• CURT SMITH: "'MAD WORLD' was easy for me to sing because I could relate to ROLAND's lyrics. We were both the middle of three sons and had been brought up by single mothers with absent fathers." • ROLAND ORZABAL: "I'm proud of the younger ROLAND. Very proud of some of the lyrics. They stand up today. I'm cool with it, though some of it is a bit painful...A song about post-teenage angst like 'MAD WORLD' seems to be permanently relevant." • Inspired by the ideas of ARTHUR JANOV's primal therapy, the lyrics explore the intricacies of adolescence. One particularly striking line, "The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had," suggests that the best way to relieve tension is through dreams about traumatic events like death. "MAD WORLD" not only cemented TEARS FOR FEARS' place in the new wave movement, but it also had a long-lasting impact, regaining popularity decades later through countless covers and film appearances.
yes but this clip is from the program 'Britannia at the BBC0 wich collected performances from the original 'Oxford Road Show', you can see the graphics from the recent program and not the original.
Now that we know singers sometimes get tired after tours or get ill and their voices are not the same - we tend not to make such silly statements about singers who have shifted millions of copies of sings way before computers could perfect voices for our plebeian ears.
Material never seen in America Hispanic due to one reason: BBC was exclusive for news for local broadcasters, some contents like "I, Claudius" was aired only in a local channel, as I never see this show aired in my country, another shows from BBC like "Monty Python's Flying Circus" neither was aired in my country. Why? The local broadcasters prefers contents from USA, simply.
Is this actually live, or just a different recording than on the album? I thought their TV performances were always mimed. Cool to see Curt playing bass here, I remember reading that they switched to a recorded bass part for Mad World pretty early on because he didn't like having to carry the guitar throughout when he only plays for a very short section of the song.

Never saw this video. Thanks for sharing this ✨
Curts voice changes around the 1:48 mark. like all of a sudden he shifted up a gear. but this version almost sounds timid and muted for some reason
Thanks for uploading, didn't know this was from that early in the 1980's. FYI: Tears for Fears are performing this year all across the USA.
Yes, Mad World was released as a single in 1982 and then released in The Hurting album in 1983.
So glad I fond this gem

Slightly different from the original but i like it, especially the guitar
Which did you think was the original? The Tears for Fears studio version?
This is the original. They wrote the song. Everyone else covered it
Cool 😎

He’s such a better singer now.
yea but to be fair, singing live back then is way more difficult than singing live now.
