Hello, this happens pretty frequently. But I must confess I have done it as well. There was a four-lane intersection, two left lanes, one straight and one to the right and I hadn't been to the place before, I knew only the direction (city name), no gps. The left ones were the ones I needed to take, but they opened up right before the intersection and the direction was written right above the semaphore. So I was travelling in the straight Lane and as soon as I saw the direction, and put my flasher to the left, but naturally, the left lane was full of cars. Luckily, a car made me a way and I could squeeze there. But I am not happy about it, I should have gone on and get back on track somewhere safe.

Hello there, I've been driving for many years first UK, then Lebanon and now Oklahoma , USA. My question when on a main road with right turn filter lane, who has the right of way? Me, somebody turning left or a car crossing the intersection? I have a particular one in mind and am always very wary. Thanks
@@smartdrivetest Thanks for replying so promptly. There are no signs other than filter arrow on the road. Intersection is Nowata Road 60 (main) Bison Road SE, I would be travelling from west taking Bison to the south. Thanks so much. I forgot to mention this is Bartlesville, OK, that may help!
The most common problem when there are two left-hand turning lanes is the driver on the left changing lanes to the right during the turn. This is especially common if the street both drivers are turning into has at least three lanes in the direction being turned into; the driver on the left will often assume that the driver on the right will move one lane right during the turn, leaving room for him/her to do the same. But if the driver on the right does not do that, it can create a collision, which would be 100% the fault of the driver on the left. IF YOU ARE IN THE LEFTMOST LEFT TURN LANE TURNING ONTO A CROSSSTREET, YOU MUST ALWAYS TURN INTO THE LEFTMOST LANE OF THE CROSSSTREET. Only AFTER you complete your turn can you change lanes (if it is safe to do so). Never, never, NEVER change lanes in an intersection!!! (If you need to be to the right soon after making your left turn, then plan ahead and use the RIGHTMOST of the two left-turn lanes.)
This literally happened to me. I was in the right left turn lane as my next immediate turn was to the right. The guy in the leftmost turn lane tried to sideswipe me switching lanes. At the SAME TIME there was a car turning right from the opposite direction. ALMOST caused a three car collision; thank goodness I was paying attention and slowed down/honked my horn. *Smh* some people think they own the road. Thank you for confirming I drove correctly, staying in my lane, and letting me vent.
Yes! I was looking for this comment. I have a local 2 lane left turn that turns immediately into a 2 lane left turn, and I always feel tense because without fail at least one car always veers.
@@randomichigo23 Happens to me all the time, especially the town I live in there is this one 2 left turn lanes, and I drive semi so I take other of the 2. The outer one can go left, or straight or right turn. If I go left, I go out in the middle then swing to make my turn, and kind of have to hug the line so my trailer tires don’t rub or tear out sidewalls on the curb. I always get someone drifting into my lane, or thinking im going straight instead of turn even though blinker is on. I pull a three axle equipment trailer, with a stretched frame daycab semi. People don’t understand that if I gotta come over to their lane a bit to make a left, or even a right turn it’s not to cutoff. It’s so I don’t bust out a sidewall, or bust an axle by curb hopping if I’m fully loaded.
@@randomichigo23 My favorite is when I gotta make a left turn, or right turn onto a road I know is a truck route and it’s a tight turn. And there’s a car that can see I have my blinker on with my window down pointing for them to back up so I can safely make my turn and not hit them. Had one the other day, tight turn going left and lady just sitting there over the line. Didn’t move just sat there staring at me.
I accidentally cut someone off when I was turning left coming out of a road with just a stop sign, going into traffic right after a traffic light. I had a safe gap from both sides but didn't anticipate that there would be traffic coming from the right turning left. They had to change into the right lane immediately as I had come in right in front of them at the last moment. I get really nervous with left hand turns, whether I'm waiting for a safe gap ahead or in cross traffic as I have a hard time judging what a safe gap looks like and then also going into the turn at a good efficient speed to be safe.

