SELECT DRIVER'S LICENSE CHECKLIST
For the purposes of a road test, you want to ensure that the vehicle is roadworthy.
If a minor defect is detected prior to the road test, it can be easily corrected.
When you arrive for your road test, there is going to be a pre-trip inspection by the examiner to ensure that all the lights are working, the horn, and that there aren't any apparent defects.
If a minor defect--a light out for example, you will be denied going out on your road test.
Check all the fluid levels under the hood. As well, ensure that all the lights are working and that there isn't any body damage.
Check that all the glass is in good condition.
Ensure that the licence plates are attached and that the insurance and registration decals and papers are current.
Check that you have adequate fuel for the trip.
Ensure that the tires have good tread and are properly inflated.
Check under the vehicle to see if there is anything hanging down or there are pools of fluid.
Check the turn signals and ensure that the high and low beam headlights are working.
Inside the vehicle should be free of rubbish and preferably cleaned and vacuumed.
Check that the lights, wipers, horn and defrost work.
Ensure that the seats are secure and the seat belts fasten and release.
And finally be sure that the doors open and close from the inside of the vehicle.
Be sure that you have the licence and registration for the vehicle.
The last test inside the vehicle is to ensure that the parking brake and foot pedal both work.
The foot pedal should both apply the brakes and release the brake after the driver takes his/her foot off the pedal.
UNDER HOOD
• No leaks
• Check fluids
• Oil
• Radiator
• Brake (Master Cylinder) located on the firewall directly in front of steering wheel
• Windshield washer fluid
FRONT OF VEHICLE
• Start the vehicle - turn on low beams and left signal
• Glass is not chipped, cracked or broken
• No body damage
• Headlights are working
• Left turn signal is working
• Right parking light is working
• Licence plate is attached with valid decal - if decal is on the front
• Bumper is secure
• Nothing hanging down and nothing leaking under the vehicle
DRIVER’S SIDE OF VEHICLE
• Top of the vehicle not damaged
• Glass is not chipped, cracked or broken
• No damage to the body
• The lights are working
• Nothing hanging down or leaking under the vehicle
• The doors open & close from the outside
REAR OF THE VEHICLE
• No damage to the body
• No damage to the glass
• Licence plate with valid decal (insurance and registration for the vehicle are current)
• Turn signal and parking light are working
• Licence plate light is working
• Bumper is secure and not damaged
• Trailer hitch is secure (if equipped)
• Exhaust is secure and not damaged - light tap with foot - DO NOT TOUCH WITH BARE HAND - MAY BE HOT
PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE
• Top of the vehicle not damaged
• Glass is not chipped, cracked or broken
• No damage to the body
• The lights are working
• Nothing hanging down or leaking under the vehicle
• The doors open from the outside
ONE MORE QUICK AROUND
Change signal and switch low beam lights to high
• High beam lights work
• Right signal works - front, sides & back
• Finally, brake lights work
INSIDE THE VEHICLE
• Sun visors work
• No damage to the glass
• Windshield wipers & washer fluid work
• Nothing on the dash or rear window ledge
• Defrost works
• Warning lights come on when the key is turned to the ON position
• High beam indicator works
• Left & right turn signal indicators work
• Doors open and close from the inside
• Seats are secure
• Seat belt fasten and release
• Insurance & registration documents are in the vehicle
• Top of head restraint is positioned at top of ears
TEST BRAKES
• Test that the parking brake holds the vehicle in place
• Roll the vehicle forward and ensure that the brake pedal applies and releases the brakes

I love this dude. This is like Driver's Licence test prep AND general life advice altogether in one single video ( ... "You don't get a second chance to make a first impression.") Also, he kinda reminds me of Red Foreman from that 70's show. He could totally play Red's missing twin brother.

Agreed! And definitely more hair, haha. I passed my driving test last Saturday, btw. It turned out that I didn't need the additional forms of identification, you had mentioned in the video (I'm in PA) but it felt great to be sure that if needed I had them with me. I also really found the little bit at the end about 'pooping, breathing and visualizing' helpful! The test felt to me like easily 50% skill and 50% mindset (calm, focused, etc). I am not exactly sure how, but I took a couple of deep breaths during key moments in the test and they were very helpful to keep me focused on what I was doing. So thanks for that tip!

Thank you Sir for all your videos. I passed my G in Toronto just because of your videos. I driving instructor tried to feed me all the wrong information as I was taking directly G1 to G just by taking 2 lessons from him and using his car for the test(had previous driving experience from India). Hey there Rick I have a question about the vehicle I will be using for my class 7N road test on monday. Is a small chip in the windshield allowed on the passenger side. it is not cracked but theres a tiny chip about the size of a looney in the windshield. other than that everything is good

Great video. Really helpful. In Europe why is it required to use the hand brake everytime you stop? Also, why do they use the push-pull (shuffle) method when steering? Thanks!
Hi Jazel Marie - thank you for your comment. Different places have different driving cultures. In some places I've been, for example, 'U' turns are commonplace. Here in Canada, for the most part, we don't do 'U' turns - it's not part of the driving culture. Europe has a driving culture of hand-to-hand steering and using the hand brake when they stop - not sure there is a definitive answer. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. The reverse lights seem to be the only lights they verify which seem to be impossible to check without someone else's help. I suggest doing some of these checks next to a commercial building with a reflective window. That way one can easily check all the lights on both the front and back of the vehicle on their own.

hello. For the real road test. what's different between Class7 and Class5? I mean after Inspection
there are still plenty of things missing in this video that you can still fail very easily in BC for ex.
-engine oil check to be done by cleaning with tissue the way we actually do in real life (i did not cleaned with tissue and they did not accepted,
-battery need to touched and make sure its secure and free of corrosion,
-who will check the belts?
and list goes on...)

