    You can turn right at a red light so long as there aren't signs prohibiting such action. Do NOT turn contrary to a sign that prohibits right hand turns on a red light.
    When turning right at a red light, you must stop at the correct stopping position. For most intersections that are equipped with traffic lights, there will be both a STOP line and a crosswalk. Stop your vehicle just before the STOP line. When you approach the intersection, allow the STOP line to just roll under the front of the vehicle. At that point come to a complete stop. You know the vehicle is completely stopped because the body will settle back and come to a rest over the frame of the vehicle - see this video for compete stops: • How to Stop Completely...
    If you just arrived at the red light, and the traffic on the other side of the intersection is turning left, that usually means that that traffic has an advanced green turning arrow. If so, the left turning traffic has the right-of-way, and you must wait for the left-turning traffic before you can proceed and turn right on the red light.
    Before turn right on a red light, give the right-of-way to all other road users - pedestrians, cyclists, scooters and whatnot.
    After coming to a complete stop, you will most likely have to creep forward to be able to see the cross traffic. Continue to scan, and immediately before turning, do a shoulder (head) check to ensure that there aren't any pedestrians or cyclists in your blind spot on the right side of the vehicle.
    Also be sure to scan thoroughly for cyclist and riders on motorcycles.
    When the way is clear and you have given the right-of-way to all other road users, you can proceed. Turn the corner and look into your intended path of travel. And accelerate the vehicle to the posted speed limit or the flow of traffic; whichever is less as quickly as possible.
    If there is a bicycle lane on the right that has a solid white line--and there isn't a right-hand turning lane, do not squeeze over there to turn right. On a road test, that will incur major demerits and could potentially cause you to fail.
    Good luck on your road test!

    It should be illegal to honk at someone in front of you because you’re not turning on a red. I turned on a red just like twenty minutes ago because I felt the pressure behind me (usually almost always it’s only a matter of time before I get honked at) and I turned and the car that was coming though not in the lane I was turning into honked at me and I instantly regretted giving in to the pressure.
    What we need to remind yourselves is that the person behind you who honks at you is NOT going to take responsibility if you did get in to an accident . All they will say is “why did you turn just because I honked ?”
    I would love to see NO TURN ON RED on all signals eventually.

      Hi SleeplessinOC - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment. And I agree my friend; ultimately, it is your responsibility to drive safely, but there is a lot of pressure from other drivers to "hurry up" and not impede traffic. This video too will give you more information about social driving pressure: ruclips.net/video/Qf9b63bJ-oY/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. Smart Drive Test thanks Rick. I get so tired of getting honked at when I’m at a red and one day I feel like I’m going to lose it and get out of my car to go yell in their face. I’m shocked to no end that it happens as often as it does that I am convinced the majority of people are just assholes. I love it when I see the “ no turn on red” sign because I can then just relax without feeling the pressure . They want you to take the risk but I’m 1000% certain that they would never step forward and take the blame if an accident did happen.

      Smart Drive Test Rick, can you help me out here? I’m trying to figure out if I have a traffic ticket on the way. I stupidly caved into the pressure to make a right turn on a red this evening even though no one was honking at me (at least not yet) only to notice as I was turning that there was a sign that indicated no turn on red. It was past 9 PM and no cars so I turned even though I would have preferred to wait. I’m so furious with myself and because the city it was located at is quite a distance away, I didn’t feel like turning back to take another look although if I had turned back right away , it wouldn’t have been that much of a detour. Sigh....I know I will know for certain with time if a ticket comes in the mail but is there another faster way for me to find out? I tried google earth but I’m not getting anything useful .

      SleeplessinOC if you don’t plan on turning right at all, then move to the left lane ahead of time. Otherwise turn right when its safe to do so. Let’s get traffic moving.

    I’m 47, a beginner driver and about to finish my 14-hour practical driving course (8 hours for basic and 6 hours for advanced). Since it’s very expensive to take additional courses, I’m just relying on YT videos to acquire additional knowledge. Good thing that I came across your channel and your videos are helping me a lot! Here in the Philippines, most roads are narrow with a lot of obstacles, poor road conditions and uneducated drivers. So put them all together, a very challenging situation especially for someone like me. What you impart in your tutorials adds more confidence and better understanding to what I’ve learned in driving school. Learning is a continuous process so I’m gonna stay tuned to your channel from now on and for as long as I can drive. Stay safe, Rick, and warm hugs from the 🇵🇭!

