  • In today's episode, I wanted to break down a few of the reasons I love my Gibson Les Paul so much, including the cool story of how I came to own it, and a few of the things I've changed on it along the way to make it the (almost) perfect guitar for my needs.
Again, sorry about the autofocus on this one, hopefully you can make it through and enjoy the episode anyway! I'll see you in focus on the next one... :-)

Thanks for the story. My grandmother passed away in '92, when I was 15, and she left me the money to buy, specifically, a Les Paul. I also was really into Page and Slash, so she knew that would be my choice. I played every Les Paul in town, and ironically, the best playing and sounding was a Studio. Almost 30 years later now, and I still play that guitar every day.

Jimmy Page and Duane Allman are my guitar idols. Why I play a les paul. I just love all of the tonal ranges I can get out of it. Especially just from playing with the volume and tone knobs (50s wiring). I love the clean tones and it screams with over drive. It just feels like a monster and looks so so so cool. It's a work of art the way it's made. It's the coolest guitar i've ever seen and I get so much enjoyment out of playing mine.

Great video, Jack. Love that guitar. I agree with you on the LP being the most versatile guitars on the market. I have a 94 standard in tobacco burst. It belonged to my brother who passed away in 99. I recently swapped out the pickups for a set of Duncan antiquities and put a vintage style harness with bumblebee caps in. It’s absolutely rocking. Keep up the good work, dude 🤟

Jack your story really resonated with me. When I was 18 my grandfather bought me a Fender Classic Player 60's Strat (widely considered some of the best guitars to ever come out Fender Mexico, and has custom shop 69 pickups) in almost that exact same finish as your Les Paul there, but with an off-white "mint green pickguard". A few years later my grandfather passed away, so I always think of him whenever I play that strat.

Nice story: thanks for sharing Jack ! It took no less than 48 years to find mine. An R9, all stock with CustomBuckers. I used to have a '69 LP that I had fitted with Bill Lawrence double bladed pickups and a phase inverter. It was my main guitar for years, but it was (very) heavy and the neck carve wasn't that comfortable. With my actual R9, everything is perfect. It has the honk, the growl, the clarity and screaming tones one would expect from a LP. It is made of solid mahogany but still light, and the neck carve fits to my hand as if it was made to measure. Plus it has the nicest flame I've ever seen on a LP top. Love it and shall keep it until my grandson inherits it ;-) Good choice these 10-48 strings. Gives a very good balance in feel and tone. If I can advise you, keep those Klusons. I had swapped them for Grovers on my previous one and regretted it afterwards but couldn't turn back: the holes in the headstock had been enlarged. For the record (and little story) I bought my R9 from the gentleman who supplied Kirk Hammett with Greenie (discovered it later ;-) Keep those vids coming Jack: great playing ! Cheers

Sorry for disjointed post but om writing this on my phone RUclips app whilst watching your vid on TV ..
Love LP story and your parents. I too had incredibly supportive parents ...I remember my dad borrowing £60 of hid brother when I was only 14 to buy me a second hand AC30 that I then used for at least 4/5 years because he was a miner not earning much and it was for my first local gig not first gig in my village of Measham.
My Les Paul is a 1983 std tobacco sunburst ... the ones they fitted Bill Lawrence pickups to for a short time ..it was loaned to me for a session back in the late 90s... and my friend Kenny Pickering who was suffering from MS had three Les Pauls ... i picked this one .it has the original pickups in the case. But had replacement ones in do not know what they were , but I put the originals back in .
Kenny let me keep it to use and a few years later I asked him how much I could buy it of him and he said to me ..." I will never take any money off you for that Guitar !!! And he would not be moved on that ...
    Amazing.....
I tried a set of JB Seymour's on it a few years ago but the Bill Lawrence ones just sounded so much better
    Apologies long story..
Also I wired it out of phase in the middle
    Love it

I have a 2011 R8 vos in iced tea. Stays in tune perfectly with a huge neck. Pick ups are burstbuckers I believe. Great guitars and one of the few I've ever gotten on with. My pick ups are quite low output which I actually prefer. Loads of dynamic range. This period of R8's defo worth hunting down for those not totally sure about les Paul's.

I own since new 2013 Epiphone les paul 1960 outfit which came with switcraft switch and gibson 57 classic PUs. I did upgrade the bridge and stoptail to Gotoh and bone nut. Great ugprades!! but when I put in SD skinnerburst Bonamassa PUs and proper 50s wiring (Acys guitars) guitar rocks like a hell! Sounds so warm and vintage and sustains for ages! Even clean sounds are amazing for jazz stuff! Rock on, guys!!

