Super fantastic video. I fully understand such an issue with the guitar and it's great that you have a girlfriend who understands and supports you and that you have common passions. I've had a very long break from music. A long time ago (I was born in Poland.. in the cult capital of Polish blues) In the old Polish times (PRL behind the Iron Curtain) of my art education, I had 4 guitars, which I later sold because no one understood me and my passions were not tolerated.. lack of understanding. I blocked myself and even then, living across the ocean in NY, I couldn't buy a guitar (mental block...) After many years, music came back to me and is in the first place an important element connecting my other passions, film, photography, acting and travel. I recently bet and bought an LP from the 70s at an auction. I was lucky. Take care both of you, best regards.
Wow, Sped my Les Paul is June 16. Same year, model, and finish! Of course mine doesn’t have all those upgrades, but I couldn’t believe the proximity! 😮
Great stuff - I have two les Pauls- a page number one and a number two - the number two is my go to guitar so many tone options with the four push pulls and the two hidden buttons under the pick guard
I can’t believe how high your action is. I play like 💩 on high action. Don’t know how you make it sound so good. Beautiful guitar. Do a video on your strat next please.
I have a Standard 1995 and its amazing too. One piece back with a two piece top on KILLER flamed honeyburst (or ice tea, i rlly dont know) finish. Loving your channel, cheers from Brazil.
I played a second-hand '98 Heritage H150 for 21 years now, great LP style guitar, made in the original Gibson factory in Kalamazoo. Just recently got a Gibson Custom shop 60 anniversary ,1960 V2 "tomato soup burst". At only 8.1 lbs, my shoulder loves it, a lot. It is so authentic the reflectors fall out of the knobs just like the real ones did!
I bought my new LP (black and cream....with humbucks ) in.....1976. Had to pawn it for rent in the mid-eighties. How much would it be worth today? Don't know. Don't want to know. The pain still remains.
@@SpedSpedding I bought an Epi LP same color about 3 years ago. ..for the same price I paid for my original in 76. $350 Hate to say it but...I like it better. It looks kind of the same..but different..and it is much lighter..and prettier...some how. And it sounds better, if I bother to actually play it. Still, bet I could pay a lot of rent for the original. If I still paid rent. The 80's wee tough. Hey, I was recommending you on a Shut Up and Play live stream the other night. He did a demo compilation that was just awesome. Great idea for a video.
Little known fact - 1998 (and 2021 - the year my LP was made) were the only two years Gibson used titanium zircon nubbed saw blades in the factory to cut the body and necks of the Les Paul. Titanium Zircon nubbed blades are known as "tone blades" for a reason - they've been used to cut the wood of some of the most famous instruments in time - dating back to the late 1200's when they were used for Harpsichords used by the famous Roman musician Tiberius Satriani. So well done my good sir, well done. And of course it's always a special day when the lovely Gab makes a cameo appearance in a Sped video.
Awesome video. I love Gibson’s. I just wish you could play/hear my all original 1974 les Paul custom same color (Cream) and everything as Randy Rhoads. Mine is the real deal not a re-issue or a custom made one. The tone is undescribable. It’s my holy grail in all my guitars.
I didn't use my volume controls at all until I built myself a Trainwreck Express amp. Then the guitar volume knobs become absolutely essential. I rewired my 75 LP Standard to 50's style, fixing the treble rolloff.
What a beautiful and great sounding instrument. The latter at least in your hands. I love my guitar as well. Although I only started playing guitar about 1 and a half years ago, I already have such a strong emotional connection with it. It is nothing special, a 2020 Epiphone Les Paul classic, but it’s mine ! Can’t imagine what it must be like for you!
You will build an immediate bond with it! That’s amazing, happy for you. We’ve had work done on the house recently and since Gab has started learning she picked up my acoustic and said “I’m putting this in my office it’s too precious.” 🥹 Proudest moment of my life. 😂😂😂
Hi Sped !! Brand New Subscriber here . As of 10 minutes ago . Hope you and your Family are doing well and staying safe . I'm definitely a Gibson Les Paul addict . I have a '96 Gibson Les Paul Studio Lite in Trans Blue . It had the old Headstock break about 10 years ago . But luckily for me I was working at the Local Music Store and I was , and still am good friends with the Luthier . He did a perfect job . Since I bought it new in Syracuse , New York I've made a lot of upgrades and mods ; Seymour Duncan Pickups installed , all new Pots and Electronics , Locking Tuners , and about 3 months ago I had a Re - Fret done and had a TUSQ Nut installed . It's my only Gibson Les Paul and my only Gibson . So I try to keep it as close to perfect as possible . Anyway , I'm really happy to have found your YT Channel . Now I'm going to enjoy myself by browsing thru your Library of Videos . 🎸
Great stuff, I have a 91 custom, love the upgrades you've done. Seriously thinking about some of them myself..... Been following you and your guitar for some time. Wonderful stuff, great sound, great playing, thank you :)
I use stringbutlers . They solved 80% of tuning issues. But i,m going to check out those tuners. Thanks for the info. Problem is which ones will fit my custom 2017..18??
@@SpedSpedding Hey, It's a deep cherry red.. almost black in most lights. Then it can glow insanely when the light hits it right. I'm gonna start with the graph tech bridge, saddle and tuners. Not really sure tbh, about the pickups yet, was thinking about the J Page wiring harness and go from there. Lots to think about and research. Keep up the great work :)
