I take my test Monday and I can honestly cry right now, this video has helped me so much. I feel like unprotected and protected left turns was something that wasn’t looked over as much as other things. So thank you so much!!!
Thank you for telling us and good luck on your test! We have a few other videos that could be helpful before your test, check them out by going to our playlist "Driver guides". And also, please let us know when you passed🙏
This demonstration gives the details needed to make protected and unprotected left turns and choosing the correct lane after turning( left lane on left turn, right lane on right turn). A good way is also shown on how to wait on an intersection by placing the side view mirror aligned with the second stop line. That was really important as a learner. Thanks a lot.
Im confused you had said that if you are turning you have to turn into the lane that is the same side as where you came from but on 11:08 you turned from a left lane into a right lane
@@alysonortiz9558 The road she drove down was a two lane road. There is no "right lane" to turn in to at 11:08. That's the "shoulder" used for parking. It's just not correctly marked. In many cities there will be white outlines or boxes that indicate parking slots. The white biking marker with the chevrons on the road's surface gives away the technical boundary of the lane she's traveling down (It's supposed to be marked with white lines. Someone should probably point that out to the city.) The bike lane is suggested to be between the single driving lane, and the parked cars so you'd want to use the bike lane as a visual guide for how close you want to be to the yellow lines. She says "Doing a lane change" because as far as road law is concerned, the space that you use on a curb to park counts as a "lane", despite you not being able to travel on it.

Why couldn’t you be my driving instructor 😢 You have such a calm voice and demeanor. My instructor makes me nervous sometimes,as if she is my principal giving me instructions 😂
My instructors were the same. Terribly they can't understand a new driving learner, an alien in English comprehension as well. The instructor here uses simpler English and mature attitude make me very comfortable. I just have one question, how many degrees I need to turn left, cuz I always was controlled by my instructors, they interrupted me when I did turns, I was so anxious I didn't even know how can I turn left/right, it's been eight classes. I don't have any skills. it's so overwhelming and frustrating to me. They said I need more classes. But I don't believe them at all.😢
This was the number 1 instruction video that helped remove all the fear I had of protected left turns. I watched this video many times as I practiced these turns. Thanks Jacqueline ... you are truly amazing in your teaching 🙏
The way you repeat the lesson multiple times in one video makes a huge difference. Every other driving lesson video I've watched they show how to do it once and the video ends. I'd have to rewatch the video multiple times to really get it and the problem with that is I'm having to watch or skip through the video intro just to get to the actual lesson.
just failed my test today cause of an error at an unprotected left turn, was my only error on the test and it was a critical at that as my instructor intervened, thanks for this video I retake it next month and it should go all well.
We are sorry to hear about your recent test result, but it's great that you're determined to try again! Mistakes happen, even to experienced drivers. Use this time to practice and work on perfecting those unprotected left turns. You've got this! Stay confident, stay focused, and I'm sure your next test will go much smoother. Best of luck for a successful retake next month! 🚗📝🍀
I had a big panic while turning left, but today after watching your video I've practiced, because I've learnt how to make it safely. Thank you for your great help.🥰
1:50 you wouldn't believe the amount of people who DON'T pull into the intersection to make a left turn, they just idly sit there behind the line and lose their chance to make a left. I think they feel like they will be stuck in the middle of the intersection when the light turns red for oncoming traffic BUT as you can see in this video, when the light does turn red it allows the person in the middle of the intersection the ability to get out of the way of left/right traffic by making that left turn.
I just moved to Canada and even though I have some driving experience from my home country, I was still a bit stressed about the unprotected left turns, but you cleared all my confusion, thanks a ton for the help and great instructions.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this. The first time I drove a car in the US was out of Boston, Logan airport and in rush hour traffic. I was worried about the uncontrolled left turns but this explained it perfectly.

you are so good at explaining things calming and thoroughly, all my dad did was yell at me for not knowing i am supposed to go into the intersection a bit
Yes. The car turning left entered the intersection legally (in California). During a grren light they passed both lines with the front tires and now has the right of way to clear the intersection even on a red light. Otherwise traffic would be horrendous attempting to turn left. People in other cities have no idea how congested the streets are in California.
For a bigger intersection (especially if there isn’t a turn lane), you can proceed half way into the intersection and wait (left turn signal flashing). A 2nd car can enter and wait to also make a left turn. Or traffic behind you can go around you (otherwise, you could be blocking traffic wanting to go straight). For a protected left turn, wait BEHIND the stop line.
This video has helped me a lot to be confident in making left turns. Thank you Jacqueline for this great lesson. You are the best. I passed my test today!
Thank you so much for this resource! Some of my driving lesson instructors couldn't articulate exactly what you need to do when making an unprotected left turn (e.g. roll up to the second limit line and wait, with wheels straight).