That story about the Australian guy that bought that guitar is really funny. Great story! Wonderful parents. I still remember when my older brother was 16 and asked for his most desired amp: a Fender The Twin red knobs (very famous in the eighties). He was very good at school so my parents decided to purchase that big and superheavy amp. Our parents got us in the car and we made hundreds of kilometres through Italy to reach one of the most famous guitar shop in Italy back then (Emporio musicale senese in Siena, Tuscany) and buy that beast. I was... still wasn't a teen, just a kid and had never seen so many guitars and amps before. I was SO impressed... the colours I watched, the sounds I heard, the smell, the brands...
Well, thanks too to that first parental input, both him and I are now guitars and amps collectors and players. Music is one of the best way to enjoy our own life.

Man! That’s exactly what my dad did to me for Christmas! When I was 16 I only had cheap beginner guitars but was finally going to get and much better, step up, an Epiphone Les Paul. We went to Sam Ash to go get it but it wasn’t there and I assumed it sold and I left empty handed and bummed out. But Christmas morning it was right there in front of my eyes. He had bought it and tricked me haha. Only difference in my story is the Epiphone head stock broke a couple years later and now 10 years after getting that Epiphone, I was able to purchase a 1969 Gibson Les Paul. An absolute dream guitar. I’ll never need another Les Paul again. If I lost that guitar, I don’t think I’d even want another Les Paul. Cheers!

Jimmy Page is (by far) my favorite rock guitar player and I can't recall anyone who channels the spirit of his playing - touch, tone, nuance, aggression - as artfully as you do...Mr Page can be very proud to have inspired someone as phenomenal as yourself to carry his legacy into the 21st century...You're amazing...
A funny LP story...A few years back I was recording some of my songs with a band I hired and the lead guitar player asked me to bring my LP to the session, where he used it and duly tore things up on one particular tune we were doing...2 days later we were going back in to record again and I called him up to ask him if he needed me to bring the LP and he said "No, that's cool, Ill bring mine - I just bought one yesterday".

You remind me of me when I was younger. ;) My LP story is parents bought me a Hohner LP copy for xmas one year (14 yrs old), worked as a janitor after school 3 hours a day ($4.25/hr), saved enough for a new '79 LP custom (silverburst, $620 out the door), rode it home on my bike. That was my everything guitar. Currently have a 2004 standard (50's fatter neck) bought new, played a ton, refret with stainless (don't do that) and now has throbak pickups in it. Got a new LP custom a couple years ago. Nothing else really sounds like a LP. If I have "tips", I'd say try dialing in the amp with the bridge tone control on say 5, and then the extra brightness when you switch to the neck is really helpful in making the guitar sound good across both pickups. You'll probably find you lose some volume on the bridge pickup and compensate for that by lowering the neck pickup. You can also make the neck pickup a little brighter by unscrewing the pole pieces a little. Milage will vary depending on pickups and wiring, but it can really help balance the tonality of the guitar overall and make the whole thing more useable in general. Nice vid, nice playing, and nice tone.

Great story. Thanks for sharing. I bought my 1st LP by mail order from a Music Store in Philadelphia Pennsylvania (a new Gibson Black Beauty Custom) over 40 years ago when I was in my senior year at a Texas University. I bought mine with money I made at an after-school job. The frets were the "fretless wonder" type that did not work for rock music. Ended up selling it five years later.

I recently bought a squire 50’s classic vibe Strat, and what blew me away was How natural theStrat felt in my hands, it was instantaneous the second I picked it up. I had a similar experience when I was the same age. Albeit my budget was vastly reduced and I had to sell my Flying V to get half way to the price of the Epiphone Les Paul I had my eye on. Me and my Dad went round Edinburgh and I played every one until I found the one. I still have it. I hope one day I can have a real one, but for now this one is fine and it’s served me well for 15 years. Yours is a beauty tho, I’d defo go for the Tobacco burst.

First time I have seen any of your videos. First, I must say, your R8 looks fantastic, no wait, better than that, just out of this world gorgeous! I didn't know they came in tobacco burst, but I may have just not been paying attention. Your tone and playing ability are just great. I wish you lived closer because I'd love to take a few brush up lessons from you. I don't know what handle they have for me, but my actual name is Lonnie. I live in North Carolina USA. I am quite an old dude and my birthday is a month away (Jan 8th, same as Elvis and David Bowie). I will be 67 and have been playing since I was 10. I have done a lot of work to the Les Pauls I have owned. Not much on fret work or truss rod adjust (mainly due to laziness and lack of patience). I had my left shoulder replaced earlier this year and I got bit by a rattlesnake three years ago. The shoulder is ok, but my left index finger has lost a bit of feeling. I'm pretty much self taught so, watching you play is a real treat! I'm thinking of saving a few of your licks to learn and get back in shape. I don't have a whole bunch of time left so it would be real fun to jam with a few fellows before time runs out. Thanks for the inspiration Jack. Stay safe my friend. I just might be on the hunt for a used R8 with that tobacco burst finish. Oh and BTW, have you heard/seen those Cream-T pickups? Very pricy to me, but maybe worth the bucks. Later my friend!