    Very good instructional video. I am a driving instructor and it's amazing at how many people don't stop, don't use their turn signal, try to squeeze into the bike lane, turn into the incorrect lane, etc. And for the impatient driver behind that will honk if you don't make the turn. Thanks for the video.

    In Ontario, you’re not required by law to turn right on a red light. Some may say by not turning on a red light you are impeding with the regular flow of traffic. My advice to them is I rather be safe than sorry and they can honk all they want.

      Hi Wloogal - Thank you for your comment. Actually, you're NOT required to turn on a red in any place in the world. You can always wait for the green, as you said. But it is a courtesy to go if you can. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Wow, thank you so much for making these videos! They've helped me a ton, and no doubt have helped many thousands of other people as well. If you have a sec, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts about making a left turn from a side road onto a main road (and across multiple lanes of traffic) vs. making a right turn followed by a subsequent U-turn. Given the often unpredictable and sometimes unsafe/illegal driving on the road from other drivers, coupled with busy traffic times -- do you think a right turn followed by a subsequent U-turn might be a safer/better option in some scenarios? Thanks! :)

    I really love watching your driving tips videos. They are very helpful. My road test is in two weeks, so I'm in the extreme practice mode right now, haha. I always dread right turns on red lights. Even though I'm a pretty good driver already, sometimes I fail with my timing on red light right turns. I see no cross traffic and think that no one comes from up front, but then as soon as I move into the intersection, the cars from the opposite side start turning left. I think my reaction time is still just quite slow, so I'm making sure I get lots of practice on these specifically. I'm in California, so I really don't know what it's like in Canada, but can you still choose not to make a right turn on red if you don't feel confident? Some RUclips instructors say that it's completely okay to not turn if you don't feel you want to do it.

    Great video. Rick, when turning right on a red light, is it necessary to wait until both lanes of the oncoming traffic (from the left) have cleared before making the turn? I ask because drivers are not supposed to change lanes at an intersection.

      Hi Sean - thanks for your comment and great question. No, you don't have to wait for the traffic to clear in the far lane; however, do pull into the space between the vehicles in that lane. Thank you for this video! Do you have any tips on how to tell for sure who has a green light or how long to wait? Or do you suggest that if there are any cars in the lanes going forward from the left or the left turners from the front that I should just wait even if one of them might also be on red? Because sometimes when I'm checking for oncoming traffic, the cars to my left are stopped and haven't moved for a couple seconds, but then when I try to turn, they suddenly start moving because I waited too long. I can't tell if it's because the left turners had a green because by the time I get there, they have all turned I'm assuming

    Hey there Rick! VERY important video for new drivers. I certainly had a big challenge when turning right on red when I was a new driver. I think that this is probably one of the top challenging things for new drivers since firstly, it is dangerous if not done properly, and secondly, it is sometimes difficult to know what all is going on in the intersection. What I mean is that the driver needs to know for sure who has the green light before they turn. Usually, cross traffic has the green, however, when they get amber, the new driver might still be looking for traffic from there, and possibly not noticed the amber, and wonder why traffic is stopping, and just be super confused as to what is happening. I know this because it happened to me when I was first learning to drive. I actually made a HUGE blunder, almost causing an accident because of this. Also, often, just like in the video, the oncoming traffic gets advanced green, and since one turning on the red cannot see this, it may be confusing, and for a new driver even more so. After that incident, I am super cautious when turning right on red. My best tip for new drivers would be to KNOW FOR SURE who has the green light, and that way you know who you have to yield to. Overall, be extra cautious when performing this manoeuvre because it certainly isn't the safest one out there.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 лет назад

      Hi Kyle Crasto - thank you for that awesome comment with the great information. That will be really helpful for new drivers learning how to drive. It really augments the information presented in the video. How's the driving around solo going? Stay well, all the best, Cheers Rick

