He chucked in a bag of dope too and invited us to dinner.. About 20 years ago my wife and I were just married, dirt poor, and livin on love. I had a 74 duster with a 225 and a 4 speed. The 225 burned about as much oil as gas. I had just got done building a 75 and a 76 with a buddy. I had plenty of left over goodies from almost a year of junkyard pillaging. I was aching to put a 340 in it. I had one with a big ol thermoquad, a k frame, a set of subframe connectors, a set of headers that were actually right for the car...the whole nine yards. Mrs didnt want me to make our duster into a go go buggy that she couldnt drive. Anyway we had the road trip from hell. 5 flats, had to put diodes in the alternator, ignition box went out, you know...regular stuff. About 20 miles from the home 20 the lower rad hose exploded. I stopped, looked under the hood, saw the mess, shut the hood and drove on. It got so hot I locked it up. Three times. I fully intended to stick a piston so hard that Id break a rod. When it finally stuck so hard that it wouldnt break loose in overdrive, we were about a mile from her uncles house who really enjoyed his sudsy beverages. We got there, and he enjoyed about another case of suds and we rounded up a chain to drag it off the highway before dark. When we got to the car it had cooled off and for the fun of it, i hit the key and it fired right off. He carried me to town, I stopped at old Reilly's and got a hose, went back and put it on and filled it with water and drove it home. Knowing Derek's wife is more than likely always with him on these revivals it just goes to show how good of a woman, wife and mother she is, supportive to the very end.
I disagree, she isn't supportive of him.. they are a singular entity, a team, and if you look close you'll realize every video, every car, every project they release videos of is very much what their family does to make a living. He could not exist without her, and she could not exist without him. At least not in the context of the life they have chose for themselves.
One of the things I enjoy most about your videos D is the soundtrack. You always have great original compositions. And its a nice mix of rock, easy R n B kinda groovy funk jazz, blues and pseudo country. Whoever writes and records the music kicks ass!!!
It's hilarious the finally came out with a new hot rod garage....many blue brother references in the episode. And then I watched this and well...I'll be dipped

Well I'm just tickled pink to have the dynamic car duo of Dereck and Dylan in one video. You both are national treasures and I love every video I watch from both of you. Thank you
Those old slant 6s might go through oil like Grant went through Richmond, but they'll keep on running. A feller had a 74 Duster once upon a time and she was a good old car.
I had an old rotted out 77 dodge van .slant 6. 3 on the tree ..Drove that ole girl from ohio to Tampa bay Fl. Then back to Ohio then back to Tampa bay .then drove her 1 year in Fla before scrapping her
Back on 95 myself and a friend found one of these in a junkyard, slant 6 with a manual three on the tree. Bought the whole car for 100 buckles, put a battery in and it fired up and ran right there. No title for it but we still had fun.
I must say, dude, you put out some of the best videos on this stuff. And when you said something about the "animal" on the fender and the red wasps I got to thinking that eventually your gonna have a hilarious video where you get lit up by some...well...them weird animals and red bugs, 😂. Great old Duster.
A friend of mine told me a story once. His buddy had the mentality of "A/C? That's what windows are for." Well, one day the two of them were driving through VA through a heavy rain storm. It was 103° and there was no difference between having the windows down or up. They were sweating that bad.
Those slant 6 engines run 4 ever. I had a 73 that I switched to a manual three on the tree. It was green with Gold Duster doors. This video brought back high school memories.
When you were giving it the berryman it gave me flashbacks of the time I fed the 225 in my old Lebaron a sonic rt44 cup full of water to try and blow all the ash out of the cylinders. Then I tried driving it home from Nashville and it spun a rod bearing and caught on fire on the interstate. A 20oz of Vanilla Coke put that fire out. Good times
Had a 73 Dart as my first car. Wish I still had it. Oil around spark plug is because there is an aluminum tubular insert in the head surrounding the spark plug with a rubber seal (like a square cut o-ring). Few people replace the seals, so they harden and leak. The end of the insert also gets extruded out by the spark plug, so it is best to use the round end of a ball peen hammer to dress the hole where the spark plug goes through back square or slightly concave when looking down on the tapered end so that the insert squishes the seal into the head when the spark plug is tightened.
Welcome Home to Tennessee! I'm sure that you will miss paying State income tax and all the other expenses doing business that you enjoyed up North, but we are glad to have you and your family here Sir.
Say what you will, but our higher tax rates bring us pretty great health care and education here in Minnesota. When he said that I was like "Yes, yes I am and there's a pizza waiting for me downstairs." and a few moments later Derek is at Pizza Hut buying a pizza. What a coincidence.
I believe the other Duster you picked up was also missing its kickdown linkage. Shouldn't be surprised when the transmission goes directly to 3rd without that vital setup in place and operating. I've always heard that driving without it will destroy a Torqueflite in short order, but at least one of your Dusters survived for at least a little while.
was so bummed out. i used to help a highschool friend with his paper route, and a lady who had a 1970 base model with no rust sold it for only $200! and it ran just fine. this was the mid 90s.
Had a El Camino in Vermont and never got stuck in snow or mud. No wipers in it. Whenever inclement weather arrived we would be looking through the mosaic window through the duration. Gained new appreciation for little things. Like wipers!!