It took me 20 years to get mine. I've owned it for about 1 1/2 years. It's a cherry burst. It has a lot of range sound wise, and it's the nicest thing I've ever owned. I don't play the other guitars I have anymore because my LP is so much better. Im probably going to sell the other guitars. Every day, when I get it from it's case, I have the feeling that I cannot believe that I own it. I worry about it a lot because I love it so much lol. I am getting better at an incredible rate because the guitar excites me so much. All of this is part of owning one for me. It's a different experience than any other guitar for me. Mine is a Traditional from when those were more like what a standard should be. Its basically what a 50's standard is now with smaller frets. I absolutely love it. My advice would be that if you want that sound, just save up and buy a real one. Trying to get the sound elsewhere leads to heartache. Nothing else is like the real thing.. That is my experience and opinions on it anyway. I hope that all of you get your dream guitar. Even if it's not a LP. Great video!

  • @pascal006

Totally agree! To me, the perfect Les Paul sound is bright and clear, Tele-Ish but fatter. I usually put a lower output neck pickup to tame the low end a bit and have a nicer clean sound. With the right OD, the neck pickup can even sound straty if you manage to control the mids on the amp! Very versatile when you understand how to play with the tone and volume controls. And its middle position is unique and offers a lot on tonal possibilities!

Les Pauls more than any other guitar seem to be particular about pickups to turn them from good to great. My first custom shop Gibson was an art & historic 2000 R8 in black top/natural back (the Sam Ash limited run). It was my main player for at least a decade and I love it. It's been through probably 8 sets of pickups before I found the ones that highlighted what I wanted and removed potential pitfalls in the tone. To me the hardest thing to get right is the neck pickup on a LP and if you achieve clarity there you've got a keeper. The set that did it for me is Rewind Electric low wind A2's. Long live the R8!

I had a sunburst Les Paul copy, an Arbiter, when I was aged around 16. It was actually very good, so much so that my dad couldn’t understand why I would want a Gibson Les Paul. Still, aged 18, my dad acted as guarantor for a wine red Gibson Les Paul Deluxe. (l repaid the loan in just nine months.) A couple of years later I bought a natural, three-pickup Les Paul Custom with gold-plated pickups). I foolishly sold the Gibsons (including a 62 335) and have regretted it ever since. I’ve owned a lot of cool guitars over the years, but I currently don’t own a Les Paul. I just wish I’d hung onto at least one of those that I owned as a teenager.

I have to LP's. a 1986 prehistoric reissue nice and light crazy flame top, cost nearly 7 grand but worth it. The Shaws to me get the top end you need and the air around the notes with the hollow woody sound. The other is a Tokai LS-200 from 1985, also nice and light and with Arcane pickups nails early 72 Page tone. I've had maybe 26-27 custom shops and settled on these two.

Jack. Very cool story as we all have them . We all loved MR. Paul & for myself it was Duane Allman & Terry Kath that i saw in the late 60s & in 1970 that hooked me on these guitars. I was to young to buy one then but once hooked I knew i had to have one. Fooled around for years before i saw these guys & finally took lessons for 5 years . While taking them my teacher had several LPs & other guitars & eventually sold me one of his which I still have & like yours it will never leave my life. It's a 72 Black Custom & other than a few switch changes over the years it's totally stock. Yours is mighty fine & you play very well. As a lover or these fine guitars i would like to share a bit of music & a shot of mine. If you have time give a listen & a look . You can leave a comment if you wish, that's always nice to see. I couldn’t agree more. I’m not sure after owning more than 15 Gibson Les Paul’s and never owning a custom shop what the magic is? I lived right down the road from Gibson for 14 yrs and relocated up north. A few years later I was invited for a factory tour of all the Nashville facilities. Great experience. However my questions are as follows...I have a 2000 Gibson Les Paul Studio, 2004 Gibson Les Paul Classic 1960 and a 2018 Gibson Les Paul Traditional. My Studio and Classic sustains the most great mid punch and my Traditional does not. I even put 498t and 490r in my Traditional but can’t get the tone or sustain. Is it the bridge hardware material, potentiometers or wiring? Thank for the great video Jack! Good story too!

