Installing Aftermarket Wheel Covers (Wrong Way keeps it from falling off)

- NOTE: This is how I have done the installation but it doesn't mean you should do it the same way or it's right. Just thinking different.
The wheel covers keeps falling off so I keep buying them and costing $$$$ but I found if I do it differently it seems to work well. Yes, it's the improper way of putting it on.
I purchased these wheel replacement covers from Walmart but there are lots of other generic and aftermarket brands out there that are similar.
After I lost a few of these wheels covers, I though I share my experiences and how it turns out if I flip it around.
I found these just as well as the original OEM wheels covers only if these wheel covers stays on.

@@dennispangilinan6575 the part of the ring that domes out is for the valve. Always point the domed bit downward towards the hubcap
Thank you for posting the video. A few things, one, the ring tab should be facing down, not up. The other, if you need a tighter fit, install ring on the lower part of the tab and not the top for a tighter fit. Also, install the hubcap on all the sides so that the top part is the only part sticking out. Put a knee on one side and your hand bracing the other and then tab in the top part that is sticking out. Just trying to help make it easier and less breaking...
Yeah, I tried installing it with the tab up and it wouldn't fit, then I looked at the ones I was taking off and it faced down. I wasn't using the same covers as this guy though, I don't know WHAT kind I have they came from Amazon and didn't have any instructions or anything, they just came in a plain brown box. I've never changed a wheel cover in my life until I just had a blowout and lost one. Well I did lose one years ago but it was the repair shops fault and they bought me a new one and installed it.

To keep you hub caps from falling off, clean the wire ring and the areas where the ring clips onto to the cap and apply a thin bead of Gorilla Glue or some other type of good adhesive to each spot let the adhesive dry for a day or two completely before putting the cap back on the rim. The ring will not slide any more and and the cap will stay on the rim. I know this will help.

Wheel cover and hubcap advice. If your vehicle has wheel covers its always best for you to remove them before your vehicle gets work done by a mechanic. Most mechanics are careless with them and break them. If they are held on by plastic caps the mechanics break the caps. I have had mechanics break my wheel covers before. They don't tell you or care. Especially if you know the work being done involves removing your tires.

Unless your wheel covers are held on by the actual lug nuts then you should remove them. If it takes you less then 10 min. to do, is easy, you should do it. I agree that mechanics should be careful but they just aren't. This way you got nothing to worry about. Factory, OEM, wheel covers aren't cheap so don't risk getting them damaged/broken.

As many others have already stated, the bend in the ring should be facing down to follow the cut in the hubcap for the valve stem. That is the entire purpose for that bend in the ring, to properly fit around the valve stem. More than likely, the reason there is such a large gap between the cap and the wheel is because the bend is pushing the cap away from the wheel, this would lead to it popping off easier. Old video I know, many comments stating the obvious already as-well, but hey -"the more the merrier" right?
I know the right way on wheel cover (face down) but these cheap wheel cover doesn't stay on tight that way. If you think different and flip it, it stays on so it won't fall off driving around. How to prevent from losing the wheel cover.
The thing is though, that the diameter of the ring doesn't change because of the orientation, up/down. Which means that there is no additional pressure or hold when flipping the ring around. The only thing it may do is cause issues with the clearance of the valve-stem or even push against the wheel preventing the cap from properly fitting. In the videos it instructs people to put it on improperly, not stating that "it just happens to work better the wrong way for me when it shouldn't under normal circumstances". I still fail to logically see how there is any benefit, since the diameter doesn't change, the force being applied to hold it in place doesn't change. I guess I can see this helping if the valve stem is in the way for some reason and flipping the ring over/up allows the stem to pass between the cap and ring... but that's just me speculating :P
Sorry, I didn't mean to say that you didn't know the proper way, but rather letting those that stumble upon this video looking for "How To's" know that they shouldn't install it that way.

You're awesome man, I appreciate you taking the time to reply and update the info, that's really cool of you. I'm glad it worked out for you though, it's already a pain in the rear to have to replace the original caps, it's an even bigger pain in the rear the replace the ones you've just replaced :)

THE RING HAS THE LITTLE NOTCH to stop it from touching the air valve. But put it this way - what would you rather have... hubcap with a slight gap between the wheel or your hubcap comes off? LOL.

My Amazon hubcaps retention rings doesn't have that little notch in them for the valve stem? What do Ido?
The ring is on wrong that is why you have that gap between the steel wheel and the hub cap. There should be a towel or something soft to lay the wheel cover to prevent damage.
THE RING IS ON WRONG. Gap has to face down and NOT up.

Its simple, just follow the instructions on the box.There are 2 places to put on the retention ring, and you want to put it in one of the places where the cover is firm on the steel rim, not loose. You can also put some twist ties on to ensure the wheel cover won't fall off.. For all wheel covers, especially factory original, its best to take all 4 off before your car gets work done, this way the mechanic can't break them or damage them. I have had mechanics damage several.