Welcome to the South, Derek. Those red wasps have a more potent sting than the black & yellow ones and they leave a knot for a couple of days. This looks like another good Hellcat swap project, lots of people are wrapping those Challengers around trees and what not.
My first car was a 1972 Plymouth Valiant Scamp. Same power plant as this Duster. Got it from my granddad and something was always wrong with it. never idled right consistently, ended up formulating a knock then a rod slung and cracked the block. I was told the slant six is a hard engine to blow, but when you do, it's done and that it was. loved and hated working on that car. Wish i'd learned on it more and never blew it up, but life goes on. Maybe one day I can have another one for old times. Always love when you small humans go along for the rides. Can't wait to do that with my small human.
AAhhh, the good old days when, if you dropped a tool in the engine bay, it clanked, rattled, and fell on the ground. Or, it would end resting on some part of the frame or suspension where it could be seen and easily retrieved. Tools (and or parts) dropped in the bays of the new cars seem to disappear into another dimension.
True. I installed a new battery in the wife's car recently, and it cost me an extra ten bucks to replace my 10 mm combo wrench that fell into the Bermuda triangle. I spent half an hour looking for it. Then went as far as to remove the belly pan in order to try to get my wrench back and show that Nissan who's boss. We all know how that turned out.
I own two Dusters currently and I’ve always loved them. My 72 started as a slant car now has a nice fresh 360. Keep us updated on your progress with the Gold Duster!

'73 Duster with a Slant 6 engine...my second car when I was a kid. Thanks for the memories! Oh, yeah...remember not to whip that car around some corner with any kind of speed. Those things were tail heavy. Great car for drifting training before that was ever a thing.
My 1st car was a VE Valiant station wagon with the "225 ci slant" in front of a "3" speed box with > Colom shifting goodness ! Yeah ! those were teh day's ;)
Aussies sure know what to do with the /6’s too! In the European US-car scene people call them boat anchors mostly. It’s such a waste as these engines can perform when treated the right way. Perform AND be bulletproof!
My first car was a 67 Dodge (bought in 69) Dart 225 with auto trans. Had it for years and couldn't kill it. Finally took it up to Brown's junkyard when somebody gave me a Chevelle. The guys at the junkyard drove the Dodge around the 40 acres of dirt, picking up parts for years after that. Great car.
Congrats on the big move! I wish my family and I had the guts to pull a move off like that! I’m not sure how it’s even possible but your videos keep getting better and better! Keep it up! Hope you guys settle in nicely!

I'm 73 & have been working on used cars since 1964. I wish I had your skill sets and knowledge. Enjoy the end results, just get'em running and looking OK. Keep it going

Best tuber on the air.
One of the things I enjoy most about your videos D is the soundtrack. You always have great original compositions. And its a nice mix of rock, easy R n B kinda groovy funk jazz, blues and pseudo country. Whoever writes and records the music kicks ass!!!

Yes!! This was my Mom’s car (in blue) way back when. Loved it!! It had a little duster tornado emblem I’m by the back window.