I'm on day 4 of learning now and this is my 2nd day on the actual road (first 2 were parking lot days) :')
@kris_n17 they v were probably not in the intersection but waiting behind both crossing lines. When I moved to Albuquerque from L.A. I noticed drivers didn't pull up into the intersection. They stayed behind. Then punch it on the yellow to try and make it across only to get hot by someone running the yellow. Crazy part is in New Mexico they are supposed to pull up. But so many people here don't know that and think it's against the law to enter the intersection to make a left unless you can clear it immediately (as many state laws require).
@@laartwork make sense. Now when I think of it and after driving in Cincinnati for a while, it's easier to be at the intersection and smoothly take a left than rushing at the end AND that's one car less at the next green. thanks a lot for the informative videos, got my G2 on the 12 od December 2023 . My instructor was great but your movies were very educational and informative.
Thanks for the wonderful video about unprotected left turns, this cleared my many doubt about unprotected left turns which I was struggling to understand. I have two doubt more doubt if you could help on this 1) I noticed that in the video at 8.21 when the white car ahead of us took the right lane which is considered a fail for the driving test however, I noticed that the car wanted to make a right-side park immediately after turning left. How should we handle this situation? 2) For the unprotected left turn when the light is green, let's say we moved ahead till the second limit line align with our mirror and waited there until oncoming traffic clears, meanwhile, the light turned yellow, and noticed the pedestrian on the left crossed mark eventually light became red. How should we handle this situation, should I make a left turn when the road is clear even if it has red light or I should wait there until it becomes green again? My car will be in the intersection.
Wow I wish you could be my instructor 😢❤ you explain very clear and make it easy. Thank you for helping us I’m gonna remember you when I am in my driving classes. My English is no good and is not easy to get everything while driving 🥺🥺
I really like that you have a side-screen video of the steering on the video. it will also be helpful to add a side-screen video of how you utilize the brake and accelerator to gain a full picture.
there's a 3rd thing after oncoming traffic and sidewalk pedestrians. it's whether there's congestion on the road ur going to. u must not be stuck in the middle of the intersection. this happened to me yesterday and i'm glad i was paying attention to the traffic ahead even though the light is green i paused
I made the little mistake that I didn’t go when I had the unprotected left turn at a big intersection and their was no oncoming traffic at all there was a really big gab to go but I got nervous and didn’t go. But now I know for next time I will go when it is safe on a blinking yellow arrow. Blinking yellow arrow means to yield to oncoming traffic to the left.
Very clear and articulate, very informative on reference line. Thank you very much! You are really methodical and logical in the steps, it was very easy to understand. I only learn for 4 lessons of my driving, I am a newcomer in Vancouver,BC only until now I know what is protected left turn and unprotected left turn, thank you. For me at the moment, even left to the left in the side street is still hard for me, I unconsciously turn onto the right lane maybe I still don’t fully understand about the technique on how much should I turn on the steering wheel. I guess driving test is still a long way to go for me
At 6:16 you turned when the light just turned red. Is it ok to turn on red when there is a second line available because if you’re just waiting and the light turns red just after the car ahead of you turns left don’t we have to wait again until the light turns green agss again on unprotected? Thank you.
i glad someone brought this up cause the light was only yellow for 1 sec after she already started to turn then she fully made the turn on red. I dont get that
I love watching Zutobi videos, they are very informative. I even subscribed to their app. I noticed the two stickers in the dashboard and I think it helps a lot as a learner to gauge the width of the road while driving. Thank you Zutobi!
Superb videos and great tips! Would love to see a video about making left turns followed by an immediate right, cutting across lanes, which I find incredibly confusing, since turning from extreme left lane into the corresponding left lane and then trying to cut across lanes for an immediate right. Depending on the situation, might seem easier to turn into the middle or right lane.

1) I noticed that in the video at 8.21 when the white car ahead of us took the right lane which is considered a fail for the driving test however, I noticed that the car wanted to make a right-side park immediately after turning left.

I won't even be surprised if 5 years old become qualified through your lessons, you really understood the topic discussion and iterated in repetition. I hope more people will learn from you.

Very clear and concise instructions...thanks for the video
I dont get that
Thank you very much for explaining very clearly with excellent demonstration.

Very helpful and informative. Thank you so much.
I love watching Zutobi videos, they are very informative. I even subscribed to their app. I noticed the two stickers in the dashboard and I think it helps a lot as a learner to gauge the width of the road while driving. Thank you Zutobi!
so you cleared up some things for me. My family had me so confused. I am back in driver classes again.
Thank you alot Jacqueline, Your video is excellent, clear explanation.