I was on holiday last weekend in Scotland and watched this and a couple of your other videos with my fiancee who is recovering from pneumonia. We both loved it and Kate could barely catch her breath through laughing... in-between coughs. Being a s4d b'st4rd I actually took a screenshot of the serial number of your guitar a couple of weeks back, so I knew yours was a 1998. I have a 1996 and have gone through similar upgrades to take mine back to more of a Custom-Shop spec. IMO, there's a load of hype around the 'good-wood era', but in my limited experience my 96 is now sonically as good or better than anything coming out of the Custom-Shop... although it's also edging up towards 10lbs. Love your channel.
Hahaha that’s taking spying on my private life to a whole new level. I love it. 😂 Sorry to hear about your Kate suffering with pneumonia. Of course I’m glad to hear that I was helping her to laugh it all away. All the best to a speedy recovery.
Pleasant video! Mellow and informative. Thanks for providing a serendipitous break in my day. Beautiful guitar 😍 Where did you get the hat? If your ever feeling philanthropical, I’ll take both. 😁 Thanks again! Peace love and blessings.
Thank’s so much! This hat is from a brand called Other! They make badass rock n roll gear. Always snag something in the sales they have. Can be up to 65% off!
it is indeed a very nice example. Knew you had done bridge and pickup work but didnt realise you had changed the tuners etc too. Pretty much fully decked. What pickups came in it ? 490/498? I remember you taking the cover off the bridge unit way back when.
Yeah that sounds right if I remember correctly too! Upgrades are definitely like tattoos, once you’ve got the one it’s on to the next. Someone will need to hold me back. 😂
Viisi kiloa painava kitara ei kiitos. Tehtaalta se oli siis vielä raakile, mutta kustomoinnin jälkeen vasta oli hyvä. Honey burst on mun lempiväri myös. I like honey 😁.
Interesting...my Les Paul was completed September 1, 2008. Only mods - 50s wiring of course, vintage-taper neck volume pot, Seth Lover PAFs, Tusq nut and medium-medium frets (about 1/4 less wide than yours). I put the same wire on my Strat- my fingers aren't very long....I seem to trip on jumbos. Make the guitar your own, and it will give you magic!
Working mans Les Paul, I like that a lot! Yeah, I am so done with everyone slapping the same fat rock track from Epidemic Sounds on every video. I love jazz music. I have it on every morning in the house.
The plain top is my favorite. All of this flame is out of control. Don't get me started - too late. My old flame top burst is so faded you cant really see it. You are so right about dark guitars. All the youngsters think treble is a bad thing. You have to cut through the mix. The first thing I do when I plug into a Marshall is turn the base all the way down. Rory Gallagher used a Strat, a Vox, and a treble boost. Page said he say Rory live and went out and bought treble boost the next day. I have a set of early 60s Gibson PAF's and some other nice ones, but my favorite are cheap MIK PAFs, also Maxom super 70s. They are amazing. You just never know with pickups. The standard Gibson 490t and the otherone are the worst pickups I have ever owned. Thats my rant. I feel beter now. Good day.
Sped, your Les Paul is a "BAUUT" or how we Canadians say "Beautiful "Guitar. Love the honey burst. We say "Honey" like you say "Honey" . Just be strange as hell any other way really. Cheers
Hey Sped. It looks like it's in perfect shape. Did it look as though it had been well played when you got it? I also wonder if the original owner (if they're still around) knows you now own it? Does it have any dings, or scatches?
The guy actually emailed me a few years in a row to say he was keeping an eye on it on my RUclips which was nice. Haven’t heard from him in years. It was pretty immaculate when I got it tbh. He was happy to see it being played. 🥹
For the ultranerds out there - I think most 90s les pauls came with 250k vol/tone pots, which makes humbuckers sound darker and duller. Apparently this was deliberate on Gibson's part, as people at the time wanted a smoother, darker sound. Changed the pots on my '96 studio to 500k while changing pickups - now much brighter. So, if you have a les paul that age that's too dark, maybe try changing the pots first, before shelling out for new pickups... Enjoying the vids (and the northern sense of humour)....
A few people have said could I do a pickup change in stages. It just takes extra time and I like to do it all at once. I get you though and it makes sense. I need an assistant. 😂
@@SpedSpedding know what you mean - I'd already bought the pickups when I found out about the pots, so just did it all at once. Suspect the originals would sound much better with just the pot change, but quite happy with what I have, so they're not going back in. Maybe next time....
Nice LesPaul you legendary guitarist you. Your videos are the best great when you do some bits with Gab...love you guys. Me I'm actually going back to Ibanez basses....small hands....carnies.. anyway best to you guys.
We love working with each other. If we had more time I know we would do some killer stuff together. She's the best. I have an Ibanez Artcore. Always been fond of it.
Wow! One of, if not THE, best video I've ever watched on RUclips. I've always loved this guy's humour and this was to perfection. I like movies like American Psycho and Nightcrawler but this was better. Brits are good at this kind of humour, I guess it is an British invention, to be over the top serious about something. And it works best when it's so close to how the artist really feels. Perfect. Just perfect. 👏
😂 amazing. I’m so glad it translates. The odd person unfortunately thinks I’m being completely serious and at times angry. It’s mostly satirical but I do love guitar and my Gab. ❤️ Thanks for watching Chris.

