WHAT ARE MUSCLE KNOTS?
Muscle knots are hard, sensitive areas in our muscles where the muscle is in a shortened, contracted state even when the muscle is supposed to be at rest.
These muscle knots are commonly found in our neck, shoulders, upper back, and hips and are a common condition that affect millions of people everyday.
These tight areas of contracted muscle are also referred to as "trigger points" as oftentimes touching these areas can "trigger" pain in different location in your body.
Muscle knots can cause a painful, aching sensation in the muscle that can refer to nearby joints as well. When you touch it it feels tight and contracted despite your efforts to relax that area.
Muscle knots can also feel swollen and inflamed and can contribute to other associated problems including headaches, stress, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping.
Muscle knots are a common condition that I see in patients in my physical therapy clinic all the time. Fortunately there's a lot that you can do about them to treat them safely and effectively right at home!
Today I wanted to share some of my favorite tips, tricks, and exercises to help you get rid of muscle knots in your neck, shoulders, and upper back. I've also included video demonstration of each of these methods to ensure you do them correctly and maximize your outcomes.
HOW TO TREAT MUSCLE KNOTS
Keep in mind that treating your muscle knots can take some time. You didn't develop them overnight; chances are they're not going to go away overnight, also.
To treat your muscle knots you'll need to break up the knotted tissue and calm down the inflamed nerves.
Below you'll find a list of the most effective methods to alleviate your muscle knots at home.
1. Heat: applying heat to an area causes capillaries to dilate, thereby promoting more blood flow into that area. Increasing blood flow to a muscle can be an effective means of getting knots to release.
2. Stretching: muscle knots are areas of the muscle that fail to fully relax/elongate. Stretching the muscles in which these knots lie is an effective way to stretch out the knot,
3. Muscle Activation: by working the muscle in which your knot lies you can increase blood flow into that spot and promote relaxation. Contracting these muscles is also a good way to fatigue this area and get the muscle knot to release.
4. Postural Correction: poor posture is one of the primary contributing factors predisposing one to muscle knots. Taking actions to correct poor posture and promote improved alignment can significantly improve muscle tension and pain.
5. Postural Strengthening and Muscle Activation: Stretching the tight structures through the front of the chest and shoulders while strengthening the weak muscles of your upper back in between your shoulder blades is key in improving posture and decreasing propensity for muscle knots.
NO-EQUIPMENT BACK WORKOUT: • At Home Back Workout -...
6. Massage: massaging muscle tissue is a great way to decrease tension and "break up" those chronic muscle contractions. We decrease tension and promote blood flow into an area when we massage it, so massage is great at alleviating muscle knots and associated pain.
7. Trigger Point Release: Trigger point release is applying a deep pressure directly on a muscle knot and maintaining that pressure 15-60 seconds. The theory here is that we actually compress capillaries and "starve" the knot of blood and oxygen. After the muscle fibers "release" we then release our pressure and blood/oxygen comes rushing back into the spot, thereby maintaining the relaxed state.
Do you get muscle knots in your neck? What works for you to help get rid of them?

This video has been life changing! I’ve dealt with tension knots since my daughter was born in 2005. I’ve seen massage therapists, PT’s, and a chiropractor weekly. The knots were sending tension up my neck and into the base of my skull. The exercises provided immediate relief and I’ve continued to do them regularly for a week or so. Just wanted to say thank you for your videos and willingness to share with everyone!!
I am so glad this was so helpful for you and thank you for sharing your experience!

We used to call these knots “ trigger points “. Treatment was a combination of just what you are saying, stretch, warm, cold and fairly aggressive finger massage directly into the trigger points and work on improving posture….started using these modalities about 1980…
Finally, someone explains knots effectively. I've asked PT's, chiros, massage therapist and they don't have a great answer for it.
Oh, thanks so much! I hope this helps you with those knots!
@@toneandtighten I agree - it finally made sense about the pressure creating a reduction in blood flow which encourage fresh blood to resaturate the area

Also pay attention to how you're sitting while you use your phone. I didnt realise how badly I was pressuring some of my vertebrae until a few weeks ago when I stopped to pay attention to it. Cause if your head is tilted past like 20° from normal it puts something ridiculous like 75lbs of extra compression force on your spine and I was holding my head like that for hours...

Why don’t you ask your patients to agree to a video of themselves carrying out their exercises, especially whilst giving instructions and offering guidance. If not, then you have the option of asking a family member to assist you.
I assure you that any current or potential new clients will appreciate the personal touch when you mention that they’re actual patients, and even better if you are able to inform them of their progress. Your involvement is sure to promote a sense of professionalism.
Sorry for being so presumptuous, but I’m sure you will benefit.

You're so welcome! I am glad you are enjoying these stretches and thanks for sharing with your students!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I broke my shoulder skiing almost 5 years ago. I went to PT for months after my surgery. Everything was addressed except my scapular area. To this day it is in a knot. I have started to do these stretching exercises, which pull the scapular area as well, and I am hoping and praying to get relief soon. I also have a frozen shoulder that came after the surgery. I have a foam roller that I have had for way too long. Probably should get a new one, but if it isn't broke...
You are welcome! I hope these tips help!
I appreciate the advice and sharing your expertise. Thanks!
My pleasure!

The shrug, retract, hold then drop is marvelous. I can't believe how immediately effective it is! Having scoliosis means my posture is always unbalanced. Thank you for the valuable tool to help combat all the knotted muscles.😁
You are so welcome! I am glad you found this video informative!
Wow, thanks so much. All the tighteness that I was feeling for the past few days just seemed to melt away! Feeling so relieved.

Loved your video.
The most important, new thing I learnt today is that ears should rest directly above the shoulder! That's such a small, but significant information!
And I also loved the chemistry between you two.
I hope they help you, Rima! I use the "ear over shoulder" tip all day long with patients and it really helps!

After multiple car accidents, and working as a chef constantly looking down at a cutting board, my neck and shoulders are tight and knotted more often than (k)not, practicing along with you guys i can already tell these stretches will make a difference in my life.. thank you!

You are very welcome! I hope they help!
You’re amazing
God bless you forever!
I like the tennis ball against the wall “massage”. I found that putting the ball in a long sock, before using it, will help the ball from constantly dropping to the floor. It’s not easy to keep the ball between you and the wall.
Thanks for sharing!
Vicki Goguen Genius. Thanks for the great advice! I have chased far too many stray tennis, lacrosse, and massage balls whilst trying to treat my knots. Plus, your solution gives solo socks that have lost their partners a second life! 🙌💕
I use ladies tights with the tennis ball.
Or do them on the floor
Brilliant, thanks so much 👍 ...I spend more time chasing the ball than massaging with it!