Well I'm just tickled pink to have the dynamic car duo of Dereck and Dylan in one video. You both are national treasures and I love every video I watch from both of you. Thank you

Going to be a lot of "remember that one time we broke down" in those little humans life.... Perfect.
Those old Mopar starters have a unique sound I’ll never forget
In the old days that sound was called the "Hamtramck Hummingbird ". Every Chrysler auto had that starter sound.
I just always felt like it sounded WRONG. Crankier Than Tanya Harding when she got kicked out of skatin'

red wasp yeah sorta bad, but the german yellow jacket found in east central Indiana is 10 times worse.....
Wait till he discovers humidity, mosquitoes and dog pecker gnats.
Then back to Ohio then back to Tampa bay .then drove her 1 year in Fla before scrapping her
Yeah, the red wasps are worse.
Back on 95 myself and a friend found one of these in a junkyard, slant 6 with a manual three on the tree. Bought the whole car for 100 buckles, put a battery in and it fired up and ran right there. No title for it but we still had fun.
I'm so excited to have you on the east coast!!!!! Please keep us informed of places you will be so we can come see your events!!!
Dylan and Derek together in the same scene is a dangerous level of awesomeness

@@mediocreman2 Dylan McCool - the guy who sold him the car in the video.... Did you even watch it?
In Tennessee? Love the volunteer state. That state now is home to two of my favorites wrenchers. Congratulations on the new shop 👍
I must say, dude, you put out some of the best videos on this stuff. And when you said something about the "animal" on the fender and the red wasps I got to thinking that eventually your gonna have a hilarious video where you get lit up by some...well...them weird animals and red bugs, 😂. Great old Duster.
Now that you have moved south, You are going to find that A/C becomes more important than working brakes!
Truer words have never been spoken!!!!
Preach
A friend of mine told me a story once. His buddy had the mentality of "A/C? That's what windows are for." Well, one day the two of them were driving through VA through a heavy rain storm. It was 103° and there was no difference between having the windows down or up. They were sweating that bad.
Those slant 6 engines run 4 ever. I had a 73 that I switched to a manual three on the tree. It was green with Gold Duster doors. This video brought back high school memories.
My, Aunt Bee, had one too.
You needed a manual trans with those leaning towers of power…. They were bulletproof but they had the power of a donkey with 3 legs….

Good times
My dad had one of these when i was a kid. Every time i see one of these i see my dad. The old slant six seemed to run forever.
Tennessee is great - lovely place to go to college, as I did - but there are some serious trade offs to every state, frankly.
Sorry you have left Minnesota/Wisconsin, Derek. May health, happiness and good fortune follow you and yours always!
What is up with the 20 dollar car wash? That's crazy!! I have never heard of that, you get the super deluxe around here for up to 8 bucks.

I don't like vids where people from two channels get together. Neither person acts like themselves, they're afraid of crowding out the other or something, when I want to see Vice Grip Garage I don't need any 'special guests' from other channels. Just my .02
My mom drove one of these in high school in the 80s, so cool to see one running. Same color too!
Had a 318 3-speed manual in mine back in high school. Always wished I had the 340. 😎
When Derek said “Ya getting hungry?” I felt that.
When he said that I was like "Yes, yes I am and there's a pizza waiting for me downstairs." and a few moments later Derek is at Pizza Hut buying a pizza. What a coincidence.

I was wondering how near Dylan was to where you moved. Why, that's just spittin' distance. Nice to see you picked a good neighborhood. Perfect.
This was the perfect vid j o for the post move endeavor.
VGG, Dylan, Tennessee, and an old Duster. Can't wait to see the new shop!
Was that vid j o an AvE reference?
I believe the other Duster you picked up was also missing its kickdown linkage. Shouldn't be surprised when the transmission goes directly to 3rd without that vital setup in place and operating. I've always heard that driving without it will destroy a Torqueflite in short order, but at least one of your Dusters survived for at least a little while.
I've heard of the Arkansas Guarantee. If the car falls in two, you get to keep both halves.
LMAO. That's the guarantee I got with my first car..
Derek, I was just wondering if anyone at any of the many O-O-O-O’Reilly’s stores where you’ve bought stuff has ever recognized you?

Yeah ! those were teh day's ;)
Aussies sure know what to do with the /6’s too! In the European US-car scene people call them boat anchors mostly. It’s such a waste as these engines can perform when treated the right way. Perform AND be bulletproof!
