- G'day guys, today we are reacting to Harry Chapin for the first time with A Better Place To Be. I loved the story telling in this song, it was both heartbreaking and heartwarming.

Perhaps the greatest singer/songwriter of all time. RIP Harry
Oh, you're in for some real treats with Harry Chapin - Cats in the Cradle, Taxi, Mr. Tanner - enjoy!
I saw Harry four times. He used to have donation boxes at his concerts for fans to leave canned foods for the hungry. Half of his concerts were for charity. He got the Presidential Gold Medal for his humanitarian efforts. He was a founding member of the Council for World Hunger. He inspired the big benefit concerts of the 80s and 90s. He was nominated for an Academy Award for a film he made. And he died in a car accident at the age of 38. Quite a life.
His Harry Chapin food banks are still around today. He was a genius singer/songwriter.
Harry Chapin is a master storyteller. There is a song called Mr. Tanner that you may enjoy. His biggest hit was Taxi.
Cats in the Cradle was his only number 1 song so i think that would definitely make it his biggest hit.
The best song by Harry. Definitely my favorite. Pure genius.
My favorite singer-songwriter for the last 40 years. This song was one of Harry's personal favorites (and one of mine as well). I've seen some of the other suggestions below, but I think one you should listen to as a story is Story of a Life. It actually is a somewhat tweaked story that tells of his life. The conclusion the song comes to was definitely true about Harry.
This is my favorite song of all time and I actually have the lyric "i wish that I was beautiful or that you were halfway blind" tattooed on my forearm
It’s pronounced CHAY-PIN. My hubby is a German immigrant. (We met in 1981). Hubby came to the US originally as an exchange student (for universities). He and his host family headed to a concert (1975) of a singer they didn’t know very well. It was Harry Chapin. He did the whole set, involving the audience along with the band. Chapin stayed after the concert, playing encore after encore. He was a genuine American success story. Tragically, Chapin was killed in a terrible car accident in 1981. His storytelling and singing were unparalleled. I still miss him. Everyone says “Cat’s In The Cradle” is one you should listen to. Absolutely. I also suggest “30,000 pounds of bananas”. True story. It happened close to us, in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
I love Harry Chaplin. Thanks for giving him a listen. As others have said, he was a true humanitarian. And a great story teller.
Mr Tanner is a fave of mine! Harry Chapin was wonderful!
You probably know Harry Chapin the same way you know Bob Seger. You're probably aware of his songs but didn't know he was the artist. He didn't get a lot of radio air time because of the length of his songs. It takes time to tell a good story and radio didn't have time for him. He is one of the greatest of the musical storytellers and is worth taking the time to listen to. I recommend one my favorites W-O-L-D. Thanks for the reaction
You say wrong please explain.how so,?
Another good story song of his is "WOLD."
This is one of my all-time favorite albums. He was one of the greats.
Listen to how Harry met his wife, “I Wanna Learn A Love Song” this is off the Greatest Stories Live album.
30,000 lbs of bananas
Taxi (then listen to Sequel, though it’s not on this album.)
W.O.L.D.
Circle
Mr Tanner
If you’re emotional, don’t listen to, The Shortest Story, it’ll rip your heart out. Harry told true stories, Taxi, Sequel, and I wanna learn a love song, are great examples.
Another great is Mail order Annie.
My late mother's favourite Harry Chapin song. The bridge section, is incredibly emotive.
Mr. Tanner, Taxi, Cat's In The Cradle, Story Of a Life are all damn fine stories. After you get through with them, you'll be ready for Sniper.
What about Bummer? Just as deep as Sniper.
He wrote such beautiful stories. Two other favorites of mine ... Cat's In The Cradle and Mr. Tanner. They will give you chills. (Love the cellos!)
My favorite musical artist of all time, I listen to everything and he's always been on too for me.
There are so many amazing songs from him I could list so many but here are just a couple.
Bummer- Harry Chapin
Dance band on the titanic- Harry Chapin
I wonder what would happen- Harry Chapin
I don't think I've heard "Bummer", thanks! Some of my other many favorites of his: "Years Go By", "Tangled Up Puppet", "Dancin' Boy", "Stranger With The Melodies", "Corey's Coming". I wish I could have seen him in concert.