They took point for not checking the tire lugs , seat belt check for rear, engine timing belt check, even though in my car you can not check belt with out disassembly ( vw atlas)
Rick, i had a small stone chip in my windsheild, i had it sealed right way.
Its still visible but they just inject a resin into it to keep it from speading.
Will they give me a hard time about that?
I have the same but it isn’t sealed... did they give you a hard time?

I checked my car, when park brakes are on and if I will put my car in drive then it will not move. But if I will escalate then it will start moving little bit.
Is there any problem with my car park brakes? or its normal?

Hi Razel Natonton - I can't give you a definitive answer my friend. In most cases, if it doesn't interfere with the driver's view, it's going to be alright. But it's also up to the discretion of the examiner. If you get a grumpy ole' examiner, s/he might deny you the test. Can you find another vehicle, or is that going to be a problem? Probably an odd question but can you put your hands on your lap when you're at a red light? Or the examiners want your hands planted on the steering wheel throughout the 1 hour road test?
Are you taking a CDL test? If not, your passenger vehicle test is only going to be 20 minutes at most. Keep your hands on the steering wheel. Cheers Rick

Why is it that my Wisconsin cdl pan flit is so advanced with these portion of the test but all I have to do is the basic stuff you are showing me?

What is my dash board bulb went out but the bleanker works? Will they fail me?
what is all brake lights work but the brakes squeak a bit, will the not let you take the test or will they maybe let you take it but give you a restriction until you get it fixed ?
Hi Kyla Bethea - squeaky brakes shouldn't be an issue my friend. Did you you do a tug test on the parking brake and a response test on the brake pedal? If not, do that. As long as the parking brake is holding the vehicle, and the foot brake is stopping the car and releasing, the brakes are working. Check too that you have brake fluid in the master cylinder. Class 4 requires a pre-trip inspection for which you have 20 minutes to complete. And for Class4 you can drive a bus with less than 25 passengers including the driver. Cheers Rick

Luck favours the prepared my friend. Focus on slow-speed manoeuvres. They're not sexy, but these will teach you mastery of the primary controls (brake, accelerator, steering wheel), and will give you a better sense of where you vehicle is in relation to other road users. I have a dime size crack in the top left corner of my windshield. Not in my view or the passengers view. Will that be an issue for me?

If your seat belt on your vehicle won’t adjust because it is jammed ( pulled out completely) would that stop you front taking test ??
Is it the driver's or the passenger's? The seat belt is a safety issue and if it's not working that will cause the test to be postponed. Either get another vehicle, or get it repaired. Drop us a note if we can help further. Cheers Rick

@@smartdrivetest so it basically not retractable so it’s twisted inside and it is all the way pulled out so it may be to big and not fitting on the passenger . It’s not fitting and I can’t fix it because it stuck, it can buckle but the tester may not feel comfortable because it isn’t tight fitting to there likings you kno

G test denied bcuz for some reason one of the three brake light wasn't working.

@@smartdrivetest I think if one fails a test, the person has to wait for sometime to reapply. But I guess in the case missing test/or like technical issue i was able rebook test on the same day. Now, i am scheduled on 17th Jan. The cost for first try was $91 and for this rebook, it's $45.

The examiner was same as for my G2 in Dec 2018. She had failed me then, i think she would've failed me now also, she confuses the driver and talks harshly that's what i heard often about her. It'll great if you do vid on how to stay calm, when you might've strict examiner even rude on some level. I've seen a lot of complaints on google to.

@@smartdrivetest you can see the plate on the back. But because I have a custom steel rear bumper, the stickers in the plate are barely visible
I just will like to post that in my state as of July if you take your test and don't pass you now have to go to driving online class through the DMV even if you in driving school it don't matter I just thought I should post about this I no it's for Ohio I don't no about other states I took my test when I was not really 100% ready last week I took it just to get the feel of the test I go to take my test today and they would not let me so just make sure you 100% ready because it could cost you money and a push back test like me I no this have nothing to do with this video I just don't want no one to go through what I went through

My dad recently cracked the taillight cover. It is still functional. Would I still be able to take the test?

Yes you do my friend. A class 4 restricted is a regular driver's test with a pre-trip inspection. The pre-trip has to be completed in 20 minutes. Send me an email and I should be able to help you out. Cheers Rick. rick@smartdrivetest.com
