ABANDONED 1971 Buick Riviera Boat Tail! - Will it RUN AND DRIVE 100 Miles Home?

- Опубликовано: 10 июн 2021
- Several times I almost threw in the towel on this one! This is a RARE, very sought after 1971 Buick Riviera Boat-tail, with the famed rear end designed after the 1963 Corvette Stingray. It's got a 455, Th400, Buick Maxtrack rear end and best of all; it's been off the road for 30 years! Think it will run and drive back home?

The ease at which this guy does the dodgiest things imaginable with no discernable stress is great entertainment lol.👍
>>>>>>>>>>> very entertaining
Living in MN teaches you to not stress on the rd most cars are rotten so bad from all the salt you get used to driving nightmares around lmfao
His calmness is top drawer
I have three degrees, and watching Derek work makes me question all of my life decisions. I wish I were joking.
My father in law was like that. His most spoken sentence was "aww it'll be alright". I'm high strung and he just blew my mind
Thank you, Derek for giving me the procedure and the courage to resurrect my father-in-law's '71 Riviera. Today I got it to start for the first time in 25 years!
Congrats! Beautiful car, enjoy it
Lucky to have found that!! Well done keep ‘em alive!
My grandpa's 1972 Buick Electra 225 currently runs but has been in a barn for 30+ years, 70k miles, interior is a literal time capsule. I've not been making time to go over and give it the small love it needs like wheel cylinders, brake masters, and ps pump. I'm going over to work on it tomorrow, he's 85 and the car was his lifelong best friends who give it to my grandpa when he passed away. I want to get it to a couple meets with him this season

Yip, me too, have to question your laws in the US that let's this guy drive these POS vehicles on thr road with other humans. Anyway, it makes good watching.
@@deanstevenson7517 laws exist that do not allow him to drive vehicles in this kind of shape. Those laws are ignored. He basically takes a self assessment and of the equipment during all the drives he does to make sure the risk doesn’t exceed his ability to overcome whatever comes up. @@wcpportfolio oh I agree, he Is brilliant and very entertaining, just wondering how he gets away with it, cheers
@@deanstevenson7517 extraordinary luck for sure! Mixed with a bit of knowledge of red flags the state trooper might be looking for. "I got a back track waterfall like you wouldn't believe and don't you go chasing it!" Derek never seems to run out of humorous witty things to say which is one of the reasons I love watching his channel. I do the same thing when working alone and I just don't say these things out loud when I'm working alone. I'm sure many of us are but I have to say that he does this so well that he could probably take up doing stand up comedy if he ever gets tired of fixing these old cars. But I doubt that he ever will get tired of that. It's just too embedded in him. Fixing these old cars is just in his blood and who he is and I would love to be able to turn a wrench with him someday. Wouldn't that just be a treat. LOL

You have got to restore this incredible machine. The boat tail Riviera is perhaps one of the best sculpted automobiles to ever come out of Detroit, it's nothing short of high performance rolling artwork.
Sir, you are the Bob Ross of the automotive world! The way you go about addressing and repairing your vehicles, is quite inspiring. "Keep up the good work!"

These videos are simply the best. As a viewer, a guy always should be careful while drinking hot coffee and watching the videos because at anytime, you can and will make a comment, and a feller can't stop the coffee from running out his nose. Outstanding entertainment and MacGyver value. Thanks Derek!
Dad had the same car. We ended up putting the 455 in a 1966 ambulance. We got the family together one night and after a few cold snacks we camouflaged the whole thing. Great memory for sure. I miss my dad so much he passed away earlier this year 😢. I love your videos brother keep it up

Think they only hassle the gays with expensive super sports cars… They are not envious of an old car that looks more like a wreck.
They wouldn't dare!