@@smartdrivetest oh yes. Thank you. I just wanted you to help me to identify who has the right of way on a multilane intersection. Like who turns before who😁. Its confusing to me because I used to drive in a small country with less complicated roadways😁. U can do a simulation if not the actual thing..or refer me to a video from you that I may have missed.
In Toronto: when turning left onto Queens Quay west, drivers do not always observe the broken lines to make a sharp left turn, & by the time they make the wide left turn, they end up onto the curb designated for streetcars, end up in a streetcar tunnel! That is why flashing red lights are for a reason to get driver's attention! In Winnipeg: the problem with eastbound Broadway, ending @ Main Street, is a dual left turn lane, because pedestrians cross @ that intersection with dual turning cars coming towards their right direction, right in front on Winnipeg Union station!

It's unlikely that you'll get a ticket my friend - unless the police officer is a real ogre and in a really bad mood that day. Try to get into the turning lane as soon as it starts my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
What about an intersection with 2 right turning lanes across from a single left turning lane. Both directions have green lights, no green arrows. All 3 lanes (the 2 right turning lanes and the opposite side of the street left turn lane) will turn onto a 2-lane road. My understanding is at a red light, when all 3 lights simultaneously turn green, the car turning left onto the 2-lane road cannot go first if there is a car turning right from the outside (leftmost) right turning lane opposite him. Make sense and agree?
When switching lanes do I look at review mirror first then signal and look into my side mirror & over the should OR signal, look at the rear view mirror, side mirrors and blind spot and go? I always thought it was the second but someone told me it’s the first so now I’m confused cuz I’ve always done the second 1 LOL & i don’t want to fail.
Heyyy khim so you wanna always do everything at once it isn’t about how you do it it’s about making sure you do it all so when turning lanes you look at the side view mirror then turn blinkers on look behind and on more time in the side mirror then go
Hello teacher. I hope someone or you can help me answer my question. I have a scenario: I move to the big intersection, and I want to turn left. I see that I have a red arrow (of course, if it were green, I could move immediately), after a few seconds, I see that the arrow to move straight forward is green. Hence I slowly move to the middle of the intersection for waiting until the oncoming vehicles (from the opposite lane) pass my car and I can turn left. However, I hear that the car behind me Bip Bip at me (I really do not understand why). My question is: do you wait and not move to the middle of the intersection until the left green light turns on and turns left? Or what I did was correct?

420 some people here in Fairbanks do that at one certain intersection every day. I stay in the inside lane to stay out of the way of those people who are turn right just after making that left hand turn in the outer lane.
I get anxiety and have yet to drive the highways and thruways etc by myself only when I’m with someone. I’m more scared of not knowing where to go and when to merge. Also scared of getting anxious while driving.

ok so at 9:05 is the perfect example of what i want to explain..... If its a double left at an intersection into a 3-lane road with no markings on the intersection, is it the law for the left lane turning car to stay on the furthest left lane or can they go into the middle lane as they turn? .. i know common sense says left lane go into furthest left.. but is it written as a law somewhere?
@@ChrisM-r3f literally no. I think the only way im gonna find out is after a crash in that situation. The court will tell me casue i cannot find the answer literally anywhere

Smart Drive Test Thanks for your response! And as for the inside left turn lane, is it required to go to the left lane on a 3 lane highway (or any amount of lanes for that matter)?
Hi Jonathan Swann - Thank you for your reply. Yes, if you're in the left lane, turn into the left lane. Always best to stay under the signs and look for the road markings. What you don't want to do is deviate out of your lane. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
I failed 5 times in assessment test reason no proper stearing control. Having lane change problm no proper front mirror check. Reduce speed without reason. Please help me
Hoping someone could help me with this scenario: There is a 4 way intersection in my city in which one of the directions will have three lanes: The left lane is a forced left, the middle lane can go left, straight, or right, and then the far right is a forced right turn. The road that the driver turns right on has two lanes that go straight and then a turn lane to the far (or inside?) right that is a forced turn to a freeway entrance. My question is which lane belongs to which driver? My assumption is that since there are two lanes that go straight on the new road, the middle lane turning right should stick to the far left (outside) lane giving the forced right turn lane access to the straight lane on the right as well as the turn lane for the freeway entrance, also on the right. No lines in the intersection to direct each lane.
To add to this, the turn lane for the freeway entrance starts at this intersection, so basically you go from a two lane road to a three lane road with one of those being the freeway entrance lane if travelling that direction already.
I know how intersections work but what do you do when people don’t follow the right away and just go and you don’t want to go if someone decides to go the same time as you