Thank you very much for bringing Harry back to life. If only for a little while.
Harry Chapin is an incredible storyteller. He is good at making people cry. He died too young. Car accident. Darn it! He makes me cry EVERY TIME! I wish he had gotten more attention. I think Cat's in the Cradle and Taxi are two that are still played today.
Harry Chapin also wrote the songs "Taxi" and "Cats In The Cradle" and "Mr. Tanner" along with a total of at least 3 Albums.
I have loved this man since the 1970's.........................magical story teller ...................I cried at work when I heard on the radio that he died - no one else knew who this wordsmith was. A great album, to get is the one you are showing "Greatest Stories Live" or "Verities and Balderdash" then get all the others because you have to. I'm an Aussie and it seems that there weren't too many of us fans at the time because as Harry himself said, his stuff was too long for radio - wasn't until 'Cat's in the Cradle' and 'Taxi' that he got some attention here.
Harry breaks your heart and then 💔 😢 he fixes it. A master story Teller to be sure 👌 🙌 👏.
I love Harry Chapin. I'm 46 and my parents used to listen to him all the time and I love all the songs. Live is best not studio versions.
You said you liked the way it came full circle. There happens to be a song of his called Circle. It's a good one. kind of a feel good song. Take care
I would recommend if you are going to do more Chapin reactions, flowers are red, I want to learn a love song, Mr Tanner
Must listen to W.O.L.D. By Harry Chapin, Mr. Tanner
Would love to hear you react to Harry Chapin - “Taxi” and “Sequel”(Taxi 2) You will really enjoy. Also “ Mr. Tanner”
This is he greatest album!
This song is my favorite by Harry. Other songs to review are, the rock, mail order Annie and Sunday morning sunshine
I have always found Harry’s lyricism to be amazing. “She left a six word letter..”, in other songs “then he lost his head. Not to mention an arm or two..”, “reality poured from her face staining the floor”. He most definitely had a way with words. His stories and many of his values influenced my life. He would do at least half his concerts each year for charity.
Thanks for this. Harry Chapin is my favorite even though he passed away when I was only 4 years old. My dad used to play his stuff every weekend when I was young and I reacted like a jerk kid. But as I got into my teens, I started to actually listen... and I realized how damn good the songs are. I hope you react to more Chapin music. He was the best singer songwriter!
I know you through VoicePlay but Harry has been a major part of my music influences since college (many years ago). Both are so special! Thank you for this reaction.
Loved your reaction. That cello - long lines, pizzicato and tremolo techniques really help set the mood.
My mom brought me to Harry concerts. His story songs are so great. Look up Taxi, the rock, dance band on the titanic, the bummer is upsetting.
In the way back I used to do a solo acoustic act. This song always got a good response.
I was born and raised in Watertown, NY. I've always loved Harry. I consider him my favorite performer, my favorite singer, my favorite poet and my favorite storyteller. Watertown was pretty boring back when he visited our town. I feel honored that his favorite song from his career came from his visit. I posted this song on a local Watertown page and discussion broke out about what bar he was talking about. Many knew....and many knew who the barmaid was. Thanks for your reaction. Harry certainly can pull emotion out from the depths of your heart. Take care and be well. Peace.
Interesting story. Your comment is a year old and find it unusual that no one inquired of additional info on the waitress. Is she still remembered and does she acknowledge her part in the story?
@@christinetarquin3773 ...I went back and read through the post that I had made on the local Watertown page.
The first response the thread got was this: "The bar was The Chimes on Franklin St. Erma was the waitress/cook at that time."
The second response was this: "When Harry Chapin's brother Tom was going to college in Northern New York, Harry was the one who would transport his brother back and forth to school. One of their stops along the way was a little bar here in Watertown, called the Chimes. I don't think that the events in the story actually happened, but the little man and the big old friendly gal who tended bar were both real people, cause I knew both of them. The barmaid, whose name was Erma, had pictures of all the regulars taped up across the back bar, including the college kids who made the Chimes our regular hangout, as well as the ones who had gone off to Vietnam, or to the big city, plus pictures of all the new brides and babies as we acquired them. Erma passed away suddenly in 1972, just days before a bunch of Chimes alumni planned to drop in and surprise her.
