On this live version of Mr. Tanner, "Big John" Wallace played bass and sang background vocals, as he did for Harry's entire career, and Mike Masters was on the cello.

Your reactions to Harry's songs are DEAD ON, I am beside myself with a huge grin plastered on my face while listening to these reactions! I've been listening to Chapin story songs since I was kid in the 90s and Harry was long since gone at that point. His music has touched me for my entire life.
It is so great to see another generation appreciating his words and music. By the way, there is a brand new documentary that just premiered this past Friday 10/16/20 called "When In Doubt, Do Something" about the life of Harry Chapin. It will be on Amazon Prime and DVD in November. I sincerely hope you can check it out. Harry is my hero and his work really deserves to live on.
And special kudos for doing live versions. Harry could really electrify an audience like no one I have ever seen. Rock on buddy!
I saw Harry in concert....it was an experience unlike any other...Harry was a character whose explanation of his songs and why he wrote them added weight and a bit of awe as to how could any man put together a lyric from the scraps of memories he held on to......try listening to “The Rock” a brilliant song.....I was upset when Harry died....he always did one concert to feed the hungry in the world and one concert to feed his family.....he was an unbelievable humanitarian.....I’m sure he’s in heaven.....

For some reason listening to it again, and watching it young man’s reactions as the story unfolded, has weeping the same way I did the first time I heard him sing it.
Harry Chapin was the master of bittersweet - some were more bitter (Mr. Tanner) and some were more sweet (Corey's Coming or I Want to Learn a Love Song). I would also love for you to react to "Mail Order Annie." It tells the story of the 70's precursor to online dating - the 1870's. I once sang it to my date from an online service on our first date - her middle name was Annie and my middle name is Harry - and she is now my wife.
The chorus to this song has meant so much to me (a singer from childhood and a guitar player for the last 55 years) that I put the words in my email account so every email I sent was "signed" with those words, ending "it just made him whole." I finally stopped doing that when I got a new email account, but I did do it for about 5 or 6 years.
This is my favorite song by Harry....despite the beauty of Taxi, A Better Place to Be, Sequel, WOLD, I Want to Learn a Love Song, etc....I saw Harry live when I was very young, maybe 9 or 10....yet, I still remember....Songs that have great music are wonderful, but lyrics reign supreme to me...see Bob Dylan or John Denver or Jim Croce....and Harry told great stories, this one I felt the most...definitely the live version...

So glad you listened to Mr Tanner! It amazes me that John Wallace, Harry's bass player, sang both the part of Mr. Tanner and the high falsetto background vocal in Taxi. I would suggest "Stranger With the Melodies" from Harry as another great story song.

If you want to be shocked to your core, try Harry Chapin’s Sniper. There has never been a song like it, ever.
The poetry of the verses in it. “The first words he spoke took the town by surprise. One caught mrs Gibbons above the right eye. It blew her through the window, wedged her against the door. Reality spilled from her face straining the floor.” It paints such a picture that just stays with you. That is quintessential Harry Chapin.

@@Harley57 yes a great song! I still think my all time favorite is There Only Was One Choice. So many great phrases and concepts in it. “When I started this song I was still 33. The age that Mozart died and sweet Jesus was set free, Keats and Shelley to soon finished Charlie Parker would be, and I fantasized some tragedy would soon befall on me. But just today I had my birthday. I made it 34, mere mortal, not immortal, not star crossed anymore. I have this problem with my aging I no longer can ignore a tame and toothless tabby can’t produce a lion’s roar.”

I never thought I was a good singer, either, but I always enjoyed singing. Avocation, not vocation, but did it with multiple bands from high school until I retired a couple of years ago. The biggest surprise was trying out for the Texas State Choir in 1978 (perhaps '77 for the tryouts) and gaining a seat as a second tenor. Seriously surprised. Thought I was out of it when they got down to naming the top 5. That said, I recall advice from Mrs. Harvey, our choir teacher in high school. "If you are going to be wrong, be wrong at the top of your voice." Worked for me over 40-ish years!

Very Nice, Thank you even as I listen. I guess the only thing that matters is what you think and feel. People are by nature cruel and insensitive but an individuals self worth is paramount irregardless of what others push on you. We have to remember that we cannot let our peers make our decisions for us or let them run our lives.

Both of those are songs that keep popping into my mind throughout my life. There are lines from many Harry songs that stick with you. “She left a six word letter saying “it’s time that I moved on.” That has always stuck in my head. The verse from There only was one choice about “when I started this song I was still 33..”
I was about 17 when I first heard Harry Live. I have never stopped listening to him. I am so amazed how you took to his song writing skills exactly how I did way back when. A better place to be and the Mayor of Candor lied are 2 must listen to song also. Keep up the good work my friend.
I've said it before that no one does story songs like Harry Chapin, he somehow captured the spirit of America on so many levels. You should check out Sniper, Vacancy, Corey's Coming, A Better Place to Be and Mercanaries and so many more. Harry could write from loneliness or love, rage or fear, joy or sorrow; listening to his songs is always a pleasure and often enlightening too. Thanks again Daniel

My parents had this album and I have been listening to these songs for over 40 years. I cry every time.
Still gives me goose bumps every time I hear it, and is the reason "O Holy Night" is my favorite Christmas Carol. It doesn't matter how well you sing if it makes you whole, and never let someone else's opinion make you give up something you love. Good advice.
If you want one of the best songs of Harry's, listen to the live version of "Remember when the Music" sung by Bruce Springsteen at Harry's memorial concert. It is a masterpiece, both the song and the performance. You'll cry happy tears.
And if you want to laugh, try the live version of "30,000 Pounds of Bananas." 🤣
Along with Sniper my favourite Harry song. This was a great reaction, one of the best I’ve seen actually. You really got it. Of course the song is about having a dream and going for it. The line about him singing on his own late at night brings a tear to my eyes every time. What a great life story yet again from the great man.