I have four Les Pauls. A 1973 Les Paul Custom, 1994 Goldtop Classic, 2000 Black Standard, and a 2011 Junior. All stock, nothing changed.....well except the 73. The only thing stock on it is the neck and body haha. I love Les Pauls. So versitle. So many cool sounds. I wanted one cause of Slash, Doug Aldrich and Jimmy Page. Plug them all into some sort of marshall....and yes please.

You just inspired me to play my Les Paul. It’s a 1991 1960 Classic. I love that guitar and it’s definitely my #1. I changed the pickups and tuners. I haven’t played another Les Paul that plays better.

I have a Vintage LP tabacco burst (relic) V100 2009 at the time needed a workhorse for gigs at first never really gave the respect this guitar deserved being a budget guitar just wanted it to do a job and that's it. Every time l play this LP just blooms sounds great all stock... love it!☺. Don't think l have heard an LP like yours for a long time.. just sounds immense those Stormy Monday pick ups really make that guitar and of course your exquisite playing!😉

Being a lefty the choice of Custom Les Pauls is more limited than for righties. Luckily Peach stock lefty Gibson Custom Les Pauls so I was able to try 3 different guitars. While they were all great I was able to find my special one (a 60th anniversary 1959). I have kept it stock except for removing some of the stickiness on the back of the neck which I find a lot of the new Custom Gibsons have. D’addario NYXL 10-46
are my preferred stings (although I also like a German brand called Pyramid).

Nicely done! I just stumbled onto your site. My favorite is my LP Traditional, Ice Tea, “The Bear”. It’s beefy and it growls. Thought about grabbing the Bare Knuckles but I went with Wolftone Dr. Vintage and Marshalhead, found some good pots/caps and re-wired it 1950’s style. But it’s the amp that I spent the most time with....I modified a Fender tweed Blues Deluxe. Anyway, good job.

Cool story. That guitar sounds good. I also watched your playing very carefully in the opening section and I plan to steal much of that if I can figure out how to play it. (Advanced beginner here.). The only thing I’ve done to my Epiphone LP Classic, which I bought 2nd hand, is a fairly good setup (no fret buzzing now).

Jack can you share where you got the electronics with the push pull pot and did you have to turn the magnet around on the neck pick up to get the out of phase, thanks Mate, awesome video as always

Hey Rich, I had a guitar tech just install the pot for me and use it to reverse the phase electronically using the pickup cabling. No reversal of the magnet required!

Just found your channel Jack , hope you’re well . Fond memories of seeing you in GG in Epsom and hearing you play there ! Great guitar and recently I’ve reverted back to Les Paul’s ( which I started out on with an SG in 75 ! ) as opposed to mainly Strats . I love both but am enjoying the rounder fatter tones from my Les Paul . Take care and keep up the amazing playing and videos. Good luck and merry Xmas , rock on Gary x

Glad so many people love your channel , you’re really helping the guitar community . Am considering doing something similar to you now that I’ve given up eaching one to one after 25 years . Can I ask what are recording the sound on for your vids ? Cheers All the best ! Gary ...ps the Les Paul is singing !

God forbid your house should ever be on fire, but Jack you're wrong. If in that perilous moment you had to choose only one of your guitars, you would actually grab the 335. ;-)

I agree the les paul is the Swiss Army knife of guitars BUT……I owned an Eastman LP59 sunburst and boy was it good I’d say as good as an R9 for a fraction of the money.

Tasty playing Jack! On the cheaper side of Les Paul I'm going with a Special (slab mahogany - no maple cap) with Burstbucker 2&3 pickups with the Nashville tuneomatic

  • @GuyNarnarian

I had the same idea when I got my first electric guitar - a 96' Korean made Epiphone Les Paul. I replaced the plastic style tuners - I could never keep that thing in tune with those, and put some Pings on there. Stays in tune great now. I've tried all types of string gauges, tunings, nothing ever goes wrong with it. Finally I replaced the switch after 25 years. I have more expensive guitars but it always feels like coming home when I play that one. I really like having a trem system so for that its not great (thinking of maybe getting a Wolfgang Special to get the best of both worlds, no pun intended). I love my strat but I think the 24.75" scale length is a little easier to play. Or it could just be the guitar. I've tried plenty of Gibsons and I would put mine up against many of them when it comes to tone and playability. One friend of mine got a black Gibson Les Paul Studio or something, I thought my Epiphone played much better, like not even close. But that was years ago. I haven't tried wrapping the strings around the bridge, might do that.