Awesome video Dude! Great content and super high production values that we have grown so used to seeing from you. I'm seriously thinking of making the same mods to my 1984 Studio-Custom Les Paul in a Cherry-Sunburst. It has the original Tim Shaw pick-ups and super low action with Jumbo Frets. I'm just so scared of messing up the sound and/or action but the tuning heads and bridge are beginning to age/wear/fail. (insert appropriate emoji here.)
I think your emojis, in order, are: 🥺🤯🤩! If it’s now at a point where it’s kind of annoying you and hindering playing I’d be brave and make a change. Guarantee even if/when it’s “different” in its result that it won’t be worse. You don’t sound like you’re changing because you’re just curious, sounds like a necessity. 🙌🏻

After watching your Zepplin videos every night for an year I bought a plain top honeyburst LP Classic on reverb. It's a lovely instrument but i'm not crazy about the PCB pots. I'm going to switch it to more traditional wiring and try some hum-sized p90s.

Do you reckon they knew each other? 🤘🏻😂
Great video. Very cleverly done. Very funny!!
Glad I got a laugh Jeff, thanks for watching!
the eating bit while on the phone 😆 great content. appreciate the work you've put into this video 👏
😂😂 true story! Shovelled that down and then went to watch Deadpool in the cinema!
Cheers Sped you covered it all💯 great insight into a beautiful guitar. Great video as always. Hope graph tech we’re watching 😁😁😁

Great stuff - I have two les Pauls- a page number one and a number two - the number two is my go to guitar so many tone options with the four push pulls and the two hidden buttons under the pick guard
Tell me everything about these hidden buttons.