God bless you, Erma. I miss you."
Chapin was a terrific storyteller. Everyone will tell you to play 'Taxi' or 'Cats in the Cradle' and they're great songs too. But I'd like to hear 'Greyhound'. I think that was his best.
The man can paint pictures with words.
An amazing storyteller.
We lost one of the best in Harry Chapin. He spearheaded many, huge organizations and benefits to relieve and eliminate hunger. A Master Storyteller. Lots of great songs and stories to react to, and know you've heard many: Cats in the Cradle, ruclips.net/video/etundhQa724/видео.html, and WOLD, Taxi, Dreams Go By, 30,000 lbs of Bananas (live), Story of a Life, so many more.. Miss the Guy!
Harry Chapin was the greatest story teller, ever! Unfortunately, I never got to see him live. I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
THE master story teller.
I had this album on 8 track and would fall asleep listening to it for probably a month.
Best story teller!!! Gone to soon!
Thank you for being one of the few reactors to give this great storyteller an audience. This might be the greatest love song of the era. A rec9mmendation or two: "Cat's In The Cradle" and "Bummer". Sad stories, well told.
Loved your reaction. Two more favorites of mine are “Taxi” and “WOLD”. Would love to see you react to one or both of these. He was a great storyteller who died too young.
I think the most important line in the song is when the girl says "shhhh... I know just how you feel". It is then that you realize that she looks at someone the same way that the man looks at her... which is the same way the waitress looks at him. People often have love right in front of them, but they are to busy chasing a fantasy to see it.
If you do wind up delving into Harry, another very good song I haven't seen mentioned here is "Shee is Always 17".
my first concert was a harry Chapin benefit show in Memphis - just him and his guitar (no band). It was sooo damn good. And then he stood by the exit and introduced himself to everyone as they left -shook my hand and said “hi, I’m harry, what’s your name?"- such a nice, genuine guy (like we didn’t know his name :) )
That's awesome! I'm from Macon, Ga and he was supposed to play there but was sick and couldn't come. So he rescheduled, came back by himself, and played a 3 hour acoustic show to make up for it. It was phenomenal. We were both lucky to have seen him.
If this song doesn't make you cry you don't have a soul.
Wonderful song!
I know its a thing about getting patrons to suggest songs. So many of you and its not in the budget. That said I had everything Harry ever released. Many of his stories are very sad but contain a message. To my thinking most are sometimes it best not to get your dreams. As in they are almost always better as dreams. Nobody has reviewed A Better Place to Be. One of his better stories but not his most well known. I suggest three songs. One I believe is here on this album. Its about how he met his wife Sandy. I Wanna Learn a Love Song. Another I believe is on On The Road To Kingdom Come and is called Corey's Coming. Lastly From The Dance Band On The Titanic is Called Paint A Picture of Yourself (Michael). These I recommend. There are many others worth it.
My favorite performer...... happy you enjoyed it and hope you listened to that whole record as it is probably one of his best.
I grew up listening to Harry Chapin as my dad listened to him. Such a great story teller and such a great song I loved this album
My suggestion for Harry Chapin is "The Mayor of Candor Lied".
This is my favorite song by Harry closely followed by Corey's Coming.
My favorite as well. So many layers to that story, I would love your reaction.
I love that song! I think for people starting with Harry some of his more commercial stuff is good then they are hooked.
It is heartbreaking... it’s genuine art.
This is the best song EVER.
All of his songs are stories. I suggest Mr. Tanner, Taxi, Cats in the Cradle
The greatest story teller and humanitarian ever I recommend Cory’s Coming
Here are my suggestions. Watch, and especially "listen" , to ALL of the Harry Chapin songlists! Art and genius, humanity and compassion in every one! (While never denying/hating the dark, Harry excepted it, and still faced the Light, while also living in the Dark. Also, just for poops and giggles, and joy,, please also check out Blood, Sweat, and Tears, literally almost everything they did! One of the greatest, yet most under rated bands of all time!
One great song. The fat waitress longs for love. This song brings tears to my eyes each time I hear it.
I am a huge Harry fan. I have the lyrics from this song tattooed on my forearm " I wish that I was beautiful or that you are halfway blind"
Check out "I wonder what would happen to this world."