I had to place the ring gap in the up position, otherwise it was putting pressure on the valve stem. They seem to fit fine this way, and so far they haven't come loose or fallen off. I tried it both ways and it seemed to work better in the up position. The instructions were kinda vague...

I tried both ways before. If you put it the other way, the wheel covers will fall off when you are driving. Take your pick.
I installed some a few days ago. They go on very tightly. Would moving the ring down a notch make them easier to install?

The aftermarket covers fall off because they rings they come with are much thinner than the original ones. In my case, I had my original covers so I took off the rings from the originals and put them on the aftermarket ones.
Most Toyota's or at least the ones I've had have Metal Valve Stems. They seem to interfere with the Metal Wheel Cover Ring. Anyone else have this issue?

The best way is to observe how the factory covers on a similar model are applied.... if it’s upward you put the ring upward if it’s downward you apply the ring notch downward.... don’t reinvent the wheel..... no pun intended

This video is wrong the exact reason they do fall off is because you're putting the retention ring on the wrong way the bump on the ring must be facing in not out thats why they are sticking out from the wheel look on OEM wheel covers and the bump in the ring will always be facing in not out!

I find no difference in looks in aftermarket wheel covers as opposed to factory wheel covers. There is no point in spending lots of money to replace a factory wheel cover (s) when you can buy a set of these in typical silver for $20-25 a set.

@SuperBigmat, you're wrong. Having it the OTHER way could damage the valve. That's why the raised indention is their in the first place.
I bought them at Walmart as well and it is best in the inner notch for a tighter fit for a 1995 Saturn and I drive it everywhere and they seem to last but I boughten some different ones and those fell tip before buying wheel covers buy ones that have alot of clips some that have 5 or less seems that those come off right away!
The ring is on wrong! No wonder you have lost a few. Majority of universals I find have the rings fitted incorrectly and after a few miles they fall off. A good idea is to make the rings slightly bigger by bending the air valve groove outwards then the trim will be a lot tighter.
Are you sure the ring goes facing up? Is that why there is a gap? I have seen other videos where the ring is facing down.

Hey. I have a 15" Wheel Cover and I have no idea how to install it. I have a Nissan Cube 2011. the metal ring is not like yours, it is kind of cut. any idea on how to install that?
Thanks, my Honda originals were bolted on with the wheels nuts. When I got the cheap replacements, I wasn't sure how the wire ring was supposed to be attached to the cover. Now I know. Thumbs up!!

Can you put wheel cover on alloys
Guys, my girl has a 93 Sentra and when I removed her original wheel covers the notch was pointing down. I tried it notch up first but the valve stem was preventing the cover from being seated snugly up against the rim and was sticking out where the valve stem was. When I put in notch down it went around the valve nicely and the cover fit like a charm. My advice, try it both ways and see what works for you.

How are these aftermarket? they're just repackaged new-old-stock from an old abandoned Dodge factory.
everybody says retention ring should point down, that is how they fall off, if the retention ring is pointing up, it is much more secure.

It's much better to buy factory originals cuz they hare usually much better quality (excluding toyota) and will stay on much better. After markets are made very cheap and tend to fall off way more often than originals.
Take my word, I've lost over 5 sets of aftermarket in the past year and only 2 originals I've lost.
Btw I'm an expert with this as I've been collecting hubcaps since 2008

They fall off either way because they are cheap and badly made its also a good idea to put the ring on the inner grove for a tighter fit they seem to last forever if u do this but not all after market covers have a second grove
sure a lot of people said now but the notch is not supposed to be against the valve stem. should be the other way. hub caps i jsut got don't have a notch though in the metal ring but there is one on the hub caps. i was more wondering about the adjustment thing there is 2 holes and you move it to adjust tension i guess and was wondering how to know what one to use.

The ring goes on the other way...... you're way it wont fit properly on most car rims because the valve stem sits tight against the rim. I did my girls hub caps and tried doing it you're way and it would not fit properly. I flip the ring back around with the bent portion facing the hub cap and their still on. Going on a month now.
Fyi, I always check my ride after it's been in the shop, believe me it's a good habit to have.
Likewise, why pay more :)

Listen up son...the loop in wire ring goes DOWN for your valve stem. you have yours wrong is why you have the gap between hub and tire.

Um, no, no and no. Enough said. From one Sienna owner to another, buy the ones from Amazon.
If the factory original or OEM are held on by plastic caps or the actual lug nuts there better. Much harder to loose. If your factory/OEM wheel covers are the snap on kind then these are the exact same. Its just not worth paying the ridiculous price the dealer/company wants for factory/OEM wheel covers. After all you aren't going to impress anyone with wheel covers and your vehicle will drive the same no matter what you use. As long as you have a nice matching set of wheel covers on most people won't even notice. Spend your hard earned money on other things useful.