Great Video Sped. I appreciate it. ...Hey can you do a lesson on "In The Evening ". I know I have asked over and over again....but could you?
Love the style of presentation. That’s Matt Berry and Noel Gallager in one with a twist of Karl Pilkinton, quite amusing.
😂😂😂😂 they’re all out today aren’t they. Love that.
I can’t believe how high your action is. I play like 💩 on high action. Don’t know how you make it sound so good.
Beautiful guitar. Do a video on your strat next please.
I guess I’ve just always had it like that. 🤷🏻♂️ The Strat video would be a lot shorter. Literally no mods. 😂
@@SpedSpedding your strat has great tone and sustain . I think that maple neck is the trick.
The HAT... Where did you get that amazing hat??? Please I've been looking for so long!
I appreciate these videos.
Glad you like them! This was a fun one to make. I’ve actually made more upgrades since this video. 😂😂
Great video Sped love how you can do 2 things at one time lol
What, tell crap jokes whilst sitting down? Me too. 😂😂
I have a Standard 1995 and its amazing too. One piece back with a two piece top on KILLER flamed honeyburst (or ice tea, i rlly dont know) finish. Loving your channel, cheers from Brazil.
Great breakdown sped
My pleasure DD!
Haha I've had no casualties yet. Maybe they've seated them in even more with them being hand relic.
I bought my new LP (black and cream....with humbucks ) in.....1976.
Had to pawn it for rent in the mid-eighties.
How much would it be worth today?
Don't know. Don't want to know.
The pain still remains.
Ouuuf, that’s tough. I wouldn’t want to guess. Too painful. Hope everything panned out for you though! 🙏🏻💷
@@SpedSpedding I bought an Epi LP same color about 3 years ago. ..for the same price I paid for my original in 76. $350
Hate to say it but...I like it better.
Oh wow, now that is some serious info right there. How on earth did you know that? And yeah, Gab makes everything better. 😂
oh dear....wow.....titanium zircon saw blades an all....😃
Ive got a late 90s les paul. Mines a 1996 R7 which I refinished in a burst. Hands down the late 90s quality is just amazing, not a fault on it.
Wow did you do the refinish yourself? 🤯
Okay…love your sense of humor…new sub here 🙋🏻
Welcome to the channel. You will be pleased to know that the humour continues video to video. 😂
Love the videos, just bought myself a vintage v100 but haven’t got the time to play 😫😫😫🤣🤣
I’ll help you make time! 😏
I didn't use my volume controls at all until I built myself a Trainwreck Express amp. Then the guitar volume knobs become absolutely essential. I rewired my 75 LP Standard to 50's style, fixing the treble rolloff.
Literally just swapped things around under the hood? That's smart. Every guitar the same after that tweak?
Awsome Richie Blackmore impression my friend
Great stuff, I have a 91 custom, love the upgrades you've done. Seriously thinking about some of them myself..... Been following you and your guitar for some time. Wonderful stuff, great sound, great playing, thank you :)
That’s real cool. What finish and what would you change first?
I use stringbutlers . They solved 80% of tuning issues. But i,m going to check out those tuners. Thanks for the info. Problem is which ones will fit my custom 2017..18??
@@SpedSpedding Hey, It's a deep cherry red.. almost black in most lights. Then it can glow insanely when the light hits it right. I'm gonna start with the graph tech bridge, saddle and tuners. Not really sure tbh, about the pickups yet, was thinking about the J Page wiring harness and go from there. Lots to think about and research. Keep up the great work :)
Hey Sped,
Awesome guitar. Are you using 9 guage hybrids?
Cheers
Toby
You got it Toby! Good spot.
I love it. 😂
Sorry to hear about your Kate suffering with pneumonia. Of course I’m glad to hear that I was helping her to laugh it all away. All the best to a speedy recovery.

I cool jazz my porridge and morning brew too! I’ll bring you all along next time. 🙏🏻😏
Scalloped feel? Now the Ritchie Blackmore hat makes sense : )
what model is your Les Paul sir?
it is indeed a very nice example.
Is it a 50s or 60s Les Paul Standard?
Interesting...my Les Paul was completed September 1, 2008. Only mods - 50s wiring of course, vintage-taper neck volume pot, Seth Lover PAFs, Tusq nut and medium-medium frets (about 1/4 less wide than yours). I put the same wire on my Strat- my fingers aren't very long....I seem to trip on jumbos. Make the guitar your own, and it will give you magic!
That's it isn't it, if you're happy/comfortable with all the upgrades you make and it inspired you to play then that's all that matters.
Great vid
What a fantastic video have a good weekend
Thank you so much Amin, you too!
Sped! You’re such an utter, unmitigated knob…I love you!
I am a knob. I agree. 😂
Awesome I just got my dream Gibson Les Paul Standard🙏
Congratulations what year and spec? 🎉
love the humour in this and the smooth jazz baking track tops it all off. I have the same finish on my LP and I love it. A Workingman's LP.
Working mans Les Paul, I like that a lot! Yeah, I am so done with everyone slapping the same fat rock track from Epidemic Sounds on every video. I love jazz music. I have it on every morning in the house.
@@SpedSpedding same with me always jazz on in the backgroud as I putter around the house. morning coffee and jazz rules.
What do you use on fretboard? Looks nice and dark. I have a 99 honeyburst 👍
Just a basic lemon oil. 🙏🏻
I don’t need to upgrade my guitar I need to upgrade my playing.
We can do both on this channel. 😏

@@SpedSpedding Shortly after posting this I had a band practice and the constant "drift" in tuning drove me nuts. I'm doing it! Stay "tuned" for the results to be posted somewhere (here) at a later date. (generic smiling emoji)