Hi Wendy Salazar - Thank you for your comment. And yes, it's important to learn the streets, especially in and around the test centre where you're going to take your exam. And if there are three lanes, you want to drive in the middle lane. Also, look farther down the road to read the road signs and anticipate the changes in the road and traffic patters and that way you can be proactive. That guy might not of purposly cut you off. If he's new to those intersections he or she might not of really understood it. I have done it before because those intersections are fairly new to me because in my town we don't have them. Are you doing a live video Sunday night?
Hi michael johnson - Thank you for your comment. And yes, some times that happens. Still, that driver was sitting right beside me when we were waiting for the light to change. And because I was driving straight into the intersection, for a moment, I was in front of the driver. So it would have been really hard for him/her to not have seen me turning. Moreover, when turning, left lane to left lane; and right lane to right lane. Only after you get around the corner and have the vehicle straight, should you change lanes. And yes, I'm doing a live stream on Sunday. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi EpicThe112 - Thank you for your sending me the map. Ideally, if you're turning left you want to be in the right lane after you get around the corner. However, if you're going to turn left from US 22 then you would want to be in the left lane. But as I said above, when turning, control your speed so that you're in the spaces between the vehicles beside you. That way, if the car cuts you off or changes lanes inexplicably, you're in a good defensive posturing because you simply tap the brakes and the car should miss you. I hate when people choose the wrong turn lane. People don’t know how to plan their route. They take the inner lane and then as soon as the turn is complete they switch to the outer lane. Like why not just take the outer lane from the beginning??
I passed my road test yesterday , Rick. ❤️

Thanks
Good question! Send me the address of the intersection you're thinking of please. Cheers Rick
All good information. Thanks, Cheers Rick

Lol that perfect example cut off is in my neighborhood in Kelowna! Such bad drivers here! Except me because I watch your videos ;)

Hello Rick , I need some advice on those centre turning lane where cars in either direction can use this lane.
Very useful information.
What about as you merge into the two left turn lanes? Can you cross over(the solid white line) to take the inside left turn lane?
When switching lanes do I look at review mirror first then signal and look into my side mirror & over the should OR signal, look at the rear view mirror, side mirrors and blind spot and go? I always thought it was the second but someone told me it’s the first so now I’m confused cuz I’ve always done the second 1 LOL & i don’t want to fail.
Heyyy khim so you wanna always do everything at once it isn’t about how you do it it’s about making sure you do it all so when turning lanes you look at the side view mirror then turn blinkers on look behind and on more time in the side mirror then go
I wished you as my son's instructor ❤

Hi 1div2PIfc - Thank you for your very observant comment. In editing that video, I must have watch that video a dozen times and did not see that van run the red light. Always give space and even when we do the other drivers don’t respect the road and the vehicles.
420 some people here in Fairbanks do that at one certain intersection every day. I stay in the inside lane to stay out of the way of those people who are turn right just after making that left hand turn in the outer lane.

ok so at 9:05 is the perfect example of what i want to explain.....

