Unfortunately the videos here often doesn't come out by how much good they are but by how well they do at the algorithm, they are pretty much a company now. Thats why u see so much fnaf here.
The story is interesting, but it's pretty straight forward and has a fairly obvious conclusion, so while it's fun to figure out the plot on your own, I don't think there's much LORE to actually theorise about that isn't just obvious if you played the game.
Man, I love how they handled Abigail's tableau. The game really lulls you into thinking there's going to be these neat grounded little self-contained murder scenes to investigate, you think you've got a handle on it, and then everything just... escalates so much.
Yea I totally dig it too. It's like, you think it's going to be a rinky dink murder mystery, then KRAKEN IN YO FACE
Keep playing! KEEP PLAYING! It honestly starts to move much more quickly once you unlock some more memories and have the ability to switch between all of the characters easily, and you generally start getting them a few people at a time because you rule out so many options so quickly. It's not nearly as daunting as it seems now.
I'm so glad Mat is finally playing this, this is like THE perfect game for his theorizing

Its usually quite frustrating watching people play this game because theres a lot of clues and details that get missed but Matt's surprisingly quite fast with learning all of this.
I know right!! I've been watching playthroughs since I finished and they usually frustrate me beyond belief but Matt picks up one the details so well! That's why I hope he continues this let's play.

MatPat, you are THE Game Theorist. We asked you to play this game because we enjoy hearing you logic your way through mysteries and figure out difficult puzzles. Not only would I wanna share one of my favorite games with one of my favorite RUclipsrs, but watching THE Game Theorist solve and theorize themselves through an incredibly well crafted mystery game made my day. We wouldn’t ask you to play this on GTLive if we didn’t want to see that. It doesn’t matter if you take too long, I am willing to go on this journey with you regardless of how long it takes to complete. Just vocalize your thought process as you go through the game, and I don’t think it will ever get boring. Watching a theorist theorize, as a fellow lover of mysteries, please finish this game on the channel.
So excited to see Mat play this game!! Definitely one of my favorites games of all time!! Quick tip to help: if you have seen someone in a memory you can go to their image in the painting and identify them, even before seeing their death scene. This can help you not forget details you learn while watching other people’s death scenes!!

Same, mat and the channel have been consistent for like 12 years, so it sort of feels like a constant that you can go watch cause he doesn’t get involved in controversy and is positive, but not overwhelmingly positive where you feel bad. I definitely feel like I’m better for having watched them for so long and there’s so much information and learning I’ve gained from them

Oh Mat, you've stumbled on a game that is One Of A Kind, and more importantly, perfect for you specifically. PLEASE continue this.
I just want to say that you got Maba faster than most, as most people assume him to be Charles Minier before Maba, as they get tripped up by him potentially being Breton due to the tattoo designs.
It's funny, I spent ages thinking that, y'know, just cuz he has those tats, doesn't mean... and then you realise this is the 19th century and most people didn't have those back then.
I never connected the tattoo design to possibly figuring out a nationality and he was one of the last I filled in 😂😂😂
I love the style of the way this game looks, its like you walked into a comic which I'm sure was on purpose
The dev wanted to make a one bit game and this is the end result, quite an ambitious project but a worthy successor to his previous game papers please

I love this game and honestly would absolutely watch you do a full series of this.
Also I'm fairly certain you actually can fill in people's names before you find their page in the book. Go to the picture and there should be some button you can press when hovering over a person to open up a window where you can name them. I think it's just left clicking but maybe it was something else, it's been a while since I played.
Also note that many people will get unblurred since you technically can figure them out but at a very high difficulty (noted by the number of triangles above the picture). However, often more info will be revealed later on. So there's no need to stress too much about naming every unblurred face right away.

Lucas Pope is such a skillful developer. All his characters are wholly unique and memorable, even when you know them only for a few scenes, like Sergiu in Paper's Please, or even minor characters like Messof Annegovich in the same game. Take Martin here, whcih you saw in that scene, for example. Remember him at the end, and you shall see why I love him. Good luck on your mystery solving. Also, the main menu music is SUCH A BANGER!

43:40 You can. Click on their faces in the sketch. It will bring up a small screen to input their name. You may fill in Martin now. Also, you are the first youtuber to catch the hint on how to identify the tatooed man. Wether you are correct is up to the game to tell you.

