely some unique synths. I don't see them talked about very much.