That's one of my favorites of Harry Chapin. You should listen to more if you enjoyed that one!
A great story well told on all levels
Harry’s song, Sniper, will shock you to your core. It’s the story inside the mind of a mass murderer.
Mr Tanner and Mail Order Annie are brilliant stories as well.
30,000 pounds of Bananas is another true story he put into a song.
Ps. Love your reaction when you realise near the end it's going full circle
Man you have to do "Mr Tanner" and "Taxi". They don't get any better than that.
I'm assuming you watched more of his videos... Harry is amazing!
Harry Chapin is known to be one of the greatest singer songwriters ever....your analysis...that was kinda good....lol.
A song about circumstance, loneliness and choices
Someone has to do Mr. Tanner by Harry Chapin. Has to!
Listen/"react" to more of Harry Chapin! I don't care how or when. LITERARY, some of the best stories/songs of the last 60 yrs!
You'll get a lot of suggestions for Taxi and Cats in the Cradle, and they're both great songs, but listen to 'Take The Greyhound'. My personal favorite.
Thanks for listening, I think you do a great job on the channel
You have probably heard "Cat's in the Cradle" before, but you won't be disappointed going down the Harry Chapin rabbit hole. I would suggest his live albums over the studio ones. "Greatest Stories Live" and the double live album "Legends of the Lost and Found" are his best
This is another of my favourites called "Strange with his melodies" ruclips.net/video/WFWkpK1X-Cg/видео.html
I’m glad you found this version. Greatest stories live. Here is a link to the playlist ruclips.net/p/PLBFAB4B79149E8C9F these versions are by far his best work. It was performed live and he had matured as an artist by then. The titles “Mr. Tanner” and “I Wanna Learn A Love Song” are some truly great stories. And the Shortest Story could probably break enough hearts to solve world hunger. I am a fan of your channel and would love to see your reactions to these. IF YOU LOVE STORIES THIS IS IT
Check out What Made America Famous, fantastic song.
Me tanner or taxi are also great songs by Chapin
Harry Chapin was a masterful storyteller (not to mention an extraordinary human being).

Taxi and Cats in the Cradle were his most popular songs, but I have a hard time choosing between Mr. Tanner, Better Place to Be, and Mail Order Annie as my favorite.
From the era of "storytellers".
A talent that is sorely missed today.
The studio version is much better.
This had a real Billy Joel sound.
I believe Harry predates Billy but I love 'em both! Italian Restaraunt has about the greatest piano solo I have ever heard!
Cat,s an the cradle
I prefer the studio take. The outro is a real tear jerker. Amazing story nonetheless.
Harry was great. Unfortunately he died in a car accident while going to a charity concert 😕 😞 😢. In 1976 or 7.
You need to do TAXI and Mr. Tanner
✌🏻❤🎶
same time frame as Neil Diamond contemporaries......I have the album on your screen.....i have most of his music.....look him up on youtube.......welcome to Harry Chapin, there are also some videos of him singing live.
Chay-pin.
You must hear Harry's 30,000 pounds of bananas .
I grew up listening to this album.
Just pick any song from this album for your next reaction.
Harry no one will ever come close
ya gotta 30000 of bananas
Seeing that you are looking at golden oldies, I was just watching videos of people reacting to The Righteous Brothers, especially "You're my Soul and my Hearts inspiration " (long title right? ) at ruclips.net/video/qpwqSQKfm-E/видео.html . If you are not familiar with this duo you might do a reaction on this one. Interestingly, one of the reaction videos was on reaction videos. It was black reactions to the Righteous Brothers "You've lost that lovin' feeling" which all the reactors thought was being performed by a black group, not two white guys.
Try his song The rock
You should check out 'Taxi' ruclips.net/video/545Rlj1hITo/видео.html
and if you do, you have to do 'Sequel' ruclips.net/video/545Rlj1hITo/видео.html
(to complete the story!)
Thanks man. Stay safe and keep up the great work
Anothe good one is Mail Order Annie
I myself have been to Watertown NY and I must say that Harry is not exaggerating about it being a somewhat boring little burg. 😴
Try Harry CHAPIN
If you love a funny story.. try 30,000 pounds of bananas 😎
His brother Tom Chapin was playing the cello.