    • @coolkyle812
      @coolkyle812 7 лет назад +1

      No worries! The driving solo is going pretty well. A good feeling of independence. In fact, I was at the bus stop at the corner of an intersection yesterday, there was nothing to do so I decided I might as well watch how drivers turning at the red light haha. At one point, the light was red and oncoming traffic had the advanced green, however a guy was deciding whether to turn right on the red. He was looking to the left thinking cross traffic had green. However, of course cross traffic has stopped since it it advanced green for oncoming. So, he decided "Well, screw it I'm gonna turn" without realizing oncoming traffic had advanced green. He realized a little too late, when he had completed the turn. Even though there were a couple lanes on the new road, the left turning vehicle came very close to this guy. That's why I just wanted to point out it's super important to know who has the green light, and if you don't know, just don't turn.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 лет назад

      Hey Kyle - thanks for the comment. That's a good point that you raised. If a vehicle is turning right on the red, and the opposing traffic has the advanced green onto multi-lanes, it is important for the right turning traffic to turn in beside the spaces of the left turning vehicles - not in beside the vehicles. It's a defensive move. You can see that in this video: ruclips.net/video/aLfiLdPEC6U/видео.html Thanks for all your great comments. All the best, Cheers Rick

    And while we are talking about turning right on red, just a cautionary tip on the regulatory sign which says "No Turn on Red". Often times, as a beginner, I used to end up completely ignoring this sign (of course inadvertently) while turning right on red, and I believe it happens majorly because of our prime attention focused on watching the traffic and pedestrians/bikes/etc. As a matter of fact, this was the very main reason I flunked my driving test in my first attempt!
    Long story short, just making sure we pay attention to the regulatory signs, if any, that restrict turning on red, is very very important to avoid possible mishap (and of course, a red light violation ticket ;))... All the best!!
    Note: The above at least applies here in California. Not sure if there's any similar rule in other regions.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Milton Raj - thank you for your poignant comment. And you are absolutely correct - there is so much going on for new drivers at intersections that they often miss the sign that prohibits a right turn on a red light. And the signs are often small and not well located, thus making them easy to miss if you're not specifically looking for it. Thanks for the great advice and experience. If there's anything further we can do, drop us a note. All the best, Cheers Rick

      Hi Shallδ - Thank you for your question. If the other side of the intersection has an advanced green, your light will be red. Therefore, you'll be sitting at a red light and the other traffic will be moving through the intersection completing a left-hand turn. I'm here for a knowledge refresh. I failed my first attempt for class 2 because I had some bad habits from driving for 30+ years. One being taking both hands of the wheel to adjust my head band at a stop sign ( 🤯 woops ) and I had another when I stopped at a stop light to turn right, a cube van was beside me, I pulled ahead looking around the van and then went. The examiner called it 'turn right on road without stopping.' 🤷‍♀ He said I should have stopped in front of the van and check every thing as well as shoulder checks. So treating that situation as a yield after the stop was wrong, and be more obvious with the shoulder checks, even though I've seen city busses do it all the time :P I did stop before I snuck ahead to see around the van, The van was over the stop line but the stop line wasn't very visible. I'm in Prince George BC, the snow and slush makes the lines hard to see. I have another test coming next Monday. The head band is coming off and I may get whiplash from the shoulder checks lol ( Granny school bus driver is the plan lol )

      Hi Michael Mains - Thank you for your comment and query. You will be facing a red light and the traffic on the other side of the intersection will be turning left. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    My instructor asked me to move into bicycle lane and as right as I can (2 ft within curb) and block it before turning right? Is that correct? I'm in Wisconsin.

    Hi! You mentioned that if your left view is impaired due to blockage, it is advised to move a bit forward to watch out for upcoming traffic before making the turn. Does this mean that it is acceptable to block the crosswalk while waiting for the road to clear up? (because you’re basically passing across the white line to get a better view)
    Taking my test tomorrow, I couldn’t find any answers for this 🙏🏼

      Good luck on your driver's test. Yes, if you've stopped at the correct stopping position and the road is clear of pedestrians, you can move forward to see. If the traffic is busy, you can wait for the green light. If it's not busy, then you will have to turn. Drop back and let us know how it goes on your test. Cheers Rick

    Hi again Rick. :) In the case of a road test, the intersection I'm wondering about involves the east/west traffic(i'll be faced north at south end of intersection) having advance green left turns. On a road test, am I able to turn right(i'm heading north, turning east) as the east/west traffic turns on their advance green? I hope you can visualize this....again, thank you!!

