Love this method of a practice tutorial before going into a whole painting. It's really helpful having the info on timing, pressure, uses, etc.. As a beginner there's so much to take in, but this is so helpful to know how to practice the techniques before committing to a full painting.

Karen, I have been making custom tools from polycarbonate and plexiglass in different shapes for scraping and making lines and also to make mountains similar to a painting knife but my own design. I sent two of them to andrew broussard and he used them in some of his recent videos if you want to go see them. One is a triangle shape with three different edges and one is a rectangle with about sixty degree cuts on both ends to make lines , digs, scrapes and things. I know these card things are free but the ones i made are more personal and designed with special angles and edges to be a more useful tool.

*curious about a few related(ish) topics...one being using fountain pen inks for washes as there are some very beautiful inks that have either shimmer or sheen qualities and the other being somewhat experimental of treating the back of the watercolor paper with a light treatment/saturation/spray of alum which is used in marbling...i was thinking that it could produce some unique effects as it reacts to the front of the paper and the other pigments being utilized...in fact some Suminagashi techniques applied to the front and then painting wet onto dry might be interesting*