It’s been a while so might be misremembering, but Cracking the Cryptic(a sudoku channel who streamed this game) did find the same line im pretty sure
@@mawillix2018 I have seen like 8 playthroughs of the game and nobe of them caught it this early. Two of them caught it at around the time they were down to half the seamen, formosan and the chinese topmen. Mat is the first one I saw getting it as soon as his face unblurred

@@gabrote42 I have watched parts of 4 playthroughs of the game, and I think cracking the cryptic did it the slowest out of the four (although, they did get the quality before the origin) The other commenter is correct that they got the tattoo logic.
To be fair though, today is the first time I watch a channel that isn't about puzzles play Return of the Obra Dinn. You were probably watching famous gaming/reaction channels play the game.
This is one of the best puzzle games ever made. I've wanted you to play this one for a long time. I know it looks like a whole lot at the beginning, but I will watch you through the whole thing if you decide to play it "live." If you don't play it live, please do finish it regardless.
You gotta keep playing this game! It's one of the greatest mystery games ever. The story's crazy, and the deduction process (while challenging) is really rewarding and fair. I'm sure you'll love it
Also, you can actually type in the names before inspecting the deaths as far as I know. Just click on the characters in the book drawing of the crew.
really important thing to know for future episodes, you can click on someones portrait in the sketches and fill in their name at the top where it says unknown. also, the upside-down triangles where the name is indicate how difficult it would be to deduce who they are. try to ignore them if they are 3 triangles, as you will probably get more info/clues later on!
OH MY GOD I ALWAYS WANTED THEM TO PLAY THIS GAME BUT I THOUGHT IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN BECAUSE ITS SO OLD.
I think this game works great as content. I was completely drawn in trying to figure out who was who and keep everything in order in my head. It didn't even feel like an hour had passed.

When I first played this, this was when I found myself enthralled by the game.

Just some non spoiler game mechanic advise. The reason your hand shakes and a mist comes out is because there is a body in that memory that is not on the ship. You can only access some bodies through other memories. Also, you can add names without having that characters page yet. Just click on them in the group sketch and click on top of their picture where it says unknown. I believe you can also do this by clicking the name list in the first few pages of the book. Also I am obsessed with play through of this game and have watched multiple people finish it. I was so happy when I saw you were playing it! I'd advise, since people seem to like it and you like playing it on video, to at least watch everyone's memory scene. It should take only three to four episodes. Also you are the best I've seen play this yet. You are picking up details really fast, that I've seen others have to revisit memories multiple times to get
Matt is pretty thoroughly engaging with the mystery mechanics more strongly than almost any streamer i’ve seen play this game. Please do keep streaming it matt! It’s absolutely thrilling!
OH MY GOD FINALLY SOMEONE PLAYING THIS GAME. This is one of my favourite games of all time and somehow it is so unknown despite being from the creator of Papers, please.
It took me only about 10 hours, it is NOT A LONG GAME so please finish it :)
*Reccomendations to make things easier*
I highly recommend NOT immediately jumping from corpse to corpse like the shaky watch encourages you to, but first try to complete as many people as possible in the current scene while also *looking at which pictures became unblurred.* Solving things will be much easier in the later scenes if you already have people identified. If you move to the next scene you also lose the information of who just got unblurred because no more people are unblurred. I also recommend *going through the scenes in chronological order* once you have all unlocked ones to review the story.
24:40 Yes, that's the right idea. Unblurred->drop evt and try to get the name. Only move on if you really can't figure it out.
33:30 You can cloud place the corpse if you want to unshake the watch but then I would go back to the previous scene and finish combing through it.
34:20 If you go back to the previous scene you've got the more filtered view again.
36:50 Also *always put down any information* immediately, even if you're not 100% sure. You just got alot of name ideas but didn't put anything in the book, despite already being able to. You don't have to wait for the death page or for people to unblur. In fact, you don't even get a death page for every character. You could put in everybody's name at this point.
42:05 You DO have access. It's from the drawings and the crew list.
Please continue with this game. I think the story it tells is content enough, but paired with one of the most inquisitive and curious minds on this platform is a match made in heaven!
Literally stopped this video, bought the game, and played it all the way through. So well thought out and intricate, extremely challenging but also so so rewarding, what a fantastic game

I love that you're playing this! Please do continue - you're right in that it's probably a bit trickier for "content" reasons, but I don't think many would mind a 10+ episode series, particularly as the game involves logic and theorising too.
You are able to fill in names whenever you want, you can do so from the sketch - clicking on someone and then clicking on the name area of the popup will let you pick a name.

*SPOILER ALERT* I somehow avoided ever looking at shoes, I was able to figure out one or two people somehow based on their height in the hammocks
AND SOCKS AND HAMMOCKS AND CLOTHES AND FAVORITE FOOD AND LITERALLY EVERYTHING ELSE.
OMG YES this is SUCH a good mystery game the way you slowly unravel what happened to the ship!! I watched a playthrough where one person was watching and had already played and the other person was playing fresh. It helped it go a bit smoother and avoided really long stuck periods with teeny amounts of nudging in the right direction!