I’m learning to drive, and I made this mistake yesterday. I accidentally cut someone off because there were no lines on a double left turn and I went into the wrong lane. I feel so stupid. I hope that this video helps me!
Hi Jessica S. - We're happy to hear we could help out. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
After I approch exit on the freeway to turn left on left lane on intersections, Also Semi Truck is on the middle lane to turn left while I was on the left lane to turn left in my black sedan, after green goes light, I turned left, and then Semi truck turns left from middle lane to right lane, suddenly, truck turns over multi-lanes to left lane instead of going to right lane and I ends up going turn left again to freeway again bc of truck. I was rush to the work. 😤
I get confused on the lanes like when I'm driving and I'm in the right hand lane then all of a sudden I see a turning right lane on the street idk but I get confused sometimes when I'm driving I need to learn the streets
If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi Canada Train gamer - Thank you for your comment. And I will put that on the list my friend because I need to do a road test with a highway or a freeway. All the best, Cheers Rick

You almost look like Red Foreman from That 70s Show!
Some people can’t drive in Florida, and they don’t even know how to merge change, and turn on there blinkers.
The goat
Some really obscure types of lanes and roads
Happened to me when I got cut off from a multiple turning lane with car in front of me changing right away from his assigned turn lane to mine this is intersection of Uniontown Road CR-519 and US-22 West Phillipsburg NJ. 40 scenarios with multiple turn Lanes should I take the one going to the right lane then change right after on the main road to the left lane.
Hi EpicThe112 - Thank you for your comment. It's going to happen my friend. Your best defence is to drive in the spaces between the vehicles of the cars that are beside you and ensure that you shoulder check. I'll need you to send me the link on Google Maps to answer your question. All the best for the holidays, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest here is the intersection www.google.com/maps/@40.6809232,-75.147235,3a,75y,28.9h,88.18t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1smH4CknuWV8n1pxEecCZqtA!2e0?authuser=0&hl=en CR-519 St James Ave Uniontown Rd & US-22
Hi EpicThe112 - Thank you for your sending me the map. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Okay thank god I’m not the only one stressing about this
Hey Rick, Question: When at an intersection with a lot of lanes & traffic signals hanging above, what lights should you be looking at?
Hi Reel76 - Thank you for your comment and query. You should be looking at the signs and lights directly over or in front of your lane my friend. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest What about some of these intersections with 4 lanes and only two lights?
Hi Reel76 - Apologies for the late response. Do you have an address of an intersection to which you're referring. I'll be ablet to look at it on maps and give you specific information. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
very important thanks!
hi, i have a question: why do you have to immediately switch to the right lane after turning left?
Hi aylinv95 - Thank you for your question. The left lane is considered the passing lane, therefore you move back to the right lane to allow faster traffic
to move past you to facilitate the flow of traffic. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
I learn something new

Are all multiple left turn lanes governed by the same sequence of traffic signals? That is a green arrow followed by a circular amber signal followed by a circular red signal.
Most commonly, yes. Both left turn lanes usually get the same sequence of signals.
lol in Ontario we don't have gravel in the middle of the intersection

Hey Rick, I think the people who disliked your video must be a driving school instructors, as they couldn't explain as better as you. LOL
Thank you my friend for your kind words. I think in conjunction with the hater trolling the internet, there are also the thumbs down people - they just want to see if they can get a reaction. All the best, Cheers Rick
When people don’t signal as they are changing lanes, it really make me angry but unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it except stay far away from those drivers.
Hi Kowan McGarry - you are correct my friend. It's not a matter of "if" it's going to happen, but when. And you're a smart driver to create space between you and other road users. All the best, Cheers Rick

@ 4:09: these are the type of people that cause accidents/ serious accidents
I've had that a few times where I've been cut off. Take care out there my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
I recently had a guy that cut over into my lane and because I honked at him he slammed on his brakes and I ended up hitting his SUV and the impact was so bad it flipped it over with his kids inside and I am the one that gets the ticket and found at fault for the accident even with dash cam video of it.
Im 15 just trying to figure everything out lol
I hate when people choose the wrong turn lane. People don’t know how to plan their route. They take the inner lane and then as soon as the turn is complete they switch to the outer lane. Like why not just take the outer lane from the beginning??
?????
What is it you don't understand my friend? Cheers Rick
Them, they cut you of on purpose.
Multiple U-Turns, inside left, next lane adjacent U as well..ah yes. Let's see it