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад +1

      I can visualize - as I stated, you only have to come to a complete stop once, and if the way is clear after you creep forward, you can proceed. All the best, Cheers Rick

    at 3:47, do you see that stop light (that turned green) thats on the pole but a bit lower, if it was a red light would I stop and wait for it to turn green or do i go during the red light, like am i allowed to cross a red light in that situation

    When turning right on a red light or even if the light turns green after turning can I drive directly to the left lane instead of staying on the right lane? I ask because when I leave my daughter at school I turn right and immediately I drive to the left lane because I need to turn left at the next traffic light.

    I am curious about the expression you use at the end of your videos: "Pick the best answer, not necessarily the right answer". Is it applicable to driving only or do you tend to apply it in your daily life as well?

    Great video :D I got my driving license in January this year (in Sweden), and two weeks ago went to US (Florida) for first time and had the chance to drive. Never knew this about turning right on red light until right before I was gonna take over the wheels and drive. I see it's actually not passing the red light itself as the red lights as they're on other side of intersection, meanwhile in Sweden we have it right before we drive out which kind of make sense. Ofc still not possible to do left turns on red light ahead in US, which kind of anyway makes sense.
    So by my understanding, I can always turn right on an intersection (in Florida/US) unless there's sign telling me not to or if there's a red right arrow (and the sense to give way to the cars on the green light ofc)?

      Hi Emil N - Thank you for your comment. And congratulations on passing your road test in Swedent. And yes, you can turn right on a red light after a complete stop, giving the right-of-way to all other road users. And as you stated, there aren't any signs prohibiting the turn. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. Enjoy driving in the United States. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Hey rick, question about your comment on using the bike lane. The California hand book says I am allowed to drive in a bike lane for 200 feet in certain cases one of which is turning right. Now the broken white lines usually are only for 50 feet before the light, and watching a certain driving test on RUclips , the person got negative marking because they didn't occupy the bike lane well before. Does your comment on the bike lane occupying apply to where you are from and can you have a look at the California hand book to make sure what I say is true please!! Amazing work btw.

    Hi Rick . This is extremely helpful. I have a question. Is it necessary to turn right at the red light ? at the driving test can I stay till it turn Green ? as my understanding it's an option , not an obligation , right ? Thank you

    While right turning , there were no cars in the intersection and as soon as I turned , the left turning traffic started too . So should I stop again or keep moving .

    watched this couple days ago, and take the test today. And I failed, instead of doing a full stop, I did a rolling stop on the red light. I thought it would be OK to do it since I'm turning right. I guess I'm wrong because that's what the examiner comment about me. Hopefully next time I'll got it right, and make sure not to forget it.

    Hey Rick! I noticed every time you turned right you turned straight onto the lane closest to the curb, is this mandatory? Or can I turn onto any lane when turning right? Drivers test tomorrow and this is the only thing I'm doubting.

      Hi Airborn Master - Thank you for your comment and query. When turning, it's right lane to right lane, and left lane to left lane. If the lane is blocked by parked cars on a right move over after you make the turn. And for a left, move over to the right lane after turning left. You're going to do awesome on your test. Remember to breath; that will cause your body to relax. Good luck on your road test! Be sure to let us know how it goes. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Question Rick. While positioning to make a right hand turn into a 3 to 4 lane road is it recommended to allow yourself at least two lanes (clear) before making the turn to minimize the chances of cars who are riding in the outermost lane from suddenly moving into the lane you are turning into? Thank you in advance.

    • @carultch
      @carultch 7 месяцев назад

      Vehicles are not legally allowed to change lanes in an intersection, so you do have a right-of-way to turn right on red as long as all incumbent traffic is in any lane other than your destination lane, and there are no pedestrians who have a right-of-way that takes priority over your right-of-way.
      That said, it's better to remain stopped for a right-on-red, if you ever have any doubts that it is safe to make the turn. Treat it like you would any other stop sign. In most states, right-on-red is optional, and you are legally allowed to stay stopped and wait for green. But a testing agent might judge you with their own bias.

    hey rick i have a question?so for example your coming to a stop at a red light camera.there is no camera behind me.it’s on the other side of the street on the far left side.i was at a stop and accidentally went threw the light thinking it was green.the camera was very far so i didn’t see any flash.maybe you have better knowledge on this.