I love the theme of finding out what happened to all the passengers, the mystery of the game is just so fun and seeing MatPat thinking through the whole thing is so much more interesting! I very much would love to see this be a once a week series on GTLive. Watching you work through the clues is excellent! It is, in some ways, like watching you live theorize! But someone has crafted a theory for you to investigate that is complete and ready to be examined!
I played this game maybe a year ago at most, very cool game and it’s fun deducing people’s fates. At a certain point I did have to just guess a ton of them and lucked out with some of the less obvious things.
I do appreciate that the game lets you know that guessing is a valid tactic. I see a video that covers how you're *supposed* to figure everyone out, and there's a couple where your only real clue is 'He's Chinese cuz he's wearing this particular kind of shoes, and he's not that guy', so you just have to cycle through your options.
It's a really solid game! But I feel like you don't have to actually guess that much (I found myself having to guess a few causes of death because they were listed under a different name than I assumed it would be), it's just that the hints can become really vague!
I found the most difficult ones to guess were the people who left on a boat. A good guessing tactic is to have two that you know for certain and then make educated guesses on an unknown one.
This game can be incredibly intimidating at first but once you start realizing various aspects of how you can identify people based on various images and the manifest and whatnot, you can really start crossing off names and fates and such really really fast.
i hope they play this through all the way or at least most of the way through, me along with many have been wanting this for so long and id love to see so much more

I remember suggesting this game when it first came out.
There's so much to think about and explain and the intuition you need to solve some if these clues makes it very satisfying.
The plot leaves just enough to your imagination that it's such an enticing mystery but if you look closely enough at everything the answers to every one of the crew and the history of the ship are all there. Such a great game.

This is such a fantastic game, I'm so excited to see Chief Inspector Matthew Patrick on the scene at long last.
32:20 "Strategically, what we should have done is hold off on the ones we definitely know, wait for the ones you're questionable about, and then partner them with ones you definitely know" That's big brain indeed! It's a bit more work since you might need to take notes outside of the game, but in the best case scenario that makes it easier to guess the fates of 1/3 of the crew (since the fates are validated in sets of 3, as long as you have a pair of certainties, as soon you correctly guess the third one the game will validate it). I'm really happy to see you finally playing this, and I'd definitely watch the whole thing (but either way, I hope you have fun with the game!).
Really hope MatPat makes this into a series, the story is seriously intriguing and watching MatPat use his theorist brain to the fullest is the cherry on top!

since you were a bit confused about how this worked: if there is a dead person in a memory and their corpse can't be found in the real world, the pocket watch will lead you to where their corpse was in that memory and make a spectre of it so you can see how that person died.
Also, when you highlight someone in one of the big sketches, you can click on them to bring up a picture of just them, at which point you can click on the text above their head to give them a name.
This is one of my favourite games of all time and I am so excited to see Mat play it!!!

I would have never expected you to play this game purely because of how not content friendly it would be, but I would absolutely love for you to continue it!! Even if it's not an official GTLive, to just have a separate stream of just you playing would be great
Unalived (sword) is used because 'sworded' isn't a word. In translations, other unaliving methods are written in a similar way because those languages have a similar issue, while the equivalent of 'sworded' actually is a valid word in some.

It would be nice for this game to be a series, because it is quite intriguing on how different people come to different conclusions based off certain information. Also the triangles shown above the person's picture shows like how difficult it would be to profile the person and you can profile a person before the game shows you their deaths. And like every single detail counts from their appearances in the memory to the dialogue in the memories such as voice and accent.

(Also, a big tip for this game - it absolutely helps if you have an understanding of the various roles and responsibilities of each person on the ship - even the clothing they wear can be a clue, like the Captain's and First Mate's hats identifying their positions of status).

Sometimes your hand shakes and leads you to a new corpse in the memory because, after the memory ends, the crew would have relocated the body. If you see a door then the next body is still aboard present-day and you don't need a memory to find it.
I’m so glad that you’re playing over there and it is one of if not my favorite games of all time it lens itself really well to theory, making and finding small seemingly insignificant details that end up giving you a lot of information

Avoided watching the rest of this playthrough so I could play this myself, bought it, played it, struggled putting all pieces together (with zero knowledge of pirate ship information) but in the end managed to finish it only so I could keep watching Matthew keep playing this game, now I'm concerned he'd miss on this incredible masterpiece. ☹

I have played through this game 3 times, watched a family member play it, and watched countless RUclipsrs and streamers play it. I love rewatching playthroughs because watching how each person comes to each deduction is almost like looking into how they think. I hope you continue this game on stream! If not, I hope we can here your thoughts on it in a future video!

OMG I LOVE THIS GAME!!! i really hope you play more, and finish it, its such a great game, the graphic style, the music, the premice and mechanichs, and the story is amazing, especially the end and piecing everything together!!!