First of all, I love your channel. I think you’re a very mature young man with a good grasp on what you take away from all the older music. I’m 63 years old and I love hearing the music of my youth being enjoyed by one of your generation.If you like Harry Chapin’s storytelling. You might like to check out a cousin of his - Mary Chapin Carpenter. She’s an amazing storyteller, too. So many great stories in her songs. I would recommend Halley Came To Jackson, He Thinks He’ll Keep Her, This Shirt, The Moon and St. Christopher, Mrs. Hemingway, You Win Again, Stones In The Road... I could go on and on, but I don’t want to fan girl too much! Interesting bloodline behind the Chapins.

You owe it to yourself to listen to "A better place to be" which is arguably his best story. It's a master class in song writing as it takes the listener on an epic emotional journey involving a little man, a bar maid and the man's dream woman. You won't be disappointed.

This is one of my favorite. Makes me think of my Dad. Grreatest Stories Live was on repeat a lot as a child & he’s an absolutely amazing artist.
This is also the only version of “Mr. Tanner” that I like. There are some of his songs that just need to be heard live. The studio version is just not as raw as his live performances.

I am so glad you did Mr Tanner Daniel. This is a song I can play when all alone and it will still make me shed a tear. And that is because of how well the song is crafted and how you can get swept up in the arrangement. In regards to criticism while I was at uni I would attend a couple of crit sessions a week. They weren't there to destroy you although sometimes they did. I would go home and the comments would echo and replay. Occasionally I would be all 'WTF!' what did that mean? And then there were times when I would come away feeling like there were so many directions my work could take and they were all exciting and valid. Good crit is a skill. My choices for another Chapin song would be 'The Mayor of Candor' or 'Corey's Coming.'

0OMG! Sequel closed a loop! I had the honor of being the stage manager for Harry's concert at Cal Poly Pomona, 1977/78 (not quite sure). I saw his show in L.A Dorotyy Chandler Pavilion - filled to capacity, BTW. After the show I bought a "Harry, it sucks" t-shirt (30,000 pounds od bananas reference). He signed for me and I asked if he remembered our work at Cal Poly he said yes. Was he just being nice to me? Who knows, who cares.

His death hit me very hard. He was a big humanitarian, donating time & money to charities. A really good soul.
I have to thank my older sister for my love of Harry Chapin's music. She had an album of his, Balderdash, and she would play that album repeatedly.

That is right album to listen to. In my opinion it has the best versions of his songs. Perform in front of a live audience it came out incredible. Listen to all the songs on that album it’s worth it.

Bob Dylan had a successful career and he'd never win a talent contest on just his singing voice.
"Critics suck." Pretty much. I came to the conclusion long ago that being a full-time critic sucks something out of a person. Roger Ebert, a lifelong film critic and someone who avowedly went into the theater every time _wanting_ to love every movie he was going to see, at times seemed to go insane (he gave _Star Wars: The Phantom Menace_ a glowing review largely because it showed him a "spherical senate chamber", and he'd never seen that before; he wrote about giving a class on _Citizen Kane_ and thanking one of the students for showing him something trivial in the film he'd never noticed before, a prop wobbling because a crewmember had to set it there as the camera was moving, I think), and got very nasty even at fans of his, for capricious reasons. But only sometimes.
As a writer, all I'll say is that every author friend I have knows not to read reviews. There are *so* many instances of people finding things in books that just weren't there, that it's not worth reading them if you are at ALL emotionally sensitive (and most writers are, of course).
"Sang conscientiously" probably meant his singing was neither sloppy nor out of his control. It's a left-handed compliment, for sure.
I'm going to make two "Obscure" Reaction Requests, neither of them all that obsure. Since this was a story song, several came to mind, but I'll stick to two.
"Mr. Charlie" by Lightnin' Hopkins. Hopkins is my favorite blues man, though he's not so famous as B.B. King or John Lee Hooker. Most of the story comes before the song, but still, it's great.

Shooting Star is perhaps my favorite Harry Chapin song. It is on the Varities and Balderdash album. I think you will like that song as well.

I post this :knowing: many will disagree with me, but the 1960s had several vocalists I feel were not the best singers. But, when they performed a song, they :sold: it. Examples of such :for me: include:
Bob Dylan (incredible song writing)
Janis Joplin (pure emotion)
and
Jimmi Hendrix.
As you say, every one has their opinion; it should not dissuade others from pursuing their goals and dreams.
They weren't technically great singers, but as you say, they sold it. They each had individual voices with their own character and style.
This really isn't a sad ending as Mr. Tanner still felt the joy that was within him.

You really should try Chapin's "Sniper." Not one of his biggest hits, but certainly the one that is most worth dissecting. Quite juicy.

Harry wrote the story, and Harry sang the song.....but unless you saw and heard Big John, you would never understand who the greatest singer in Harry's group really was. And Big John is still singing, with Steve Chapin's band.

How you can listen to this song, my Cherished Youngling. How you can watch this without crying amazes me. I am old enough to have seen Harry Chapin on the Verities and Balderdash tour.
