  • I bought this 1974 Plymouth Duster online sight unseen (weird I know). The dusters in pretty rough shape, but that doesn't stop me from attempting to see if the 318 will run! If if starts, you know I've got to test drive it. Do you think this one will have brakes?

When I tore down the 318 from my 69 fury, I thought I was going in for a re-ring and valve grind.
She was a little rough and smokey but still started well didn't knock and made decent power. What I found was 7 cracked pistons, 3 burnt valves, a cam gear with more than half of the plastic teeth completely gone, and an oil pump completely full of muck and ground up engine guts.
Once I spent way more money and time than I wanted to, I got her back together but it just would not run.
Took days to figure out the distributor spins "backward".
My mom still has a picture of me grinning like an idiot surrounded by that first start smoke cloud.
That engine taught me a thing or two about life and such..

I certainly think the new direct drives are faster and quiet but I do miss that high pitched whine! The gear reduction was designed to spin over the (big blocks) more easily.

In the early 90s working way out of state I bought a 79 Magnum XE GT for $200 at an impound lot to get me home. I probably spent another $200 in normal wear items and fluid changes and drove that car all over the Eastern US with the only problem being a flat tire. Four friends and I decided one evening to go from the coast of North Carolina to an hour West of Chicago to pick my girlfriend's brother up and drop someone off and we averaged 82mph. Such a comfortable highway cruiser that got taken by the hurricane that hit a week after getting back or I'd still have it. I even worked for Dodge later on hoping to get another and I'm working on getting a 79 300 now.

Man this hit me right in the heart... my dad had a 74 Plymouth duster.. it was brown.. i got the car in my teens as my first..
It was a slant 6.. and stayed that way..
No mods it was all original..
When you said the duster you got wasn't running i said can't be..
Engine wise... You can't kill a duster..
Everything else will go.. but the engine will always be a runner..
And she started and ran ....
    She's running!!!
Electrical seemed to be an issue with these dusters as they get older..
I had all kinds of electrical problems with my duster in the end just before i turned her in to the big car yard in car heaven.. i junked the car because the tranny went on it..
I actually have dreams i get the duster back and i drive her again..
My dad called our duster baby..
Because he babied her and she needed to be babied to keep it on the road..
Maybe with all that care and attention your duster needs.......