She's a keeper. Rebuild that engine and tidy up the rest and that's a super-deluxe ride. Buick nailed the design on this. :)
It's a POS unfortunately. Doh
There is an associate I know locally here rebuilt a 72 which was is in even much better shape than Dereks. He sold the car to some guy from Calif for 75K last year at this time. As stated it was in perfect cond even before he had it repainted and the engine was nicely chromed over with all kinds of goodies. He said the chrome AC unit cost him like $1,500 bucks so no telling the truth in that matter it was a master piece he even had the wheels re-chromed locally.

This Iconic Buick would be a treasure for whomever ended up with it... Such incredible styling and that motor, crazy how it got resurrected by you in the field like you did with such humor tongue in cheek.
Every time you show another vantage of the styling, I just have to remember to calm my pounding heart, the deck lid on the rear there is amazingly unique, obviously including the vents as you mentioned but just its shape is so completely crazy... If anyone saw this deck sitting alone in a field and they were not born yesterday, they'd know what it belonged to immediately.
If it were me, I'd just make it safe to drive and enjoy, reassemble the interior best possible, clean it up a bit more, and auction it off back to the collector market, that one of a kind rear louvre set up is still desirable to the Buick collector enthusiast, put the money towards more rescues, maybe find a small block donor care with complete drivetrain to swap into the older Buick, cool show and look forwards to more episodes.... Thanks Derek !
Don’t chop her up! Leave her intact and lay the shine juice on. A gal would love to see that.

Favorite car and mechanic, the trick with the windows amazed me, simple but genius… a lot of folks wouldn’t have even thought about doing that
I understand exactly what he's saying about Buicks - my 1967 LeSabre 400 shares a lot of parts with the Riviera and it is so dependable and easy to live with. Buick knew what they were doing, for certain. I love this channel, it is extremely entertaining.
Derek’s troubleshooting skills are top notch. They way he figured out how to get those windows down was amazing.

Absolutely, the revivals is what brought us all here. That’s what will keep us here.
Me too
While I agree, I do understand the need to branch out. A guy can get burned out doing the same type of thing for years on end.... So while I've never been a big drag racing guy, and probably will skip some of that content, I understand why he wants to do it.
Not every video is going to appeal to every subscriber... and I've seen it happen to a lot of youtubers over the years... where they feel they have to chase growth and end up getting burned out doing only the types of content that maximizes views... in the end everybody loses because the creator loses that original passion that got them the following in the first place.
Long story short, I hope Derek just keeps doing what makes him happy and is content that he can't please all the people all the time.
Agree.
Out of this whole vid what impressed me the most was those window motors still working and you being able to lower them on the fly just like that!
Derek,
I really hope you decide to keep this one and fix it up for you and the families Sunday rides. I know you have a couple of Caddy’s around the same vintage but the 1970 Buick Riviara has such a unique design and is much rarer than any Caddy from that era. She is the definition of a “cruiser”.
Derek it’s a Boat tail. PLEASE clean it up and flip it!
It’s a keeper. Put ‘er back on the road. I really liked watching how methodical you were with the Cadillac. Something like that with this Riviera would be great.
The ad used to say “Something to believe in.”
Someone needs to hook Derek up with a Shell Rotella sponsorship... The man has been yelling good things about it from the mountaintops forever...
Took my dmv driving test in one of these. Dad was a manager at Buick. The video was thrilling. Always great to see a grown man throw chance to the wind. 😄 Your skill level is awesome.
Power windows, power seat, snob-level horns and high power acceleration, in '71, that was Executive Class luxury.

You're a good man, good husband and a great Dad, an inspiration to all. Keep up the good work. Love the videos and the humor!
So a feller was talking to “She who must be obeyed” and we decided that we have to have that boat tail! So if you flip it, we might be wanting to catch it!!!
🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺These kind of “drive them home videos” are the best. We feel you take us on a adventure with you. 🍺🍺🍺🍺
Couldn't agree more
When you’ve been watching his videos on and off for a while, the hill scene comes up and you realize that you’ve driven down that same hill for years 😂. Never realized he was so close.
I recognized a bridge you crossed in this one… you weren’t far from where I live. I love your humor and the way you go about tackling these car issues! What’s even better is what I see when you are around your family! Keep it up!
